        Doyle Jarrett, 70, of 260 Valleybrook Drive died Wednesday, Jan.
     3, 2001.
        A native of Madison County, Mr. Jarrett was a son of the late
     Reba and Elise Jarrett and was the widower of Susie Arnold Jarrett.
     He was retired from the University of Georgia and was a former
     supervisor at the Varsity. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was a
     member of Cleveland Road Baptist Church.
        Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cleveland Road Baptist
     Church with the Rev. Bob Nash officiating.
        Survivors include a stepdaughter, Linda Jo Gunter, Athens; a
     step-grandchild; a step-great-grandchild; nieces and nephews.

        Belton R. Phillips, 66, of 379 Fred King Road died Wednesday,
     Jan. 3, 2001.
        A native of Franklin County, Mr. Phillips was a son of the late
     Dillard Phillips and Mozelle James Phillips. He was owner and
     operator of Phillips Appliance Service for 32 years. He was a
     member of Mount Olivet Baptist Church and attended Mount Olivet
     Church of God.
        Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mount Olivet Church of
     God with the Revs. Wayne Durden, Keith Reid, Joe Black and Howard
     Strickland officiating. The body will be placed in the church at
     2:30 p.m. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Baptist Church cemetery.
        Survivors include his wife, Shelby Jean King Phillips; a
     daughter, Penney Whiting, Hartwell; two sons, Randy Phillips,
     Toccoa, and Darrin Phillips, Hartwell; three sisters, Sue Minish,
     Royston, Louise Dudley and Gail Strickland, both of Commerce; four
     brothers, Thomas Phillips and Utah Phillips, both of Royston, Danny

        Willie ''Sampson'' James Mitchell, 52, died Monday, Jan. 1,
     2001.
        A native of Greene County, Mr. Mitchell was a son of the late
     Joe and Ruthie Mae Fluellen Mitchell. He received his education
     from the Greene County School System and was a retired brick mason.
        Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Watts Funeral
     Home, Union Point.
        Survivors include a son, Edward L. Brown, Atlanta; four sisters,
     Mamie Giles and Mary Ann Johnson, both of Greensboro, Eartha K.

     Harrison Thomas and Ezzie Hunsinger Jones. He was preceded in death
     by a son, Michael Thomas Jones. He was an auto mechanic and was a
     member of Macedonia Congregational Holiness Church.

     Holiness Church with the Rev. James Creason officiating.
        Survivors include his wife, Ethelene Bridges Jones; a son, James

        A native of Elbert County, Mrs. Van Hoof was a daughter of the
     late Henry and Everlina Smith Caldwell and was the widow of
     Frederik Van Hoof.
        She was preceded in death by a son, Henry Van Hoof. She was a
     retired salesperson from Rich's Department Store, Atlanta, and was
     a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Decatur.
        Services will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church
     with Father Phillip Ryan officiating. Burial will be in Forest
     Hills Memorial Park.
        Survivors include three daughters, Connie Holcomb,
     Lawrenceville, Adriana Dold, Boston, and Marie Van Hoof, Chamblee;
     a sister, Ethel C. Hunt, Elberton; and five grandchildren.

        Horace Montgomery, 95, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001.
        A native of Derrick City, Pa., Mr. Montgomery was the widower of
     Gladys Anderson Montgomery. He attended Pennsylvania public schools
     and graduated from Ohio Northern University. He received his master
     of arts degree and his Ph.D. from the University of Georgia. The
     later degree was the first doctorate granted by UGA. He was a U.S.
     Navy veteran of World War II and taught in the UGA Department of
     History from 1947-1978. He was a Fulbright Professor at the
     University of Innsbruck, Innsbruck, Austria, in 1960.
        Memorial services will be announced at a later date.
        Survivors include a son, Dr. Thomas A. Montgomery, Athens; five
     grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

        Mrs. Autry was a daughter of the late Bert and Nora Mauldin and

        She was retired as a sewing machine operator and inspector for
     Empire Manufacturing. She was a member of Bethlehem First United
     Methodist Church and Bethlehem Homemakers Club.
        Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Bethlehem First United
     Methodist Church with the Revs. Jay Tinney, Jody Hice, Mike Peavy
     and Don Pennington officiating. The body will be placed in the
     church at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

        Mamie Faye O'Neal Massey, 93, of 501 S. Main St. died Thursday,

        A lifelong resident of Greene County, Mrs. Massey was a daughter
     of the late Ed Lilton O'Neal and Abbie Olivia Copelan O'Neal and
     was the widow of Frank Noah Massey.
        She was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Higdon, and by
     two sons, Billy Massey and Eugene Massey. She was a charter member
     of Bethel Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
        Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Bethel Baptist Church,
     Union Point, with the Revs. Colin Duncan and Daniel Bowen
     officiating. Burial will be in Greensboro City Cemetery.
        Survivors include three daughters, Betty Deckard, Elizabethtown,
     Ky., Elizabeth Swann, Lexington, S.C., and Anne Bills, Morrow; four
     sons, Bobby Massey, Greensboro, Nelson Massey, Conyers, Marvin
     Massey, Hampton, and Cecil Massey, Centerville; 27 grandchildren;
     and 45 great-grandchildren.

        Leonard Guy Hopkins Jr., 79, of 145 Cheatham Drive died

        A native of Madison County, Mr. Hopkins was a son of the late
     Leonard Guy Sr. and Lula Tolbert Hopkins. He was preceded in death
     by a daughter, Martha Ann Hopkins, and by a son, Wayne Hopkins. He
     was a carpenter for Puritan-Wellington, was a U.S. Army veteran of
     World War II and was a member of Edwards Chapel Baptist Church.

        Survivors include his wife, Martha Potter Hopkins; a son, Ronnie

     Baptist Church, where he served on the deacon board. He was a
     former member of Booker Chapel Baptist Church, Washington, and
     served in the U.S. Army for more than 20 years.
        Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Calvary Baptist
     Church with the Rev. Grady Lawrence officiating. The body will be
     place in the church at 11 a.m.
        Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Hallena
     Hall; four daughters, Jo Ann Wright, Riverdale, Vera Rhodes and
     Regina Price, both of Union Point, and Deborah Willis, Athens; a

        He was the son of the late Jeremiah and Lola Addington Booth.
     Mr. Booth was the widower of Nobie Jones Booth and is preceded in

     Booth Brown of Miami, Fla. He was a farmer and
     carpenter/contractor.

        Mrs Louise Tumlin Owensby age 83 of 106 Maddoxwood Dr. Griffin,
     GA formerly of Commerce, GA died January 3, 2001 at Southland
     Nursing Home. Mrs Owensby was a graduate of Young Harris College
     and the University of Georgia. She earned her Masters Degree in
     counseling from the University of Georgia in the 1960's and was the
     only counselor at Commerce High School until her retirement in
     1985. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of
     Commerce, also a member of many civic groups. Mrs Owensby moved to
     Griffin in 1993. She attended First United Methodist Church of
     Griffin and was active in the Senior Citizens Organization, First
     Friends, and Pink Ladies at Spalding Regional Hospital. She was a
     native of Forsyth County Georgia. She was the daughter of the late
     Candler and Isabella Tumlin and the wife of the late Dr William A.
     Owensby. She was preceded in death by a son Charles William Owensby
     and a sister Emma Lee Orr.
        Survivors are children John and Evelyn McGavin, Griffin. James
     (Jim) and Deborah Owensby, Douglasville. Grandchildren; Erin,
     Andrea and Jonathan McGavin all of Griffin. Meridith and Matthew
     Owensby, Douglasville. Sister: Virginia Martin, Tucker.
     Sister-in-law brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Robinson,
     Carrollton, Many nieces and nephews.
        Funeral services will be at 2PM Saturday January 6, 2001 from
     the Chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home with Rev Sam Storey
