State Sen. Roberts dies at 62

                              Associated Press

ATLANTA -- State Sen. Sam Roberts never let his battle with
cancer get in the way of his duties at the Capitol, where he showed
up for work even when chemotherapy left him weak and nauseated.
Roberts died Monday night at age 62. Friends said the
Douglasville Republican had planned to return for the 2000
legislative session, which starts next week, until his health took
a turn for the worse at Christmas.
''He knew that the odds were not good, but he was focused,''
said Senate Minority Leader Eric Johnson, R-Savannah. ''He didn't
want to quit and he didn't want to take a long vacation. He wanted
to end his life at the Capitol, serving the people of his
     district.''
Roberts, who ran his own insurance agency in Douglasville, was
elected to the Senate in 1996. He was diagnosed with lung cancer
days before he was re-elected in 1998.
Roberts moved a leather recliner into his Capitol Hill office
and often napped between meetings. But he never missed a day of the
legislative session last year, even on days when he took
     chemotherapy in the morning.
''I had made a commitment to the people in the district that I
was going to represent them,'' Roberts said in an interview last
year. ''I'm pretty strong on commitments.''
Despite his deteriorating health, Roberts continued to work
until last week helping constituents with problems, said Sen. Bill
Stephens, who shared an office suite with Roberts.
''He would call in and get his messages, or have somebody call
and get his messages, and he would do his best to return the calls
and do what he could,'' said Stephens, R-Canton.
Never one to seek the spotlight, Roberts rarely rose to speak
during debates and introduced few bills. He wasn't much for
     partisan sniping, either.
''If the lieutenant governor or the other side was going to get
mad at a Republican, it wasn't going to be Sam Roberts,'' Johnson
     said.
Stephens described his friend as a rare politician who ''always
gets caught doing what he said he was going to do.''
Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor, the Senate's presiding officer, said he
was ''profoundly saddened'' by Roberts' death.
''It is a great tragedy that his career as a legislator was cut
short, and I extend my deepest sympathies to his family,'' Taylor
     said in a statement.
Last year, Roberts set his hopes on passing a single bill aimed
at giving police better tools to crack down on uninsured drivers.
Johnson said Republicans plan to keep pushing the measure this
     year.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Heritage
     Baptist Church in Douglasville.
Gov. Roy Barnes will order a special election to fill Roberts'
Senate seat, but no date had been announced Tuesday evening, said
     Joselyn Butler, the governor's spokeswoman.
Roberts is survived by his wife, Sue, his mother, two children,
     a stepdaughter and two grandchildren.
