The Decatur Guards was organized in Decatur County, Ga.
and left Bainbridge Aug. 13, 1861, to enter the Confederate States Army. The
company arrived at Atlanta, Ga. Aug. 15, 1861, where the 17th Ga. Regiment was
organized with Henry L. Benning as Colonel, and became Co. D, of this regiment.
The regiment was mustered into the Confederate service at Lynchburg, Va. Aug.
31, 1861.
There are no rolls of this company on file in Washington, D. C. prior to Jan.
1863.
