        Rafael Alberti
        Poet
MADRID, Spain -- Rafael Alberti, a renowned poet and the last
survivor of Spain's Generation of '27 artistic group, died
     Thursday. He was 96.
Alberti became a member of Spain's Communist Party and was
heavily involved in leftist politics in the 1930s. He started the
revolutionary magazine Octubre (October) in 1934.
The Generation of '27 was a loosely-knit group of writers,
artists and filmmakers that included the likes of Federico Garcia
Lorca, Juan Ramon Jimenez, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and Luis
     Bunuel.
The group took its name from the year -- 1927 -- when Alberti
and other literary figures met in Seville to pay homage to 17th
century Spanish poet Luis de Gongora. Its members became some of
the leading protagonists of the Surrealist movement.

     Forrest Anderson
        Basketball coach
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Forrest ''Forddy'' Anderson, a basketball
coach who led Michigan State University to the Final Four in 1957,
died Monday from complications of pneumonia. He was 80.
Anderson coached from 1954-65. He had a 125-124 record that
included a tie for the Big Ten title in 1956-57 and an outright
championship in 1958-59. He was fired in 1965 after a 5-18 season
and a last-place finish in the conference.

     Wes Berggren
        Musician
DALLAS -- Wes Berggren, a guitarist and pianist for the
psychedelic rock group Tripping Daisy, was found dead in his
     apartment Wednesday. He was 28.
Investigators are awaiting the results of toxicology tests to
determine the cause of death. Police said foul play was not
     suspected.
Berggren's wife discovered his body in their Dallas apartment.
Tripping Daisy blossomed onto the pop charts in 1995 with ''I
Got a Girl.'' a quirky single that propelled the group's second
album, ''I Am an Elastic Firecracker,'' to sales of nearly 300,000.
Sales of the band's third album, ''Jesus Hits Like the Atom
Bomb,'' were sluggish, though. Island Records dropped them in 1998
as part of its merger between Universal and PolyGram Records, The
     Dallas Morning News reported today.
Their core fans remained true, and the group, which formed in
the late '80s at the University of North Texas, had been performing
at clubs around Dallas and Fort Worth in recent years.

     Leonard E. Boyle
ROME (AP) -- The Rev. Leonard E. Boyle, who led the Vatican
Library into the age of computer catalogs and gift merchandising,
     died Monday. He was 75.
During his 13 at the Vatican, Boyle oversaw the world's largest
     collection of ancient manuscripts.
As keeper of manuscripts and chief librarian, he modernized the
library by computerizing its old catalogs and wiring the main
     reading room for computers.
He also tried to make money by selling the rights to its
     warehouse of images.
Boyle was in charge of the library when Ohio State University
professor Anthony Melnikas stole pages from an ancient manuscript
once owned by the 14th century Italian poet Francesco Petrach.
Melnikas was sentenced to 14 months in prison and fined $3,000 for
     theft.
In 1996, the Vatican was forced to pay the equivalent of $8.8
million plus $1.3 million in attorney's fees to settle a lawsuit
that resulted from Boyle's sale of exclusive rights to reproduce
     library images.
It is unclear if the two incidents led the Vatican to dismiss
Boyle in 1997 or if he accepted early retirement.

     Frank DeVol
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Frank DeVol, a composer who wrote scores for
more than 50 films and received Oscar nominations for ''Hush ...
Hush, Sweet Charlotte,'' ''Pillow Talk'' and ''Guess Who's Coming
to Dinner,'' died Wednesday. He was 88.
In addition to movie scores, he also wrote the theme music for
television shows including ''My Three Sons'' and ''The Brady
     Bunch.''
He later took on roles as a character actor, appearing in
''Parent Trap,'' ''Fernwood Tonight,'' ''I'm Dickens, He's
     Fenster'' and ''Silver Spoons.''
He later wrote radio studio arrangements for stars including
Rudy Vallee, Ginny Simms, Jack Carson, Doris Day, Kay Starr, Tony
     Bennett and Vic Damone.

     Ben Johnson
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Ben Johnson, who grew up poor in
Texas and became one of the biggest real estate deal makers in Palm
Beach, died Friday of cancer. He was 64.
Johnson joked that his childhood in Dallas was so poor his only
toy was an old mayonnaise jar. But in 1980, he sold the El Solano
oceanfront mansion to Yoko Ono and John Lennon.
In 1985, Johnson's wealthy and much older wife of two decades,
Johanna C.C. ''Ancky'' Johnson, sued for divorce. He requested
alimony sufficient to maintain the lifestyle he had come to enjoy.
Charges of drug use and extramarital affairs made the messy
split the talk of the island. Still, the two remained friends and
Johnson was at his ex-wife's bedside when she died three years ago.
