Co. I, 6th Regiment Georgia State Troops

Gustavus Adolphus Miller enlisted as a Private in the
Woodson Guards of Upson Co., Ga., Co. I, 6th Regiment
Georgia State Troops, October 27, 1861. The Captain of Co.
I, was Dr. Thomas O. Heard.

Captain Thomas O. Heard was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel
and 1st Lieutenant Allen B. Mallary was promoted to
Captain.

Co. I, 6th Regiment Georgia State Troops were enlisted for
a period of 6 months. They were sent to Savannah, Ga.

The Regiment which this Company belongs was known at the
time of its organization as the 4th. Regiment but now is
known as the 6th. Regiment.

This Company has received no clothing, or blankets, or
bedding, from the government nor pay for them or any part
thereof.

The uniforms of the Company is of brown domestic jeans that
cost from $1.25 to $2.00 per yard.

I have received from the Quartermaster 3 picket tents, 3
axes, 2 hatchets, 3 spoons, 1 coffee mill, 8 camp kettles,
3 spades, 1 gr letter paper, 1 gr fod cap paper, 1 pack of
envelopes, 1 bottle of ink, 2 axhelves. The remainder of my
equipment we have furnished.

Capt. A. B. Mallary, Commander Co., I, 6th Regiment

This Company is well uniformed in brown colored domestic
jeans costing from $1.25 to $2.00 per yard. They have in
addition each: 3 blankets, 1 great coat, 1 fatigue coat, 1
vest, 3 pair pants, 4 shirts, 3 pair draws, 4 pair socks, 2
caps, 1 matrass.

The Georgia State Troops were volunteer soldiers in state (rather than Confederate) service from October, 1861 to April, 1862 as defenders of the Georgia coast. Many companies enlisted as a unit in the Confederate army after their six-month term in the Georgia State Troops ended. These records can be viewed at the following Web Page:
