The first Glazes to enter the New World may have landed in Charleston
(originally called Charlestown), South Carolina in the late 1600's. The
Last Will and Testament of a Gabriel Glaze is recorded 5-19-1712 in
Beckley Co., SC. He lists his heirs as brothers William, Malachi, and
John Glaze, brother-in-law George Barnett, and cousin George Barnett, son
of George Barnett. This Glaze family seems to have prospered and gained
considerable prominence in early Beckley Co. Another group of Glazes
appear in the late 1700's in Maryland and Virginia. A Joseph Glaze, age
64, and a William Glaze, age 23, were in Frederick Co., Md, in 1796. The
"History of Montgomery Co., MD, 1650-1879," by T.S.H. Boyd, p. 103,
lists the "Glaizes" as prominent members of the county, but does not
specifically date them. The original Glaze in Montgomery Co., may have
been a certain Bazil T. Glaze who seems to have been a resident of that
county as early as 1750. The first census of the United States (1790)
records a George Glaze and John Glaze in Hampshire Co., VA.

Many Glazes served in the American Revolution: (1) From North
Carolina—our Thomas Glaze, a Corporal Samuel Glaze, plus John and
Jonathan Glaze. (2) From Maryland—a Thomas Glaze born ca 1712, died ca
1778, and married "Ruth"; a William Glaze born ca 1753, died about 1806,
and married "Mary." (3) From Virginia—Pvt. George Glaze born ca 1748,
died ca 1826, and married Elizabeth Williams. (4) From South Carolina—a
Gideon Glaze born ca 1760, died ca 1790, and married "Sarah." (5) From
Pennsylvania—A George Glaze (Klaze?) born ca 1760, died ca 18121, and
married Eva Smith. (6) And from Georgia—our Reuben Glaze.

It does seem clear that the South Carolina, Maryland, and Virginia Glazes
migrated westward into North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Kentucky.
It has not been possible, however, to document the kinship of our North
Carolina Glazes to any of those earliest settlers (except the Maryland
Glazes). Since Lincoln and Wilkes Cos., GA, border South Carolina, it
would be easy to assume that our Glazes must have first sojourned in
Granville, Co., NC. The Georgia census records and Milly Glaze's pension
application clearly document our Glazes migrating to Georgia from North
Carolina. It is possible that the SC, MD, & VA, Glazes are all the same
family. This would, however, require the South Carolina Glazes to have
migrated North before turning West—a possibility but definitely contrary
to early pioneer migratory patterns. My hunch is that the SC, VA, & MD,
Glazes are two separate families that both migrated into Georgia about
the same time in order to take advantage of the Georgia Land Lotteries.
Perhaps additional research will document our kinship to one or both of
these early families.

MEANING OF THE SURNAME "GLAZE":

The name Glaze, Glays, Glais, Klase, & Klais is English and/or German.
The DAR records catalogue the English "Glaze," and its variations, and
the German "Klase," and its variations together as the same surname.
According to Elsdon C. Smith, author of "New Dictionary of American
Names," it means "one with a pale gray complexion."

GENERATION SEVEN: JANE C. GLAZE:

Jane C. Glaze (JCG), the great grandmother of Claude Alexander Smith, was
the oldest daughter and oldest child of William H. Glaze and his
unidentified first wife. She was born ca 1815 in Lincoln Co., GA, and
married George W. Gullatt on 1-11-1834 in Harris Co., Ga. She died after
1880 in Lee Co., AL. George Gullatt is discussed under THE GULLATT
FAMILY. In 1860, just prior to the beginning of the Civil War, Jane and
family were living in Harris Co., GA, but by 1880 they were living in Lee
Co., AL. They had departed Georgia in 1862 and first settled in Russell
Co., AL. For unspecified reasons, William H. Glaze was not fond of
Jane's husband and did not trust him with her inheritance. Possibly her
father's hostility could be the result of Jane and George's relationship
prior to their marriage. It would appear that Jane and George's oldest
child, Alexander, was born exactly nine months after their marriage.
One record has him born as early as 1833. Jane and George were not
married until 1-11-1834. Unfortunately, Jane's mother remains
unidentified. William H. Glaze and his first wife were, undoubtedly
married in Granville, Co., NC, and came to Georgia together, but she must
have died between 1820 and 1833. Her grave is unlocated. Jane and
George appear in the 1860 census of Harris Co., GA. They are living in
HH 101. In HH 100 is Nancy Glaze, age 51, William Glaze's widow and
Jane's stepmother. Jane and George also appear in the 1850 census of
Harris Co., GA, living in HH 54. Living in HH 53 is Alexander Huguley
and in HH 55 is George Huguley.

City, AL. In 1880 they were living in Russell Co.,, AL. Peter and
"Minna" are buried in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Phoenix City, AL. In
1881, Peter and G.W. Gullatt borrowed $150.00 from W.L. Tillman for the
purpose of planting crops—corn, fodder, peas, potatoes, and cotton seed.
Evidently the two were going to plant said crops on a plantation owned by
Tom Ingram (100acres). G.W. Gullatt also borrowed money to plant on
land (40 acres) known as the Boykin Jones place. These farms were
located in Russell Co., AL.

was born in 1827 and died 1-4-1915. In 1860, Nancy and John were still

GENERATION EIGHT: WILLIAM H. GLAZE:

William H. Glaze (WHG), Jane Glaze's father, was the second son and
second child of Thomas Glaze Sr., and Milly Frazier. He was born
9-1-1785 in Granville Co., NC. He second married Nancy Arnett, daughter
of Samuel Arnett and Ann Spear. He died sometime before 2-7-1859. He is
buried in the Glaze Family Cemetery, east of Midland, Harris Co., GA.
The dates on his headstone read born 9-1-1787 and died 1850, but these
dates do not correspond with the dates given by Milly Frazier Glaze in
her pension application. In fact, he does appear in the 1850 census of
Harris Co., HH 46. Nancy Arnett was born 9-1807 in SC, and died 4-9-1887.
She is also buried in the Glaze Family Cemetery. From Milly Frazier
Glaze's pension application we know that WHG was in GA, in 1800. His
oldest daughter, our Jane Glaze, was born in 1815, and WHG appears in
both the 1820 and 1830 census records of Lincoln Co., GA. Nancy Arnett
appears as a widow in the 1860 census of Harris Co., GA. It should be
noted, however, that there were at least four William Glazes in early
Georgia and North Carolina and care should be taken to distinguish one
from the other. Our ancestor's occupation was that of "planter" (to be
distinguished from "farmer") and by the time he prepared his LWT owned a
substantial plantation and many slaves. In 1848 he was a 2nd Lieutenant
in the Georgia Volunteer Cavalry, 67th Regiment. He served as a member
of the Board of Trustees for "Shoal's Academy," in Harris Co., GA. The
following is taken from "History of Harris Co., 1827-1961," by Louise
Calhoun Barfield, The Columbia Office Supply Co., Columbus, GA, 1961, pp.
435-436:
"Ellerslie is located on what was the intersection of the
stagecoach route of the Alabama Road and the Talbotton Road eighteen
miles from Columbus Ga...That the community was interested in education
is evidenced by two advertisements for early academies: (1) Ellerslie
Male and Female Academy...(2) Shoals Academy two and one half miles south
of Ellerslie. A typical noticed of accommodations listed detailed

W.W. Wellborn (Board of Trustees), Harris Co., 12-20-1853."

William H. Glaze left a most interesting LWT dated 11-1-1856, Harris Co.,
GA.:

beloved son William G. Glaze and my worthy son-in-law John W. Jackson
executors of this my last will and testament—this 1st November A.D. 1856.

Note that WHG refers to William H. Glaze Sr., who married his daughter
Sidney. As of 1999 this man had not been identified. He also refers to
his "worthy son-in-law," suggesting that he was not fond of all of his
sons-in-law. Finally, note that WHG leaves his daughter Jane Gullatt's
(wife of George W. Gullat) inheritance to her brother William H. Glaze
Jr., to hold in trust for her. One might suspect that WHG was not
especially fond of George W. Gullatt.

WHG died shortly before the beginning of the Civil War. Evidently, his
property was divided as he desired, but was lost by his survivors in the
aftermath of the War, said aftermath being known as the "Reconstruction
Period," a period of extraordinary pillage and exploitation by the
northern "carpetbaggers."

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM H. GLAZE:

I. Jane Glaze born ca 1815 in Lincoln Co., GA, and married George
Washington Gullatt on 1-11-1834. George and Jane are in the direct
bloodline of Alexander Deaton Haas & Zachary Deaton Haas. See above.

II. Ann Glaze was born 12-15-1816 and married James O. Burdette. She died
2-4-1870 and is buried in the Glaze Family Cemetery in Harris Co., GA.
James Burdette was born 9-10-1807 and died 10-25-1889. He is buried in
the Glaze Family Cemetery. He inherited $500 from his father-in-law.
This family appears in the 1850 & 1870 census of Harris Co. In 1850 they
are living in HH 64 and in 1870 HH 107. In 1850 James is recorded as a
"farmer" owning land valued at $1000.

	CHILDREN OF ANN GLAZE BURDETTE:

	A. Alexander Burdette was born ca 1838 in GA.

	B. Henderson Burdette was born ca 1838 in GA.

	C. Appamundus (?)(m) Burdette was born ca 1838 in GA.

	D. Emma (Marletia?) Burdette was born ca 1844 in GA. Possibly
Emma and Marletia are two different children. Marletia does not appear
in the 1850 census nor Emma in the 1860 census.

III. Sidney Glaze (f) was born 5-18-1829 and married William H. Glaze Sr.
She died 11-26-1908 and is buried in the Glaze Family Cemetery in Harris
Co. Note the sixteen year gap between the births of Ann and Sidney.
Perhaps WHG's first wife had died and he remarried during the interim??
In 1870 in Harris Co., after her father's death and after the Civil War,
Sidney and her husband (who was born ca 1820 in GA) are found living with
her widowed mother, age 62, along with a Jesse Stallings and Moses
Prather, age 12. Sidney's inheritance was left in trust to John W.
Jackson, a "worthy son-in-law" by WHG, under the following conditions:
"....In the event of William H. Glaze Sr., dying before my daughter
Sidney, then said John W. Jackson is to turn over to said Sidney the
portion hereby bequeathed, but int the event of my said Sidney's
departing this life without issue, then the said property to be equally
divided between her brothers and sisters..." I wonder how WHG felt about
his son-in-law William H Glaze Sr.? How were they related? Was WHG
opposed to the marriage?

IV. William H. Glaze Jr., was born ca 1833 in GA, and married Priscilla
Jackson. Priscilla was born ca 1840 in GA, died 9-9-1864, and is buried
in the Glaze Family Cemetery. William and Priscilla were in Harris Co.,
Ga., in 1860 living in HH 117. Living with them in 1860 is a Lucy Payne,
age 7, and a William Thomas, age 21, recorded as a "laborer." William
Glaze Jr., was one of the executors of his father's estate. In 1850,
William is still living with his father and is working as an overseer on
his father's plantation.

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM H. GLAZE JR.:

	A. Ella Glaze was born ca 1856 in GA.

	B. Hattie Glaze was born ca 1859 in GA.

V. Milly Ann Glaze was born ca 1835 in GA, and married John W. Jackson,
the "worthy son-in-law," on 1-3-1851 in Harris Co., GA. John was born
ca 1830 in GA. He was a teacher. I wonder if he was related to
Priscilla Jackson? It seems possible that William H. Glaze favored his
"worth son-in-law" because he was a teacher and therefore able to read
and write? Milly, John, and family are recorded in the 1860 census of
Harris Co., living in HH 197. John is recorded as a "teacher" owning
land valued at $1800.

CHILDREN OF MILLY ANN GLAZE JACKSON:

	A. James W. Jackson was born ca 1852 in GA.

	B. John C. Jackson was born ca 1854 in GA.

	C. Mary J. Jackson was born ca 1856 in GA.

	D. Joel Jackson was born ca 1859 in GA, and may have died before 1870.

	E. Wesley C. Jackson was born ca 1860 in GA.

	F. Eddy A. Jackson was born ca 1865 in GA.

VI. Nancy Glaze was born ca 1836 in GA.

VII. Sarah Glaze was born ca 1838 in GA.

VIII. Wesley B. Glaze was born ca 1840 in GA, and was still at home with
his mother in 1860.

IX. Cynthia "Cissy" Glaze was born was born ca 1843 in GA, and died in
1929 in Sabine Co., TX. She is buried in the King Cemetery, Geneva,
Sabine Co., TX. She married Elias Lafayette King in Harris Co., GA, in
1857. Lafayette was born 3-13-1828 in GA, and died in 1876 in Geneva,
Sabine Co., TX. He is also buried in the King Cemetery. His parents
were John King and Elizabeth Dubose. Cynthia 2nd married David Dean.
Cynthia was Lafayette's 2nd wife. He had first married Areanna Gray in
1853. Elias, Cynthia, and appear in the 1860 census of Talbot Co., Ga.
At this time they had no children. Elias is recorded as a "planter"
owning property valued at $3000. He owned personal property valued at
$15,485. This would very likely have been the value of his "slaves."

	CHILDREN OF CYNTHIA GLAZE KING:

	A. Laura King who was born in 1868 and married Daniel S. Dean.

	B. Sidney W. King who was born 2-10-1870 in Sabine Co., TX, and
married Mollie Schull on 12-20-1893. Sidney died 10-9-1913 and is buried
in the King Cemetery in Sabine Co., TX. Sydney 2nd married Fannie Bell.

	C. Elias Dubose King was born in 1875, married Gertrude Harden in
1907, and died in 1967. He is buried in the Bronson Cemetery in Bronson, TX.

		Children of Elias Dubose King:
		1. Mozelle King was born in 1914 and married Carl Crouch.
Mozelle and Carl lived in Denton, TX.
		2. Elias Dubose King Jr

X. Frances (f) Glaze was born ca 1847 and married Elias Beal. Elias was
born ca 1845 GA. This family appears in the 1870 census of Talbot Co.,
GA. They are living in HH 348. Elias is recorded as owning land valued
at $600. Living with the family was Franklin Gushom, age 19, Avalize(?)
Collerson age 3, and Alice Collerson, age 11.

	CHILDREN OF FRANCES GLAZE BEAL:

	A. Clifford Beal born ca 1865 in GA.

	B. Thomas Beal born ca 1869 in GA.

GENERATION NINE: THOMAS GLAZE SR.:

Thomas Glaze Sr.(TGSR), the great grandfather of Josephine Gullatt, was
the son of Benjamin Glaze and "Catherine" and was born ca 1760. The DAR
records have him born ca 1769, but since his first child was born in
1783, the earlier date seems more appropriate. He married Amelia "Milly"
Frazier, the daughter of William Frazier, on 12-30-1782 in Granville Co.,
NC, and died 2-13-1805 in Lincoln Co., GA. Milly's Revolutionary War
Widow's Pension Application records that she and Thomas left Granville
Co.,. NC, for Wilkes and Lincoln Cos., GA, after the Revolutionary War.
Thomas had enlisted in the Revolution in 1776, in Hillsboro District,
Granville Co., NC, and served until the end of the war. He served under
a Col. Murray and was present as "Bluford's Defeat." TGSR was clearly in
Wilkes Co., as early as 11-1-1786 and is recorded in the 1801 tax
district of a Capt. Smith and at that time was taxed for 380 acres and
six slaves. Thomas died at the early age of 45 years and mentions in his
LWT only one of his eleven living children; however, two of his
children—David age 22 and William age 20—were his executors. The
following is the LWT of TGSR and is recorded in Lincoln Co., GA, 1805,
WMR C P. 60:
In the name of God Amen: I Thomas Glaze of Lincoln County and
State of Georgia being of sound mind but low in personal health make this
my last will and testament revoking all others before made by me. In the
first place I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Milly Glaze the
following property to wit: Henry Joe (a slave?)_______also three head of
horses, the sorrel horse, the little black mare, and the young bay colt.
Also fifteen head of cattle_______as she shall choose out of my stock,
also the stock of hogs, sheep, and geese, and all my household furniture
and plantation tools that may be proper for the use of the plantation for
her to have and to hold during her life or widowhood for the purpose of
raising my children and giving them liberal educations. The balance to
be sold to pay all just demands and the balance to be put to interest by
the executors and distributed among my children equally as they become of
age and marry. And it is further my will and desire that my wife Milly
Glaze shall give to each and every one of my children, Sally (Sarah age
18) excepted, the sum of fifty in such household furniture and stocks as
she may think proper and at her death or end of her widowhood the whole
of the property real and personal to bd sold and equally divided among my
children except those that may not be of age nor married shall have the
sum of fifty dollars more to make them all equal and, as such, recommend
myself and dear family into the hands of Almighty God this being my last
will and testament given under my hand and seal this 11th day of February
1805________made his mark.

Milly Frazier, wife of Thomas Glaze Sr., was the fifth daughter and
eleventh of twelve children of William Frazier. She was born 11-26-1765
(perhaps in Granville Co., NC, and died 8-1-1856 in Lincoln Co., GA, at
the age of ninety having been widowed for 51 years. It is assumed that
she is buried in Lincoln Co. Milly made application for a Revolutionary
War Widow's pension on 11-21-1855. This was a rather long and arduous
process and the completed document contains 15 pages. Fortunately, for
those interested in genealogy, it contains a wealth of genealogical
information. The following are the affidavits of Milly Frazier Glaze:
State of Georgia, Lincoln Co.: On this the twenty-first day of
November one thousand eight hundred and fifty-five personally appeared
before me B.F. Tatom, a judge of the Ordinary Court for and in said
County and State, a court of record. Milly Glaze, age ninety years, who
being duly sworn according to law doth on her oath make the following
declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision of the Act of
Congress passed 7-7-1838. She declares that she is the widow of Thomas
Glaze, late of Lincoln Co., Ga., deceased, who entered the army of the
United States in the Revolutionary War in the year 1776, in the county of
Granville, NC, Hillbsboro District, that he served a tour of three months
and then was drafted for three months and served it sour, and then he
entered for the war and continued to the end of it and was a Bluford's
defeat and other places probably, which her infirm age will not allow her
to remember and she further declares that he was a private in said war,
and she has no recollection of the name of his captain, but she thinks he
was under a Colonel Murray, but she is not sure. And she further
declares that she was married to the said Thomas Glaze, her husband, in
the county of Granville, NC, on the thirteenth day of December 1782 by a
parson Micklejohn, and the result of that marriage was twelve children
whose births are hereunto annexed and she further declares and says that
she and her husband came to Georgia after the war and settled in Lincoln
Co., and that her husband died in this county on the 13th day of February
1805, and she has remained a widow since that period and she further
declares that no family record exits of the marriage of herself or the
death of her husband or the birth of her children. And she refers to the
proof hereunto sent to maintain the death of her husband, her widowhood,
and their marriage relations. Sworn to and subscribed before me this day
and year above written.

family record is lost. Sworn to and subscribed before me this the 26th

Signed and delivered in the
presence of Jefferson Ulinon(?).

Initially Milly was granted a pension in the amount of $46.66 per year
but this was later increased to $64.31 retroactive to 3-4-1848. The Hon.
Thomas H. Lumpkin received these monies in her stead.

Milly Frazier Glaze's father was William Frazier who was born ca 1825.
After marrying three times he died between 1-16-1793 and 2-1793 in
Granville, Co., NC. The last will and testament of William Frazier is
dated 1-6-1793 and was proved 2-1793 in Granville Co., NC.

CHILDREN OF THOMAS GLAZE Sr. ( & Milly Frazier):

I. David Glaze was born 10-2-1783 in Granville Co., NC, and died before
1-1821 in Lincoln Co., GA. A David Glaze was in Jones Co., Ga, as early
as 1808. A David Glaze was justice of the inferior court of Lincoln Co.,
GA, from 6-1819 until 1821. A David Glaze had 300 acres of land in
Lincoln Co., in 1802. Benjamin Glaze had a son and grandson named David.
The Wilkes and Lincoln County records don't always allow a distinction to
be made between the uncle and the nephew (the uncle was about 12 years
older than the nephew)

II. William H. Glaze was born 9-1-1785 in Granville Co., NC. He 1st
married Nancy Bond & 2nd married Nancy Arnett who was the daughter of
Samuel Arnett and Ann Spear. Nancy was born 9-1807 and died 4-9-1887.
Ann was Spear was born ca 1870. As of 1999 William's first wife had not
been identified. It is thought that she died back in Granville Co.,
prior to the Glaze families moving to Georgia. William and Nancy are in
the direct bloodline of Alexander Deaton Haas & Zachary Deaton Haas. See
above. The following is the LWT of Samuel Arnett recorded in Will Book HH
p. 390, 1819-1836, Wilkes Co., GA. This record documents Nancy's
marriage to William Glaze. Note Samuel's wish that his widow continue
taking care of the family clothing!! Perhaps old Samuel was somewhat
chauvinistic.
Georgia, Wilkes Co.: In the name of God Amen. I Samuel Arnett of
the county and state of aforesaid being of sound mind and disposing

III. Sarah Glaze who was born 9-1-1787 in Wilkes Co., GA, and married Mr.
Cornelison after her mother's death.

IV. Margaret Glaze who was born 12-21-1788 in Wilkes Co.,. GA, and died
before 1-1856.

V. Samuel Glaze I who was born 4-21-1788 in Wilkes Co., GA, and died in
infancy.

VI. Tandy Glaze was born 2-24-1792 in Lincoln Co., GA, and died before
1-1856.

VII. Samuel Glaze II was born 11-22-1793 in Lincoln Co., GA, and married
"Tabitha." Tabitha was born in 1796 in VA. Samuel died after 1880 in
Lincoln Co., GA. The census records of Lincoln Co., for 1830, 40, 50, &
60 indicate that Samuel had seven sons and one daughter. He was a farmer
and in some way is related to the Walker family. In 1850, Augustus
Walker, age 8, was living with the family and in 1860 William A.
(Augustus?) Walker, age 18, was in the home. They were living in HH 190.
Samuel is identified as a "planter" owning property valued at $1500. It
is most difficult to distinguish one Wilkes-Lincoln Co., "Samuel" from
another. There was a Samuel Glaze Jr., perhaps the son of Samuel Sr.,
and a Samuel II, the sixth child of Thomas Glaze Sr. Samuel II assisted
his mother in securing her Revolutionary Was pension by swearing out the
following:
State of Georgia, Lincoln Co.: On this 14th day of March eighteen
hundred and fifty-six personally appeared before me Benjamin F. Tatom

X. Asa Glaze was born 8-18-1799 in Lincoln Co., GA, and died before
1-1856. An Asa Glaze was living in Lee Co., AL, in 1850. He is listed
as age 44 and was living alone.

XI. Elizabeth Glaze was born 4-2-1801 in Lincoln Co., GA.

XII. Thomas Glaze Jr., was born 4-25-1803 in Lincoln Co.,(the 1850 census
indicates he was born in 1799). He 1st married Matilda Dallis on
2-1801823 also in Lincoln Co. He 2nd married Permelia Rhodes and died
in 1876. He is buried in Glaze Memorial Gardens, Lincoln Co., GA.
Matilda was the daughter of Thomas Dallis Sr. Permelia was born ca 1809
and died in 1888. She is buried near her husband in Glaze Memorial
Gardens. It should be noted that the birth date of Thomas Glaze Jr., as
it appears on his headstone does not correspond with the information
given by Milly Glaze when making her pension application. Thomas Jr.,
seems to have lived his entire life in Lincoln Co., and was a prominent
member of the Goshen Baptist Church in Lincolnton. Thomas Glaze Jr.,
should not be confused with a Thomas Glaze who married Chislemon(?)
Culvert on 1-8-1812 in Putnam Go., GA. It is likely that these two men
were related but as of 1999 that relationship has not been determined.
Thomas Jr., appears in the 1840,50, & 60 census of Lincoln Co. A Thomas
Glaze is recorded in the 1820 Census of Habersham Co., Ga. Thomas would
appear to have had twelve children and at least two of these by Matilda
Dallis. It could be that Matilda died during the birth of her second
child. In 1880 Thomas's widow, Permelia Rhodes Glaze, was living in
Lincoln Co., with her sons Otis and Alexander, her daughter Permelia, and
her sister-in-law "Dailey," age 70. Also present were four of
Alexander's children. In the 1850 census of Lincoln Co., Thomas is
recorded in HH 110. He is identified as a "planter" owning property
valued at $2000. In the 1860 census of Lincoln Co., Thomas and family
are living in HH 259. He is recorded as a "farmer" owning property
valued at $3500. In 1870 he is in HH 643 and his land is valued at
$1800. One should remember that the Civil War occurred between 1860 & 1870.

	CHILDREN OF THOMAS GLAZE JR.:

	A. Huston (Houston?) Glaze was born 2-16-1825 in Lincoln Co., GA,
and married Mary Jane Parks after 1860. He died 8-121-1897 and is buried
in the cemetery at the old Glaze home in Lincoln Co. Mary was born
2-16-1845 and is buried next to her husband. In 1850, as recorded in the
1850 census of Lincoln Co., Huston was working as an overseer for John
Zellers. In 1860 he is living with William Dallis, in HH 74. He is
identified as "manager." Mary Jane is not present. In the 1870 census of
Lincoln Co., in HH 1090, "Houre," "Mary J.," and children are recorded.
He is identified as a farmer owning property valued at $2000.

It should be noted that all of Huston's children were born in
Lincoln Co., GA.

	B. Jane Glaze was born ca 1829 in Lincoln Co., GA.

	C. David E. Glaze was born ca 1832 in Lincoln Co., Ga. He appears
in the 1960 census of Lincoln Co., living in the home of a Mary Simmons,
age 72. He is married to "Jane," who was born ca 1844. David is
identified as a "merchant" having a personal estate worth $3500.

	D. Sarah A. Glaze was born ca 1835 in Lincoln Co., GA.

	E. Eleanor Glaze was born ca 1838 in Lincoln Co., GA.

	F. Thomas R. Glaze was born in 1841 in Lincoln Co., Ga., and
married Z.T. Wright. She died in 1930 and is buried in Glaze memorial
Gardens. Thomas served in the Civil War in Co., "G," of the 15th GA.,
Regiment.

	G. Alexander N. Glaze was born ca 1842 in Lincoln Co., GA, and
served in Co. "H," of the 37th GA., Regiment during the Civil War. He
died in 1878 and is buried in Glaze Memorial Gardens. The following is
the military record of "A.N. Glaze": He was enlisted on 3-4-1863 in
Lincoln Co., by S.G. Pettus. He was a private in Company "E" of the 8th
Battalion, Ga., Volunteer Infantry. He is later shown as a private in
Co., "H," of the 37th and also shown as 2nd Lt., Co., "K," of the 54th
Reg., GA., Volunteer Infantry. In 4-1864 Alexander was still a private
and had just returned to duty after a 132 day furlough. By 5-1864,
however, he is listed as a 2nd LT. His military record contains no
information about combat or military campaigns. In 1880, Lincoln Co.,
GA., Alexander was living with his mother and brother Otis, and his
sister Permelia.

		Children of Alexander N. Glaze:
		1. Ada Glaze born ca 12871 IN GA.

GENERATION TEN: BENJAMIN GLAZE:

Benjamin Glaze (BG) was born ca 1717 in Charles Co, Maryland and died
before 1782 in Granville, Co., NC. He married Catherine "Caty" Collins
before 1757 in Orange Co., VA. Catherine was the daughter of Joseph
Collins and Susannah Lewis. They resided in St. George's Parish,
Spotsylvania Co., VA. For a detailed history of the Collins family see
"Descendants of William Collins" in the appendix of this document.
Benjamin is listed as a witness to the LWT of a certain Thomas Collins in
Spotsylvania, St George Parish, Va. This LWT is dated 6-3-1751.
Catherine died after 1782. In 1760, BG owned land on both sides of Grassy
Creek, Granville Co., NC. He gave this land to his son Samuel on
2-3-1777. Benjamin had moved his family to Granville, NC, by 12-2-1760.
BG's LWT was proved 12-9-1782 in Granville Co., NC, and mentions his
wife "Catherine" (according to Mrs. James H. Stevenson, 2816 Maryland
Dr., Jonesboro, AR 72401, this lady is Catherine Collins), his ten
children, and his grandson "Jacob." Note that in 1832 there was a Jacob
Glaze living in Habersham Co., NC. The following is the LWT of Benjamin
Glaze:
In the name of God Amen. This ninth day of December in the year
of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty-one, I Benjamin Glaze
of the County of Granville in the State of North Carolina being very sick
and weak but of sound and disposing mind and memory do make and ordain
this my last will and testament. To Wit; I give to my sons Samuel Glaze,
John Glaze, and Thomas Glaze and my daughters Sarah Bond and Catherine
Childs one shilling each to them and their heirs forever. I lend to my
wife Catherine Glaze my whole estate both real and personal during her
natural life or widowhood. I give to my sons Reuben Glaze, David Glaze,
and Lewis Glaze all my land to be equally divided between them to them
and their heirs and assigns forever. I give to my grandson Jacob Glaze
one cow and a calf. I give to my sons Reuben Glaze, David Glaze, and
Lewis Glaze and to my daughters Elizabeth Glaze and Margaret Glaze all my
personal estate including negroes to be equally divided between them to
them and their heirs and assigns forever and lastly I do appoint my
beloved wife Catherine Glaze and my son Reuben Glaze executrix and
executor of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all and every
other wills and testaments by me heretofore made.

                                                                 mark
Signed, sealed, and published as his
last will and testament in presence of
	M. Hunt
	Samuel Smith

Granville County: August Court A.D. 1782. This will was duly
proved by the Oaths of Memucan(?) Hunt and Samuel Smith esq., and ordered
to be recorded. Then Catherine Glaze qualified as executrix and Reuben
Glaze as Executor to the said will.
                                           Teste: Reuben Searcy, C.C.
.
Benjamin Glaze's estate was divided on 11-1786 and this record mentions
sons Reuben, David, Lewis, daughter Margarette, and Robert Frazier
(likely the husband of Elizabeth). Perhaps the other children had
already received their inheritance and left for Georgia and/or South
Carolina. The order of birth of Benjamin's children as of the year 2000
was uncertain.

CHILDREN OF BENJAMIN GLAZE:

I. Samuel Glaze was born ca 1760 in NC. There were clearly two Samuel
Glaze Srs., and one Samuel Glaze Jr., in early Granville Col., NC. One of
the Samuel Glaze Srs., would have been Benjamin's brother. One married
Mary Knight on 10-30-1782 and was given 199 acres of land in NC, for his
American Revolutionary service. He seems to have stayed in NC. In 1820,
his widow was living in Caswell Co., NC. Mary died after 1830. Our
Samuel, on the other hand, had by 1793 moved to Georgia where he took
part in the 1805 Lincoln Co., land lottery. He may have been his
father's favorite son. Old Benjamin gave him 455 acres of land in
Granville Co., in 1777. This gift of land, however, did not prevent him
from moving to Georgia. It is quite possible that these two Samuel's are
first cousins. Our Samuel seems to have been quite an opportunist. He
took part in the Georgia land lotteries of Lincoln and Columbia Cos.,
(1805) and Jackson Co., (1807). As of the year 2000 his children had not
been identified. It seems safe to assume, however, that Samuel Glaze Jr.
(born 1793 Lincoln Co., GA) was his son. Jacob, grandson of BG, may
have also been his son.

	CHILDREN OF SAMUEL GLAZE:

	A. Jacob Glaze who was born after 1770.

	B. David Glaze who was born after 1784.

	C. Ralph Glaze who was born ca 1793 in VA, and married Elizabeth Swift.

II. Thomas Glaze was born ca 1760 in NC, and married Parmelia "Milly"
Frazier. These two ancestors are in the direct bloodline of Alexander
Deaton Haas & Zachary Deaton Haas. See above.

III. John Glaze was born ca 1758 in NC, married Elizabeth Smith and died
in 1820 in SC(?). There were several John Glaze's in NC, SC, and GA,
between 1760-1840. Our John Glaze served in the American Revolution from
NC. There was also a J.M. Glaze in Putnam Co., GA, in 1820, and another
in Lincoln Co., GA., in 1820. It would appear our John Glaze was in SC,
in 1820. It would appear our John Glaze signed an "Oath of Fidelity" in
NC, in 1778. He served as a private from Halifax Co., NC, in the
Revolutionary War. He was recorded as a "planter" in Halifax Co., in
1786. He is named in his father's LWT in 1781 in Granville Co., NC.
John moved to Lincoln Co., Ga before 1797 and lived there until 1801. He
evidently also served in the War of 1812 from GA. He moved to Putnam
Co., GA, ca 1820 and appears in the 1820 Putnam Co., census.

	CHILDREN OF JOHN GLAZE:

	A. Jonathan Glaze born ca 1790. His wife is unidentified. They
had six children but only "Jesse" is identified. "Jesse" was born ca 1824
in AL. in 1850 Jonathan was living in Union Parish, LA.

	B. Burnell Glaze.

	C. Granville Glaze was born after 1790. He was living in Madison
Co., AL, in 1830

 	D. Thomas Glaze was born 4-21-1794 in Lincoln Co., GA, and died
12-30-1873 in Dougherty Co., GA. He 1st married Tinnie Cullifer. She was
born after 1790 and died after 1830. He 2nd married Mary Cullifer who
died ca 10-1831. Thomas had five children but only Simeon Bowdin Glaze
had been identified. Simon was born ca 1812 in AL.

	E. Martha Glaze was born after 1794 and married John Hawkins.

	F. Sarah Glaze was born after 1794 and married Abraham Greeson.

IV. Sarah Glaze who married Thomas Bonds (Bond?).

V. Catherine Glaze who married Mr. Lewis Childs.

VI. Reuben Glaze was born ca 1760 in NC, and married "Elizabeth." He
died in 1843 in Oglethorpe Co., GA. He moved to Georgia after the
division of his father's estate in 1787. On 12-17-1791 Reuben purchased
land from John Meals of Augusta, GA, for 96 pounds. This was 287 acres
located in Washington Co., GA. Also in 1791 he had purchased 100 acres
of land in Wilkes Co., GA, and sold the same to a William Graves. This
land was on Soap Creek. On 11-8-1793 Reuben and Elizabeth Glaze sold 287
acres of land to William Hamilton of Greene Co.,, GA, for 75 pounds.
Greene Co., had formerly been part of Washington Co. On 8-3-1795 sold
200 acres to David Glaze for 75 pounds. This land was surveyed by a
certain George Wealton on 7-12-1787 and was located on the waters of the
Little River. On 1-27-1806 in Oglethorpe Co., GA, Reuben was witness to
the LWT of a Thomas Cullum. Reuben also took part in the Georgia land
lotteries of 1805 and 1827 of Oglethorpe Co. His LWT is dated 10-2-1834
(recorded Oglethorpe Co., Will Book D, p. 15). Note he mentions only
three of his children in the document.
State of Georgia, Oglethorpe County: In the name of God Amen. I
Reuben Glaze of the County and State aforesaid being of sound and
disposing mend and memory yet far advanced in age and desirous that death
should not remove me without having________disposed of my property. To
that the(?) portion I would to my daughter Matilda Edmondson had it been
her good fortune to have married a man to whose prudence and economy I
could have entrusted its management, may not fall into the hands of her
husband Richard Edmondson, do make and ordain this to be my last will and

and to allow each one equal share thereof and the share which under such
circumstances as I have intimated in the preamble of this my last will I
would have given to my son-in-law Richard Edmondson and which further

life time of my said daughter Matilda Edmondson adjudge and deem her in
distress and professing need of the whole or any part of the interest
which he may annually realize from the loan of said share to the support
and comfort of herself and her children. It is my will and desire and I
hereby direct and request him to appropriate on such contingency such
amount of said interest as he may deem requisite to her necessities and I
further will and direct that should my said daughter Matilda Edmondson
survive her said husband that upon that the whole said share to be given

but should her said husband survive her then upon the happening of her
death I give and bequeath the whole of said share in equal portions to

	CHILDREN OF REUBEN GLAZE:

	A. Joseph C. Glaze was born ca 1780 in GA, and married "Sarah C." Sarah was born ca 1795 in GA. In 1840, Joseph and family were living in Lumpkin Co., GA. By 1850 all there children were out of the house and the were living alone in Cherokee Co., Ga. As of the year 2000, Joseph's
	 children have not been identified.

	B. Reuben Glaze who was born ca 1801 in GA. He married "Angie" who was born ca 1803 in SC. This family appears in the 1880 census of Limestone Co., AL, living in HH 163. Living with Reuben and Angie are three grandchildren—Katie Glaze age 22, Clinton Glaze, age 21, and Della Glaze age 18. All three grandchildren were born in AL.

	B. An unidentified female who married Elam Willbanks. Mr. Willbanks was evidently much respected by Reuben Glaze.

	C. Matilda Glaze who married Richard Edmondson. Richard was considered by his father-in-law to be financially irresponsible. A Richard Edmondson, age 45, and born in SC, was living in Union Co., GA., in 1850 but he was married to a "Margaret," age 45. This man would appear to be our ancestor. Perhaps Matilda had died or perhaps her name was "Margaret Matilda?" This family could not be found in any census record after 1850.

		Children of Matilda Glaze Edmondson:
		1. Isabella Edmondson was born ca 1832 in GA.
		2. Hamilton Edmondson was born ca 1837 in GA.

My father was William Lawrence born in Texas in 1908." Only one of Thomas' children has been identified, namely, William N. Glaze born ca 1844 in TN. Lawrence B. Glaze was born in 1935 in TX. As of the year 2000 his E-mail address was "glaze@texanet.net".

VII. David Glaze was born 2-5- 1769 in Granville Co., NC. He married Susannah Norman 11-13-1798 in Lincoln Co., GA. Susannah was the daughter of William Norman and a Miss Shepherd. Susannah was born 3-9-1780 in Culpeper Co., VA, and died after 9-1857 in Lincoln Co., GA. . David would appear to have been one of BG's younger children. In 1787 he shared in the division of his father's estate. He is on record in Wilkes Co., GA., in 1791 when he sold some land in Granville Co., NC, which had been left to him by his father. By 1800 he was living in Lincoln Co., GA, with two slaves and 200 acres of land. His neighbors were the Norman and Davies families. By 1802 David had acquired another 100 acres. He appears in the 1803 Lincoln Co., Tax list. David was appointed joint administrator of the estate of Jesse Walker on 12-7-1814. Baldwin Robertson had married Jesse's widow and apparently was squandering her inheritance; hence, Peggy Robertson (formerly Mrs. Walker) along with David petitioned the court to investigate. As a result (David and Peggy) were appointed joint administrators. Peggy was David were siblings. David was a member of the historic Goshin Baptist Church, a few miles north of Lincolnton, GA. David served as the executor of the estate of Thomas Glaze. On 8-6-1806 he was witnessed to the LWT of Alexander Stinson of Lincoln Co., GA. On 4-5-1809 he witnessed a deed in Jones Co., GA. He evidently purchased land from a William Norman on 2-18-1806. He served on a grand jury in October of 1816 in Lincoln Co. He appears in the 1820 census of Lincoln Co., and was appointed justice of the peace of the inferior court of Lincoln Co., on 6-5-1819 and served until his death 11-16-1820. David died intestate. His estate was settled on 10-4-1825. His property was sold.

Family oral history suggests that Thomas had a twin brother who may have died in infancy. Thomas appears in the 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, & 1870 census of Lincoln Co., GA. He was witness to the LWT of a certain Sterne Simmons SR. He was in Habersham Co., GA, in 1820. He evidently purchased land from a Zachariah Sutton in Habersham Co., on 2-11-1826. Payton migrated from Georgia to Texas in 1855 via a wagon train. Payton evidently inherited three general stores from his father. He appears in the 1870 census of Cass Co., and is recorded as farming and owning real estate valued at $1000. After Payton died, Mary sold the general stores and bought a farm in Grayson Co., TX. Supposedly, the Story family was of Irish descent.

			Children of Payton Glaze:
			a. Payton Haws Glaze Jr., born in Linden, Cass Co., TX, and died in Grayson Co., TX. He married Alice Mae Elkins. She was born in Ga, and died 6-2-1936 in Grayson Co., TX. One family member described Payton as "a drunk." The following comes from William Howard Glaze and is dated 11-28-1997:
"I know little of Grandfather Glaze (Payton) except that he was an ‘itinerant painter, etc.,' leaving his family a lot. He still kept in close touch, however, because I was told that he came to get my father when he had left home. At age 15 or so to go to work in the oil fields of Fort Worth. There daddy worked driving a mule team, I think, but didn't stay long. I believe his mother sent his father to get him. >From there daddy evolved into a grocery business where he stayed for over forty years. Payton went from family member to family member, living with them after his wife passed away from cancer. I remember him because of the smell of very bad cigars that he smoked constantly. To say that he was tolerated is probably accurate."

				Children of Payton Glaze:
				(I) Homer Ray Glaze was born 10-23-1903 in Grayson Co., TX, and died 5-15-1980 in Dallas Co., TX. He married Leta Leota Scott. Children of Homer Glaze:
					(A) Mary Carol Glaze born 12-24-1932 in Sherman, TX. She first married John Robert Napier, Jr., on 12-9-1950 in Dallas, TX. John was born 11-2-1931 in Sullivan Island, SC, and died 9-17-1972 in Fort Worth, TX. He died of lung cancer. He was a "three pack a day" man. By occupation he was an electronics technician. She 2nd married Lawrence Royce Fralick on 7-12-1974 in Weatherford, TX. He died 7-7-1989 in Azle, TX. Lawrence was from Wisconsin and of German descent. The name "Fralick" apparently was an Anglicized variant of "Froelich." He entered World Was II at the age of 18 as an infantryman. He was wounded but not seriously. He was a bomber pilot in Korea and escaped without injury. He held a variety of jobs after retiring from the Army and ended his career in law enforcement. He died of prostate cancer. The following is from Dale Napier:
"John Napier, or Jack as he was known, was born on Sullivan's Island, a small island in Charleston Bay in SC. His brothers Pat and Jerry were born later when he was two and six respectively. His father served in the Army, and later Army Air Force during World War II, and his mother worked. They divorced in 1943. Jack and Pat lived in a Catholic boarding school with a military-style approach to raising the boys. They certainly lived a boy's life during this time. Pat was once shot accidently, a hunting accident perhaps–shot in the head! While Pat was recovering, Jack was forced into a boxing ring with the boy who had accidently shot Pat. They wouldn't let Jack out of the ring until he had beat the hell out of the boy, which is something he was not inclined to dol. With his parents divorced, after the wart Jack and Pat wandered between their parents–their father in SC, their mother in Los Angeles. Jack dropped out of school at 17 and joined the Air Force as an airman. While stationed at Carswell AFB in Fort Worth, he went on a blind date roller skating with Mary Carol Glaze. Carol was already engaged to another fellow at the time, but she went at some friend's urging. They hit it off well, but Jack was given orders to go overseas, to Rhinemein AFB in Germany. He and Carol decided to get married. Three days after the wedding, he left for Germany—and was gone two years! It is amazing that their marriage held together after that. When Jack returned from Germany, they had never lived together. But they did stay together, and had their first child, Robert Dale, in 1954. Their other children were Robin Carol, 1955, Sandy Gail, 1958, Patrice Diane, 1960, and Alice, 1962. Jack was re-stationed at Carswell until a month after Robin's birth. Then they moved to Springfield, MA, while he was stationed at Westover AFB. During that time he served as a mechanic on a flight crew, a DC-7C, at the service of a general. In 1962 he was sent to Keesler AFB in Biloxi, MI, for re-training as a microwave communications technician. After about ten months, he was assigned to Lejas AFB in the Azores, a small group of Islands 400 miles off the coast of Portugal. At Villa Nova, his work site off base, his microwave facilities were used for submarine underwater communications."

Co., GA, and by 1800 owned one slave and 75 acres of land in Lincoln Co.
Again with his brothers he participated in the 1807 Georgia land lottery
(Richmond Co.) But apparently never actually moved to Richmond Co. For
unspecified reasons he fell into disfavor with the church fathers of
the Goshin Baptist Church and was eventually expelled from the same. By

EPILOGUE:

Prior to the Civil War the Glaze's were a prosperous and prominent
southern family well established within the power structure of their
local communities. They were plantations owners. They owned slaves,
etc. Like most other prosperous plantation owners, they were destroyed
by the Civil War. A comparison of the 1860 and 1870 census records of
the South makes it abundantly clear what a horrific impact the Civil War
had on these people. The Glaze's may have been the most prominent and
prosperous of all of the ancestors of Alexander Deaton Haas Zachary
Deaton Haas; but without slaves their land was a burden to them. Then
came the carpetbaggers from the North. These folks were exploited
unmercifully and plunged into abject poverty. It should not have
happened!! Slavery was an evil that could not be tolerated but had you
or I been one of those plantation owners, we too would have fought to the
death to preserve our way of life. And we would have felt great
bitterness towards the North for taking our wealth away from us. And had
the North been a culture characterized by the use of slaves there would
have been no Civil War!!!
