July 30, 1822 Georgian (Savannah, GA) INDIAN CLAIMS. Executive Department,
Geo Milledgeville, 13th July, 1822. The Executive having received the first
instalment on the claims allowed under the late treaty with the Creek Indians,
with a list from the War Department of the names of the claimants, and the
amount allowed to each, one-fifth part of which (the amount received) will be
paid to those entitled to receive it, on application to Maj. Elisha Wood, at
this office, agreeable to said list, which is ordered to be published in the
Georgia Journal, for the information of those concerned. In all cases where
the original claimant is dead, the heirs and representatives will be required
to produce their authority for receiving the money. The Executive cannot
refrain from expressing his regret at perceiving so many of the claimants
deprived of what he conceives to be their just rights, for the want of the
requisite proof in support of their claims. He, however, entertains a hope
that this subject may again be taken up, and further time allowed for
exhibiting the formal proof, so as to afford to those who have not
substantiated their claims by the proof required, an opportunity of doing so.
(Attest,) JOHN BURCH. S.E.D. Statement of claims allowed by the
Commissioner appointed by the President of the United States, under the 4th
article of the treaty concluded with the Creek Nation, on the 8th day of
January, 1821, to ascertain the balance that may be due by the Creek Nation to
the citizens of the State of Georgia, agreeable to the said article of treaty
and the agreement between the Commissioners of Georgia and the Creek Nation.
