        Ruth Johnson Arnold, 81, of 205 E. Elm St. died Monday, Feb. 5,
     2001.
        A native of Hancock County, Mrs. Arnold was a daughter of the
     late Joseph Reed Johnson and Mary Elizabeth Roberts Johnson and was
     the widow of John Dewitt Arnold. She was preceded in death by a
     son, Wayne Strickland. She was a graduate of Sparta High School and
     was a retired nurse from Minnie G. Boswell Memorial Hospital where
     she worked for 30 years. She was a midwife with the Red Cross
     during World War II and was a member of the Professional Women's
     Club. She was a member of Greensboro First United Methodist Church.
        Services will be at 1 p.m. today at McCommons Funeral Home with
     the Rev. Richard Chewning officiating.
        Survivors include daughter, Opal Strickland Logue, Greensboro;
     sons, Earl J. Arnold, Greensboro, and John D. Arnold Jr.,
     Statesboro; grandchildren; one step-grandchild; and
     great-grandchildren.

        John C. Self, 85, of 28 Arthur Drive died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001.
        A native of White County, Mr. Self was a son of the late Homer
     and Ruth Canup Self. He was a retired barber and was of the Baptist
     faith.
        Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Evergreen Memorial Park,
     Athens, with the Revs. Elmer Butler and S.T. Graham officiating.
        Survivors include his wife, Jan Self; three sons, Bill Self,
     Vernon Self and Ray Self, all of Athens; a sister, Katherine
     Hammond, Watkinsville; four brothers, Will Self and Sam Self, both
     of Watkinsville, Coyt Self, Hull, and Wiley Self, Charlotte, N.C.;
     six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

     6, 2001.
        A native of Fairplay, N.C., Mrs. Compton was a daughter of the
     late Imers and Ruth Josephine Green Brady. She was preceded in
     death by a son, Mike Compton. She was a former employee of Quiet
     Oaks Nursing Home and was a member of Mount Pleasant Meeting House.
        Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lord and Stephens
     Oglethorpe Chapel with the Revs. Chuck Tatum and B.G. Miller
     officiating.
        Survivors include her husband, Howell Compton; two sons, Harry
     Paul Compton, Lexington, and Christopher Compton, Athens; a sister,
     Kathleen Brooks, Comer; five brothers, Tommy Brady, Greensboro,
     Larry Brady, Winterville, Bobby Brady, Lexington, Leo Brady and
     Calvin Brady, both of Greene County; and two grandchildren.

     was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of VFW and
     of the Bensenville, Ill. Masonic Lodge. He was a Scottish Rite
     Mason and was a Shriner.

     North Chapel, Demorest.
        Survivors include his wife, Susan D. Howard Neill; daughter,

        Evelyn Carr Smalley, 94, formerly of Elberton, died Monday, Feb.

        A native of Jewell, Mrs. Smalley was a daughter of the late
     William Pierce and Lucy Twilley Carr and was the widow of Robert H.
     Smalley.
        She was a member of Eliam United Methodist Church, Fortsonia.
        Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Eliam United Methodist
     Church with the Revs. Karl Hunter and Dan Rice officiating.
        Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park.

        Dan Allen Mathews, 87, of 7742 Yow Mill Road died Monday, Feb.
     5, 2001.
        A native of Stephens County, Mr. Mathews was a son of the late
     Edward Lee and Ethel Smith Mathews. He was a graduate of
     Eastanollee High School and of Athens Business College. He was a
     member of Toccoa First Baptist Church, where he was past chairman
     of the board of deacons, was honored as Man of the Year in 1995,
     and was chairman of the building committee. He was a 50-year Mason,
     served on the Salvation Army Board, the Stephens County Hospital
     Authority, the Welfare Board and was past president of the Toccoa
     Rotary Club. He was formerly employed by Judson Mills, Greenville,
     S.C. and by R.G. LeTourneau. He owned and operated a general
     merchandise business in Martin and Mathews Mortuary, now Whitlock
     Mortuary, until his retirement in 1969.
        Services will be at 3 p.m. today at Toccoa First Baptist Church
     with Dr. Henry Fields and Clarence Davis officiating.
        Survivors include his wife, Ruth Spearman Mathews; two
     daughters, Martha Jo Hunt, Toccoa, and Barbara Wall, Savannah;
     seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
        Memorials may be made to Toccoa First Baptist Church Chapel
     Fund, 601 E. Tugalo St., Toccoa, GA 30577.

        Arthur Keith Simonson, 80, of 21 Kelsey Drive died Monday, Feb.

        A native of Portage, Wis., Mr. Simonson was a son of the late
     Arthur Gordon Simonson and Katie Lenore Nelson Simonson. He was a
     carpenter and was a member of the Marine Corps Association and
     affiliated organizations. He was a U.S. Marine veteran of World War
     II, where he served as a captain in the 2nd Marine Division. He was
     of the Methodist faith.
        A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
        Survivors include two daughters, Carol Schauer, Thermopolis,
     Wyo. and Janet Simonson, Hartwell; a sister, Joann Kampen, Portage,
     Wis.; three grandsons; and three great-granddaughters.

     an elementary school teacher and taught in Georgia, South Carolina
     and Florida. She was a graduate of the University of Georgia and
     was a member of Gonzalez Baptist Church, Gonzalez, Fla.

     Greensboro, with the Rev. Jimmy A. Long officiating.
        Survivors include a daughter, Rhonda Ruark Stephens,
     Sandersville; a sister, Margie Lanier, Tampa, Fla.; and six

     and was a member of Bogart United Methodist Church.
        Funeral services will be at Wednesday, February 7, 2001 at 2:00
     PM at Lord and Stephens Chapel, West. Interment will be in
     Evergreen Memorial Park.
        Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Survivors include his wife,
     Jewell Gunter; Daughter and son in law, Debbie and Ronnie Howard of
     Athens; 4 sons and daughters in law, Eddy and Elaine Gunter, Mike
     and Sherry Gunter, Randy and Penni Gunter and Toby and Ginger

     nephews.

     Gladys Adams Hall. He was retired from GMAC with thirty-five years
     employment and was later employed as Lease Manager with Pontiac
     Master, Augusta. He was a WWII veteran of the United States Navy
     and was a member of Cherokee Corner Methodist Church.
        Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 8, 2001, at
     11:00 AM at Lord and Stephens Oglethorpe Chapel. Revs. James
     Hinzman and O.C. Dean will officiate. Interment will be in Sunset
     Cemetery, Maxeys.
        Survivors include his wife, Claire Hall; daughters, Deborah H.
     Loftiss of Thomasville, and Barbara H. Ashley of North Augusta, SC;
     son and daughter in law, William Russell and Sarah R. Hall of
     Macon; brother, Farrell A. Hall of Lake Oconee; three
     granddaughters, Allison and Emily Loftiss, and Rosemary Hall.

     William Dawkins, and Vincent Smith.

     will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in the
     church cemetery.

     Olivia Fortson, Comer; a son, Brian Keith Akins, Athens; two
