PALMER FAMILY STORY
Part I
Daniel Palmer

This story begins with my Great Grandfather, Daniel Palmer, born 3/14/1818, in Twiggs
Cnty., GA and died 1/28/1907, in Camilla, Mitchell Cnty., GA.. These dates come from
Rosa Polhill DuPriest, Compiler, Livingston St., Sylvester, GA. - 1977. Daniel Palmer's
Father, (Let's call him "Robert" Palmer for the sake of argument), left on horseback with
a brother in law,Bullard to "seek their fortune in FL". They traveled until receiving word
of a Seminole Indian uprising in FL. Uncle "Daniel" Bullard returned but Daniel Palmer's
Father "Robert" went on and was never heard from again.
The Seminole Tribe moved into FL from GA in the 1700s. The Army fought three Wars
against the Seminoles during the next 35 years. The Second started after Seminoles under
Osceola ambushed Maj. Francis Dade's troops as they marched from Ft. Brooke in
Tampa to Ft. King, now Ocala, in 1835. The Seminoles were defeated in 1858.
Daniel Palmer often said his Father deserted him and he would never record his name.
His sisters said, "No such thing! He was massacred by the Indians." Daniel prevailed and
the search for his Father's name continues.
It appears that Wiley Bullard, b. before 1775 in N.C. was in GA in 1800. In 1812 in Ga.
Battery, 3rd Regiment of Wimberley's Militia. He died in 1827 in Twiggs Cnty, GA. He
married, probably around 1810, to Parthe(i)naBullard, b.1779/80(1788) in Wilkinson
Cnty, GA, d.. between 6/1/1860 & 6/1/1870 in Twiggs Cnty, GA. They had a son, Daniel
Bullard (I), b. 1805 in Wilkinson Cnty, GA., and died about 9/1894 in Twiggs Cnty., GA.
In 1809, Twiggs was created out of Wilkinson, with Marion as the County Seat until
1868, when it was moved to Jeffersonville.
Wiley and Parthena had a daughter, Martha P. (Parthena), born 1812. Married John F.
Rhodes, B. abt 1800, d. 8/4/1832 in Twiggs Cnty., GA. Her 2nd husband was named
Hunt.
On a trip to Beech Spring M E Church, between Jeffersonville and Bullards Settlement, I
find in the cemetery that they had at least one other son. Kennedy was born 8/1/1819 and
died 7/28/1852. His wife's name was Susan. They had a child Columbus Augustus, born
5/20/1850 and died 12/10/1850. There was a marker inscribed" Daniel Bullard and
Wife", but I was unable to locate the grave. Daniel's 1st wife's name is not given but she
was born around 1800-05. We don't know when she died. Daniel's 2nd wife, Caroline,
was born between 1800-1810 in Twiggs Cnty., GA, and died between 1855-1860. I have
a note that indicates she had a Son, William who was born 1856-57. This could indicate
that Caroline may have died in childbirth. Daniel's 3rd wife, Elizabeth, was born 1829-30
in GA and died after 6/1/1870. I see no record of children.
Daniel's 4th wife was Elizabeth Barton. We don't have her birthdate but she died after
1910. Her children were Dora, Twins: Cora and Victoria and Daniel, II who was born
12/25/1873.
Daniel's children , compiled from the Census, were:
Wiley, born 1828-29 (Hayes?)
Ira, born 1842-44 (Caroline?)
Charles, born 1831-32 (Caroline?)
James Madison, born 1847-52 (Caroline?)
Mary, born 1834-35 (Caroline?)
Monroe, born 1850-52 (Caroline?)
Elizabeth, born 4/18/1831(7?) (Caroline?)
William, born 1856-57 (Caroline?)
Henry H., born 1839-40 (Caroline?)

The Bullard Settlement in Twiggs Cnty., GA was named for the Daniel Bullard Family
who acquired land along the eastern bank of the Ocmulgee River. Mr. Bullard operated a
large mercantile business at the "station" and a small boat up and down the Ocmulgee
River buying and selling wares. He was a shrewd trader and knew the value of a dollar.
He, too, was agent for the steamboat line at the ferry where boats were used to carry
passengers from Twiggs to Houston and vice versa. Mr. Bullard, a successful planter and
businessman, was- - also a financier. He accumulated much wealth through investments
and personal loans.
When the Macon and Brunswick Railway, now Southern, made its appearance in this part
of the County, the River Boat freight traffic soon ceased. Eventually, the Bullard Depot,
located near the River, was removed to the railway line where it became the Bullard
Railway Depot with Mr. Bullard the Agent.
Mrs. Sallie Balckom Kitchens, an elderly Twiggs Countian, related information about the
signs of an Indian trail she remembered from childhood days which led to an out-post for
trading from Fort Hawkins, located near the present site of Antioch Baptist Church.. The
trail ran through Lot No. 41, the property once owned by Daniel Travis Epps.
According to legend, Savage Creek bears that name because white families living near,
were massacred by savage Indians. Today, small mounds of earth can be seen in the
vicinity. Indian paths, packed hard by the runners, became the trails which the white men
followed and eventually widened to accommodate their ox carts and crude wagons on
which they moved their supplies and other cargo as they moved inland.
At a bluff on the Ocmulgee River, known as Durham's Bluff, cargo was loaded and
unloaded to freight boats that plied the river between Darien and Macon. A road led from
Marion to this bluff. Reference is made to this old road in an old deed made by Allen
Bullard, dated November 14, 1844. An old stage road that led from Savannah, northward
through Marion, has visible signs of the old bed near historic Richland Church. Over this
road, known as the Northern State Road, the beautiful marble monument that marks the
grave of Amanda Beckom Richardson in the Church Cemetery was hauled by ox-cart
from Savannah. The old military road constructed from Milledgeville to Hartford, passed
through Twiggs Cnty., running through the present town of Jeffersonville. Hartford was
then a Georgia frontier town situated at the head of navigation of the Ocmulgee River and
an important point for political and military operations.
The crisis which was threatening the destiny of Georgia citizens was responsible for
building the Hartford Road. British agents, stationed just beyond the Ocmulgee River,
were constantly stirring up trouble among the Creek Indians. Georgians realized the
dangerous position of the State in that the British could attack from several strategic
points. Thus it was necessary for Georgia officials to make hurried preparations to be
able to rush troops, artillery. and ammunition to Hartford as well as to other points. An
Act of the Georgia Legislature in 1810 ordered the construction of the road. The Hartford
Road had to act as a military road again when trouble broke out with the Indians in 1818
and again in 1836.
In May, 1870,(My Great Grandfather Daniel Palmer had already been to Stewart Cnty,
GA and was in Mitchell Cnty, GA by this time), the United States Government
established for the Bullard Settlement a post office that operated continuously for more
than 50 years.
The present site of the Bullard community is to the east of the original settlement. The
shift of the site was due to the location of Georgia Highway 87. The school and several
stores have now been built along this highway. Re-reading some notes, there might be
question that I am looking in the right spot in "Twiggs Cnty." as my notes on research
quote Cousin Roscoe Spence as saying, "he lived with the 'family' in Twiggs Cnty, GA.
(The western part of Twiggs, which became a part of Bibb in 1833)..The notes do
continue, however, "The area was known as "Bullard's Station". On a brief visit to the
area several years back, I was unable to locate any connections. Some connections were
found on a visit 8/27/1998.
As in generations of the past, landowners continue to possess large tracts of property,
several family estates exceeding 1,000 acres. The lands of the area have good stands of
both soft and hardwood trees. In many instances the trees' roots penetrate beneath the
surface of the earth into known mineral deposit pockets of clay and rock. Today families
of this section engage in tree farming, and general farming enterprises, although some of
the citizens work in local kaolin mines and plants.
Daniel Bullard was Postmaster at Bullards Station on May 10, 1870 until Dec. 14, 1881
and from Jan. 16, 1882 until Feb.1, 1882. (This info. Is from the book History of Twiggs
County , Page 363) This same story was told with a little different flavor in "Collections
Of Twiggs Countians- Here and There", compiled by Kathleen Jones Carswel. Under
INDUSTRIAL, it included;"The Ocmulgee River was used for transportation of cotton
and supplies coming into Twiggs County, first by ferry at Durham's Mill, then to Marion,
GA, the County Seat. It is not known whether Daniel Bullard or Richard Smith was the
first agent for the ferry that crossed from Twiggs to Houston County. However, when the
trains started their runs, Daniel Bullard was the first agent. The railroad then was known
as Macon and Brunswick; next it was East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia until
purchased by the Southern Railroad. (Submitted by Mrs. J.T. McCormick)

In my research, I have a note, "Pgs. 308/309, Twiggs Cnty., GA Tax Digest, 1818 - 1830
- Next, Pos. J.B. 263 - Twiggs Cnty., GA Tax Digest for 1818,, 1826, 1830, 1833, 1853.
(Is it possible "J.B." stands for "John Bullard"?)
1800 Census-
Wilkinson Cnty- Wiley Bullard - 25+/- - Parthena - 23+/- - Daniel Bullard - 2+/-
1820 Census (Practically illegible. Hard to read anything.)
Wiley Bullard - 45 +/- - Parthena - 43 +/- - Daniel Bullard - 12 +/-
In the 1830 Census, they only listed Family Heads and listed everyone else as Male,
Female, Slave Male or Slave Female. In 84 Division, Daniel Bullard lists 1 male under 5
years of age; (probably his son Wiley Bullard, 1 yr. old, b. 1828/9) & 1 male 20 and
under 30 (Himself),25 yrs. old.. 1 female 20 and under 30. This would be the 1st of his 4
wives. But we don't get her name. She is possibly a Hayes. In 1860, Daniel Bullard's son,
Henry H. lives in the home of, and clerks for Henry E .Hayes, in Marion, Twiggs Cnty.,
GA..I had presumed Henry H. stood for Henry Hill, a good Southern name. Now, I
wonder if it was Henry Hayes and if Daniel's 1st wife was a Hayes. Henry H. would be
clerking for a maternal Uncle. This 1st wife was born 1800/05.. I find no sign of slaves,
though the Census Report gives a total of 6 people.
In the 1830 Census, Daniel Bullard's Mother Parthe(i)na Bullard had a home of her own.
She lists 2 males 10 and under 15. (Kennedy. Bullard is possibly one of them. Daniel
Palmer , my Great Grandfather could have been the other. He was born
3/14/1818/1823(?), died 1/28/1907)(There is some controversy about Daniel Palmer's
age. Most sources give his birthdate as March 14, 1818. However, on his tombstone in
the Camilla Cemetery, his birthdate is listed as "March 14, 1823.") 3 males 15 and under
20. (Is this Allen B., John T., Albert?) 1 male 20 and under 30. (Could this be David?)
Parthena lists 1 female 10 and under 15.(Is this Allythia (Bullard) Durden, who shows up
in the 1860 Census in the same household with Parthena Bullard ?) (Or is this one of
Daniel Palmer's Sisters?) This is more likely Martha P. (Parthena), b. abt 1812, and
mentioned earlier as marrying John F. Rhodes, b. abt.1800 1nd d. 8/4/1832 in Twiggs
Cnty., GA. Discovered this info. On a trip to Jeffersonville, Twiggs Cnty. GA Sept. 1998
at the Probate Court.
Finally, there is a female slave under 10 years of age. Parthena Bullard's age should have
been 50+/-.(1 female 50 and under 60)(Correction: 1 Female 10-15;1 female 15-20;1
female 20-30; 1 female 40-50)
The 1840 Census enumerated Males, under 5; 5 & under 10; 10 & under 15;
15/20;20/30;30/40; 40/50; 50/60; 60/70; 70/80; 80/90; 90/100; 100 & Upwards. Females
had the same. Free Colored Persons: under 10; 10/24;24/36; 36/55; 55/100; 100 up. Male
and Female Slaves-s ame categories.
In the Census, Twiggs Cnty, GA, Daniel Bullard shows 1 male 5 and under 10, 1 male 10
and under 15; 1 male 30 and under 40; 1 female 5 and under 10; 1 female 10 and under
15; 1 female 40 and under 50. Meanwhile, in this same 1840 Census, Parthena Bullard
lists 2 males 20 and under 30; (Possibly Daniel & Kennedy) 1 female 10 and under 20; 1
female 50 and under 60; (Parthena?) and 1 female 70 and under 80. (Who?)
In the 1850 Census of Twiggs Cnty, GA, there is a Kennedy Bullard, a 30 year old male
farmer, worth $4,000. This was Dwelling & Family #647-649. He must have been dead
by 1860 for his wife Susan Bullard, a 25 year old Female in 1850, suddenly shows up in
1860 as the wife of Romaldo R.Whitehead. This head of Dwelling & Family # 48,
Marion, Twiggs Cnty., GA is a 22 year old male listed as Overseer, worth $1,600. His
wife is listed as Susan Bullard Whitehead, a 34 year old Female.
Back in the 1850 Census, Kennedy. Bullard, 30, and Susan Bullard, 25, had Cebil (, a 5
year old female who becomes a 15 year old female called Cabell T. J. Bullard in
Whitehead's 1860 Census); Susan B., a 3 year old Female becomes Susan V.., a 13 year
old Female.; George ., a two year old male, becomes George F .Bullard, a 10 year old
male; Columbus Augustus , a 1 month old male, who died at 6+ months of age. In 1860
under the Romaldo Whitehead family, we find a Kenedy C. Bullard. This could be
Kenedy Columbus Bullard.
Finally, after loading up the Whitehead household with Bullards, Susan gives Romaldo
his own Charles T. Whitehead, a 1 year old male on 6/15/1860. In the 1860 Census,
Cabell, Susan, George and Kenedy were listed as "In School".
Of interest, in the 6/15/1860 Census, in the 372nd Gen. Militia Dist., Twiggs Cnty.,
Marion, GA, there is an Allythia Durden, a 43 year old Female, listed as a Farmer worth
$500 in Real Estate and with $350 in Personal Property. At the same dwelling was
Parthenia Bullard, an 83 year old Female, worth $600 and listed as having been born in
N.C.(?). In 1850, Allythia would have been 33+/-, In 1840, she would have been 23+/-.
In 1830, she would have been 13+/-. In 1820, she would have been 3+/-.
Daniel Palmer would have been 2+/-.Could Allythia have been a sister or a cousin? In the
1850 Census, dated 11/6/1850, 84th Div., Daniel Bullard was listed as a 45 year old male
farmer, with $4,000 value. His was Dwelling & Family #409.( Don't know who Daniel
Bullard had for Brothers and Sisters but he had to have at least one sister who would have
been the Mother of Daniel Palmer and cared enough for him to name her son for her
brother Daniel Bullard. Don't know if Daniel Palmer had any Brothers (Maybe Robert
Palmer. Speculation. Born Wilkinson Cnty., GA. 1920 Census and David.) Dr. Byron
Palmer, Palmyra, NY, in his "Palmer Ancestry And Geneology" says, "Probably Daniel
had a Brother, David, who married Margaret Collins and resided in Washinton Cnty.,
GA".but I am told he had Sisters.
In the 1850 Census, it seems Daniel Bullard is married to his 2nd wife Caroline, 35, born
1800/10 and died between 1855/60 in Twiggs Cnty.
His children were:
Wiley, born 1828/29, listed as a 21 year old male Farmer. He enlisted in the Twiggs Cnty
Guards, 5/7/1862 and died that year in the Civil War of wounds Charles, born 1831/32,
listed as 18 year old male Farmer. He enlisted 5/7/1862 and was discharged from the
Civil War with disabilities, 6/10/1862.
Mary was listed as 11 years old Female, born 1834/35.
Then there's Elizabeth, born 4/18/1837, listed as a 12 year old Female.
Next is Henry H,, born 1839/40 and listed as a 10 year old male.
Was his Mother Daniel Bullard's first wife or Caroline, his second wife?
Ira, 7. Born 1842
Madison, 2(?) Born 1848.
Parthena Bullard, 70 (73)?
The 1860 Census, dated 6/1/1860, shows Henry H. Bullard, now a 19 year old male, as a
Clerk, living in the home of Henry E. Hayes, 425th Gen. Militia Dist., Marion, Twiggs
Cnty., GA. Henry H. is clerking for a maternal Uncle. He didn't clerk long as he enlisted
5/27/1862, appointed 4th Sergeant, was wounded at Cold Harbor, VA., 6/27/1862, was
wounded again and captured and died of his wounds at Sharpsburg, MD on 9/17/1862.
Next was, Ira, born 1842/44. Enlisted 5/27/1862, wounded at Cold Harbor, VA on
6/27/1862 (I found a reference to the Battle of Cold Harbor as 6/16/1864) and killed at
Bentonville, N.C., 3/18/1865. He was a 7 year old male in the 1850 Census.
Daniel Bullard also had 2 more sons by Caroline. They were:
Monroe, born 1850/53 and
William, born 1856/57.
Daniel Bullard's 3rd wife, Elizabeth, born 1829/30 GA. Died after 6/1/1870 Did they
have any children?
He had 4 children by his 4th wife, Elizabeth Barton, born _________ and died after 1910:
Dora
Cora & Victoria Twins and
Daniel, II, born 12/25/1873
In the 1850 Census, Daniel Bullard's Mother, Parthena, also spelled Parthina, is listed at
Daniel Bullard's home and is a 73 year old Female.
In 1860 Census, Daniel Bullard is listed as a 54 year old Farmer in the 372nd Gen.
Militia Dist. of Twiggs Cnty., at Marion, GA on 6/15/1860. He had $7.000 in Real Estate
and had $33,000 in Personal Property. (Caroline is dead) His 3rd wife, Elizabeth, born
1829/30 GA.,died after 6/1/1870, comes along after the 1860 Census.. (Wiley has his
own home.) (Where is Charles?) With Daniel Bullard was, Mary, Born 1834/35, a 22
year old Female. Next,(Where is Elizabeth? Married? 22/23 yrs old.
(Henry H. Is living in the home of Henry E Hayes).
Ira, born 1842/44, a 16 year old male who would die of Civil War wounds at Bentonville,
N.C., 3/18/1865.
Madison, born 1847/52, is a 10 year old male (In school);
Monroe, born 1850/53, is an 8 year old male (In school) and
William, born 1856/57, is a 4 year old male, Caroline's son. (In school).
Daniel Bullard is yet to have 4 children by his 4th wife, Elizabeth Barton
Daniel Bullard's son, Wiley, in 1860 Census, now the head of a dwelling and Family #37
in Gen. Militia Dist # 372 nd., Twiggs Cnty., Marion, GA. He is to die of Civil War
wounds in 1862. Wiley, born 1828/29, is a 32 year old male, an Overseer, with $200 in
Real Estate. His wife Susan H. is a 22 year old Female. They have 3 children:
Angelina C.., a 7 year old Female (In school)
Georgia V, a 4 year old Female; and
Charles, a 6 month old male.

Daniel Palmer was approximately 2 years old in the 1820 Census and in Twiggs Cnty.,
GA; 12 in 1830 and in Twiggs Cnty., GA; 22 in 1840 and in Stewart Cnty, GA; 32 in
1850 and in Stewart Cnty., GA, 42 in 1860 and in Mitchell Cnty., GA; 52 in 1870 and
still in Mitchell Cnty., GA. He is listed as 60 in the 1880 Census and I find more notes
that say he was 45 in 1870; 36 in 1860; 25 in 1850. (We wonder how the matter of age
can fluctuate so drastically. Simple. In the 1870 Census, it says of Daniel Palmer, "Can't
read or write.")
In 1840 Census for GA, Daniel Palmer was listed as Stewart County, Lumpkin, GA. (Pg
119 on microfilm)(What age?) I am told that Daniel Palmer totally dedicated himself to
providing for his Family. It is said that he wore a hair-shirt and worked from before dawn
until after dark. It paid off! One other tale is that Daniel took his children to the circus.
He was called up before the Church and was told that his "letter" had been taken back
because he had sinned in taking his children to the Circus. He was told that he would be
forgiven, if he confessed his sin and asked for forgiveness. He replied, "Daniel Palmer
ain't committed no sin. Daniel Palmer ain't confessin' no sin". Sure enough, they took
back his letter but I am told that this letter was restored before he died.
In 1840 Census of Stewart County, GA, I found John(?)Palmer who claimed 2 males
under 5, 1 male 30 and under 40, 2 females 5 and under 10 and 1 female 30 and under 40.
In 1850 Census of Stewart Cnty., GA -#667-689, we have John "T". Palmer, 35, listed as
a merchant from Ireland; his wife Elizabeth, 32, from GA; a son Will who was 7; a child
"Albion" was 5 and Octavia was 2. In the 1860 Census of Stewart Cnty., GA (After
Daniel Palmer and family had left for Mitchell Cnty., GA), we find John "F" Palmer, 43,
a "psycician" from Ireland; along with Elizabeth, now listed as 37; William now 17;
Waddy 15, Octavia 13, and there is John, 8 and Mollie, also listed as 8.
There was also a Tch(?) PalmeR(sic) who had 1 male 5 and under 10; 1 male 10 and
under 15; 1 male 15 and under 20; 1 male 20 and under 30; and 1 male 30 and under 40.
There was 1 female 15 and under 20.
In the History of Stewart County, GA - Tampa Municipal Library - Pg. 294, "1850 U.S.
Slave Census of Stewart Cnty., GA", David ( or Daniel) Palmer is listed as having 1
slave.
In 1850 Census, two listings are of great significance.

Who is Lavinia?
Where is James Hilliard.? My Grandfather would only be about 10 years old.
This is the place to tell something of Daniel Palmer's 2nd wife, Rhoda Frances Adams
(Swearingen) Her Father, Fields Adams moved from Newberry Cnty., SC to Mitchell
Cnty., GA. His 34 year old wife of 16 years had just died. He brought the rest of his
family and 7 slaves. In 1836, he inherited one female slave from his Father, William
Adams. It was a common practice to send young slaves like the five boys and one girl,
apparently children of the 33 year old to neighboring plantations to be bred, creating
young workers they couldn't afford. If this 33 year old woman was the one Fields Adams
inherited from his Father William, Adams, she would have been about 9 years old when
he received her.
In 1860, at the Census, he only had a 33 year old slave woman with him .and her small
children; 2 sons and a daughter. He had six children in the household and Rhoda Frances
was the oldest. She was 20 and, in the absence of a Mother, felt she should"mother" the
others. She had been 14 years old when her Mother died. The oldest son of the family did
not migrate from Newberry Cnty., SC. He joined the Confederate Army and was killed in
battle. Rhoda's siblings were Archie, 18 (In 1860 Census), along with Susan, 16;
Behethland, 14; George Washington Lafayette, 11; and Silas Sinkfield, 6.
During the War, Rhoda Frances Adams married a Mr. Swearingen and lived near
Hopeful until her Husband's death. He was possibly a casualty of the War. Returning to
her Father's home, she was soon married to one of their affluent neighbors, a widower,
Daniel Palmer. Rhoda's step-Granddaughter, Helen Palmer Bennett, says she remembers
the old lady quite well. Helen was one of the ten children of James H. Palmer, Daniel's
youngest son.. She recalls that Rhody would say to James H. Palmer's widow (Laura
Twitty Palmer),"Laura, come to dinner tomorrow and bring only 'one' of the children
with you". Mrs. Bennett says the children had to take turns visiting their Grandmother.
These notes on Rhoda come from a series called Rambling Through The Wiregrass, a
series of articles by Scott Morris, Jr. as published in THE CAMILLA ENTERPRISE, in
the 1980-90s. Morris continues, "Daniel Palmer was a prominent and prosperous farmer
of the McElveenville Dist. before the War. In the US Census of 1860 Daniel Palmer was
described as being a farmer, 36 years old, born in GA of parents also born in GA, having
Real Estate valued at $5000 and a personal estate of $11,000. His wife Caroline was
living then and was 36 years old. They had 7 children, four boys and three girls.
The Slave Schedule for 1860 showed Daniel Palmer had 10 slaves, four males and six
females. They were all of working age except for one male infant, 10 months old. The
others ranged from 32 down to 12.

PALMER FAMILY STORY
Part IV
Laura Twitty Palmer

My Grandmother, Laura Mattie Twitty Palmer was introduced in "Twitty Family in
America", as follows,"
Laura Twitty Palmer was born in Mitchell Cnty., GA. She finished in Education, Music
and Art at Cox College about 1878. She taught school before her marriage to James H.
Palmer. In 1880, He received a Law Degree from the University of Georgia. Both were
buried in Camilla, GA.
My Aunt Helen Bennett responded, " I believe Mama graduated from LaGrange (GA)
Female College. Mr. ?? Cox was President and later became President of Cox College in
College Park, GA. My Sister, Nannie Flake Adams attended Cox College. Papa soon
gave up practice of Law.
(Helen P. Bennett)
Of interest, my Mother, Frances Folsom Cleveland Palmer, attended Cox College. I have
her Diploma. Cox College moved to the north side of Atlanta and is now Oglethorpe
University.
In December of 1977, my Aunt, Helen Palmer Bennett, put together the Family History
of her Mother, Laura Mattie Twitty Palmer's family History, which I shall attempt to
copy here, as far as possible. My Great Grandfather, Daniel Palmer's son, James Hilliard
Palmer married Laura Twitty.
"The Twitty Family in America. 1671 -1976"
The name has also been spelled Tweedie,. Twiddy and Twedy. The description of their
arms shows similarities which indicate a possible relationship. It is uncertain where these
came from - some say Wales, another Germany. Or was it Northern Ireland or England?.
Many families bearing the Twitty name are, as yet, unable to identify the original
immigrant.
The first recorded information that seems to be authentic, was found in Vestry Book and
Register of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent and James City Cntys., VA.
Dates in Vestry Book and Register run from 1684 to 1786. St. Peter's Church is one of
the oldest and most historical Churches in America. The Church was temporarily
abandoned after the Revolution and Disestablishment as the Church of England. A Twitty
name has appeared on records there as "Young" Twitty.
The next earliest record of mention of the Twitty name was in "English Duplicates of
Lost Virginia Records", listing Thomas Twitty on the quit rent roll in New Kent Cnty.. In
1702 for 200A.
Also, in "Virginia Magazine", Vol.31, Pg.228, it reports Thomas Twitty on the quit rent
roll for 200 acres in James City Cnty., which later became a part of New Kent Cnty.
Based on these facts, it is assumed that Thomas Twitty was probably the first Twitty to
settle in America and that he was the progenitor of our Twitty line'
(Copied in part from "The Twitty Family in America", by Helen Palmer Bennett.)
Dr. John Barber Twitty, born 12/12/1821 and died 8/21/1890, married Nancy Huckston
Flake on 7/6/1854. Nancy was born 4/10/1835 and died 5/7/1923. Dr. John was the son of
Hiram Twitty and Middie Mobley.
Dr. John Barber Twitty was born in Lancaster Cnty., SC. He was a Graduate of Clemson
College and the Medical College of SC (Charleston). He was married in Anson Cnty.,
NC by Dr. G.P. Walsh to Nancy Huckston Flake, who was a Graduate of Salem College
in NC. She was the daughter of John Wesley Flake and Roxanna Bennett. Dr. Twitty
moved to GA about 1858,. He practiced in Camilla where the family lived and where he
and his wife are buried.
Helen Palmer Bennett continues, "I believe he lived and practiced in the Evergreen
Baptist Church area. The family were active members of that Church - organized in 1857.
The Twitty home is on the Bainbridge Road where Oneal Boutwell now lives.(Remember
Helen was writing in 1977.) His son, Thomas Baker Twitty, Sr., was born there in
1/18/1873 so the House is more than 104 years old - Helen P. Bennett)
These are the children of Dr. John Baker Twitty:
1.	William Judson- Born 10/13/1855 & died 10/26/1857
2.	Hattie Jordan - Born 6/24/1858 & died 6/11/1860
3.	Laura Mattie - Born 12/27/1860 & died 11/27/1953. Laura married James Hilliard
Palmer on 9/27/1881. James Hilliard was born 6/24/1859 and died 8/25/1908.
They were my Grandmother and Grandfather.
4.	Roxanna Lee (Anna Lee) - Born 4/13/1863 & died 5/25/1946. Anna Lee "Aunt
Lee" married James Kendrick Bibb on 11/21/1881. James Kendrick was born
1857 and died 2/2/1938.
5.	Hooper Flake - Born 2/18/1865 and died 9/28/1868.
6.	Jennie Bet - Born /7/18/1868 and died 12/1/1896. Jennie Bet married Benjamin
Franklin Collins on 11/9/1886. Benjamin Franklin was born 10/4/1864 and died
9/26/1933.
7.	Thomas Baker - Born 1/18/1873 and died 4/22/1960. "Uncle Baker" married,
first, Tennie Elizabeth Wood. "Aunt Tennie" was born 6/2/1878 and died
5/17/1943. They married 6/24/1896 "Uncle Baker married, second, Eula
Culpepper. "Aunt Eula" was born 5/12/1879 and died 6/13/1966. They were
married 5/23/1944.
8.	Lucy Gordon - Born 2/14/1876 and died ??/??/????. "Aunt Lucy" married Francis
O'Connor Fletcher on 6/19/1906.
My Aunt Helen Palmer Bennett added the following note of interest:
"Dr. John Baker Twitty was one of three Brothers who were M.D.s. Since that time, our
family has had few Doctors. One is Aunt Lee Twitty Bibb's Great Grandson, Frederick G.
Jones and a Great Grandson of Laura Twitty Palmer, John Cochran McKeown. Her
Grandson, Carroll Adams, is a DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine)
Next is the Father and Mother of Dr. John Barber Twitty. They were Hiram Twitty, I and
Middie Mobley. Hiram was the son of Peter Wynne Twitty and and Susanna Burford.
Hiram was born 1780 and died 7/20/1855. He married Middie Mobley - Born 4/8/1784
and died 12/??/1873. Hiram was born in Lancaster, SC. Middie was probably born in
Lancaster Cnty., the Daughter of Lewis Mobley. After Lewis Mobley died, his Wife
(Name unknown) married a Terry and, by this marriage, had a Daughter, Mahala Terry.
This Mahala married Eli Twitty, son of John Twitty and Winifred Hammond.
Helen Palmer Bennett presents another item of interest:
"Pearl Steels of Wetmore, TX, Great Granddaughter of Dr. Starling G. Twitty, has a letter
she believes to be authentic. It states that "Middie" stands for "Midian", meaning "Middle
Child" and should be spelled "Middie" and not "Mittie". She has a photograph of Middie
Mobley Twitty's headstone showing the spelling "Middie". It must be concluded she was
a Mother of many notable sons and was a queen among women. Middie Mobley Twitty is
buried in Evergreen Baptist Church Cemetery near Camilla, GA." (H.P.B.)

whose birthday we don't know, but she died 10/1/1817
Peter Wynne was the Son of Capt/ Thomas Twitty,(2) and Mary (Wynne) Wyatt.
Helen Palmer Bennett adds:
"It is believed that Peter Wynne Twitty was born in Prince George or New Kent Cntys.,
VA. He moved with his Parents to Brunswick Cnty., VA about 1742. Susanna Burford
was the Daughter of Philip and Mildred Burford. In 1765, he received from his Father,
1/4 of his land holdings. In 1767, he was given ,"for love and affection",his share of
slaves and farm animals by his Father.

*	1781 - On Bute Cnty., NC Tax List for 4,541 Pounds.
*	1784 - He sold furniture, cattle, etc. to Philemon Hawkins and shares to Philip
Burford, apparently in preparation to move to SC.
*	1790 - Census - Bute Cnty, NC. One male over 16 years old; 3 males under 16
years; 4 females and 3 slaves. Peter moved to Lancaster Cnty., SC sometime after

Father-In-Law, Capt. Philip Burford.

Helen Palmer Bennett presents now:
Capt. Thomas Twitty(2), Born c1705 and died in 1779. In c1734, Thomas married Mary
(Wynne) Wyatt. Son of Thomas Twitty
Capt. Thomas Twitty(2) was probably born in New Kent Cnty., VA. His wife was Mary
Wynne, the daughter of Capt. Peter Wyne (?) and Frances________. Mary Wynne
married, first, in Kent Cnty., VA to Henry Wyatt of Hanover Cnty. (VA). The first action
of record by Thomas(2) was the Sale of land, 7/30/1734, in Hanover Cnty., VA. Which
was part of the land inherited from his Father. About 1742, Thomas Twitty(2) moved to
Brunswick Cnty., VA.
There are many land entries in Brunswick and adjoining Cntys by Thomas Twitty,
indicating that he was very active and ended up with a large acreage. Listed in
chronological order are some of the transactions involving land:
*	1742 - Thomas Twitty(2) bought 100 A in Brunswick, Deed Book 2, p.236.
*	1743 - Thomas Twitty(2) bought 450 A in Brunswick on Meherrin(?) River. Deed
Book 3, p.337.

*	1764 - Thomas Twitty(2) sold 1,310 A in Lunenberg Cnty., (VA?). Deed Book 9,
p.333.
*	1767 - Thomas Twitty(2) sold 400 A. in Brunswick Cnty., VA. Deed Book 1, p.
437.
Helen Palmer Bennett continues "Thomas Twitty(2) was active in public affairs and
obtained important positions in the County . In 1746, he was given license to operate a
ferry on the Roanoke River - Order Book 3, p.115.
He was commissioned a Captain in 1748. Order Book 3, p. 452. In 1753, he was
appointed Commissioner of Peace - Executive Journal V, p.437. In 1761, he was
appointed Sheriff of Brunswick Cnty., VA. Deed Book 6, p. 646.
Thomas Twitty(2), as Sheriff, was responsible for collecting tithes in part of Brunswick
Cnty., VA. He apparently was careless about turning in the funds, as collected. He was on
the list of Collectors who were in arrears, and the State Auditor threatened Court action.
It is reported that Thomas(2) finally paid up and was cleared. However, judging by the
number of suits against him, he must have been in trouble, as he took steps to divest
himself of all real estate and property. In 1765, he, by four Deeds, gave land and property
to his four sons; Peter, George, John and Thomas(3). He and his family moved to Bute
Cnty (Now Warren Cnty)., NC about 1768.
Thomas Twitty(2) died in Bute Cnty, NC, in 1779. John Hawkins, who married Thomas
Twitty's(2) Step-daughter, Mary Wyatt, was appointed Administrator , on 5/10/1779, to
settle his estate. On 8/12/1779, John Twitty, Son of Thomas(2), was appointed
Administrator in place of John Hawkins. A few months later, John Twitty died and John
Hawkins was renamed Administrator to settle the estate. Capt. Thomas Twitty(2) had 6
children.
Children of Thomas Twitty(2) and Mary (Wynne) Wyatt:
1.	Peter Wynne Twitty, Born c1735 and died 3/25/1812. Peter married Susanna
Burford on c 1772. Susanna was born ??/??/?? And died 10/1/1817.
2.	Thomas Twitty(3), Born c1737 and died after 1785, married Mary Clack c 1760.
Mary was born after 1745 and died after 1774.
3.	Elizabeth (Betty) Twitty, Born c1739 and died ??/??/??. On 10/10/1757, Mary
married William Clack, II who was born after 1735 and died c1802.

Burford on 2/24/1773.
6.	George Twitty, Born c1744. We have no record of the date of his death and when,
or if he ever married.
Thomas Twitty, Sr.(1)., Born c1671 and died c1733. His wife's name is unknown.
Helen Palmer Bennett adds:
"Unfortunately, all County records (except some Church Records) in New Kent and
Hanover Cntys., VA, were destroyed by fire prior to 1865. We are unable to check
Thomas Twitty, Sr.'s movements or his family in this area. In William And Mary
Quarterly, Series 1, Vol.21, p. 54, reference is made to Hanover Cnty. "Small Books"
record 1734-1738. Under date of 7/30/1734, Thomas Twitty of Caroline Cnty, sold land
which was part of the tract willed by Thomas Twitty, (Sr.) Of New Kent Cnty, to his
Sons John and Thomas. From this, we judge that Thomas, Sr. died prior to 1734, and that
his Sons were proably old enough to manage their own affairs."

William Bennett is the Ancestor who assisted in establishing American Independence
while acting in the capacity of Captain of the SC Militia. He and his Brother, Nevil, came
to Anson Cnty., NC, from the Eastern shores of Maryland. William's First Wife died
when his son, William, Jr. was but three weeks old.
During the Revolutionary War, he moved to Marlboro, SC, where his second Wife,
Olivia Chears had been reared. From that County, he raised a Company of men to fight in
the Revolution. While living in Anson Cnty., he was persecutied by the Tories and, once
when being sought, he hid up a chimney. They found him and, in pulling him down, they
broke his shoulder bone. His Army Canteen is now in the possession of his Great Great
Grand daughter, Mrs. Mary Bennett Little of Wadesboro, NC.

PALMER FAMILY STORY
Part V
Conclusion

Back to the original purpose--- thwarting Daniel Palmer in his century plus secret about
his Father's name--- it is necessary to grasp at every straw, until you find one that keeps
you afloat. In addition to an intense study on Bullard's Station and Parthena, it is
necessary to try any lead on the other side and see if a lead can be found to bring us
downto Daniel, via HIS ancestors. I had always heard the story that our clan of Palmer's
came from England. I've been told they landed in NC, with some coming to GA.
There is a reference in "Early Records of GA - Wilkes Cnty." - Pg 22, of Solomon
Palmer's 5 Sons and 1 Daughter, 12 years to 9 months, had come from NC, with his Wife,
to occupy a "Land Grant - 450 Acres on the North Fork of the Ogechee below the Big
Beaver Dam."
In the 1800 Census of Pendleton, SC, we are told of Solomon Palmer; 4 Sons (2 born
1784 to 1790)(2 born 1790) and 3 Daughters; all born 1790 - 1800.. Then we hear that in
1792, 5 Palmer Brothers and their 2 Sisters left Rockingham Cnty., NC and migrated to
GA, settling in Colombia Cnty., GA. We are not given Solomon's wife's name but we are
given the Children's names as:
George, Jeff (Joeffre), Nathaniel, William, Jonothan and Martha
Jonothan is the one we have gotten details on:
Jonothan's 1st Wife was a Margaret White. They moved to Columbia Cnty., GA and they
had three sons: Edmund; James (Possibly James Daniel or Daniel James) and David.
Edmund seems to have had 2 sons; one became Judge John T. Palmer amd the other was
Professor James E. Palmer. John seems to have a Son, Dr. John Turner, while James
produced Howard E. W. Palmer of Atlanta. James was born 4/18/1799 and died 2/2/1884.
He married Mary Collins on 7/25/1825 and there is no record of Children.
Finally, David, who was born 10/12/1805 and died 7/16/1858, married 2 wives, 1st Wife
was Martha E. Collins whom he married on 8/24/1826 They produced 6 Children;
1- David,. Jr.(?) Was born 3/17/1847 and died 5/??/1915. His wife was Margaret
Alice.Patterson, whom he married 1/3/1872.; 2 - Annie. No info.; 3 - Robert - No info.; 4
- Savannah - No info. ; 5 - George, who was born 7/2/1834 and died 10/20/1910. On
12/21/1860, he married Moselle Johnson; 6 - James Turner, who was born 7/16/1836 in
Burke Cnty., GA and died 12/25/1901. On 10/9/1860, he married Georgia V. Haynien(?).
David's 2nd Wife was Margaret Collins, his 1st Wife's Sister. They had 2 Sons:
John, born 3/2/1857
Thomas, born 4/ 6/1859 in Washington Cnty., GA. He practiced Law in Brooksville, FL,
with Gen. J. B. Wall. He became Mayor. He was a Graduate of the Univ. Of VA Law
School in 1886. He was a State Attorney for the 6th District in 1889 and State Attorney
for Tampa in 1890. He died in 1927. He was a member of the Florida Assembly.
Meanwhile, Jonothan took a 2nd Wife. We don't know her name or the date of their
Wedding. We do know the names of their Children:
Emeline; Dorothea Ann and Martha A.
I express great appreeciation to Dr. Waldo E. Floyd, Jr., Macon, GA for information he
has given to me on the Bullard family, which we share in our heritage. He has told me
that Wiley Bullard was one of 7 brothers who came out of NC late 1700/early 1800s but
he says they went first to Washington Cnty., GA, from which Wiley went to
Twiggs(Wilkinson).
Appreciation goes also to Barney Hendricks of Cochran, Bleckley Cnty., GA, who shared
his Mother's records and his own personal knowledge of the Bullard Family in
neighboring Jeffersonville, Twiggs Cnty., GA.
