Georgia Murderers, Murders and Murder Victims 1823-1840

Since the late Colonial period, Georgia Governors
have issued proclamations that offered rewards for
the capture of fleeing criminals, usually murderers.

These can be found at the Georgia Dept. of Archives
and History. Microfilm Reel 40-41

1. Nathan D. BARR and James JOURDAN were found
guilty of murdering James M. DYE in Burke County
during the May Term. of 1823.    Issued 12 Dec. 1823

2. William Pulaski, Edward Pulaski, and Thomas
Pulaski are wanted for Arson and attempted Murder   
against WILLIAM HENDERSON of Putnam County. Note
that William PULASKI has been sentenced in the
Jackson County Court, Sept. Term 1822, to 10 years
in the penitentiary for rape. Pulaski is 27 years
old. 5 ft. 7 1/2 inches tall, dark complexion, black
eyes and hair, heavy eyebrows, and large whiskers.
Issued 13 September 1823.

3. On the 18th of  Sept. 1823, LUKE HADDOCK was
murdered by Martin B. ROUSE and Joseph B. BRYAN of
Pulaski County. ROUSE has been jailed but BRYAN had
fled justice.   Issued 24  September 1823

4. On the 12th July, JEREMIAH W. RAY of Twiggs
County murdered JAMES SLONE. RAY is about 40 years
old, black hair and eyes, large black whiskers round
shouldered, "quite talkative something of a whining
tone" and has a remarkable scare on his throat.
Issued 13 July 1824. 

5. One the 3rd July, MARK COMBS of Baldwin County
murdered ALFORD MCCRARY. COMBS is 5ft. 8-10 inches
tall, black hair, and is about 21-22 years of age.
Issued 5 July 1824. 


6. In October, WILLIAM BARBER and Elijah BARBER
committed "an act of lawless outrage and violence"
on the body of D. O. KELLY of Gwinnett County.
Issued 2 December 1824. 

7.  On the 17th, PETER A. EARLY murdered ZACHARIAH
HARLIN of Greene County.   Issued December   1824.

8. On 15 Dec. last,  LITTLEBERRY BRADLEY of
Wilkenson County raped Rachel E. STARTRY.   Issued
10 Jan. 1825

9. On 18 December last, Richard H. WATSON was
murdered by William CLARK, in the house of Alexander
GODDIN in Decatur County. Issued 27 January 1825. 

10. On the 2nd day of the present month, John W.
Davis murdered John B. NELSON of Dekalb County .
Davis is over 50 years of age, 5ft. 6 or 7 inches
tall, stout, round faced, swarthy complexion, dark
hair, a little gray with some balding, and a shaking
of his limbs at times as if affected by palsy Issued
8 April 1825. 

11. Josiah THOMPSON of Bibb County murdered a Negro
man named Ben on the 5th of August 1825.   Issued 12
August 1825. 

12. On the 12th, William CURETON of Hancock County
murdered John PULLEN of Hancock County Issued 18
August 1825. Cureton is about 20 or 22 years of age,
5ft 8-10 inched tall, ordinary stature, full eyes
and face, dark complexion, and a down cast look. 

13. On the 2nd , Michael Whatley of Morgan County
murdered Orin H. Youngblood of said County, Issued
in 1825. Whatley is about 33-34 years old, 5 ft. 10-
11 inches tall, straight, light red complexion, blue
eyes, and lisps a little, occasionally when
speaking. 

14. On July 1822, Joseph G. JENKINS murdered Daniel
STAMPER on Appling County. Jenkins was convicted by
a jury in said county, June term, 1825. Issued 22
September 1825. 

15. Mathew COLSON, while being held at the jail in
Jacksonboro, Screven County, under a charge of
murdering William FLAKE, escaped on the 20th of last
month. Issued 1 June 1825. Colson is 6 ft. tall, raw
boned, lt. brown hair, gray eyes, fresh complexion,
about 35 years of age, and a down cast look. He will
probably head for Florida or the western states. 

16. On the 27th ulto, David LANIER escaped from the
Gwinnett County jail, where he was being held for
the murder of George W. Cooper, December last. Two
other men escaped, charged with horse stealing. One
was calling himself Henry Moffett, then again,
Hunter maybe of the Chereokee nation. The other is
generally known as William G. Barkley, although
sometimes he calls himsef Young or John M. Wilde.
Issued 6 February 1826. Lanier is above ordinary in
size, little dark complexion, has a down look, a
hesitant speech, his upper teeth before are large,
one of his arms is crooked from having been broken,
had age, and is fond of spirituous liquors. Henry
Moffett is ordinary size, well built, his eyes
inclined to red, fair complexion, light hair, fair
complexion, has a good countenance, is 25 or 26
years old, and "is well calculates to deceive
strangers." 


17. In the 17th February ulto, Joseph CULVER of
Hancock County murdered Groves Colbert. Issued 4
March 1826. Culver is 6 ft. tall, dark complexion,
black hair and eyes, a flesh mole on his right
cheek, a little round shouldered, and about 35 years
old. 

18. John Farrar and William Johnston, who were
charged with the murder of Robert Willis sometime in
March last, have made their escape from the jail in
Jasper County. Issued 8 June 1826. 

19. On the 1st July instant, Henry R. Rogers of
Baldwin County critically stabbed Reuben Brandford
Goodwin. issued 3 July 1826. Henry R. Rogers is
about 25 years of age, tall and well made, dark
hair, blue eyes, active and strong, and represented
as being very quarrelsome. 

20. On 24 June lat, William Robertson of Jasper
County was murdered by Edmund Wamack and John Wamack
of Newton County. Issued 6 July 1826. 


21. On the 6th instant, an inquest by the Coroner
and his Jury in Baldwin County revealed that REUBEN
BRADFORD GOODWIN was murdered by HENRY B. ROGERS.
Issued 17  July 1826.

22. On June 9th last, Joseph THOMPSON Jr. of Morgan
County murdered a Negro woman. Issued 25 July 1826.

23. James MORRIS of Monroe County murdered a Nergo
woman belonging to John R. Cargile in Butts County. 
Issued 23 Sept. 1826.

24. Ebenezer Z. Duffy and Benjamin Downing of Jones
County murdered two Negro slaves, Jane and Moses,
beloning to Ebenerzer Duffy.  Downing has been
arrested but Duffy has Fled. Issued 25 September
1826.

25. Gabriel T. Gunn was murdered by Robert Thompson
of Morgan County. Issued 14 October 1826. Thompson
is stout made, corpulent, has light hair, blue eyes,
5 ft. 10 or 11 inches tall, and 30 years old.

26. On 16 October last, Samuel Stephens of Twiggs
County stabbed Jacob Gilder to death.  Issued 11
November 1826.

27. On the 13th instant, Martial Means escaped from
the Morgan County jail after being found guilty of
murdering THOMAS BEWS of Morgan County. Issued 20
October 1827. Means is of small stature, has sandy
hair, blue eyes, fair skin, and is inclined to be
stoop shouldered.

28. On the evening of the 11th instant, a Negro girl
named rachael was murdered by SUSAU W. KING, a
middle sized woman of fair complexion, in Warren
County. She fled with a child, three or four weeks
old. No mention of Kidnapping.  Issued 28 December
1827.

29. Thomas Burgess murdered Champion Terry in Jasper
County. Issued 15 January 1828.

30. On the morning of November 16 last, Eli B.
Thomas and Jesse Thomas of Dekalb County, assaulted
Thomas Hewitt with intent to kill.  Issued 7
February 1828.

31. On the 24th instant, William D. Coley was
murdered by Lemuel McMichael in Crawford County.
Issued 30 December 1828.  McMichael is 30 or 32
years of age, 6 ft. 1 or 2 inches high,dark
complexion, light hair, and thin visage.

32.  On the evening of 6 December last, James Y.
Long was murdered in Carroll County by James May
with the help of George May and Solomon Jackson.
Issued 6 January 1829.

33. On November 25 last, a Negro man named Harry,
Property of William D. Lucas, was Murdered in
Muscogee County by Joseph Scott.  Issued 16 January
1829.

34. On the 21st ulto. John MCDONALD, John STAFFORD,
George STAFFORD, and James STAFFORD, charged with
the murder of an indian named bill in Ware County
and robbing his Camp, escaped from the Camden County
jail.  Issued 12 February 1829.

35. On the evening of 16 February last, JETHRO
JACKSON was murdered by Phillip Hatton, in Upson
County.  Issued 16 March 1829.

36. A Negro man names JESSE, Property of Daniel
ADKINS, was killed by Edward T. PINSON in Warren
County. Issued 18 May 1829.  Pinson is 35 or 40
years old, 5 ft. 9 inches tall, dark complexion,
blind in left eye, and slow of speech.

37. On February 14, Gresham Stewart was murdered in
Newton County by William Smith, William G. Wallace,
and Richard Smith of Jasper County. Richard Smith
and William G. Wallace have been arrested but
William Smith has fled justice. Issued 15 June 1820.
William Smith is about 24 years old, 6 ft. high,
fair complexion, light hair, blue eyes, stout build.

38. Isaac VINCENT, being held for the murder of
Samuel HOGAN, escaped from the Emanuel County jail. 
Issued 12 October 1829.

39. Lawson BRYANT was indicted for murder of a Negoe
man belonging to Wiley BARRON by Monroe County Grand
Jury, last October term.  Issued 13 November 1829.  
Bryant is 24 or 25 years old, 6 ft. 2 inches tall,
well made, strong and active, light hair, fair
complexion, and grayish blue eyes.


40. On the night of the 12th , John RUSSELL,
convicted of murder at the last Superior Court of
Oglethorpe County and sentenced to hang on 1st of
December, made his escape. Issued 17 November 1829.

41. On October last, Benjamin STIDMAN was murdered
in Jasper County by James GREENE. Greene is about 24
years of age, 5 ft. 8-10 inches tall, light hair,
and gray eyes. Issued 16 December 1829

42.  Frederick CONNER, charged with the murder of
Richard ALLEN, escaped from the Meriwether County
jail on the 28th ulto.  Issued 10 September 1830.
Conner is 43 years old, 6 ft. high, stout, sandy
hair mixed with gray and gray eyes.

43. William STEPROE, on the 29th October last,
murdered Sikes SANDERS in Pulaski County. Issued 16
November 1830.

44. Person sought who released Joseph BELL of
Montgomery County (who has since been recaptured),
who was being held for murder of Matthew SAPP. Bell
escaped from the McIntosh County jail in Darien Co.
Issued 5 May 1831.

45.  Joseph McEARLY murdered a Negro man named Jim,
Property of James Hatcher, in Wilkenson County.
Issued 8 June 1831.

46.  Harvey OlMSTEAD, held for horse-stealing, and
Thomas HOLDER, held for passing counterfiet money,
escaped from the Columbia County jail on the 14th
Inst.  Issued 22 August 1831.

47. On 5 August 1831, Willy ANDERSON murdered
William GOODSON in Habersham County,   Anderson is a
small man, black eyes and hair, quick spoken, and
has been charged with the commission of many crimes.
Issued 4 October 1831.

48. On 21 November 1830, John WEST and James WEST
murdered James LOCKOBY in Carroll County. Issued 12
March 1832.

49.  On 28 June last, John HUNT murdered Zachariah
WILLIAMSON in Jones County. Issued 21 July 1832.

50. On 13 July instant, George H. SIMS murdered
William B. Taff in Houston County. Issued  21 July
1832.

51.  On 31 March last, John C. POPE was murdered by
John HILL in Wilkes County. Issued 21 July 1832.

52. On 30 December 1831, William POWELL of Thomas
County was murdered by John BRYAN  and William
McClendal of Leon County, Florida.  Issued 8 August
1832.

53. On 11 June 1832, ISAAC BUSH was murdered in
Burke County by his brother JOHN BUSH.  Issued 8
August 1832.

54. On the 9 November, SIMPSON NEWELL was murdered
in Pike County by JOHN BRADBERRY.  Bradberry is
about 60 years old, 5 ft. 5 inches tall, square
built, of considerable muscular strength, blue eyes,
gray hair, talkative and speaks with a strong voice.
Issued 19 November 1832.

55. On the night of 12 December, Lemuel Smith was
murdered in the town of Milledgeville, Baldwin
County, by WILLIAM FLOURNOY of Putnam County. Issued
14 December 1832.

56. On 24 December last, JOHN MALPHURS of Camden
County was murdered by CHARLTON MIZELL.  Issued 2
February 1833.

57. On February 14 instant, LATON HALL murdered JOHN
H. BEDINGFIELD in Washington County.  Issued 18
February 1833.

58.  James MOCK of Dooly County was murdered on the
evening of March 30, last by WILLIAM GILMORE.
Issued 11 April 1833.

59. WILLIAM T. JONES was convicted of robbery at the
last term in Court in Pike County, On the night of
the, 8th  broke out of jail. He is 24 or 25 years of
age, fair complexion, teeth full in front, scare
across the back of his shoulders and about 5 ft. 5
or 6 inches tall. Issued 16 April 1833.

60. On the July 4th 1833, RANSOM NAVAMNE was
murdered by DAVID E. WALKER of Harris County.
Issued 2 July 1833.

61. On Sept. 11, 1833 MILLEY MAXEY of Clarke Co.
died from wounds inflicted by her husband, JOHN
GRIER MAXEY.  John Maxey is age 27, small stature,
full face, dark hair, fair complexion and about
5’- 5 inches tall. Issued  17 September 1833.

62. GEORGE TOOKE, a Cherokee Indian charged with the
murder of JAMES L. BOWMAN and his family, escaped
from Dekalb County.  Tooke is 25 years old, 5’-9
or 10 inches tall, light complexion for a Indian,
stout, black hair and eyes, speaks broken English
and is supposed to be lurking about in  Cherokee
County.  Issued 26 October 1853.

63. On October 8th 1853, AUGUSTUS L. GLOVER murdered
JAMES L. ROSS in Jasper County. Glover is 20 years
old, six feet or taller, black eyes.  Issued 26
October 1853.

64. On Dec. 21, 1833, ROBERT C. BEASLEY was murdered
by SAMUEL McDANIEL in Jasper County. McDaniel is
said to be about 32 years old, weighing 200 lbs or
more, a scare across his nose, hazel eyes, light
hair. Issued 4 January 1834.

65. JAMES L. ANDERSON was murdered in Monroe County
on the 6th of January, 1834 by JACOB LEWIS, who is
about 21 years old, light hair.  Issued 3 February
1834.

66. JOHN HATCHER was murdered in Twiggs County by
JOSEPH SAWYER on the 2nd of August 1834. Sawyer is
5’ 8-10 inches tall, thin, fair hair.  Issued 21
August 1834.

67. WINFRED MOORE murdered CLABORN FOREHAND in Burke
County on the 2nd. Moore is about 35 years old,
slender built, fair hair and about 5 ‘ 9-10
inches. Issued 21 August 1834

68. CALVIN J.  HANKS was murdered by JOHN W.
THOMPSON on the 15th of August in Habersham County.
HARRIS escaped. He is said to be 5’ 8-9 inches
tall, square made, dark skin, high forehead. Issued
21 August 1834.

69. Cherokee Indians who escaped from Gwinett County
Jail, SANTOOGA, JOHNSON and TITUS are sought, as are
DUCK and SWIMMER, two other Cherokee Indians charged
with the murder of ELI HICKS.    Issued 13 January
1835.

70. LIN C. RILEY was murdered sometime in the month
of January, by PHILLIP JOHNSTON in Hall County.
Issued 5 February 1835.

71. On the 19th of February SWAFFORD STALLSWORTH was
murdered in jones County by JAMES HOLLIDAY. Holliday
is 5’-11 inchaes tall, 40 years old, light
complexion, square jaw line. Issued 23 February
1835.

72. On the night of the 18th or 20th, THOMAS KING,
HIRAM KING, GEORGE KING and JOHN KING, with 2 others
named ROUSE, entered the house of Mrs. JANE CASEY in
the County of Camden in this state and in a most
atrious and savage manner, murdered her daughter
NANCY CASEY, who was the mother of a  Infant Child
and a young man named JAMES SCOTT, and also mortally
wounded several other members of the family. Thomas
KING and his sons HIRAM and GEORGE have fled
Justice.  Issued 27 February 1835.

73. On the 14th February, EDWARD JOHNSON was
murdered in Twiggs county by ANDREW B. HUGHES..
Issued 12 March 1835.

74. On the 4th RALPH MASON murdered NATHANIEL W.
WALLER in Monroe County. Mason professes to be a
Carpenter by trade.  Issued  16 March 1859

75. On the 14th, David SHARP was murdered in Burke
County by STEPHEN W. BLOUNT JR. Blount is 25-26
years old, pale, well dressed, not over 5 foot 5
inches.  Issued 23 July 1835.

76. On the 17th, DANIEL R. COLEMAN was murdered in
Sumter County by JEREMIAH THOMPSON.  Issued 27
November 1835.

77. On November 15, 1834 PIERCE GORE was murdered in
Richmond County by MIRAM, alias HARMON, WHITE and
THOMAS STRINGFELLOW.  White is 5 ‘-10 inches tall,
heavy made, light complexion, between 20-25 years
old. Stringfellow is 5’-  10 inches tall, weighs
about 165 lbs., dark complexion, between 23 and 25
years old.  Issued 8 December 1835.

78. NATHAN SWEAT, who was convicted at the last
November term of the Superior Court of Apling County
for Cattle Stealing and sentenced to four years in
Prison has escaped from Telfair County Jail on
November 29,1834, where he was lodged for safe
keeping. Sweat is about 45 years old, dark
complexion, black eyes and hair.  Issued December
11, 1835.

79. In March 1829 JOHN RAPER was murdered in Carroll
County by GEORGE BLACKWOOD, a Cherokee Indian,
believed to be lurking in Cherokee County. Issued
18 December 1835.

80. On January 4, 1836, WILLIAM SIZEMORE of Anderson
District S.C. was murdered in Franklin County by
JAMES WILKERSON of Franklin Co.  Issued 14 January
1836.

81. On March 15, 1836, William Taylor and Catherine
Taylor (his wife) murdered a Negro woman named CATY,
the property of WILLIAM TAYLOR in Troup County.
William Taylor is 50 years of age, blue eyes, light
hair. Catherine Taylor is a tall woman about 40
years of age, black hair, blue eyes, fair
complexion.  Issued 1 April 1836.

82. On the 24th ulto, MOSES CAMP was murdered in
Gwinnett Co. by THOMAS J. CHAMBERS. Chambers is 30
years old, middle sized.  Issued 3 November 1856.

83. JAMES W. MERCER of Pulaski County murdered JAMES
B. WHITE in Laurens County. Issued 3 November 1856.

84. ALLEN YOUNG was found guilty of Murder by the
Superior Court of Telfair County. No Victim named.
Issued 3 December 1836.

85. HIRAM SMOOT was murdered by HENRY D. WHITE in
Upson County on February 26th 1837.  Issued 16 March
1837.

86. The Grand Jury of the Superior Court of Ware
County May Term charged SAMPSON B. CRAVER with
murdering LEONARD MILLS on March 19, 1836.  Issued
16 March 1837.

87. ROBERT BERRY was murdered by BENJAMIN SAUNDERS
in Gilmore County. Issued 24 June 1837.

88. On July 24 1837 NEWELL J> THOMAS was murdered by
Duncan McCORQUEDALE in BAKER COUNTY. McCorquedale is
about 35 years old, black hair & thin.  Issued 31
August 1837.

89. George Smith, charged with the murder of one
SOULD, escaped from Camden County Jail. Smith is 35
years old, black eyes, dark hair.  Issued 1
September 1837.

90. JOHN J. WILLIAMS  was murdered on July 15 1837
in Monroe County by ALVORD ARNZ and JOHN CHANDLER.
ARNZ is 25 years of sge 5’-10 inches tall, sallow
commplexion, hump shouldered. Chandler is 18/19
years old, 5’ 6-7 inches tall, fair complexion,
blue eyes, dark hair.  Issued 15 September 1837.

91. Proclamation for the arrest of the unknown
person who murdewred the unknown man found in
Savannah River, three miles below Augusta.   Issued
16 September 1840. 

92. On September 29, ELIAS J. PRATHER was murdered
by JAMES WILLIAMS in Wilkes Count. Williams is much
addicted to drinking and gambling. Issued 13 October
1837.

93. On July 10 1835, NICHOLAS C. LEWIS was murdered
by JOHN GREGORY in THOMAS County. Gregory is 4 ft, 6
inches tall , light hair, blue eyes.  Issued 15
January 1838.

94. On Janusry 24 THOMAS ADAMS was murdered in Dooly
County by SILAS BRUMBERLOW.  Issued 7 February 1838.

95. On March 21 CHARLOTTE, a Negro woman belonging
to John P. King, Esq. was murdered in Richmond
County by CHARLES WOOSTER.  Wooster is of middle
ages, 5’-9 inches tall. Issued 1838.

96. On September 4 1838, ELIZABETH SLAY was murdered
by her husband WILLIAM SLAY in Dekalb County. Issued
12 September 1838.

97. DANIEL V. PALMER is charged with murdering JAMES
GUNN in Jasper County on August 21, 1838.  Palmer if
6 ft. tall, weighs 190 Lbs, dark brown hair, hazel
eyes. Issued 15 October 1838.

98. WILLIAM W.  THOMPSON was murdered by GEORGE S.
LOVING in Bibb County on October 6, 1838. Loving is
19-20 years old. Issued 22 October 1838.

99. On 22 October 1838, THOMAS R. MITCHELL was
murdered by JOHN H. HENDRICKS in Jasper County.
Issued 5 November 1838.

100. On December 4, HILLIARD J. BARKSDALE was
murdered in Putnam County by WILLIAM GARRARD.
Issued 13 December 1838.

101. On November last, a murder was committed
against a man supposidly names ELIAS M. ISAAC by J.
W. Coles and JOHN DICKERSON in Jones County. Coles
is a native of Connecticutt. His real name is JULIUS
WILLIAMS COLES.  Issued 29 January 1839.

102. On the 19th, JAMES DOOLY was murdered in
Columbia County by JOHN RAY. Ray is 25 years old.
Issued 31 May 1839.

103. On May 2, 1839 MARTIN COCHRAN in Cobb County
was murdered by STEPHEN BURNLEY. Issued 3 June.
1839.

104. On 27 May 1839, CHARLES CARGILE was murdered by
WILLIAM J. McMILLIAN in Muscogee County. Issued 3
June 1839.

105. THOMAS E. HARDEE was murdered by CHARLES
ROSIGNOL in the town of St. Marys in Camden County
on the  August 13th.  Issued  14 September 1839.

106. On December 1838, Charles B. HARDIN was
murdered by JACOB CARTER in Marion County.  Issued
27 September 1839.

107. OBADIAH CHAPPELL was murdered by WILEY HUNT in
Harris County on Sept. 21st. Issued 16 October 1839.

108. On August 31 1839, James Caubin was murdered by
JOHN O. CARTER in Habersham County.   Issued 17
October 1839.

109. On the 8th, JOHN DRAPER of Sumter County was
murdered by DEMPSEY J. JUSTICE. ISSUED 24 October
1839.

110. On the 26th of Jan. 1838, MILTON GROVER was
murdered by LEWIS JOHNSON and WILLIAM GROVER in
Crawford County.  Issued 27 November 1839.

111. On Nov. 20th 1839 JONAS PLATT was murdered by
PETER MURRAY in the County of Early.  Issued 27
November 1839.

112. John HIMMERY was murdered by JAMES SHERN in
Sumpter County on the 9th of Dec. Issued 13 December
1839.

113. On Dec. 23. 1839, JOHN ENGLISH was murdered by
MOSES REESE in Franklin Co. REESE is between 45-50
years old.  Issued 14 February 1840.

114. On Nov. 16 1839, WILLIAM WELLS was murdered by
LEVI LONG in Liberty County. Long is 35 years old, 6
ft. tall.  Issued 24  February 1840.

115. REUBEN M. SNELLINGS was murdered in Morgan
County by THOMAS SHANKS, JR. of Morgan County.
Shanks is 35 years of age, 6 ft-2 inches tal.
Issued 16 September 1840.

116. ABSOLOM LYLES was murdered by DAVID PUCKETT in
Bibb County on the 6th of November. Pucket is 25-27
