      Myrtie Vickery Buffington, 93, of 511 Grogan St. died Wednesday,
   Sept. 3, 1997.
      A native of Hart County, Mrs. Buffington was a daughter of the late
   James Shannon and Nelia Madden Vickery and the widow of Carl Robert
   Buffington. She was a homemaker and a member of Shoal Creek Baptist
   Church.
      Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Hamby-Weldon Funeral
   Home with the Rev. J. Harbin Sanders officiating. Burial will be in
   Shoal Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
      Survivors include three daughters, Launa Isbell, Geraldine Isbell
   and Patricia Cole, all of Lavonia; two sons, Robert Buffington Jr.,
   Atlanta, and Alton D. Buffington, Marietta; a sister, Louise Vickery,
   Lavonia; a brother, Mariet Vickery, Lavonia; 10 grandchildren; nine
   great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
      The family is at the residence.
   Sam Dowdy
   Athens
      Sam Dowdy, 88, of 188 Parkview Extension died Tuesday, Sept. 2,
   1997.
      A native of Oglethorpe County, Mr. Dowdy was a son of the late Leah
   Brightwell and Roy Nunnally and was raised by Gene Dowdy. He was a
   member of Arnolds Grove Baptist Church in Arnoldsville.
      Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Arnolds Grove
   Baptist Church with the Rev. William Johnson officiating. Burial will
   be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at
   noon.
      Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Dowdy; a daughter, Selomia
   Hunter, Athens; two sisters, Lizzie Harper, Crawford, and Bessie
   Drake, Bogart; two brothers, Andrew Dowdy, Detroit, and Hoyt Nunnally,
   Atlanta; and nieces and nephews.
      The family is at the residence.
      Mack & Payne Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
   Jesse Jackson
   Austell
      Jesse Jackson, 93, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 1997.
      A native of Little Rock, Ark., Mr. Jackson was retired after 28
   years as a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier. He was a member of
   Mount Paran Church of God.
      Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at White Columns
   Funeral Chapel, Mableton. Burial will be in Westview Cemetery.
      Survivors include a daughter, Grace Johnsa, Mableton; three sons,
   Robert Jackson and David Jackson, both of Austell, and Dr. James E.
   Jackson, Athens; a sister, Louise Foster, Decatur; 11 grandchildren;
   and 14 great-grandchildren.
      The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
   Fred Mayfield
   Philadelphia
      Fred Edward Mayfield, 47, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 1997.
      A native of Hart County, Mr. Mayfield was a son of the late L.D.
   and Willie Mayfield. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and a member
   of Hartwell First Baptist Church.
      Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mack's Funeral
   Home, Hartwell.
      Survivors include his wife, Rita Mayfield; a son, Keith Mayfield,
   Philadelphia; a sister, Patricia Mayfield, Hartwell; and three
   brothers, Columbus Lee Mayfield and Prentis Mayfield, both of
   Hartwell, and Willie D. Mayfield, Philadelphia.
      In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hartwell First
   Baptist Church Building Fund.
   John Poulnott
   Newark, Ohio
      John Wayne Poulnott, 50, of 1575 N. 21st St., formerly of
   Greensboro, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 1997.
      A native of Greenwood, S.C., Mr. Poulnott was a son of John
   Alexander and Floy Gabriel Poulnott of Greensboro. An Air Force
   veteran, he was retired from Owens-Corning and was a member of
   Community Wesleyan Church, American Legion Post 85 and GMP Local 224.
      Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Wesley Chapel Wesleyan
   Church, Greensboro, with the Revs. Sherwin Finch and Dana Ingersoll
   officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
      Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his wife, Connie L.
   Higdon Poulnott; a daughter, Laura Angela Poulnott Carr, Newark, Ohio;
   two sons, James Michael Poulnott and John William Poulnott, both of
   Newark; a sister, Donna Phylis Poulnott, Greensboro; two brothers,
   Dale Poulnott, Auburn, and Jack Poulnott Jr., Wadesboro, N.C.; and a
   grandchild.
      Pallbearers will be members of the Robins Air Force Base Honor
   Guard. Honorary pallbearers will be Albert McNair, Jimmy Walker,
   Johnny Lewis, Butch Jackson, Raymond Smallwood and Jim Carr.
      The family will receive friends 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Saturday at
   McCommons Funeral Home, Greensboro.
   Myrtle M. Ripley
   Watkinsville
      Myrtle M. Ripley, 82, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 1997.
      A native of Madison, Maine, Mrs. Ripley was a daughter of the late
   Charles and Gladys Burwood Duplisea and the widow of William K.
   Ripley. She was preceded in death by a son, William Kendall Ripley Jr.
   She attended Watkinsville First Christian Church.
      Graveside memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Oconee
   Memorial Park with family friend Starr Lee delivering the eulogy.
      Survivors include two sons, Charles Peter Ripley, Tallahassee,
   Fla., and James Allen Ripley, Berkeley, Calif.; a brother, Bill
   Greene, Madison, Maine; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and
   nieces and nephews.
      In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Athens Area
   Homeless Shelter, 620 Barber St., Athens, Ga. 30601.

   Ann Scarborough
   Royston
      Ann Sartain Scarborough, 66, of 143 Bowers St. died Wednesday,
   Sept. 3, 1997.
      A native of Madison County, Mrs. Scarborough was a daughter of the
   late Samuel Lee and Ina Mae Martin Sartain and the widow of Jimmy
   Scarborough. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl Sartain
   and Paul Sartain. She was a homemaker and a member of Jones Chapel
   United Methodist Church in Danielsville.
       Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today at Jones Chapel United
   Methodist Church with the Revs. Martin T. Coile and Marvin Coffee
   officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
      Survivors include three children, Dianne S. Scarboro, Royston, and
   Cheryl and Tom Chasteen, Athens; a sister, Ruth Gordon, Danielsville;
   three brothers, Sam Sartain, Ila, and Neal Sartain and Max Sartain,
   both of Danielsville; five grandchildren, Marie Roberts and Stoney
   Roberts, both of Lavonia, and Jim Chasteen, Jon Chasteen and Joy
   Chasteen, all of Athens; and two great-grandchildren, Toni Roberts and
   Tiffany Roberts, both of Lavonia.
      Pallbearers will be Donald Sartain, Kent Sartain, Sam Sartain,
   Terry Sartain, Bill Sartain and Mike Gordon.

      Charles D. Shelton, 63, of 1140 Appalchee River Road died Thursday,
   Sept. 4, 1997.
      A native of Oconee County, Mr. Shelton was a son of the late
   Leonard Shelton and Katie Worley. He was a dairyman.
      Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Simmons Funeral Home
   with the Revs. Roger Whitley and Walter Venable officiating. Burial
   will be in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. The body will be placed in
   the church at 1 p.m.
      Survivors include his wife, Linda P. Shelton; three daughters,
   Frances Guinn, Kate Strozier and Melinda Walden, all of Madison; two
   sons, David Shelton and Joseph Shelton, both of Madison; four sisters,
   Margaret Patat, Hull, Ruby Daves, Madison, Katie Kelley, Farmington,
   and Vadie Hunt, Greensboro; seven grandchildren; and two
   great-grandchildren.

   Ruby Tolbert
   Jefferson
      Ruby Louise Dalton Tolbert, 88, of 817 Lynn Ave. died Thursday,
   Sept. 4, 1997.
      A native of Gwinnett County, Mrs. Tolbert was a daughter of the
   late Thomas Jefferson and Alma Mae Summers Dalton and the widow of
   Charlie A. Tolbert. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Doris
   Doster. She was retired after 40 years as a spinner at Jefferson
   Mills, served 36 years as a Sunday school teacher and was a member of
   Jefferson Christian Church.
      Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jackson Funeral Home
   with the Rev. Kenneth Law officiating. Burial will be in Woodbine
   Cemetery.
      Survivors include a daughter, Janie Tolbert Cotton, Jefferson; a
   son, Nelson Tolbert, Jefferson; six grandchildren; nine
   great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
      Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

   Callie Winkfield
   Athens
      Callie Brown Winkfield, 103, of 249 Magnolia St. died Wednesday,
   Sept. 3, 1997.
      A native of Clarke County, Mrs. Winkfield was a daughter of the
   late Jean and Emma Brown and the widow of George Winkfield Sr. She was
   retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Athens and was a member of
   Timothy Baptist Church.
      Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Timothy Baptist
   Church with the Rev. Jerry F. Hutchins officiating. Burial will be in
   Brooklyn Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m.
      Survivors include two daughters, Josie Meadows and Georgia Bell
   Scott, both of Philadelphia; two sons, George Wingfield Jr. and
   William "Seanie" Wingfield, both of Athens; and several grandchildren,
   great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
      The family is at the home of George Wingfield, 251 Magnolia St.
