Haskel Pullian

Haskel Pullian, 88, of Carlton, died Tuesday, February 10, 2004.

A native of Franklin County, Mr. Pullian was the son of the late Tom
and Tishey Smith Pullian.

He was retired from the State Highway Department. Mr. Pullian was 
preceded in death by two sons, J.T. Pullian and Junior Pullian.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, February 13, in the
 chapel of Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville, with the Rev. Chuck 
Black officiating. Burial was in the Salem Holiness Church Cemetery.

Mr. Pullian is survived by his wife, Clora Guest Pullian; four 
daughters, Jo Ann Neave, Carlton, Evelene Walters, Bogart, Jerusha 
Hattaway, Danielsville, and Joyce Bowen, Bowman; three sons, Nelson 
Pullian, North Carolina, and Johnny Perry and Jerry Perry, both of 
Bowman; 18 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and six great-great-
grandchildren.

Brown Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Fred Howard Sr.

Fred Howard Sr., of Carlton, died Wednesday, February 11, 2004.

Mr. Howard was born in Oglethorpe County.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 14, at Piney 
Grove Church. Burial was in the Shilo Church Cemetery, Carlton.

Mr. Howard is survived by four daughters, Lula Howard, Agnes 
Appling, Elizabeth Wilson and Virginia Howard; four sons, Roosevelt 
Howard, Fred Howard Jr., Frank Howard and Eddie Howard; and three 
brothers, John, Albert and Charlie Howard.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Howard.

Jimmy L. Smith

Jimmy Lamar Smith, 65, of Gadsden, Ala., died Saturday, 
February 7, 2004, in Mesa Arizona at Banner Desert Hospital.

Born in Danielsville, Mr. Smith was the youngest son of Fred and 
Delia Smith.
Mr. Smith moved to Gadsden with General Time after living in North 
Carolina and Georgia. He had always worked in business, including 
his time in the army. He was a former member of Bellevue Baptist 
Church, the Elks lodge, the Masons and the VFW and was a husband 
in Beta Sigma Pi.

“He was a salesman by trade, a family man by passion and a golfer 
by choice,” said family members. “He has been many things to many 
people, but his primary titles were Papa (poppee), Daddy and Husband. 
He instilled in his children to be and give their best.

“He will live on through all those he touched.”

Mr. Smith was a Madison County High School graduate, class of 1957. 
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth, and two 
brothers, Billy and Jack Smith.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, February 13, in the 
chapel of Collier Butler Funeral Home. Jack Kendricks, John Moore, 
Johnny Spann, Lynn Fortenberry, Mike Shrouds, Danny Naylor, Jim 
Thompson, Harvey Funderburg, David Smith and Kelly Edgeworth served 
as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Chris Morris, Matthew 
Edgeworth, Eddie Dunn, Gene Harris and Johnny Phillips.

Mr. Smith is survived by his new bride, Tillie Kieffer Smith; sister, 
Betty Brown (Homer); sister-in-law, JoAnn Smith; his children, Fred 
Smith (Jennifer), Darlene (Christopher), DeAnn Scott, Ray Kieffer 
(Kelley) and Ron Kieffer; grandchildren, Zachary Scott, Christine, 
Rebekah, Mary Katherine and Ashley Kay Morris and RJ and Reise Kieffer; 
and a number of nieces and nephews, other family members and a huge 
number of friends.

Herman Adams

Herman Adams, 78, of Danielsville, died Sunday, February 15, 2004, 
at his home.

Mr. Adams was born April 9, 1925, in Madison County. He was a son 
of the late Omer Leroy and Willie Mae Evans Adams.

Mr. Adams retired from Chicopee and had been a member of Community 
Baptist Church since its establishment in 1962. He was a United 
States Army veteran, serving during World War II, and was a member 
of the Harrison McCreary V.F.W. Post in Royston. He was also a 
member of the National Rifle Association.

Mr. Adams was preceded in death by a sister, Sally Irvin.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, February 17, in the 
chapel of Pruitt Funeral Home, Royston, with the Revs. Tim Peek and 
Phil Parks officiating. Burial was in the Community Baptist Church 
Cemetery. Mr. Adams’ grandsons served as pallbearers.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah Fortson Adams, Danielsville; sons 
and daughters-in-law, Lee and Marie Adams and Daniel and Tina Adams, 
all of Danielsville; daughter and son-in-law, Ophelia and Leonard 
Hart, Comer; grandchildren, Chris, Paula, Billy, Dusty, Travis, 
Amanda, Bailey, Bradley, Brooke, Brandi and Jonathan; great-grandson, 
Matthew; sisters, Edna Allen, Lavonia, and Aurelia Drake, Rebecca 
unnin and Eleanor Fitzpatrick, all of Danielsville; brothers, Andrew 
Adams and William (Bill) Adams, both of Danielsville, and Branson 
Adams, Royston; and caregivers, Deborah Kendrick, Carolyn Bradford 
and Pepsi Faust.

Leonard C. Whitlow

Leonard Cyrus Whitlow, of Royston, died Tuesday, February 17, 2004, 
after a lengthy illness of Alzheimer’s disease.

Mr. Whitlow was born July 12, 1920, son of the late Moody and Janie 
Chandler Whitlow. He graduated from the University of Georgia with 
a BSEd degree in vocational education, a MSEd in vocational 
agriculture and a six-year degree in administration. Mr. Whitlow 
was a veteran, having served his country during World War II in the 
armed forces in China, Bruma and India. He was principal in Eatonton 
in the late 1940’s and then returned to his native Franklin County, 
where he served in the field of education for 45 years. As a teacher 
and director of vocational education, Mr. Whitlow’s influence was a 
great asset to the young people he encountered in his teaching, it 
was stated. He was an active member of many professional organizations 
and received recognition for his service in the field of education.

As a citizen of his community, he served as a Mason and a Shriner. He 
was an active member of Royston Baptist Church for 50 years, and served 
as a deacon and Sunday School Superintendent and on numerous committees.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 19, at 
Royston Baptist Church. The family will receive friends in the Family 
Life Center following the service.

Mr. Whitlow is survived by his wife of 59 years, Geneva Wansley Whitlow; 
his children, Keith and Athena Whitlow, Hilton Head, S.C., and Deborah 
and David Frost, Atlanta; three grandchildren, Courtney Whitlow, Whit 
Frost and Sloan Frost; brother, Stanton Whitlow; and sister, Jenene 
Whitlow Smith.

Church Family Life Center, 767 Church Street, Royston, Georgia 30662,

Geneva Phillips

Mrs. Geneva Lee Goodman Phillips, 83, of Royston, died at her home 
Sunday, February 15, 2004, after an extended illness.

A native of Gold Hill, N.C., Mrs. Phillips was born September 23, 1920, 
to the late Paul T. and Emma Arey Goodman.

She graduated from Appalachian State University and taught math and 
physical education in Kannapolis, N.C., Canon and Lavonia. Mrs. 
Phillips was a retired school teacher and homemaker.

She married Robert Lee Phillips on June 13, 1947, and they moved to 
the Sandy Cross Community of Franklin County in 1951, where she lived 
the rest of her life. She was a member of Peniel Pentecostal Holiness 
Church.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by 
two daughters, Reva Arlette Phillips and Karen Lynn Phillips, three 
brothers, Emerson Goodman, Paul T. Goodman Jr. and Dwight Goodman, 
and three sisters, Gertrude Hemrick, Mabel Carpenter and Ruth Hammill.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 18, at 
Pennington Chapel United Methodist Church with the Revs. John Ingham 
and Gary Osteen officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mrs. 
Phillips’ grandsons, Jason Phillips, Eric Phillips, Nathan Phillips, 
Jonathan Phillips and Justin Phillips, and grand-nephew, Steven 
Till, served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Joshua 
Phillips and Caleb Phillips.

Mrs. Phillips is survived by her husband, Robert Lee Phillips, 
Royston; sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Kinsey and Joy Phillips, 
Commerce, and Kirby and Kay Phillips and Kevin and Laura Phillips, 
all of Royston; brother, Harry Goodman, Denton, N.C.; sister, Rachel 
Hahn, Stanfield, N.C.; and eight grandchildren.

Maxine P. Lance

Mrs. Maxine Patton Lance, 42, of Commerce, formerly of Habersham 
County, died Sunday, February 15, 2004, at BJC Medical Center, 
Commerce.

Born in Jackson County on March 24, 1961, Mrs. Lance was a daughter 
of Bennie Patton, Clarkesville, and the late Betty Willis Patton.
She was an employee of Ingles in Commerce and Hull and was a member 
of Demorest Church of God. Mrs. Lance was preceded in death by a 
daughter, Kimberly Varnes, a grandson, Dakota Varnes, and a 
grandmother, Matilda Willis.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 19, at 
Demorest Church of God with the Rev. William Cox officiating. 
Burial will be in Level Grove Cemetery.

Survivors, in addition to her father, include two daughters, Natasha 
Varnes, Cottonwood, Ala., and Stephanie Bishop, Commerce; two sons, 
Michael Varnes, Carnesville, and Jason Varnes, Danielsville; one 
sister, Kathy Williams, Cornelia; one brother, Rocky Potts, 
Hollywood; and four grandchildren.

The family was to have received friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday 
at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin.

Buford Carey

Buford Gwinnett Carey, 94, of Danielsville, died Tuesday, 
February 17, 2004, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Carey was born in Madison County on April 8, 1909, son of the 
late S.M. and Era Fitts Carey.

He was a farmer and a member of the Farm Bureau, where he had 
served as president/director. He was also a member of Evangelical 
Methodist Church, where he was a board member, church founder and 
former Sunday School Superintendent and teacher.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Carey was preceded in death by 
his wife, Annie Lou Bennett Carey, and a sister, Allie Dudley.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 19, at 
Evangelical Methodist Church with the Rev. Tim Peek officiating. 
Burial will be in the church cemetery. Tim Carey, Bruce Carey, 
Nelson Carey, Nolan Carey, Nathan Carey, Curtis Carey, Scott Carey 
and Neal Carey will serve as pallbearers. The directors of the 
Farm Bureau will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Survivors include four sons, Norman Carey, Greensboro, Everett 
Carey, Danielsville, Dwight Carey, Hull, and Ronnie Carey, 
Watkinsville; three brothers, Billy Carey, Ford Carey and John L. 
Carey, all of Danielsville; and seven sisters, Hester Sartain, 
Gladell Sexton, Ethel Sexton, Cornelia Ginn, Roberta Dove and 
Stuart Kirk, all of Danielsville, and Annie Mae Smith, Hull.

The family is at their respective homes and was to have received 
friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Pruitt Funeral Home, Royston. 
The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

Peggy A. Looney

Mrs. Peggy Ann Whisnant Looney, 50, of Nicholson, died Saturday, 
February 14, 2004, after an extended illness.

Mrs. Looney was born November 5, 1953, in Morgan County, a 
daughter of Hazel Gilstrap Whisnant, Gainesville, and the late 
Manuel Whisnant.

She was a homemaker. Mrs. Looney was preceded in death by a son, 
Larry Blake Looney.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 19, 
in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Revs. 
John Ingram and Steve Whisnant officiating. Burial will be in 
Jackson Memorial Park, Commerce. Jeronny Jackson, Jerry Hart, 
Dereck Looney, Bo Whisnant and Sketer Whisnant will serve as 
pallbearers.

In addition to her mother, Mrs. Looney is survived by her husband,

Watkinsville, and Nancy Inez Whisnant, Gainesville; step-children,

Jefferson, and Jeannie Haywood, Murrayville; brothers, Kenneth

Emmer Starrett

Mrs. Emmer Frances Hayes Starrett, 93, of the Brown Memorial 
Convalescent Center in Royston, died Saturday, February 14, 2004, 
at Cobb Memorial Hospital, Royston.

Mrs. Starrett was born in Hart County on March 29, 1910, a 
daughter of the late Preist and Minnie Bryson Hayes.

She was a homemaker and a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in 
Hartwell. Mrs. Starrett was preceded in death by her husband, O.B. 
Starrett, a daughter, Virginia Taylor, eight step-children, two 
brothers, Ernest and Newton Hayes, and a sister, Vera Mae Starrett.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 17, at 
Tabernacle Baptist Church with the Revs. Randall Starrett, Charles 
White and Scott Culpepper officiating. Burial was in the church 
cemetery. Vernon Hicks, Russell Starrett, Chad White, Eric Veal, 
Adam Veal and Reggie Starrett served as pallbearers.

Survivors include three sons, Herbert Starrett, Goldmine Community 
in Hart County, Billy Starrett, Carnesville, and Wayne Starrett, 
Sandy Cross Community in Royston; daughters, Hazel Bonds and May 
White, both of Hartwell, Joanne Latimer and Elizabeth Skelton, both 
of Elberton, Linda Thompson and Margie Veal, both of Royston, 
Frances Chambers and Brenda Brooks, both of Dallas, and Fay Meadows, 
Hull; step-son, Lloyd Starrett, Hartwell; sister, Lois Davis, 
Royston; 39 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren and 
great-great-grandchildren.

Denver H. Phillips

Denver Henry Phillips died Tuesday, February 17, 2004, at NorthEast 
Medical Center, Concord, N.C.

Born in Franklin County on April 9, 1916, Mr. Phillips was the 
oldest son of the late Judge Thomas Phillips and Minnie Collins 
Phillips. He was a direct descendant of several Revolutionary 
soldiers who were among the original settlers in northeast Georgia.
 
Mr. Phillips was employed with Cannon Mills for 44 years as a weaver 
in Weave Rooms #2 and #3 at Plant 4. He retired to enjoy gardening 
and travel with his wife, Lois Cole Phillips, who passed away 
April 25, 2001. They enjoyed traveling together, as they visited 
46 states, it was stated.

Mr. Phillips and his wife were active in several square dance groups 
and enjoyed traveling and performing around the area, it was added. 
An active participant in the senior centers in Kannapolis and 
Concord, N.C., Mr. Phillips also entered the Senior Games where he 
participated in the Square Dance competition with the Golden 
Slippers Square Dance Team.

“Denver loved fishing and being out-of-doors working in his yard 
and garden,” family members said. “His efforts were recognized as 
he received ‘Yard of the Month’ on several occasions for his work 
and the beautiful flowers in the yard at the family home in 
Kannapolis. The vegetables he grew in his small garden plot were 
enjoyed by friends and family.

“He was an out-going, friendly man who never met a stranger. He 
always had a quick smile on his face.”
Mr. Phillips was a member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church, 
Kannapolis, N.C., and was active in the Seniors Group and the 
Adult Men’s Sunday School Class. He was a graduate of Sandy Cross 
School in Franklin County and also attended Bond Academy and 
Danielsville High School in Madison County.

Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by two brothers, Charlie 
Phillips, Greenwood, S.C., and Rufus Phillips, Royston; one sister, 
Kathleen Phillips Pullian, Royston; and a special cousin, Corrie 
Sinclair Linker, Kannapolis, N.C.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, February 20, 
in the chapel of Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, N.C., with 
the Rev. Tim Jernigan officiating. Burial will be in Carolina 
Memorial Park.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Phillips Schrum, and her 
husband, Vance, Davidson, N.C.; daughter, Depy Phillips Adams,
and her partner, David Abbott, Charlotte, N.C., and Tucson, 
Ariz.; grandson, Michael W. Schrum, and his wife, Dr. Laura W. 
Schrum, Huntersville, N.C.; step-granddaughter, Brooke Adams 
Stevenson, Indian Trail, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Payton 
Schrum and Alec Schrum, Huntersville, N.C.; brother, Judge 
Thomas Phillips, and his wife, Catherine, Greenwood, S.C.; and 
sister, Edna Phillips Baugh, and her husband, Albert, Comer.

Memorials may be made to Franklin Heights Baptist Church, 
526 Wright Avenue, Kannapolis, NC 28083.

The family is at 407 South East Avenue, Kannapolis, N.C., 
and was to have received friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Friday 
at the funeral home.
