Betty J. Jones

Betty Jo Jones, 71, of Danielsville, died Friday, March 3, 2000.

A native and long-time resident of Fulton County, Mrs. Jones was a 
daughter of James E. Hudson, Hogansville, and the late Arabella Hayes. 

She was employed with Foote and Davies Printing for several years in 
Atlanta before retiring and moving to Comer. Mrs. Jones was a member 
of Antioch Baptist Church, Lakewood.

Graveside services were held Sunday, March 5, at Crestlawn Memorial 
Park with the Rev. Layton Sampson officiating.

Survivors, in addition to her father, include her husband, Robert H. 
"Bob" Jones, Comer; two daughters, Deborah Diane Wood, Comer, and 
Sharon Gay Edge, Jonesboro; two sons, Robert Daniel Jones, Melbourne, 
Fla., and James Edward Jones, Atlanta; two sisters, Jean Askew, 
Royston, and Barbara Rutherford, Stone Mountain; stepmother, Frances 
Hudson, Hogansville; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, Danielsville, was in charge of 
arrangements.

J.C. Cowart

J.C. Cowart, 75, of Hull, died Saturday, March 4, 2000.

A native of Clarke County, Mr. Cowart was a son of the late Earnest 
and Annie Smith Cowart. 

He had worked for the State Highway Department of the Department of 
Transportation and was a member of Edwards Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 6, at Brown's Funeral Home, 
Danielsville, with the Rev. Dennis Kesler officiating. Burial was in 
the Hull Baptist Church cemetery. Pallbearers were Ronny Doster, Asa 
Huff, Clay Huff and Grant Culbertson.

Survivors include his wife, Essie Whitehead Cowart; two daughters, 
Robin Doster, Colbert, and Susan Huff, Hull; two sons, Lewis Cowart, 
Hull, and Nelson Cowart, Cumming; one brother, Paul Cowart, Athens; 
four sisters, all of Crawford; four grandchildren; two great-
grandchildren and nieces and nephews. 

Brown's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Craig P. Spratlin

Craig Pope Spratlin, 89, of Hull, died Monday, March 6, 2000.

A native and lifelong resident of Hull, Mr. Spratlin was a son of the 
late David Pope and Lucy Williams Spratlin.

He was a retired brick mason and a member of the Brick Layers Union. 
Mr. Spratlin, since the age of 14, was also a member of Hull Baptist 
Church, where he taught Sunday School, served as deacon for a number 
of years and served as building superintendent during a construction 
period.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 8, at Hull Baptist Church 
with the Rev. Randy Crowe officiating. Burial was in the church 
cemetery. George Cronic, George Adair, Lance Thomason, O.P. Jones, 
Lawrence Tolbert and Charles Dooley served as pallbearers. Members of 
the Character Builders Sunday School Class served as honorary 
pallbearers.

Survivors include his wife, Reba Johnson Spratlin; daughter and 
son-in-law, Sharon Spratlin and Charles "Chip" Reid, Hull; one sister, 
Ruby Stewart, Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, William Spratlin and Ted 
Spratlin, both of Hull; three grandchildren, Craig Reid, Rachel Reid 
and Molly Reid; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, was in charge of arrangements.

Curt Young

Curt "J.C." Young, 72, of Comer, died Sunday, March 5, 2000.

A native of Oglethorpe County, Mr. Young was a son of the late Shelton 
Barnett and Jesmer May Meadow Young. 

He was a forester and farmer and was a member of Collier Baptist Church. 
Mr. Young was preceded in death by a son, Wayne Young.

Graveside services were held Monday, March 6, in Arnoldsville Cemetery 
with the Rev. Terry Smith officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva Booth Young; two sons, Roy Young and 
Melvin Young, both of Comer; one sister, Louise Hilliard, Colbert; four 
grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Curtis H. Nelms

Curtis Howard Nelms, 72, of Hull, died Sunday, March 5, 2000.

Mr. Nelms was born in Clarke County, a son of the late William Howard 
and Ossie Le Genia Sorrow Nelms.

He had worked in Clarke County and was of the Baptist denomination.

Mr. Nelms was preceded in death by a son, Clarence H. Nelms.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 8, at Victory Baptist 
Church with the Rev. Elmer Butler officiating. Burial was in Sorrow-
Patterson Cemetery. Michael Nelms, Joey Williams, John Taylor, Earnie 
Shaw, Lynn Shedd and Theron Fortson served as pallbearers.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva Fleming Nelms; one daughter, Nancy 
Shedd, Hull; one step-daughter, Frances Drake, Eastonollee; three 
sons, Jerry Nelms, Danielsville, and Wayne Nelms and Tony Nelms, both 
of Hull; four sisters, Lucille Faulkner, Hull, Charlene Carithers, 
Bogart, Virginia Myers, Bishop, and Dorothy Dalton, Watkinsville; 
four brothers, J.W. Nelms, Bogart, Lee Nelms, Eaton, Joe Nelms, 
Watkinsville, and Donald Nelms, Lexington; eight grandchildren, three 
step-grandchildren, one great-grandchild, 28 nieces and nephews and 33 
great-nieces and nephews.

Thelma P. Orr

Mrs. Thelma Potts Orr, 91, of Signal Mountain, Tenn., formerly of 
Nicholson, died Saturday, March 4, 2000, at Alexian Health Care Center.

Mrs. Orr was born February 6, 1909, in Madison County. She was a 
daughter of the late Lester William and Vessie Alberta Hutchins Potts, 
and was the widow of Fred L. Orr. 

She was a graduate of Central High School, Chattanooga, Tenn., and a 
1930 graduate of the University of Chattanooga. Mrs. Orr received a 
master's degree in education in 1952 and a specialist's degree in 
education in 1971 from the University of Georgia. She began her career 
as a teacher at Benton High School in Nicholson, then became county 
curriculum director for Jackson and Madison Counties. She ended her 
career as a vocational education specialist with the Georgia Department 
of Education.

Mrs. Orr was a member of Nicholson Baptist Church. She was preceded in 
death by her husband, Fred L. Orr.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 7, at Little-Ward Funeral 
Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Allen Seagraves officiating. Burial was 
in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.

Survivors include one son, William J. Orr, Chattanooga, Tenn., one 
granddaughter, Lori O. Stansell, Signal Mountain, Tenn.; one grandson, 
William J. Orr Jr., Austin, Texas; and four great-grandchildren, Trey 
Stansell and Will Stansell, both of Signal Mountain, Tenn., and Katie 
Orr and Mary Orr, both of Austin, Texas.

Little-Ward Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Julia T. Young

Mrs. Julia Thaxton Young, 91, of Crawford, died Thursday, March 2, 2000.

Mrs. Young was a daughter of the late Henry Lee and Carrie Judson Wynn 
Thaxton.

She was a quilter and was a member of Rock Methodist Church. Mrs. 
Thaxton was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Roper Young. 

Funeral services were held Sunday, March 5, at Lord & Stephens Funeral 
Home, Oglethorpe Chapel, with the Rev. Randy Strickland officiating. 
Burial was in Wynn-Thaxton Cemetery. Pallbearers were Carl Young, 
Richard Smith, John Crowley, Trey Crowley, Mark Collingsworth and Scott 
Burgess.

Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Crowley, Athens, and Mary Maico, 
Atlanta; one son, Edwin Young, Stephens; one sister, Allene Escoe, 
Colbert; five grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, four great-great-
grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to Greene Point Health Care, 1321 
Washington Highway, Union Point, GA 30669.

Mary E. Waters

Mrs. Mary Eula Parks Waters, 85, of Gainesville, died Friday, 
February 11, 2000, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville, 
following an extended illness.

A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Waters was a daughter of the late 
Ernest and Minnie Day Parks. 

She was a member of Central Baptist Church. Mrs. Waters was preceded 
in death by her husband, James Ernest Waters.

Funeral services were held Sunday, February 13, in the chapel of 
Memorial Park Funeral Home, Gainesville, with Dr. Larry Tomlin and 
the Rev. Phil Parks officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, James Michael and Debbie 
Allison Waters, Flowery Branch; sons, Tommy Parks Waters and Stephen 
Day Waters, both of Gainesville; one daughter, Mary Waters Farmer, 
Flowery Branch; two brothers, John David Parks, Athens, and Bobby 
Parks, Hull; one sister, Grace Edwards, Jacksonville, Fla.; and five 
sisters-in-law, Billie Parks, Flowery Branch, Agnes Parks, 
Watkinsville, Leila Parks, Commerce, and Helen Waters and Cathleen 
Waters, both of Gainesville; grandchildren, Michael and Wendy Farmer 
and Mark and Janice Farmer, all of Gainesville, and Melinda Allison 
Waters and Whitney Jade Waters, both of Flowery Branch; and one great-
grandson, Brayson James Farmer, Gainesville. 

Memorial Park Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Cleo Baugus

Cleo Baugus, 75, of Bogart, died Thursday, March 2, 2000.

A native of Franklin County, Mr. Baugus was the son of the late John 
Wesley and Minnie Baugus. 

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. 

Mr. Baugus lived most of his life in Oconee County and was retired 
from DeKalb Poultry Farms. He was a member of Whitehall Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 4, at Mars Hill Baptist 
Church with the Rev. Buford Lockman officiating. Burial was in the 
church cemetery. Pallbearers were James Whitehead, Richard Whitehead, 
Eric Keith, Marion Odom, Andrew Whitehead, Henry David and Carl Hall.

Survivors include his wife, Leola Baugus; one daughter, JoAnn Keith, 
Bogart; one son, Leon Whitehead, Sanford Community; six grandchildren 
and nine great-grandchildren.

Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, West, was in charge of arrangements.

William H. Belk Jr.

William Howard Belk Jr., 81, of Danielsville, died Tuesday, 
March 7, 2000.

Mr. Belk was born in Franklin County, a son of the late William 
Howard Belk Sr. and Eva Robinson Belk.

He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. Mr. 
Belk had worked in the textile industry and was a member of Wesley 
Chapel Methodist Church. 

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Belk.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 9, in the 
chapel of Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville, with the Rev. Wayne 
Douglas officiating. Burial will be in the Wesley Chapel Methodist 
Church cemetery. Lester Morrison, Howard Johnson, Russ Dillard, Greg 
Dillard, Mike Bonds and Dale Rice will serve as pallbearers.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth Lord Belk; one daughter, 
Pam Moates, Greensboro; one son, Sonny Belk, Danielsville; four 
sisters, Mauzee Bonds, Danielsville, Helen Bradley, Ila, Jean Rice, 
Travelers Rest, S.C., and Peggy Izquierdo, Lawrenceville; four 
grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday 
at the funeral home.
