I'm looking for my 3G-Grandmother, Elizabeth Cummings Johnson/Johnston. She was born about 1810 in GA, and married Moses Johnston about 1830/32. They were in either Macon, Bibb County or Macon County until the late 1840's when they moved to Claiborne Parish, LA, where I found them in the 1850 census. Children in 1850 included John J, Geo W, Benj F, Alvenia R, Jason, Thomas, William and Isaac. They were in TX, most likely Shelby Co, before 1860. I've not found Moses and Elizabeth in any 1860 census; however, John is in the 1860 Shelby Co TX census with Thomas, William, Martha and Sarah. Moses appears in the 1870 Shelby Co TX census without Elizabeth but with several more children. I have information on a few of the children including Alvenia who married Stephen F. Ray, b 1829 in Upson Co GA, son of George W and Mary Nelson Ray.

Just a hello to say thanks for putting family bible of
Gray Cummings on the internet.
My great grandfather was Benjamin Alford Chapman, son
of Levina Cummings and William M. Chapman.
Benjamin Alford Chapman married Mary An Bryan,
daughter of Needham Bryan and Eliza Singleton.
Benjamin and Mary An had several daughters and two
sons, the younger was named Solomon Alford Chapman and
one of his sons was named James Alford Chapman.
I've started "looking" at the Alfords of Wayne County,
NC and Jefferson County, GA. Looks like Penelope's
father was Benjamin Alford and Benjamin's father was
William Alford. What do you think?

My ggfather Benjamin Alford Chapman married Mary An(n)
Bryan. Another brother, William Henderson Chapman,
married Nancy Bryan, and a third brother married
another of Needham's daughters. A fourth brother
married a Bryant, either Burwell Bryant's daughter, or
an orphan who lived in a Chapman's household,
according to another census record. The oldest
daughter, Sarah, (Rev. Wallis Willis listed her as
Sarah Ann Elizabeth and married to a Bryan with two
children.) may have married a Bryan, not one of
Needham's, who was killed during the Civil War. I
found a copy of her death certificate in the Buena
Vista, GA., courthouse which did not give her first
name and listed her as single. I know death
certificates as well as marriage certificates
sometimes contain the wrong information, but that is
what was on this one. The dates of birth and death,
as well as place of burial, appear to be correct.

Also, one source has
William and Levina's oldest daughter, Sarah married to
a Bryan and having two children. I don't know about
that one. I found her death certificate and it listed
her as female Chapman, no first names and said she was
single. It had her father as William Chapman of SC
and that she was born in Monroe Co., GA. Born Oct 20,
1834, and died 16 Mar 1922, of pneumonia, buried at
Tazewell Cemetery, Tazewell, GA. from Julia Selvester 10 Jul 2004

I, William McDowell of said State and County being of advanced age but of sound disposing mind and memory, knowing that I must shortly depart this life deem it right and proper both as respects myself and my family that I should make a disposition of the property with which a kind providence has blessed me. I do hereby make this my last will and testament hereby revoking and annulling all others heretofore made by me.
First I desire and direct that my body be buried in a decent and christian like manner suitable to my circumstances and condition in life.
2nd I desire and direct that all my just debts be paid by my Executor hereinafter named and appointed.
3rd I give and bequeath to my daughter Lucinda Cherry wife of Robert Cherry all my notes accounts and other evidences of indebtedness to me with the exception of one note on Jn. Parish. Seventyfive dollars of which note I give to Robert Cherry in trust for the use and benefit of my daughter Mary Eliz McDowell the balance of said note to my daughter Lucinda Cherry.
4th To my children Martha McGlamery, John McDowell, William Madison McDowell, and my daughter Emily Jernigan, I give one house and lot in Taylor County Georgia said house and lot being South of and about two and a half miles from Reynolds, and containing four acres, more or less, said house and lot being near Asa Marshall's in said County of Taylor, said house and lot I give to them equally share and share alike.
5th To my son Myles Lafayette McDowell I give one dollar in United States Currency.
6th To my wife Frances McDowell I give one dollar in United States Currency.
7th Alll other proeprty of which I may die seized and promised not herein bequeathed or herein mentioned too which I may be entitled I give equally to my children excepting my son Lafayette McDowell he receiving in the 5th item of this will all I intend to give him. Also in the sixth item of my will I have given to my wife Frances McDowell all that I intend to give her.
I hereby constitute and apoint my son in law Robert Cherry Executor to this my last will and testamnet. This May 25, 1869. William McDowell (his mark)

letter from Mary Crawford Bryan 1943:
"Still another married one of Mary Lofley's half brothers, a man named Cummings. Both died early, leaving one son, James, who was just my father's age & who was brought up by Nathan & his wife in their own family as my grandfather was his guardian.
Papa was deeply devoted to Jim as long as he lived. Jim outlived him. It seems that Jim's father left him a good deal of property, which was turned over to him, when he became of age. He soon ran through with it (my grandmother's words) & married a girl of whom she deeply disapproved {Ireney Gassett}
Cousin Jim came to see us just about once a year. He had a large family. They lived kinda from hand to mouth. We children loved Cousin Jim's visit & loved to listen to him & papa talk of their youthful escapades. He never stayed long, nor would he ever accept any financial aid from my father. His wife was a "Gassett." She outlived him by a good many years. His oldest daughter was named for my grandmother & one son was named Jasper. He always spoke very tenderly of Uncle Nathan & Aunt Polly. That accounts for three of Little's daughter & Nathan's sisters. There were others, I dimly remember visits from, but their names have gone from me."

Pretty Country Home Burned Last Thursday
About four o’clock last Thursday afternoon was destroyed by fire the home of Mr. C.A. Windham together with all the contents of the building.
This place will be better remembered as the Wallace or Stokes place, three and half miles north of Butler. Besides Mr. Windham the house was occupied by his son, Mr. Otis Windham and family.
There was no one at home at the time the fire started except one of the small children of Mr. Windham, and he could give no account of the origin save the fact that the fire started in a pile of lint cotton stored in one room of the building. He reported the fire as soon as discovered, to his mother, who was visiting for the afternoon at the home of Mrs. J.G. Stokes, a near neighbor.
When Mrs. Windham arrived at the scene of the fire the house was too far gone to save anything whatever of the contents of the home.
There was no insurance on either building or furniture, and is a serious
financial loss to Mr. Windham, who has the sincere sympathy of his many friends.
Many have contributed in a financial way to Mr. Windham’s loss, and others are requested to see Mr. G.W. Bivins and do so.

At the residence of the bride’s father Mr. T.J. Windham, a few miles southwest
of Reynolds, Tuesday evening the 6th inst., at 7:00 o’clock, Mr. W.D. Copeland,
of Notasulgee, Ala., to Miss Sallie Windham, of Taylor County; Judge J.E.
Davant officiating.
The bride is one of Taylor’s most lovely young ladies, who has made many
friends by her sweet disposition and easy manners. The groom is a very
energetic and enterprising young gentleman, who is well known in this section,
who was once a commercial tourist, but now one of Alabama’s most successful
young farmers.
After the ceremony the bride and groom, together with a few of the most
intimate friends and relatives were invited into the spacious dining hall where
they found a table ladened with all the good things that takes to tempt the
most fastidious appetite. May they live long, be happy and useful all their

REYNOLDS - Mrs. Eula Parks Bryan, 89, died Wednesday.
Arrangements will be announced by Goddard Funeral Home of
Reynolds.
Mrs. Bryan, a native of Taylor County, was a homemaker and a
retired farmer. She was a member of New Hope Primitive
Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Junior B. Souther of
Macon; four sisters, Mrs. Fronie Windham of Wildwood, Fla.,
and Mrs. Ada Roundtree, Miss Lonie Bettie Parks, and Mrs.
Susan Baldinelli, all of Reynolds; a grandson, Preston
"Chip" Souther of Macon; a granddaughter; and two great-
grandchildren.

JOHN JAKE BRYAN
Funeral services were held Friday, December 29, 1978 for
John Jake Bryan, 84 year old resident of Reynolds, Georgia.
Mr. Bryan died Thursday, December 29, 1978 at Oaks Nursing
Home. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Reynolds
Baptist Church.
Graveside services were held at the HILLCREST CEMETERY in
Reynolds. with Rev. Joe Porterfield conducting. Pallbearers
- Not Copied.
Mr. Bryan is survived by one son, John M. Bryan of
Montezuma; one step-son, Ret. Col. Lovie E. Wright of
Ambler, Pa.; two daughters, Mrs. Mary B. Harpe of
Jacksonville, Florida; Mrs. Roy C. Holloway of Thomaston,
Ga.; a sister-in-law, Mrs. C. C. Bryan of Reynolds, Ga.
seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were by Watson-Mathews Funeral Home.
