ROBERT LEE WILSON, 95 OF FRANKLIN, DIED FEB. 28, 2002. MR.
WILSON WAS BORN IN HEARD COUNTY ON NOV. 25, 1906,  SON OF
THE LATE ROBERT LEE WILSON SR., AND LEE ANNA McSWAIN WILSON.
HE WAS A GRADUATE OF HOGANSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL AND ATTENDED
MERCER UNIVERSITY. HE WAS A RETIRED HEARD COUNTY POSTMASTER.
HE WAS ONE OF THE OLDEST MEMBERS OF FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF
FRANKLIN AND HAD BEEN A SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER. THE WAS
INSTRUMENTAL IN THE BUILDING OF HEARD COUNTY MEMORIAL
HOSPITAL. AFTER HIS RETIREMENT HE HELPED WITH THE
RESTORATION OF THE BETHEL HEARD BAPTIST CHURCH. HE WAS A
MEMBER OF THE HEARD COUNTY LIONS CLUB, THE CHATTAHOOCHEE
MASONIC LODGE #61 AND THE HEARD COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY.
SURVIVORS INCLUDE HIS DAUGHTER, ANN MATHEWS OF NEWNAN; ONE
GRANDSON AND THREE GRANDDAUGHTERS. FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE
SATURDAY, MARCH 2, AT 2 P.M. AT THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH IN
FRANKLIN WITH THE REV. DON HELMS OFFICIATING. BURIAL WILL

Leona GREEN, 85, of 325 Pine Circle, Bowdon, died Feb. 28,
2002. Born Aug. 13, 1916, in Carroll County, daughter of the
late Jim and Rosie Sims Smith. She was preceded in death by
her husband, Maner Green; sons, James Lee Dawson, Paul Green
and Lewis Green; eight sisters and three brothers. Survivors
include her daughters and son-in-law, Wilona Dauson, Martha
(Charlie) Buchanan and Barbara Green, all of Bowdon, and
Willie Ruth Ward of Atlanta; sons and daughters-in-law,
Willie Ralph (Pricilla) Dawson of Carrollton, William
(Luvonia) Green, and LeRoy (Sadie) Green, all of Atlanta;
brother-in-law, Barney Green of Bowdon; sisters-in-law, Eva
May Smith of Carrollton and Annie Bell Porter of Atlanta ;
and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces
and nephews. Services will be Saturday, March 2, at 3 p.m.
at Flint Ridge Baptist Church in Bowdon. Burial following in

Mrs. Lucille Oaks PHILLIPS, 80, of 158 Old Sand Hill Road,
Carrollton, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002. Born June 10, 1921,
in Corning, Ark. to the late Leslie Oaks and Mabale
Greenwood Oaks. Besides her parents, she was preceded in
death by her husband, Virgle Phillips and a sister, Patricia
Waychoff. Survivors include her sister, Marlene Travers of
Florissant, Mo.; brother, Joseph Oaks of St. Louis, Mo.;
sister-in-law, Betty Ridge of Granite City, Ill.; brothers-
in-law, Bill Phillips of Granite City, Ill., Robert Phillips
of Orange, Texas, Walter Waychoff of Carrollton; Donald
Phillips of Masa, Ariz., and Kenny Phillips of Carlyle,
Ill,. and nieces and nephews. Services were Feb. 27 at
Thomas Saksa Funeral Home in Granite City, Ill. Burial was
in Sunset Memorial Estates in Edwardsville, Ill. Martin &
Hightower Funeral Home, Carrollton. 


J.D. MURRAY, 79, of Jacksonville, Ala., died Feb. 28, 2002.
Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Sara and
Larry Dixon, and Sherry Johnston, all of Jacksonville, Ala.;
son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Danny and Debbie Murray of
Carrollton; sister, Mary Trawick Hupp of Jacksonville, Ala.;
five grandchildren, Terry BenSaid, Daniel Murray, Kristy
Murray, April Jordan, and Lyndsey Johnston; three great-
grandchildren; three nieces and four nephews. Services will
be held Sunday, March 3, at 2 p.m. at K.L. Brown Funeral
Home and Cremation Center Chapel with Rev. Billy Joe Murray

Leland Chester MOSLEY JR.,  40 of Tallapoosa died in an
automobile accident on Feb. 22, 2002. Born Feb. 21, 1961, in
Bremen, Haralson Co., son of Dorothy Sloan and the late L.C.
Mozley Sr. He was a policeman for the City of Buchanan from
1987 tp 1993 and was a volunteer fireman during that time.
From 1993 to 2002, he was employed by the Tallapoosa Police
Dept. He was a sergeant in charge of his day shift, the
field training new recruits; was SWAT-certified and a SWAT
team leader. He also worked part time for the Public Works
Dept. of the city of Tallapoosa. Along with Scott Worthy, he
received a Life Saving Award for pulling people out of
burning house. Survivors include his wife of 20 years,
Deborah Patterson Mozley; sons, Nathan Mosey of Buchanan,
Chad Mosley, Joshua Mosley and daughter, Jennifer Mosley,
all of Tallapoosa; sisters and brothers-in-law, Karla and
James Anderson of Fort Payne, Ala., Rosie and Steve Poole of
Rome; brother-inlaw, Richard Paterson of Dallas, Ga.; one
granddaughter and a number of nieces, nephews, aunts and
uncles. Services were Feb. 24, 2002 at the Tallapoosa First
Baptist Church with Larry Yarbrough, Chaplin of the
Tallapoosa Police Dept. officiating. Pallbeares: Nathan
Mosley, Chad Mosley, Josh Mosley, richard Patterson, Joe
Robinson, Mike Daniels, Mark Worthy, and Scott Worthy.
Honorary pallbearers: Daniel Underwood, Tallapoosa Police
Dept. Law Enforcement, and Public Safety Personnel. Burial
followed in the Buchanan City Cemetery.Miller Funeral Home,
Tallapoosa. 


Henrietta Moore PAYTON, 78 of Hotel St., Austell, died Feb
28, 2002. Born Dec. 23, 1923, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Homer
Moore. She married Emmett Payton on Dec. 8, 1943. Survivors
include daughters, Dorthy Watkins, Mae Sims, Loretta
Coleman; sons, Samuel Payton and Willie Payton; sisters,
Juanita Durham; brothers Homer Moore and Milton Moore; three
sisters-in-law, two sons-in-law and a number of
grandchildren, great-grandchildern and other relatives.
Services will be Sunday march 3, at 3 p.m. at Causey Chapel
Baptist Church in Austell with Rev. Elebee officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Walker-Wilson
Evergreen, Villa Rica.

Joseph `Junior` ROOKS, 73, of Arnco died Friday, March 1,
2002. Born April 13, 1928, in Coweta Co., Ga. He retired
from Newnan city government after 19 years of service.
Survivors are his wife, Ruth McLain Rooks of Arnco; daughter
and son-in-law, Barbara and Gary King of Newnan; two
grandchildren, on great-grandchild and a nephew. Sevices
will be Sunday, march 3, at 2 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home in
Newnan with Dr. C.A. Jernigan and the Rev. Ken Norton
officiating. Pallbearers: Charles Cooper, Jerry Gill, Chad
King, Jeff McLain, Randy McLain and Sean Rooks. 


Mrs. Dorothy H. WILLIAMS, 70, of 210 Lambert St.,
Carrollton, died Saturday, March 2, 2002. Born Feb. 23,
1922, in Carroll County to the Late Dave and Martha Jane
Word Holley. She was preceded in death by her husband Grady
Williams Sr. Survivors are her sister, Mrs. Curlie H.
Reynolds; stepson and daughter-in-law, Grady and Christa
Williams Jr.; one godchild and a host of grandchildren,
great grandchildren, nieces nephews and other relatives.
Services will be Tuesday, March 5, at 2 p.m at First Baptist
Church in Carrollton with Pastor Bradley Bell officiating.
Interment will follow in Carrollton City Cemetery.

Marion Robert REECE, age 79, of 1087, N. Van Wert Road,
Villa Rica, died Saturday, March 2, 2002. Born June 19,
1922, in Union County, Ga. to Dora Phillip reece and the
late John Franklin Reece. HE WAS A WORLD WAR II ARMY
VETERAN, a retired tool-and-die technician from Lockheed
Martin Company and was Church of God by Faith. Besides his
father, he was preceded in death by one son Johnny Reece.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Woodall Reece of Villa
Rica; mother Dora Phillips Reece of Blairsville, Ga.;
daughter, Sheila Reece of Villa Rica; son and daughter-in-
law, Jackie Reece of Holly Springs, Ga.; sister Lawanda
Spiva of Blairsville, Ga.; brother Joe Reece of Blairsville;
two grandchildren, Jason and Rani Reece of Holly Springs,
Ga. Services will be Monday, March 4, 2002 at 1 p.m. from
Hightowers' Memorial Chapel with Pastor Arthur Singleton
officiating. Interment will follow in Georgia Memorial Park.

Tuesday , March 5, 2002 Brinton SMITH SR., 80, of 31 Dover
Trail, Peachtree City, formerly of Villa Rica, died March 3,
2002. Born Oct. 8, 1921, in Carroll County, son of the late
Loyd Franklin Smith and the late Myra Taylor Smith. He lived
in all but the last six years of his life in Villa Rica when
he moved to Peachtree City. HE SERVED IN THE UNITED STATES
AIR FORCE DURING WORLD WAR II.  He was co-owner and operator
of Florence & Smith Grocery Store in Villa Rica for about 15
yrs. Then he worked for Southwire Company for 25 years as a
Payroll Supervisor. After his retirement from South wire, he
worked for several years with Southern Railway before he
settled in full retirement. He was a member of the First
United Methodist Church of Villa Rica but when he moved to
Peachtree City, he joined the First Baptist Church of
Peachtree City. He was preceded in death by his parents, and
his first wife, Ruth Johnston Florence Smith on July 8, 1995
and his brother, Robert Smith. Survivors include his wife,
Sara Conner Wright Smith of Peachtree City; one daughter and
son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles (Lynda and Chuck) Blount
III of Houston, Tx; one son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and
Mrs. Brinton  E. (Brint and Tami) Smith Jr. of Douglasville;
one step-daughter and step-son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Miles
(Karen) Williams of  Suwanee; one step-son and step-
daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth (Donna) Wright of
Fayetteville; grandchildren, Charles Bryan Blount IV of
Owensboro, Ky., Tonya Michelle Rawley of Houston, Tx.,
Brinton E. (Trey) Smith III and Amanda B. Smith, both of
Douglasville; step-grandchildren, Katie, Aaron, and Nathan
Williams all fo Suwannee and Natalie and Richard Wright,
both of Fayetteville; and five great-grandchildren, Taylor,
and Parker Rawley and Josua, Will and Davis Blount. Services
will be Wednesday, March 6 at 2 p.m. at the First United
Methodist Church of Villa Rica with Dr. Harold Allen, Rev.
Terry Phillips and Rev. Gary Cole officiating. Pallbearers:

Willis and Tim Burnsed. Interment will follow in Hillcrest
Cemetery in Villa Rica.

M. Dwayne LEATHERWOOD, 45, of 2485 Pleasant Ridge Road,
Bremen, passed away Monday, March 4, 2002 at Emory
University Hospital. Born Nov. 1, 1956 in Carroll County,
son of the late I.V. Leatherwood and Pauline Carter
Leatherwood. He was the Deli Manager at Kroger and was a
Baptist. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by
two sisters, Christine Pettitt and Annie Ruth Thaxton; and
two brothers, L.C. Leatherwood and Warner Leatherwood.
Surviviers include his wife, Linda Hutchens Leatherwood of
Bremen; one son M. Chad Leatherwood of Carrollton; one
daughter and son-in-law, Kate Marie and Brandon Fehring of
Carrollton; one step-daughter and son-in-law, Valerie and
Kent Buchanan of Whitesburg; four sisters and brothers-in-
law, N. Joyce and Charles Daugherty of Villa Rica, Mary Ann
and Darrell Strickland of Douglasville, Lee and Fred Kent of
Carrollton and Sara Carroll of Dallas; one brother and
sister-in-law, Preston and Valerie Letherwood of
Douglasville; four grandchildren, Layne Hunter and Haley
Nicole  Fehring, and Samuel Richard and Colt Lane Buchanan,

Betty Jane Cohran HEAD, 70 of Douglasville, died Sunday,
March 3, 2002. Born March 18, 1932, in Paulding County,
daughter of the late James Chester and Lena Mae Cohran. She
had been employed by Peco Co. Survivors include a daughter
Denese Moore of Franklin; sons, Gary Head of Villa Rica and
Kenny Head of Winston; sister Allie Rice of Lithia Springs;
brothers, George Cohran of Villa Rica and Hugh Cohran of
Lithia Springs; 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Services will be held March 5, 2002 at 2 p.m. at the
Hightwower's Memorial Chapel in Douglasville with Rev. James
Green and Rev. Terry Marbut officiating. Interment will
follow in Rosehaven Cemetery.


Olive S. POPE, 85 of M. Sanders Road, Buchanan, died March
3, 2002. Born April 10, 1916, in Haralson Co. daughter of
the late Ambrose Sanders and Myrtle William Sanders. She was
a retired seamstress for the arrow Co. and a member of Mt.
Vernon Baptist Church. Besides her parents, she was preceded
in death by her husband, Harris L. Pope; two daughters
Jackie Hightower and  Vila Eaves and a son. Davey Pope.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Lynn and Gail
Pope of Buchanan; daughter-in-law, Faye Pope of Buchanan;
sons-in-law, Jerry Eavers of Mableton and Richard Hightower
of Bremen; one sister Mary Fay Smith of Villa Rica; eight
grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces
and nephews. Services were March 4, at 2 p.m. from the
chapel of Hightower Funeral Home in Bremen with Rev. Wayne
Morris, Rev. J. D. Bryant and rev. Allen Wilburn

Chad Pope, Jason Pope, Rodney Pope, Todd Pope, Tim Price,
and Edward Wade. Interement: Mt Vernon Baptist Church

Robert Preston TEAGUE, 84 of Clear Springs Drive, Claremont,
N.C., formerly of Cartersville, died March 4, 2002. Born
Oct. 18, 1917, in DeKalb County, Ala., son of the Late Lum
Teague and Luella Hudson Teague. He retired for Sewell
Manufacturing Co. and WAS A VETERAN OF THE UNITED STATES
ARMY. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his
wife  Lena Teague in 1999; daughter, Evielon Teague; son
Robert Stanley Teague; brother, Sam Teague; five infant
brothers; sisters, Willie Teague, Nora Bates, Addie Beeam
and an infant sister; on step-son, Donald Eskew. Survivors
include a daughter, Wanda Stewart of Claremont, N.C.; son
David Jarold Rogers Teague of Catawba;, N.C.; step-daughter,
Annette Keever of Cartersville; two step-sons, Glenn Eskew
of Temple and Alfred Eskew of Cartersville; three
grandchildren; one great-grandson and 10 step-grandchildren.
Services will be Wednesday, March 6 at 1 p.m. from the
chapel of Hightower Funeral Home in Bremen with Elder
Charles Portridge, Rev. Van White and Elder Max Kimball
officiating. Pallbearers will be Brian Bass, Stephen Stoker,
Eddie Teague, Josh Teague, Eddie Bivins, Randy Bivins,
Kenneth Eskew and Shannon Eskew. A military graveside
service will follow in Meadowbrook Memory Gardens. 


Ukle Ruall TYREE, 74, of 3815 Carrollton-Tyus road,
Carrollton, died March 4, 2002. Born  Sept. 27, 1927, in
Carroll County, son of the late Tamp V. Tyree and Minnie Lee
Knight Tyree. He was employed with AT&T and a member of
Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Survivors include a brother,
Billy Tyree of Bowdon. Services ill be March 5, at 2 p.m. at
the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Hubert Blackmon
and Rev. Monroe Wiggins officiating. Pallbearers: Lynn
Joyner, Winford Cates, Larry Land and Donnie Sullivan.

William Troy BLEDSOE, 73 of Franklin, died March 5, 2002.
Born Aug. 12, 1928, in Carroll County, son of the late
William Carl Bledsoe and Pearlie Estell Hammond Bledsoe. HE
WAS A VETRAN IN THE U.S. ARMY, SERVICN IN THE JAPANESE
TBEATER WHER HE EARNED THE ARMY OCCUPATION MEDAL AND THE
WORKD WAR II VICTORY MEDAL. He was a Baptist. Survivors
include his wife Nellie Jo Bledsoe of Centralhapchee;
daughter and son-in-law, deborah and David Parks of Ephesus;
three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; brother,
Carl "Junior" Bledsole of Centralhatchee. Services will be
March 7, at Tom Stutts Funeral Home Chapel. Burial:
Centralhatchee Baptist Church cemetery.

Eddie Lee HEGGS JR., 87, of 708 Alabama St., Carrollton,
died March 1, 2002. Born June 15, 1914, in Louisville, son
of the late Eddie Lee Sr. and Elizabeth Heggs. Besides his
parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Corine
Strickland Heggs, and four brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include his sister, Sallie Brown; daughters,
Katherine of Florida and Delois of Carrollton; 9
grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, one great-great-
grandchild and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Services
will be March 6 at west Georgia Church of Christ in
Carrollton with Minister Larry Acuff officiating. Burial;

Catherine `Kate` Elizabeth Willoughby HENSLEE, 96, of Villa
Rica, died March 5, 2002. Born May 3, 1905, in Douglas
County, daughter of the late Alonzo Willoughby and the late
Mrs. Ora Baker Willoughby. She was a member of Ephesus
Baptist Church and a retired seamstress. She was preceded in
death by her Husband Tee Henslee; daughter, Cora Estelle
Johnston; sons,  Herbert, Lawrence and Ray Willoughby;
brothers and sisters, Claude, William, and Warren
Willoughby,  Bernice, Ruth, Louis, Kinnie, and Ora Christine
Willoughby. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law,
Larry Robbie and Bessie Henslee of Douglasville; 10
grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great-
grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Services will
be Friday, March 8, at 2 p.m. at  Douglas Chapel of Jones-
Wynn Funeral Home with Rev. Billy Godwin officiating.

Alonzo LUKE JR., 65, of 247 Mt. Zion St., Bremen, died March
2, 2002. Born May 21, 1936, son of the later Alonzo Sr. and
Fannie Mae Luke. Besides his parents, he was preceded in
death by a daughter Louise Luke; step-son, Ricky taylor;
sisters, Airlee Wynn, Minnie (Robert) Owensby, Cottie Luke,
Carrie Cokley; brothers, Floyd, Lloyd, and Alfred Luke.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Martha Luke; daughter,
Shemika Ann Luke; step-children, Chris, Marcus, Rhonda
Traylor, Veronica Wynn, Frances Peenson, tommy allen and
John Hindsman; sisters and brothers-in-law, Rosie (Odell)
Orr of Tallapoosa, Lois (Jimmy) Elder and Inez Maine, all of
Buchanan; 15 grandchildren and several othe relatives.
Services will be March, at 1 p.m. at Mt. Newly Baptist
Church in Tallapoosa with Supt. Noah Rosser officiating.

Jerry Max TWISDALE, 68, of 16 Hickory Court, Carrollton,
died March 4, 2002. Born Sept. 30,  1933, in Oxford, Ala.,
son of the late thomas Twisdell and Elberta Burgess
Twisdell. HE WAS A U.S. NAVY VETERAN HAVING SERVED IN THE
KOREAN CONFLICT.  He was a retired truck driver and was a
Baptist. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by
his brothers, William, John, Lewis and Jack Twisdele.

Velma H. OLIVER, 75, of East Allison Circle, Carrollton,
passed away early Wednesday, March 6, 2002 at her residence.
Born Nov. 7, 1926 in Oklahoma, daughters of the late Nolen
T. and Helen Harris. She was associated with Barnes Freight
Lines for 32 yrs. and then with The Sony Co. for 11 years
and a member of the Bethesda Baptist Church. Besides her
parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Matthew,
Forrest, N.E., A. T., and Fonso Harris. Survivors include
her husband, Robert F. "Bob" Oliver; her sons and daughters-

passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2002 at Tanner Medical
Center in Carrollton, following an extended illness.Born
Sept 28, 1950 in Atlanta, daughter of the late Thomas Travis
Gibson and Mrs. Girleene Rachels Barnes. She was a member of
Arise Community Church in Waco., Ga. Survivers include her
husband, Ronald Arrington of Carrollton; two daughters and
sons-in-law, Heather and Jason Marcum and Misty and Wayne
Chapman, both of Carrollton; her mother Girleene Rachels

SATURDAY, March 9, 2002 DR. JIM MATHIS Dr. Jim Mathis, 43,
of Douglasville died Thursday, March 7, 2002. Born April 6,
1958, in Maryland, son of the late Thomas Earl and Emma
Pearl Mathis. He was professor and department chair of
biology department at the State University of West Georgia.
He held a master's and PhD from North Carolina State
University and a B.S. from the University of Maryland. He
was a member of New Covenant United Methodist Church. His
car was hit by Waco resident Betty Chambers, 23, he died at
the scene. Ms. Chambers was taken by helicopter from Tanner
to Atlanta Medical Center where she is in serious condition.
There doesn`t appear to be a reason for the accident, she
crossed the center line. There doesn't appear to be a
medical condition that would be a factor. Alcohol, drugs and
speed were not factors in this collision. The  2001 Dodge
Neon is to be check for possible distractions, such as a
cell phone. She was heading westbound on the Carrollton
Bypass between Maple Street and Hay`s Mill Road on her way
home from Carrollton Academy at the time of the 6:47 p.m.
crash. Mathis, also on his way home from work, was heading
eastbound on the two-lane stretch of road. He was driving a
1996 Geo Prism. Police officers found his watch beside his
car, the time stopped at the moment of impact. He is
survived by his wife, Rebecca Mathis of Douglaville;
daughter, Sarah Mathis of Douglasville; brothers, buddy
Mathis of Denton, Md., Terry Mathis of Winton, Va., and
Frank Mathis of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; sister Betty Dean of
Rockville, Md.; several nieces and nephews. Services:

Rickey CRAVEN, 43, of Altoona, Ala., died March 1, 2002.
Born Sept. E, 1958, in Carroll County, son of the late Alven
G. Craven and Mildred Roberts Craven of Carrollton. Besides

Bradley on Feb. 26, 2001. Survivors include his wife, Tammy

Jason Rockford `Rocky` STONE, 21, of Douglasville died March
6, 2002.  He was an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of
America, a 1998 Graduate of Alexander High School and
attended Clayton State College. He received his airline
transport rating from airline Transportation Professionals,
a customer service agent with Delta Airlines and while on
leave was a flight instructor at West Georgia Regional
Airport in Carrollton and was a pilot with Aerial Messages
Inc. in Daytona Beach, Fla. Survivors include his father,
Daniel L. Stone of Kingston, Jamaica; mother Darlene S.
Stone of Douglasville; paternal grandparents, Seaborn and
Carolyn Stone of Fairburn; maternal grandparents, Edith

Mrs. Frances Withrow WEIR, 89, of Ellijay died Saturday,
March 9, 2002. Born March 6, 1913, daughter of the late John
Jackson and Emma Plemmon Withrow. She was a graduated of the
University of Georgia with a degree in education.  She
taught school in the Carrollton City School system until her
retirement. She taught school for 38 years. She is survived
by her husband, Robert Denton Weir; sisters Mary K. Withrow
of Ellijay, Ruby Withrow Graham of Atlanta,  Merle Withrow
Bailey of Smyrna and Collene Withrow Gutherue if Atlanta;

Dorsey Charlie YARBOROUGH, 88, of Roanoke, Ala., died
Saturday, March 9, 2002. Born May 1, 1913, son of Will H.
and Ida T. Smith Yarborough. He had been a resident of
Roanoke since 1946. HE WAS A WORLD WAR II ARMY VETERAN and a
member of Roanoke Christian Church and was owner-operator of
a dry cleaning business. He is survived by his wife, Nonnie
Ruth Shaw Yarborough of roanoak; daughters, Cupidene Bailey
of Roanoke and Hildreth Dunson Schwiening of Opelika, AL.;
son, Tommy Yarborough of Roanoke; sister, Bernice Yates of

Church and worked at Horton's Book Store for over 20 years
as a clerk before her retirement. Survivors include

Mae Chandler FULLER, 86, of Douglasville, died March 9, 2002
at Wellstar Douglas Hospital following a brief illness. Born
May 7, 1915 in Paulding County, the daughter of the late
Albert Eugene Chandler and the late Mrs. Ada Vaughan
Chandler. She was a Baptist, a seamstress and a homemaker.
She was also a former pianist for local churches and radio
stations. 


Lester ROBERTS, 79, of Branan Towers, Atlanta, formerly of
Carrollton, died March 7, 2002 at his residence. Born Feb,
20, 1923, in Carroll County, son of the late Rev. W. E.
Roberts and the late Cleola Hayes Roberts. Besides his
parents he was preceded in death by an infant son; one
brother, Clifford Elmer Roberts; a son-in-law; one step-

Charlie E. AKERS, 77, of Flat Rock Road, Villa Rica, died

Denver GASTON, 85, of 128 Janice Place, Carrollton, died at
his home Tuesday morning, March 12, 2002 after a bought with
Vascular Disease. Born June 23, 1916, in Carrollton son of
the late Pear King Gaston and James Henry Gaston; grand son
of the late Eula Flemming Gaston and the late James
Lafayette Gaston. He was a life long resident of
Carrollton,. He attended Carrollton A & M which is now the
State University of West Georgia. From 1932 to 1933 he
worked for the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp) where he
worked on roads and with the forestry crew. He attended
Monroe A&M, a Georgia Vocational and Technical School in
Monroe for the next four years, Lettering two years in
Football, and four years in basketball. He was on the 1926
Big 8 Basketball Championship team. He Went to Clemson
University to try out for the football team, receiving a
scholarship and lettering in football two years. He also
attended Woodrow Wilson Law School in Atlanta and on leave
from the Georgia State Patrol for THREE YEARS DURING WORLD
WAR II SERVING IN THE NAVY AS A SHORE PATROL OFFICER FROM
NOV. 1942 UNTIL OCT. 1945. He received a Medical Discharge
from the Navy due to a broken back injury he received while
serving at the CC Camp. After returning to the Georgia State
Patrol he was stationed in Waycross, then reassigned to the
Villa Rica Post. Married in 1948 in Folkston, Georgia  to
Connie Wolfe of Waycross. Resigning from the State patrol in
1949, he ran for sheriff where her served Carroll County
until 1953. In 1955 he and his family went to Washington,
D.C. where he underwent FBI training, returning to
Carrollton to become a part of the Georgia branch of the
FBI, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.  In 1972 he
survived and recovered from a aortic aneurysm, he retired
from the GBI with 37 years of law enforcement service. He
retired in 1973 at the age of 57. In 1977 he earned his real
estate licenses and sold real estate with B&B reality, 1st
Realty, and Ara Hansard, all of Carrollton. He was a member
of the First United Methodist Church in Carrollton.
Survivors include his wife Cornne Wolfe Gaston of
Carrollton; daughters and sons-in-law, Carol Gaston and Tony
Mudd of Dallas, Texas and Wren Gaston and Gerald Heavener of
Harleysville, Pa; son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Stacy
Mays Gaston of Carrollton; grandchildren, John, James Joseph
and Amanda Catron Mudd, Jennifer and Christopher Heavener,

Robert K. WALDROP JR., 66, of Lafayette died March 13, 2002.
Mr. Waldrop was a graduate of the University of Georgia.

Charie E. AKERS, 77, of Flat rock Road, Villa Rica, died
Thursday, March 14, 2002. Born Jan. 12, 1925, in Carroll
County son of the late Rev. Amos N. Akers and Minnie Pearl
McCarty Akers. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church
and SERVED IN THE U.S. NAVY. He was employed with Overnite
Transportation for 34 years as a driver and retired in 1987
with out an accident. He was awarded the State of Georgia
driver of the year in 1984. He held the Charlie Akers
Barbeque for 30 years for his friends and family, and cooked
for fund raisers for FOP, churches and Boy Scout Troops.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Boyd Akers of Villa Rica;
sons and daughters-in-law, Danny and Jennifer Akers of Villa
Rica, Dean and Kathy Akers of Carrollton, Allen and Shelly
Akers of Valdosta, Amy and James McColley of Temple; great

Joseph Wiley GAMMON, 67, of 407 Adamson Avenue, Carrollton,
died Friday, March 15, 2002. Borm June 19, 1934, in Carroll
County, son of the late Millare Jackson Gammon and Florise
Brock Gammon. He was a security guard employed by Gold Kist
and a member of Fellowship Baptist Church. Besides his
parents, he was preceded in death by a step-son Eddie Allen.
Survivors include his wife, Mary E. Gammon of Carrollton;
children, Walter Gammon, Gail Maunihan and Bobby Buch Allen

Dr. Ila ROOKS, 81, of 1265 Brock Road, Carrollton, died
March 14, 2002. Born Oct 5, 1920, in Carroll County,
daughter of the late Thomas Floyd Rooks and Lizzie Jane
Bonner Rooks. Dr. Rooks served as assistant professor at the
University of Georgia in education and counseling for over
30 years. She also taught at R.E. Lee High School in
Thomaston. She was a graduate of Bowdon High School,  the
State University of West Georgi, and the University of
Georgia where she received he bachelor, master's and
doctorate degrees. Dr. Rooks was a member of the First
Christian Church and Delta Kappa Gamma Society
International. Survivors include a brother-in-law, Dalton
Scott of Decatur; sister-in-law, Lena McWhorter rooks of
Gainesville and 10 nieces and Nephews. Besides her parents,
she was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Buvena

James Vernon HARPER, 71, of 1588 North Van Wert Road, Villa
Rica, died Sunday morning, March 17, 2002 in Tanner Medical
Center, Villa Rica. Born Dec. 13, 1930, in Fulton County,
Georgia, son of the late Melvin Harper and the late Mary
Shirah Haper. He lived most of his life in this area and
SERVED IN THE UNITED STATES ARMY DURING THE KOREAN WAR. He
retired from Western Union where he worked for 30 years as
an equipment installer. He had been a faithful member of
Fullerville Baptist Church since 1967, attended the
auditorium Sunday School class and served as an usher for
many years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in
death by three brothers, Verlon Harper, his twin brother,
Charles Harper and Gerald Harper. Survivors include his wife
of 47 years, Opal Blair Harper of Villa Rica; one son and
daughter-in-law, Wayne and Susan Blair of Lithia Springs;
two grandsons, Seth Blair and austin Blair, both of Lithia

Howard Harold HUDDLESTON, 78, of Carrollton, died Sunday,
March 17, 2002 at Emory Dunwoody Medical Center. Born May
18, 1923, in Carroll County, son of the late Adam Huddleston
and Olivia Huddleston Stogner. HE WAS A U.S. ARMY VETERAN
HAVING SERVED IN WORLD WAR II, a founding member of the
Carroll County cattleman's Association, a past board member
of Carroll County Farm Bureau and a member of Eureka Baptist
church for over 40 years. Besides his parents, he was
preceded in death by three brothers, Reuben Huddleston, J.B.
Huddleston and Jerry Stogner; and on sister Christine
Huddleston Allen. Survivors include his wife Willene
Huddleston of Carrollton; four children, Sharon and Fred
Sparks and Larry and Renea Huddleston all of Carrollton,
Judy and Ike Green of Whitesburg and Chris and Brandi

area and was a retired farmer. He was preceded in death by

2002. Mrs. Wigley moved from Carrollton to Powder Springs
six years ago. She had been a cashier at Morris Cleaners and
retired from Coit Draper Cleaners in Buckhead. She was a
member of Shady Grove Baptist Church, where she served as
Sunday School teacher and was active in the Women's
Missionary Union. She attended the Carroll County Senior

Doris Nelson TRINKNER, 82, of Georgetown, Tenn., formerly of
Carrollton, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002. Mrs. Trinkner
served as a business manager for her husband's dental
practice in Carrollton, for many years before their

Adventist Church. The daughter of the late Hollis and Gladys

She was a retired meat packer for Wilson's Foods. Inc.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, Harry Alfonzo Farmer; grand mother, Ellen Harper;
sisters, Christine Smith; two sons, Raymond Alfonzo Farmer
and James Norman Farmer, a grandson, Jamie Farmer and a
great-grandson, Benjamin Clay Wakefield. Survivors include

Mrs. Eva Daniel CRIBB, 79, of Dallas, formerly of
Carrollton, died Friday, March 22, 2002.  Born Aug. 5, 1922,
in Meriwether County, daughter of the late Starks Ellis
Daniel and the late Nell Denny Daniel. She lived in
Carrollton from 1977 until moving to Dallas in 1997. She was
a member of the Baptist church. Besides her parents, her
husband Leon P. Cribb preceded her in death. Survivers
include her daughter, Jackie Villani of Dallas; son, Ron
Neightbors of San Francisco, Calif.; sisters, Mrs. Helen
Massey of Loan Oak and Mrs. Myra Nell Wofford of Covington;

Melvin Audell HUFF, 84, of Dallas Road, Villa Rica, died on
March 25, 2002, at Tanner Medical Center in Villa Rica. Born
Feb. 17, 1918, in Temple, son of the late Henry Huff and the
late Mrs. Cleo Texas Hall Huff. He was a lifelong resident
of Villa Rica. On April 5, 2002, he would have been married
to Mrs. Sally Hicks Huff for 61 years. He retired from
Lockheed, where he work for 32 years. He a member of the
American Legion and head of the Villa Rica Civil Defense for
several years. He was a member of Philadelphia Baptist
Church, where he served as enrollment director. MR. HUFF
ACTIVELY SERVED IN WORLD WAR II, IN THE U.S. ARMY In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one
daughter, Debbie Huff and one sister, Clara Webb. Survivors
include his wife Mrs. Sally Fay Hicks Huff of Villa Rica;
one son and daughter-in-law, Derrell and Laney Huff of

work for Winn Dixie for 15 years, with at least 10 years in
the bakery dept. as a cake decorator at Winn Dixie in

March 28, 2002. Born Jan, 20, 1920, in Rockmart, Paulding
Co., Ga. son of the late Noble Brown and the late Mrs.
Frances Brown. He started the furniture business with
Groover-Smith Furniture in Villa Rica, the later owned
Brown's Furniture for more than 40 years. He later worked
and retired from Home Depot in Douglasville. MR. BROWN
SURVED DURING WORLD WAR II IN THE U.S. ARMY. He served on
the Villa Rica Gass Board and the Villa Rica Civil Devence,
and was a firefither for the Villa Rica Volunteer Fire Dept.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Villa Rica and
the Berean Sunday School Class. In addition to his parents,
he was preceded in death by his brother, Hoyt Brown. He is
survived by his wife, Bill Bowen Brown of Villa Rica;
daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Jessie Leslie of
Douglasville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Doris and Clovis

Ellis Lester LAMB, 73, of 1130 Cedar St., Carrollton, died
March 27, 2002. Born Aug. 22, 1928, in Madison, Fla., son of
the late Charles and Esta Draper Lamb. He graduated from the
University of Florida with a bachelor of science degree in
agriculture. HE WAS A VETERAN OF THE U.S. ARMY AND SERVED IN
THE KOREAN CONFLICT AS A 1ST  LIEUTENANT IN THE 57TH
DIVISION AT FORT BENNING. He farmed for 20 yrs. In Palm
Beach Co., Fla., was self-employed at City Feed and Lawn
Service in Kingsport, Tenn., and later retired from Clemons
Cab and Limo Service of Kingsport, Tenn. Mr. Lamb was a
member of First Church of God of Kingsport and sang in the
church choir for 10 years. Survivors include his wife,
Margaret Ann "Peggy" Lamb; daughter, Sheila Ann Smith of
Rowlett, Tex.; sister, Margorie Bynum of Lantana, Fl.

Mrs. Curtis Elizabeth JOHNSON, 80, of Graham, Ala., died
March 28, 2002. Born Sept. 3, 1921, in Randolph Co., Ala.,
she was the daughter of Steven W. and Nancy M. Traylor
Herren. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and had
been employed with Sun Trust Bank. She was preceded in death
by her husband, Fred Johnson; brothers Horace Herren and S.
T. "Bud" Herren; sisters Myrtice Green, Nancy Williams,
Janie Hilton and Ilene Lovvorn. Survivors include her son,
David Johnson of Wedowee, Ala.; two grandsons; sister,
Jewell Mote of Woodland, Ala.; and a brother Willis Herren
of Woodland. Services: Saturday, March 30, at 1 p.m., Shiloh
Baptist Church, Rev. Tony Moris, Gary Henderson, and Paul
Wilder officiating. Burial: Herren's Grove Baptist Church.

Mary Cunningham POLIVKA, 81, of 116 Brock St., Carrollton,
died March 29, 2002. Born March 16, 1921, in Carroll County,
daughter of the late Wm. Douglas and Myrtice Raiden
Cummingham. She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Greg
Hendrix of Buchanan; son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy  and
Linda Polivka of Pueblo, Col.; daughter-in-law, Kim
Huddleston of Carrollton; brother, Chuck Cunningham of
Atlanta; 3 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and several
nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in
death by her husband, Joseph J. Polivka; sister, Jewel
Causey and brother, Howard Cunningham and Bill Cunningham.
Graveside services: Saturday, March 30, at 11 a.m.,
Carrollton City Cemetery, Rev. Keith Hancock officiating.
Burial: Carrollton City Cemetery. Almon Funeral Home,
Carrollton.

Robert Ray `Bob` ROGERS of Marchman Street, Bremen, died
March 28, 2002. Born July 28, 1932, in Chatham County, son
of the late Joseph Harvey Rogers and Margie Jones Rogers
Walls. He was an employee of the U.C. Can Co. and WAS A
VETERAN OF THE U.S. AIR FORCE HAVING SERVED IN THE KOREN
CONFLICT. Survivors include his daughters, Tina Rogers of
Birmingham, Ala., Crystal Brown of Fitzgerald; sons, Robert
Ray Rogers Jr. of Duluth, Paul Rogers of Ocilla and Stephen
rogers of Fitzgerald; a brother, Donnie Rogers of Bremen,
and 8 grandchildren. Services: Saturday, March 30, at 11
a.m., Hightower Funeral Home chapel, Bremen, Rev. Ed
Wadsworth officiating. Pallbearers: Joe Jones, Ray Jones,
Harry Jones, Jimmy Thomas, Ronnie Thomas and Mike Barron.

James Hubert Rainey of Highway 27 North, Bremen, died March
28, 2002. Born Sept. 11, 1917, in Haralson Co., son of the
late Geo. Thomas Rainey and Maybelle Wright Rainey. He was a
retired supervisor with the Sewell Mfg. Co. with 40 years of
service. He was a member of Bethel Bapist Church and AN ARMY
VETERAN OF WORLD WAR II. Survivors include his  wife, Louise
Davis Rainey of Bremen; daughter and son-in-law, Jean Rainey
Self and Sam Self of Port Wentworth, Ga.; 3 grandchildren,
Delaurie Self and Jim and Leigh Stone of Bremen; 5 great-
grandchildren, Scottie Self of Bremen, Ashley Reid of
Bremen, Waylon Stone of Dallas and Bubba and Loren Stone of
Bremen. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Scott Self.
Services, Saturday, March 30, at 2 p.m., Bethel Baptist
Church, Rev. Sam Self, Rev. Chris Cook and Rev. Geo. Bennet

Boyd E. CROSTHWAIT of Keene Road, Bremen, passed away
Friday, March 29, 2002. Born Dec, 5, 1912, in Woodland,
Mississippi, son of the late James Crostwait and Mattye Hill
Crostwait. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Connell
Crosthwait of Bremen; daughter and son-in-law, Joy and Joe
Jones of Bremen; grandchildren, Lyndsay Jones and Gordon
Jones of Bremen; sister, Mrs. Madlyn Smith of Brooksville,
Fl., and a brother Ed. Crosthwait of Menphis, Tenn.
Services: Sunday, March 31, at 2 p.m., Hightower Funeral

John Edward SMITH of Pacific Avenue, Bremen, passed away
suddenly Friday, March 29, 2002, from injuries received in
an automobile accident. Born April 18, 1963, in Muscogee
Co., son of the late Hardy Smith and Ruth Pitts Smith. He
was an employee of Lee Bowman Construction Co. Survivors
include his daughters, Andrea and Cynthia Smith of Bremen:
sons, Nicholas and Cody Smith, both of Bremen; sisters,
Marie Brock and Mary Rooks of Temple; brothers, David Smith
of Bremen and Jimmy Smith of Franklin; and a grandson Jacob
McDaniel of Bremen. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his
parents and a brother, Jerry Smith. Services: Monday, April
1, at 4 p.m. Hightower Funeral Home chapel, Rev. Homer
Wilburn officiating. Pallbearers Matthew Richardson, Gary
Stewart, Eddie Cook, Alvie Morton, Nick Smith and Anthony

Carolyn R. MILLER, 80, of Tallapoosa, died Friday, March 29,
2002.  Born  Nov. 5, 1921, in Cleburne Co., Ala. The family
will receive friends on Sunday, March 31. Fro 5-9 p.m. at
Miller Funeral Home in Tallapoosa. The body will lie in
state from 1-2 p.m. at Tallapoosa First Baptist Church on
Monday, April 1, with funeral services to begin at 2 p.m.
Burial: Hollywood Cemetery.
