Sylvi H. (Forss) Smith

Sylvi H. (Forss) Smith died at home in Berkeley on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at
the age of 86.

Ms. Smith worked most of her adult life at cutter labs and various cannery's as
a floor-lady or assistant superintendent at times. According to her family she
enjoyed masquerades. She won many awards for her creative costumes.

She also loved to travel, enjoying trips to Finland to meet relatives for the
first time. She especially loved fishing and camping trips to Texas and Illinois
with her family. She loved casinos and cruise ships but was equally at home in
her flower garden with her doxie Rosie.

Ms. Smith is survived by daughters Patty Hansen Tucker, Molly Falgout; son
Michael McCauley and spouses; 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Arti Bird McCauley, son Dennis J.
McCauley; her parents Oscar and Martha Hendrickson and her father Waino Forss;
all natives of Finland.

Ms. Smith was preceded in death by her husband of 12 years, Tom Smith.

She was an active member of his union I.L.W.U. local 6. According to her family
she believed strongly in unions and what they stand for, in the way of
protecting worker's rights. She was elected to the executive board in the 1980s.

A memorial service is scheduled on Friday, March 8, 2002 at 1 p.m. at Sunset
View Corners of Fairmount and Colusa streets in El Cerrito.
