07/02/31 LOGAN E. A. UNKNOWN Jesse Aycock has re-opened Logan's Palace on
Broadway changing name to Aycock's Palace. The place had been closed due to the death of E.A.Logan.
07/02/31 Al Benton opens new cafe here, Al's Place, he had a restaurant here earlier that
was very popular due to the superior barbecue sandwiches, he later operated the Skipper in the
1950's!
07/02/31 Route 70 East is progressing, and may be open in time for the Peach Festival, About
three more miles in St.Francis county need to be paved between Shell Lake and Blackfish Lake. The
concrete paving of the Forrest City to Madison route is expected to be finished this week. Then they
will move west of the Cranor service station and complete the section to the completed Palestine
road. 07/23/31 All of Memphis to Madison concrete highway 70 is completed!
07/02/31 Mrs.J.G.Sanders left for Rosedale, Calif. to visit her daughter and family, Mrs.Anna
Clay Wylds, and her brother, Paul Fiber.
07/02/31 LaVogue Beauty Parlor reports business is good, so says Mrs.Robert Myers, owner.
07/09/31 Third annual Peach Festival moved to July 30 when the harvest is expected to be at
peak then. Miss Montine McDaniel is selected as the Princess, and her Maids are:from St.Francis
County:Misses Margaret Eldridge, Margaret Dean, and Eleanor McCown; Miss Blanche Butler from
Madison, Miss Madeline Smith from Wheatley; and one from Hughes not named as of yet. Also attending,
are the Queens of 1929, Miss Elizabeth Fussell of St.Francis Co., and 1930, Miss Eva Metz of
Harrisburg.
07/09/31 Marion Hotel has new manager, Mrs.M.Reeder replacing Mr.A.B.Pyle, resigned. Harry
Reeder, Mrs.Reeder's son will be the new night manager. District supervisor of Rock Island hotels,
W.G.Cornell, was in Forrest City yesterday checking in the new manager.
07/16/31 Vaccaro to open new sub-division in the western part of the city north of Hwy 70,
consisting of 25 acres and 100 lots.
07/16/31 July 4th 100 years ago in St.Francis County, per the Arkansas Gazette: Celebration
in the town of Franklin by a number of St.Francis county citizens, and a public dinner given, John
Johnson presided as President, Spencer Crough Esq. as Vice President, and Dr.N.B.Clopton as
Secretary. The Declaration of Independence was read by G.B.Lincecum, Esq., and an appropriate
oration was read by Col. John W.Calvert. A number of appropriate toast were made.

07/23/31 Mrs.J.J.Smith, mother of Mrs.A.L.Hutchins with whom she makes her home, celebrates

the Univ.of Arkansas, where she met her husband. Mr.Bagby's home is in Lake Village, but he is in
business in Fayetteville before coming to Forrest City, and is a graduate of the Univ.of Arkansas.

ten months and was connected with the state conservation department. Funeral services were conducted

Rev.Watson. Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by four brothers, Norman Johnson of Chicago;
Roy Johnson of Clarendon; Ewan Johnson of LIttle Rock; and Julian Johnson of Monroe, La.

hospital in Memphis yesterday afternoon, July 22,1931, following an operation for gall stones. The

with interment in Wylds cemetery. Deceased was a native of St.Francis county, and enjoyed a wide
acquaintance ship throughout the county. He is survived by two brothers, Dan T. and Rodney Wylds of

Baptist hospital in Memphis Saturday, July 18,1931. Funeral services were held at the family home

at Caldwell. Interment was had in Hughes cemetery. Besides her husband, deceased is survived by her

08/06/31 VOGEL HERBERT W. 7 5 1897 7 30 1931 CITY Herbert W.Vogel, aged 34 years, and 25
days, publisher of the Marked Tree Tribune dies suddenly in Marked Tree from heart attack last
Thursday afternoon, Aug.30,1931. Mr.Vogel had just completed the day's work, and had gone for the
mail. He dropped dead in the corridors of the Post Office. Mrs.Vogel had left him at the office a
few minutes earlier, and states that he had been in a cheerful mood during the day but had an
unusually hard day of work, it being press day. Mr.Vogel had returned only a few weeks ago from the
hospital at Legion, Texas, where he underwent treatment, not having been in the best of physical
condition for sometime, but no one believed he was so near the end. The remains were brought to
Forrest City and funeral services were held here Friday afternoon, from the residence of his brother
in law, Jeff Downey, with interment in the Forrest City cemetery. He was given a military funeral,
with pall bearers: Chas.Gray, W.A.Briening, C.C.Perry, Ed Franks, Lee B.Horton, W.A.Culley of the
local post of the American Legion. Services were conducted by Rev.Lester Weaver of the First
Methodist church of Marked Tree, assisted by Rev.E.Rawlings of this city. He is survived by his
widow and two children, Herbert W.Jr. and Willa Mae; four sisters, Mrs.Walter Reaves, Mrs.Albert
Jones, Mrs.Willaim Copleland, and Miss Louise Vogel of Memphis, and one brother, Charles of
Cleveland, Miss. Mr.Vogel was a native of Forrest City, and spent the greater part of his life in
the employ of The Forrest City Times and Times-Herald, being foreman of the composing room from
April 1919 to December 1930, when he resigned to take the Marked Tree Tribune the first of January.
Deceased was a veteran of the World War, enlisting immediately following this country's entry into
the war. He was a man of many admirable traits of character, among which were loyalty to country,
family, and friends; strict integrity and truthfulness.

08/13/31 GRADY ROBERT 1901 8 9 1931 HUGHES The body of Robert Grady, 30, farmer of Caldwell,
was found lying on the Missouri Pacific Railroad tracks two miles north of Forrest City early Sunday
morning, Aug.9,1931. The body was discovered by a negro walking along the track. He immediately
notified Donald Magness, who lives nearby. The body was badly mangled, and it was with considerable
difficulty that identification was made. At the coroner's inquest, a verdict was returned that he
came to his death by being struck by a Missouri Pacific train. Dr.P.P.Boggan said there were some
wounds on the body that resembled knife wounds, but it could not be established if this was cause of
the death. Reports that three men were drinking and quarreling Saturday night about a half mile from
the scene of the tragedy. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, with burial in Hughes
cemetery. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his mother, Mrs.M.Grady of Caldwell; two
brothers, Ollie Grady of Hickory Ridge and Tom Grady of Parkin; two sisters, Mrs.Fred Satterfield of
Caldwell, and one in Texas.

shooting Mrs.Moody in her home. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Stevens Funeral

in the family cemetery, at Hunter. Deceased is survived by her widower, Clarke Moody, her mother,

08/13/31 BLACK WILL UNK 8 1930 UNKNOWN Buster Littel, 22, under arrest on Tuesday by Night
Marshall John Cargill, on a charge of selling liquor. He was arrested last year in August along with
Ed and Robert Franks in connection with the death of Will Black. The grand jury returned a verdict
of first degree murder against the three, and the men have been at liberty since then.

Mr.and Mrs.Jerry Jayroe died Tuesday, Aug.16,1931 at the family residence two miles west of

pastor of First Christian Church, Forrest City, at grave side in Bell cemetery, north of Palestine.

Johnson is in jail charged with having killed Major Burk, another negro, about July 12,1931,on the
Alderson place near Lakeside. Burk was knocked in the head with a hoe following an argument, and
died two weeks later in a Memphis hospital.
08/20/31 P'POOL DELIA MRS GRINER 1852 8 13 1931 CITY Mrs.Delia Griner P'Pool passed away
Thursday afternoon, Aug.13,1931, at the home of her daughter, Mrs.J.E.Griner, on North Washington
Street. Mrs.P'Pool was the youngest of ten children of Mr.and Mrs.R.E.Griner of Centreville, Tenn.,
and was born in 1852. In 1876 she was married to Dr.E.J.P'Pool. Shortly after, they located at
Newport, Ark., where she joined the Christian church. In 1896, they moved to Forrest City and here
led a life of usefulness. Dr.P'Pool preceded her in death 16 years ago. Deceased had been a patient
invalid for several years. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs.J.E.Griner, and two grandsons,
J.E.P. and W.D.Griner. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Christian church,
conducted by Rev.J.C.Fleshman of the Christian church, and Rev.J.T.Willcoxon, pastor of the
Methodist church. Burial was made in Forrest City Cemetery.

Baptist hospital in Memphis Friday afternoon, Aug.14,1931, following an illness of about three

of the Eastern Star, of which Mrs.Lee was a member, holding their service at this time. The body was
brought to Forrest City for burial Saturday afternoon, with interment at Hughes cemetery, north of
the city. Mrs.Lee had been living in Memphis for the past five years, being employed at
Lowenstein's. Her husband Henry Forrest Lee, preceded her in death about six years ago, at the age
of 35. She is survived by three children, Henry, age 13, Charles, age 10, and Wava Margaret, 7,
mother, Mrs.Anna C.Fletcher; three sisters, Mrs.Alma Garner, and Mrs.H.P.Williams, of Memphis, and
Mrs.John Farr of Wynne; and two brothers, W.C.Fletcher and J.H.Fletcher of Forrest City.

ceremony, assisted by Rev.Shell, pastor of the Methodist church at Colt, burial was in the Hughes
cemetery. The child was drowned shortly after lunch Saturday, Aug.22,1931, when it fell into a ten
gallon tub containing about 3 gallons of water at the home of Mrs.L.A.Clark on the old John
Littlefield place seven miles north of Forrest City. Deceased is survived by parents and one
brother, Charles Jr.
09/03/31 BARNES G. S. UNK 8 28 1931 UNKNOWN G.S.Barnes, formerly of this city but for the
past seven years living at Blytheville, was killed last Friday night, Aug.28,1931, by the Frisco
train at Gilmore. Mr.Barnes was riding alone in his auto and was killed instantly, the body being
badly mangled. During his residence of several years here he operated the ice plant and also engaged
in the manufacture of ice cream. He had been engaged in ice cream manufacture for the past few
years, being manager for Mid-West Ice Cream Co., operating several plants in Arkansas and Missouri.
He had been a frequent visitor here and had a number of friends who were shocked to hear of his
death.

Ark.-Sep.29-Ross Nicholson, age 48, Twist plantation manager, died last night, Sep.28,1931, the
victim of a bullet accidentally fired by his best friend, Bob Williams, deputy sheriff. Nicholson
was shot in the heart when Williams struck Gay Doolin on the head with his automatic, the gun
discharging and striking Nicholson. Williams said today that when questioned, Doolin admitted
enticing negro cotton pickers away from the Twist plantation. When commanded to raise his hands,
Doolin reached for his hip pocket, and Williams struck him with the barrel of the automatic. No
charge will be made against the deputy, other officers said today. Doolin was warned to stay away
from Twist. The funeral services were held in the Methodist church of Osceola Wednesday afternoon.
Mr.Nicholson leaves a wife, and two children, Jane and Ross, Jr. Mrs.Nicholson was formerly Miss
Addie Ragland of Forrest City, the daughter of Mr.and Mrs.Ellis Ragland of Forrest City.
10/15/31 SATTERFIELD FRANCIS MARION SR 2 18 1866 10 14 1931 HUGHES Francis Marion
Satterfield, Sr., age 65 years, familiarly known to hundreds of friends as "Blue" passed away at his
home on East Arkansas Ave. here Wednesday afternoon, Oct.14,1931. Mr.Satterfield had been confined
to his bed for the past five months, but his condition did not become critical until a few days ago.
Mr.Satterfield was born Feb.18,1866 and spent practically his entire life in St.Francis county,
during which time he formed many strong friendships, and his passing will be genuinely regretted by
all who with whom he was associated. He spent the early years of his life farming, and later entered
the insurance business in Eastern Arkansas territory, where he was very successful. He was a devout
Christian gentleman and a devoted church worker in the community in which he lived. He was an Elder
in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Good Hope for 35 years; and a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge,
and the W.O.W. fraternal organization. Funeral services in charge of W.E.Stevens & Co. are being
conducted today at Good Hope church, six miles north of the city, with interment in the family
burial plot at Hughes cemetery. Rev.James Willcoxon, pastor of the First Methodist Church here
conducting the ceremony. Deceased is survived by his wife, Mrs.Dora Fisher Satterfield; five sons,
Lee, Otto, Marion, James Harvey, and Lewis, all of Forrest City; one daughter, Mrs.Chas.Royer of

10/15/31 PIERCE WINSTED 1908 10 12 1931 UNKNOWN Funeral services for Winsted Pierce, 23,
formerly of Forrest City, were conducted Tuesday at the M.E.Church in Brinkley, with burial in the
cemetery there. Pierce died at Clarksdale, Miss. hospital Monday, Oct.12,1931, from a bullet wound
received when he was fired upon from a negro cabin near Farrel, Miss., Sunday. Pierce, according to
W.F.Boyd, deputy sheriff, went to the home of Sam Douglas and his 14 year old son in an effort to
collect $18 which he alleged was stolen from Roy Collier, a friend, by Douglas, Pierce told the
officers before his death, that he asked Douglas to come out on the porch and that shots followed,
one striking him in the back, inflicting a mortal wound. Douglas and his son, tenants on the
R.M.McWilliams place, were arrested and are held in the Clarksdale jail, charged with the crime. The
son of Douglas said that Pierce attempted to walk in the house and threatened the entire family, and
the youth being home alone shot out the window to scare him away. Pierce was employed with the
Anderson-Tully Const.Co. of Memphis, and had lived in Forrest City with his older brother,
C.R.Pierce, who was the ticket agent at Union Station in Forrest City. In addition to his brother of
Brinkley, he is survived by a brother, Earl Pierce, who is stationed in San Pedro, Calif. with the
Navy; another brother, Ewell, of Tulsa, Okla.; two sisters, Mrs.H.T.Reed of Eldorado, Ark., and
Mrs.H.A.Gossett of Hot Springs, and his mother, Mrs.C.D.Pierce who lives in Forrest City. 10/22/31

10/15/31 BRODIE MARY LOUISE MRS 1850 10 6 1931 OLD After a long and honored life, Mrs.Mary
Louise Brodie, widow of Mr.H.S.Brodie, peacefully passed to her award in Ripley Tuesday night, she
had been ill only a few days and many of her friends knew nothing of her illness until the sad news
came that this good lady answered the last summons. Mrs.Brodie was a splendid Christian woman,
gentle, kind and considerate, and greatly endeared herself to all who were privileged to touch her
life. She reached the ripe old age of 81 years, all of which were spent in Ripley, Tenn. and the
county. She was a daughter of B.A.Sinclair, one of Ripley's best loved and prominent in shaping the
destiny of our city. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs.W.H.Baynes and Miss Janie Brodie of
Ripley, and Mrs.James Alley of Forrest City, Ark. On son, Lucian Brodie, preceded her in death a few
years ago. Two sisters also survive, Mrs.Chas.Butler and Mrs.Jennie Chapman of Memphis. The funeral
was held at the home of her daughter, Mrs.W.H.Baynes Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Pastor,
Rev.Howell Taylor of the Methodist church, assisted by Rev. J.W.Waters. Interment was in the Old
cemetery. From the Lauderdale County Enterprise, Ripley, Tenn. Mrs.M.L.Brodie, of Ripley, Tenn.,
mother of Mrs.James L.Alley of this city, passed away at Ripley Tuesday, Oct.6,1931. Funeral
services were held at Ripley Wednesday. Mrs.Alley went to her mother's bedside earlier in the week,
and Mr.Alley went over Wednesday to attend the funeral.

Wilder were held in Memphis Sunday afternoon, with interment in Calvary cemetery. Mrs.Wilder, who
was the sister of Mrs.F.M.Hess of this city, died a short time after being struck by an automobile
on Madison Ave. in Memphis. Attending the funeral from this city were Mr.and Mrs.Hess, and Mrs.Dora
McCracken, mother of the deceased. Per the death certificate, she was a widow, and a registered
nurse, born in Tennessee, age 48 and her mother's maiden name, was Dora Priesley.
11/05/31 WEIER LEO H. 1887 11 4 1931 CITY Funeral services for Mr.Leo H.Weier, age 40, who
was fatally injured noon yesterday when the Ford coupe which he was driving collided with a heavy
truck and trailer, on Hwy 70 about 400 yards south of the Dixie Motor Co., will be held Friday
morning at the W.E.Stevens Funeral Home with Father Edwin A.Hemmen, performing the ceremony.
Services will be held grave side in Forrest City cemetery by Forrest City Post No.4, American
Legion, of which Weier, a WWI veteran was a member. Weier died at St.Joseph hospital in Memphis
yesterday afternoon, Nov.4,1931, about thirty minutes after being carried there by Stevens
ambulance. Weier was well known in Forrest City, having lived her many years. For the past ten years
he had been employed at the Bon Ton Cafe here, working nights. Deceased is survived by his mother,
Mrs.C.G.Weier, Roswell, N.Mexico; three sisters, Mrs.A.E.Berry, Roswell; Mrs.Guy P.Tripp of Herald,
Ark.;and Mrs.James B.McCrary of Forrest City; three brothers, Roy Weier, of Madison, Walter of

11/12/31 PATRICK E. W. 1891 11 11 1931 COGBILL Funeral services for E.W.Patrick, age 40
years, of Wynne, Brakeman for the Missouri Pacific Railway Co., who was accidentally killed
yesterday, Nov.11,1931, in the yards of the Forrest City Cotton Oil Mill, are being held this
afternoon at First Methodist church in Wynne, Rev.Oliver, the pastor, conducting the ceremony.
Burial will be in the Cogbill cemetery there. Patrick was killed almost instantly when struck on the
back of the neck by a bundle of steel reinforcing rods thrown from a freight car by negro mill
hands. His neck was broken, and he died about five minutes after a doctor arrived. High sides of the
car prevented the men from seeing him outside the car when they threw the steel over.
11/12/31 CARAWAY THADDEUS HORATIUS SENATOR 10 17 1871 11 7 1931 WEST LAWN Senator Thaddeus
H.Caraway died Saturday night, Nov.7,1931, in St.Vincent's Infirmary in Little Rock after he had
fully recovered from an operation for removal of a kidney stone on Oct.29th. Death was caused by a
coronary occlusion, a blood clot in the coronary artery which supplies the heart muscle. He was 60
years of age, and had represented Arkansas in the U. S.Senate since 1920, and previously had served
in the national House. Besides Mrs.Caraway, three sons survive, Lieut.Paul Caraway, Lieut.Forrest
Caraway and Robert Caraway, and a brother, E.L.Caraway of Manilla, Miss. county. The two elder sons
are graduates of the U.S.Military Academy at West Point, Paul who is 26 is stationed in Washington,
D.C., and Forrest, 22, is stationed at Ft.Washington, Md., Robert is attending school in Washington.
Funeral services will be held in Jonesboro Monday, with Congressional honors. He was born on a farm
near Springhill, Mo., Oct.17, 1871. He gained college education by working at odd jobs, graduation
from Dickson College, Dickson, Tenn., he came to Arkansas and taught school from 1896 to 1899,
studying law in the meantime. He was admitted to the bar in 1900, and was elected prosecuting
attorney of the Second Judicial District, which he held until 1913, when he was elected to
U.S.Congress from the First Congressional District. He succeeded Senator W.F.Kirby in election of
1920. In 1902 he was married to Miss Hattie Wyatt at Harrisburg, Ark. The body will lie in state at
the State Capitol on Saturday. Then the body will be sent to Jonesboro under the Congressional
Guard.

11/12/31 AIKENS BUDDY 1914 11 10 1931 UNKNOWN Wynne-Nov.10-Buddy Aikens, aged 17, son of
Oscar Aikens, farmer, living five miles south east of Wynne, killed himself this afternoon,
Nov.10,1931, at the home of his father. According to reports other members of the family were
picking cotton when the boy left the field in order to get a drink of water. A short time later
members of the family found the body with a shotgun which had been fired nearby, The shot tore out
his heart. The boy left no message, and the family knows of no reason for his suicide.
11/12/31 CREEKMORE ELIAS 1921 11 7 1931 UNKNOWN Wynne-Nov.7-A truck load of 17 people en
route to a Pentacostal church meeting in the country near Wynne, met with tragedy when the truck
collided with another, and one person, Elias Creekmore, age 10 was killed and two others injured.
The youngster was killed instantly, and his mother lost her leg, Mrs.H.A.Creekmore, later when it
had to be amputated. She was taken by ambulance to Memphis hospital for further attention. The
Creekmore family were farmers living near Wynne.
11/12/31 CAPPS ELLIS 1898 11 16 1931 UNKNOWN Ellis Capps, age 33 years, former resident of
St.Francis county and proprietor of Dillon's Cash Store in Clarendon for the past three years, was
found dead in his overturned automobile Friday morning on Hwy 70, one mile west of Crow Creek Bridge
and two miles east of Forrest City. He had been shot once under the right ear. The shell, fired from
a 12 gauge Winchester pump shotgun which was found across the body, had been cut in half, or rimmed
so as to fire in one wad. A bailing wire loop was found tied thru the trigger guard, about ten
inches in length. The coroner's jury returned verdict that he had committed suicide. The body was
discovered by Mrs.Leo Grobmyer of Forrest City who was on her way to Whitmore, where her brother
Lindsey Bridgforth and father, J.O.Bridgforth are engaged in farming operations. The body was still
warm and so death was on Nov.16,1931. S.M.Capps, of Heth, brother of the dead man, said he knows of
no reason for the suicide. His wife and two children, Edith age 6, and Bobby, age 4, were at the
home of Mrs.Capps mother near Los Angeles, Calif. when informed of the death. He is also survived by
his mother, Mrs.W.J.Dillon of Newcastle; a brother, S.M.Capps of Heth, and a half brother, Oscar
Gandy, a farmer of Newcastle.
11/16/31 HICKMAN LUCILLE MRS JOHNSON 1907 11 15 1931 HUGHES The body of Mrs.Lucille Hickman,
24 years, was found at Conway Sunday, Nov.15,1931, was brought here for burial in the Hughes
cemetery. Services were conducted today by Rev.H.K.Morehead of the Methodist church. Deceased is
survived by her husband, Luther Hickman, parents, Mr.and Mrs.Murray Johnson of Round Pond, and two
brothers, Taft and Gene of Round Pond.
11/16/31 HAMMOND G. A. MRS UNK 11 14 1931 MISSISSIPPI Mrs.G.A.Hammond, mother of C.E.Hammond
of this city, died at Newton, Miss. Saturday afternoon. Mr.and Mrs.Hammond are there now, having
left last week.
11/19/31 STEVENS H. B. UNK 11 16 1931 UNKNOWN Mr.and Mrs.H.B.Stevens who lived at Blossom,
between Wheatley and Goodwin, were instantly killed and also their son, H.B. Jr., were fatally
injured in Rock Island passenger train No.41, and automobile collision on Monday, Nov.16,1931. about
two miles east of Wheatley. Stevens was superintendent of Wheatley consolidated schools and
Mrs.Stevens was a teacher in the Goodwin schools. The son was a student in the Wheatley school.
Mr.Stevens and the boy had gone to Goodwin for Mrs.Stevens, and the three were returning home. They
had turned off the paved highway and started to cross the Rock Island to the old gravel route of Hwy
70 when the train struck the car. J.B.Hughes of Wheatley, who saw the accident, said the car was
moving slowly, but the road was rough and he believed the occupants of the car did not see the
approaching train. The car was dragged 300 yards before the train could be stopped. It is reported
that Mr.Stevens had broken his glasses, and it is thought this contributed to the accident.
J.Webster was engineer of the train and W.E.Jones the conductor, both from Little Rock. Rev.Henry
J.King, rector of the Christ Church of this city and Dr.E.J.Money, a colored physician of Brinkley
were among the first to reach the scene. Mr.and Mrs.Stevens taught at the Goodwin schools until the
Wheatley schools were consolidated with them. They formerly lived near Chalybeate, Miss., and
Mr.Stevens has a brother, Bryan Stevens, and his mother, Mrs.J.M.Stevens, living at Ripley, Miss.
They had planned to move to Blossom on Thanksgiving day to live with Mr.H.B.Stevens. Mr.Stevens was
a member of the Brinkley American Legion and recently named chaplain of the post. He was also a past
Grand Master of the Bell Baxter Masonic Lodge No.228 at Wheatley.
11/19/31 BUTLER JOHN ALONZO 8 28 1862 11 17 1931 MADISON John Alonzo Butler, age 69 years,
passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs.Opal Taylor, in Madison on Tuesday, Nov.17,1931. He had
been ill with pneumonia for the past nine or ten days. Mr.Butler was born in New Albany, Indiana,
Aug.28,1862. From there he moved to Texas, thence Oklahoma, and finally settling in Madison,
Arkansas some 15 or 20 years ago. He was a brick mason by trade, and continued active in this line
of work until about one year ago. Deceased is survived by one daughter, Mrs.Opal Taylor; two sons,
Eldridge and Ray Butler, all of Madison, and one brother, T.H.Butler of Muskogee, Okla. Funeral
services were conducted by Rev.Porter Weaver of the Methodist church at the family residence of
Eldridge Butler in Madison. Interment in the Madison cemetery.

Nov.27,1931. Her death followed an illness of two days while on a visit to her daughter, and news of
her sudden passing will come as a shock to her many friends in Forrest City, where she was well
known. Deceased is survived by two sons, Dr.Bob Hall of Wheatley, and Sam Hall of Brinkley; four
daughters, Mrs.O.L.Young of Forrest City; Mrs.E.E.Mashburn of Little Rock; Mrs.C.C.Conrad of Little
Rock; and Mrs.Fred Inman of Haynesville, La. Funeral arrangements are incomplete, but will probably
be Sunday in Wheatley.

Pennington, age 73, who died Dec.8,1931, at her home on Shell Lake, north of Heth, were held Friday
at the W.E.Stevens Funeral Home. Interment was in the Forrest City cemetery, with Rev. Porter
Weaver, of Madison and Widener, conducting. Deceased is survived by two sons, James Pennington of
Little Rock, and William Pennington of Heth; and three daughters, Mrs.J.E.Wolf of Memphis,
Mrs.W.E.Shelton and Mrs.A.A.Pennington of Heth.
12/10/31 NICHOLS ETTA MRS HORTON 1853 12 9 1931 LOUGHRIDGE Mrs.Etta Nichols, age 78, died
last night, Dec.9,1931, at the home of her son, M.A.Nichols on N.Rosser Street. Funeral services and
interment will be in Loughridge cemetery today, with Rev.James T.Willcoxon conducting the ceremony.
The deceased is survived by one son, M.A.Nichols of this city; one daughter, Mrs.W.E.Haynie, of
Widener; one brother, E.L.Horton of Newcastle, and other relatives and friends.
12/31/31 GATLING JOHN WILLIAMS 4 28 1887 12 19 1931 CITY The body of John Williams Gatling,
43 years, was found this morning in the L'Anguille river this morning by a searching party composed
of A.L.Stevens, John Threat . Russell Williams. It was found under a drift, about one mile below the
new concrete bridge and a quarter mile below the iron bridge near where his car was found parked
following his disappearance from home on Saturday, Dec.19. The body had not come to the surface but
was first touched by Mr.Stevens boat paddle, and John Threat reached down and pulled it to the
surface. It was en tangled with a mass of drift, near the middle of the river. The body had drifted
to within 200 or 300 yards of nets that had been stretched across the river several days ago to
intercept it. News of the finding was brought to the city by Mr.Williams and the body brought to
Stevens Funeral home. The body upon investigation at the funeral home was found to have a bullet
hole in the left of the heart and it is believed that Mr.Gatling would not have been able to do the
shooting himself based on the angle of the bullet in the body. The autopsy found a 25 caliber
bullet, performed by Dr.N.C.McCown and Dr.J.O.Rush, and the coroner's inquiry returned a verdict of
death due to a bullet from an unknown person. Funeral services will be tomorrow, New Years day, at
the Forrest City cemetery. Mr.Gatling's watch was found, and it stopped at 1:20 o'clock, and his
knife was also found along with a five dollar bill and papers. No note or message was found.
Mr.Gatling had left home en route to work at the Forrest City Grocer Co. when the disappearance came
about.
