     Mower Sales and Service, Decatur. He was a member of Carl Baptist

        A native of Stephens County, Mr. Bryant was a son of Robert and
     Dorothy Payne Bryant. He was a disabled U.S. Army veteran and was
     employed as a counselor in the VA regional office.

     cemetery.

     Gene Edwin Evans, 55, of 7221 Highway 181 South died Wednesday,
     Dec. 1, 1999.
        A native of Bowman, Mr. Evans was a son of the late Issac Thomas
     and Mazelle Scoggins Evans. He was preceded in death by a son, Gary
     V. Evans. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church,
     Hartwell, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. He was
     retired from the granite industry.
        Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Berry Funeral Home,
     Elberton, with Father Terence Kane officiating. Burial will be in

     Post, where he was past commander. He was a member of Atlanta

     Barrow County Council on Aging and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World

     AARP and Happy Trails Art Club.

     Thomas Textile for a total of 35 years. She was a member of Mount

     Jim and Susie Maxwell Dyar and was the widow of Johnny Alewine. She
     was a homemaker and was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church.

     Mrs. Helen Stroud Stewart, 92, of Cornelia, Georgia, passed away on
     Wednesday, December 1, 1999, at home following an extended illness.
        The daughter of the late James Frank Stroud, Sr. and Lenora Duke
     Gulledge Stroud, she was born in Union Springs, Alabama, on
     November 6, 1907, but had lived in Cornelia since 1945.
        The late Milton and Helen Stewart purchased Standard Telephone
     Company in 1939 and were pioneers in the development of the
     company. She served on the Board of Directors of Standard Telephone
     Company for many years.
        Mrs. Stewart was widely known throughout the state of Georgia
     for her work with the Chamber of Commerce. She served as Executive
     Secretary of the Cornelia Chamber of Commerce from 1948 to 1965.
     She graduated in 1952 from the Southeastern Institute for Chamber
     of Commerce Executives at the University of North Carolina and
     later returned as a member of the faculty, teaching civic affairs.
     A room is named in her honor at the Habersham County Chamber of
     Commerce office.
        She was the first woman to serve on the Board of Trustees for
     Cornelia Schools; the first woman to serve on the Grand Jury in
     Habersham County and one of the first women to serve on the
     Traverse Jury. The Cornelia Kiwanis Club honored her by making her
     the first female member of the club. Mrs. Stewart was the pianist
     for the Kiwanis Club for 25 years. She was a charter president of
     the Cornelia Womens Club and a member of the Cornelia Three Arts
     Club. She was a long-term member of the Cornelia United Methodist
     Church.
        Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Kay Stewart and
     Dean C. Swanson of Cornelia; one son and daughter-in-law, H. Milton
     and Carolyn J. Stewart, Jr. of Lecanto, Fla.; five grandchildren
     and seven great-grandchildren.
        Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December
     3, 1999, at the Cornelia Methodist Church with Dr. Robert Brown,
     Revs. Bob Ramsey, Marcus Martin and Richard Scoggins officiating.
     The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 2, from 5:00
     p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Interment will be in the Yonah Memorial Gardens.

     Sarah Kathleen Wilson, 86, of 68 Charlie Bolton Road, Hull, Georgia
     departed this life for her Homegoing to be with her Heavenly Father
     November 30, 1999.
        She was a native of Madison County, Georgia and was the daughter
     of the late Allie N. Spratlin and Susie Belle Williams Spratlin.
        She now resides with her late husband, James Hoyt Wilson; her
     daughter, Shirley Ann Wilson Perry; her grandson, Master J. Kevin
     Wilson; and her only sibling, Allena Spratlin Carithers in their
     Heavenly Home who preceded her in death.
        Mrs. Wilson will long be remembered by those she taught so
     faithfully for over 30 years in the 4&5 Year Old Sunday School
     Class of Hull Baptist Church where she was a member and served her
     Lord so willingly.
        Survivors include her son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter:
     Altrin, Janice and Mandy Wilson, all of Watkinsville, Georgia; her
     daughter, son-in-law: Carlene W. & Bobby Clements of Comer,
     Georgia; their children, Carla C. & Marc Patterson; Cory, Tracy and
     Little J.R. Clements; Christa Lewis and Little Chase Burdette, all
     of Comer.
        The children and grandchildren of her late daughter, Shirley Ann
     are: Mike & Robin Perry; Wilson, Ann Kennedy and Dottie Jeanne
     Perry, Alpharetta, Georgia; Cindy P. Nelms, Colbert; Shaun Nelms,
     Athens; Megan P., James and Nikki McCart, Greensboro, Georgia;
     Susan P., Timmy and Little Trevor Evans of Milledgeville, Georgia.
        Her extended family members are Judy and Jack Hardman and
     residents of White Dove Personal Care Home where she had resided
     for a couple of years.
        Services will be Thursday at 2:00 PM at Hull Baptist Church with
     pastor, Rev. Randy Crowe officiating. Interment will be in the Hull
     Baptist Cemetery.
        Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, East, is in charge of

                            Dr. Kenneth Coleman

     Dr. Kenneth Coleman, 83, of 220 Dearing Street, Athens died
     Saturday, November 28, 1999.
        Dr. Coleman, son of the late John Amoss and Magnolia Lee Coleman
     was born in Devereaux, Georgia (Hancock County) April 28, 1916. He
     was a graduate of Boys High Atlanta, received his A.B. and M.A.
     degrees from the University of Georgia (1939-1940) and his Ph.D. in
     History from the University of Wisconsin in 1953.
        He was an officer in the United States Army in Europe during
     World War II.
        Dr. Coleman taught high school briefly in Atlanta before serving
     on the faculty of what was then the Atlanta Division of the
     University of Georgia in Atlanta (now Georgia State University). He
     joined the history faculty at Athens in 1955. He retired in 1976 as
     Professor of History at the University of Georgia in Athens.
        Coleman was the author of several important volumes of Georgia
     history including The American Revolution in Georgia, Georgia
     Journeys, Confederate Athens and Georgia History in Outline, one of
     the University of Georgia Press's all time best sellers. When he
     was governor of Georgia Jimmy Carter invited Coleman to head up the
     publication of A History of Georgia which was published during
     Carter's Presidential administration (1977). Coleman shared its
     authorship with several colleagues in the History Department of the
     University of Georgia. Coleman was co-editor with Charles Stephen
     Gurr of The Dictionary of Georgia Biography (1983).
        He was a long-time member of the Georgia Historical Society,
     where he served several terms as a curator; the Athens Historical
     Society; and The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservations along
     with numerous other professional historical associations. He was a
     life-time member of the Southern Historical Association. Coleman
     was a recipient of the Georgia Humanities Award during Governor
     Zell Miller's administration.
        Dr. Coleman was a devotee of Georgia, of Athens, of the
     University of Georgia, of Thomas Jefferson and the 18th century. He
     was a long-time good neighbor on Dearing Street where he resided in
     his beloved ''Young Harris House.'' All these benefited from his
     time and devotion.
        He is survived by his sister-in-law, Alberta Nelson Coleman, of
     Lexington, Ky. and two nieces, Nancy L. Coleman of Brumunddal,
     Norway, and Martha Coleman Staff of Honolulu, Hawaii.
        Bernstein's Funeral Home in Athens is in charge of arrangements.
        There will be a service at St. Stephens Anglican Church on
     Friday at 10:00 a.m. with The Right Rev. Mark Haverland
     officiating. A private interment will follow near Devereaux.
        In lieu of flowers contributions in Dr. Coleman's memory may be
     made to the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation, The Athens
     Historical Society the Hargret Library (Georgia collections) of the
     University of Georgia or St. Stephen's Anglican Church, Athens.

     6-8pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made
