SMITH, G. L., MRS. - Aged 35, died at her home Wednesday. She lived on the
Yantis road near the Cross Roads. Burial was made in the Liberty cemetery. Her
husband, G. L. (Doc) Smith, was arrested for the death of his wife. He had given
her strychnine. (Gazette, Fri., May 7, 1915) Cumby Rustler reported - The
attending physician was of the opinion that she died from poison. Reports have
been filed very damaging to the husband. One is that when informed by Constable
Bill Baylis that he was wanted by the officials at the graveyard to exhume the
body of his wife, he cut his throat, also tried to butt his brains out against a
fence post, fracturing his skull. It is also rumored and freely talked that Mr.
Smith carried $4000. insurance on his wife. Sheriff Butler informed the Rustler
her stomach had been sent to Dallas to be analyzed. (S.S. Gazette)
