Cool Spring Church and Cemetery #14 From the Candler County Court House take Hwy 46 East for two blocks. Turn right onto Hwy 121 and take the West -bound ramp on I-16. Travel 5.4 miles to Exit #98, turn left on Hwy 57 and go .4 miles, turn right on to Cool Spring Church Road and continue for 2.3 miles, turn left on Paul Williams Road, then immediately left on to Edenfield Road. Cool Spring Church will be on the right and the cemetery on the left. Established by 18 people (including one slave) on February 27, 1853, Cool Spring Missionary Baptist Church was not originally located at its present site. In 1883, lands, which included the original "Griffin Graveyard," donated by Zoah Turner and Thomas W. Griffin allowed for the creation of the current church and cemetery. However, these gifts were not recorded until the 8th and 9th of July, 1913, when the Church and lands were still part of Emanuel County. The cemetery contains many old graves, some of which are damaged due to the passage of time, erosion, and other factors. Throughout the older poprtion of the cemetery, many "fat-lighter" stobs may be seen. These stobs are the remainder of wooden grave markers that once filled sections of the the cemetery. Erosion, vandalism, and personal error have led to the disappearance and destuction of many of these markers. The unidentified buried here included former slaves and freed blacks; however, as many of these markers are completely missing, it leaves those graves not only unidentified, but unmarked as well.
