05/02/19 A Real Soldier: We had a call from one of the real soldiers Wednesday, Private
Samuel M.Block of Tampa, Fla., a nephew of Mr.N.Block, to whom he is paying a visit. Mr.Block was a
private in Co.A.-102 Infantry, was discharged in Baltimore in April and came through Wynne to see
relatives before he left for home. For action at Marchville and Raville, Sept.25 and 26,1918, and
for which Block received the Croix de Querre for extraordinary bravery for carrying a message thru a
terrific artillery and machine gun barrage.

years ago from Key West, Fla. and have operated the Forrest City Herald. Over 40 men in Forrest City
are stockholders in the enterprise. Ed Landvoigt has owned and edited the Forrest City Times for
nearly fifty years.

05/09/19 Mr.and Mrs.Otto W.Rollwage who were recently married in Ft.Smith, returned Sunday
from their bridal tour and are now at the home of Mr.and Mrs.Otto B.Rollwage. The bride was well
known here, having taught school in Central School last year.

80,000 words by delegates of 27 nations.
05/09/19 New National Road thru Arkansas planned. Memphis, Tenn. May 7,1919-Following
adoption by the Bankhead Highway Association at Mineral Wells, Texas, of the southern route from
Memphis to Little Rock, the Muscle Shoals Association announces the route selected for Memphis to
Little Rock: Cities on route:Marion, Parkin, Wynne, Colt, Hunter, Cotton Plant, Des Arc, and Lonoke.
The Bankhead Highway will pursue the following route: Marion, Forrest City, Palestine, Brinkley,
Devall's Bluff, Hazen, and Lonoke.
05/09/19 Some of the Senior Boys of the High School entertained the crowd after the lunch at
the picnic held at Crow Creek:Francis Clark, Vernon Hodges, Will T.McKie, and Ernest Borden
displayed their abilities as charmers of green snakes.

Rainbow Division, states that he arrived at Camp Merritt, N.Jersey, and is awaiting discharge.
05/16/19 Two autos collided near the Central School, and had extensive damage, they were
delivery vehicles for McCleskey and E.Snyder
05/16/19 Ned Mallory just returned after being released from service, and Capt.John Snyder
received his discharge at Camp Pike on Tuesday.
05/16/19 High School graduation set on May 30 for Forrest City, and May 20 for Wheatley High
School per Stella A.Doyle, Principal. Central School graduation set for the 29th. Lincoln High
School graduation from 25 to May 30, Valedictorian is Theora Ankrum, Saluatorian was Gertrude

05/16/19 Mrs.Lef Winship with little son, Frank Eugene, were visitors with her mother
Mrs.E.C.Williams over the weekend.
05/16/19 Returned Soldiers and Sailors to Organize: The American Legion, an organization of
soldiers and sailors and marines will organize local chapter, May 28 at the courthouse.
05/23/19 Judge J.S.R.Cowan, one of the pioneer settlers of Hughes was in town Thursday.
05/23/19 Work on paving streets by Mr.James McCoppin began Tuesday on Jackson, between Rosser
and Washington. A total of six and one half miles in all will be paved within six months time.
05/30/19 Henry Bernard, husband of Mrs.Mary Ahlstedt Bernard, who died some months ago,
returned home from service of about a year in France. Mr.Bernard did not know of the birth of his
daughter, and the death of his wife until some time in February. Sad indeed was his home coming.

06/06/19 Charles and Louis Haven are building new homes on Rosser Street. The foundation is
laid for one, and the roof is being applied on the other at this time.
06/06/19 Dr.C.S.Aldrich arrived back home, and while in Springfield, Illinois, he had the
pleasure of spending one night with Mr.Geo.W.Wright of that city, formerly of Forrest City.
06/06/19 Milton Izard, son of R.J.Izard returned home from France on Thursday, he expects to
enlist in the Navy. Mrs.Walton Rogers and daughter Martha, of Panola, Ariz. to be the guest of her
father, R.J.Izard and Mrs.Izard.
06/06/19 Edward E. and Grace D.Vadakin, children of the late Mrs.E.L.Vadakin, left Wednesday
for their new home in Owasso, Michigan, to be with their uncle Mr.A.M.Darling. Col.Landvoigt, their
grandfather, accompanied them as far as Memphis.
06/13/19 Three monuments at City cemetery unveiled Sunday by the Woodmen of the World to
honor the graves of Sovereigns Dr.Beauchamp, Chas.E.Walker, and W.A.Greene.
06/13/19 Josh and Reubin Mallory out on bond on murder charge of James Connelly, the trial is
set for September, with Williams & Norfleet defense attorneys, and Prosecuting Attorney is John
E.MIller.
06/13/19 Phillip Hickey, of Eunice, La. arrived to replace Mr.R.M.Stevens as manager of the
Forrest City Cotton Oil Mill, he has eighteen years experience. Mr.Stevens having accepted a
position with the Shelby County Cotton Oil Mill of Memphis.
06/13/19 Sergeant John W.Gray was mustered out of the service at Camp Pike, May 30,1919, and
is now working at Grobmyer's Meat Market.
06/13/19 Lt.G.L.Folbre, having returned from France via Hoboken, N.Jersey, and being assigned
to Camp Pike, visited his mother Mrs.T.C.Folbre for several days.
06/13/19 Mr.Clyde White returned from France via New York and was mustered out at Camp Pike
last Saturday.
06/13/19 J.C.Hart is procuring oil leases along Crowley's Ridge, he is of Washington, Pa. and
is a guest at the Marion Hotel.
06/13/19 Mr.Wayne Perkins, of 116 Infantry, 29th Division, who participated in St.Mihiel,
Argonne and other battles in France, was mustered out at Camp Pike last Friday.
06/13/19 Goodwinites treated to airplane ride after refueling the plane. Monday afternoon,
Lieut.N.L.Mosi, late of the U.S.Army, Aviation Section, was forced to land due to lack of fuel, in
his 90 H.P.Curtiss Biplane. The ice was broken when Elmo R.Moss stepped into the machine, and was
given an birds eye-view of the local scene. Others who had the courage to ride were Mr.and
Mrs.T.H.Mitchell, Miss Ethel Jordon, Tom and Don Brown, A.R.Swearingen, A.C. and R.C.Bucholz,
F.E.Dyal, Wm.Blount, and Norbourne Fisher.
06/13/19 Card of thanks for friends and neighbors who so kindly assisted us during our sad
misfortune on loss of our daughter Miss Francis May Fondren. Mr.and Mrs.James Fondren.

06/27/19 Lt.J.T.Lanier, arrived from overseas Wednesday evening, he has been receiving
treatment in Little Rock hospital for throat troubles.
06/27/19 Homer Hines has returned from France, and is expected home next week. Walter
Greenacre who has been overseas with the 142nd Field Artillery, returned Thursday from France. He
reports that only three of his fellow men in the company lost their lives.
07/04/19 Big Deal in St.Francis County land transaction worth $473,715.00 on sale of 3,841
acres of land to E.A.Jennings, of Memphis, by E.A.Rolfe, R.F.Cook, and C.E.Turley. What is known as
Harve Robinson farm, located nine miles southeast of Forrest City.
07/04/19 Lewis W.Addington served two years in the Army, and has returned to Forrest City to
resume working in Addington's Dry Goods Store.

07/11/19 Corp.Glenn Frazier, Co.F-142 Reg.Infantry, younger brother of Brian Frazier, made
the supreme sacrifice for liberty on the battlefields of France, and awarded the Crox De Guerre with
Palm.
07/18/19 Walter May, a well known soldier of this community returned home from France a few
weeks ago. Will Merwin came home wearing two stripes who was mustered out at Camp Pike, he served in
France for about a year as a Civil Engineer building bridges etc. John Webb, son of Mr.and
Mrs.D.C.Webb returned home after his discharge last Thursday.

07/25/19 Finas McDaniel, who served overseas, is reported to be at Camp Pike awaiting his
discharge.
07/25/19 Confederate Pension Board Meets: On July.21,1919, T.C.Merwin, Ed Landvoigt, and
T.W.Yerzley met and recommended the following: The petition of Nuncie Chipman and Ann E.Roberts,
widows of deceased Confederate Soldiers were recommended; Also that of J.M.Pilcher, transfer from
Mississippi was recommended.

08/01/19 Albert Buford has recently returned from overseas, and is at Camp Pike.
08/01/19 J.J.Tharp has purchased the Moore's Cash Grocery, in the Mann building, and will
continue. He had been bookkeeper for Brandon & Baugh for a number of years.
08/01/19 Sergeant Ernest Dinsant, colored, who talked about being gassed in France when he
arrived home after being discharged due to disability.
08/01/19 We are advised of the enlistment of these men for the Air Corps: Parish Rattan,
William Moore, Duchey Jarrett, Rexford Lee Houston.
08/08/19 Mr. and Mrs.George Dooley received a telegram announcing them that George Jr. has
arrived back from overseas in New York. He is expected to be released soon.
08/15/19 Mr.Ambrose McDaniel has purchased the Abner Clark Plantation from R.H.Stockard for
$40,000. It is 367 acres near Whitmore, on the Rock Island railroad, about 12 miles east. He also
owns the land known as the Island.
08/29/19 J.M.Abernathy, who will be remembered as having taught at the High School but with
the rest of our boys went to France, arrived in the city this week from his home in Pulaski, Tenn.
Welcome back Professor.
08/29/19 Dr.Hugh Puckett, a graduate veterinarian, arrived in the city this week from Little
Rock, and will take up the late Dr.Aldrich's practice.
09/05/19 James Oursler notified his mother Mrs.Oursler that he will expects discharge soon
from the Navy and will return to Forrest City. Also, Clifford C.Canterberry has just returned from
France to Camp Merritt, N.J., and was discharged on Sept.19 at Hattiesburg, Miss.
09/05/19 St.Francis Catholic Church was organized in 1885.The name given in honor of
St.Francis of Assissi, the founder of the Franciscan Order. The original church was replaced in 1895
when they built a more pretentious building, and in 1915 remodeled and newly furnished. For several
years, Father J.B.White was in charge, until his death several months ago, when Rev.Father Norton of
Brinkley was put in charge. The congregation is growing, and now has over 80 communicants who attend
regularly.
09/12/19 Lawrence Jones was on furlough from the Navy last week, on a visit to his mother and
sister, Mrs.Annie Jones and Mrs.A.A.French. He expects discharge in about six weeks.
09/26/19 Jury secured for trial of Josh Mallory began Wednesday morning for the killing of
James G.Connelly last May.
09/26/19 Robert Stevens, who is the Marines at Paris Island, S.C., is visiting with his
father Mr.R.S.Stevens and sister, Mrs.R.H.Payne. Homer Hine arrived from Camp Taylor, Louisville,
Ky., on furlough visiting parents Mr.and Mrs.C.R.Hine.
10/03/19 Josh Mallory found guilty of manslaughter in the death of Mr.James Connelly, and
sentenced to seven years in the penitentiary.
10/03/19 Many Killed in Elaine Riot: Two white men dead, one white soldier wounded, and ten
negroes killed, was the toll yesterday of the race riot at Elaine, which started Tuesday night with
the killing of W.A.Adkins, special agent of the Missouri Pacific Railroad at Helena. Five hundred
troops from Camp Pike were brought in to control the situation. Thursday's loss of life swelled the
deaths to 22 for the two days of rioting, including five whites, and 17 negroes.
10/03/19 President Woodrow Wilson suffers Nervous reaction due to overwork and influenza, and
cancels speaking tour to return to Washington on his special train.
10/10/19 Malcom O.Gorman, who has been stationed at Panama with the Coast Artillery for two
years, is expecting discharge from Camp Pike in two weeks.
10/10/19 Race riots have broken out in Wynne, Ark, and toll of deaths are at 193 statewide,
and around 14 to 18 negroes have died at Wynne.
10/10/19 Private Cecil L.Hudson, who for the past eight months has been stationed at
Antrwerp, Belgium, is expected this week for visit with Mr.and Mrs.W.P.Clark before going to Iuka,
Miss.
10/17/19 Claude Roy, son Of Mrs.Jess Shelton has returned from overseas where he has spent
eighteen months in service.
10/24/19 A.B.Nimocks, who has been overseas in service has returned home after his discharge.
10/31/19 Motorized Fire Truck received in Forrest City. It is the same as Marianna ordered,
and is an International Harvester truck.
10/31/19 Mrs.L.N.Block of the Block Hotel was given a birthday party to celebrate her 72nd
birthday, on Oct.23,1919.
10/31/19 Walter L.Pounders is serving in the Marines Aviation force in Haiti.
10/31/19 Lt.E.F.Tobble, who recently received his discharge in the U.S.Army, from Dayton,
Ohio, has decided to move here and make it his home.
11/07/19 S.B.Trapp, and S.McDaniel Trapp, returned to the city this week, the former from
Texas, and the latter from Georgia.
11/07/19 Edwin Thomas, on furlough to visit his mother, Mrs.Fannie Thomas, has returned to
Uncle Sam's service in Plattsburg, N.Y.

returned to home after 41 years to visit. He is the son of Jack Camp, and are visiting the
grandfather, Mr.O.E.Dorris, at Colt.
12/18/19 W.W.Campbell elected Cashier at Bank of Eastern Arkansas at age thirty, is an honor
given to few men.
12/18/19 Aviator lands in Hughes with problems, and gives 13 residents a ride:Mr.Eli Abel,
Mrs.Bessye Abel, Mr.and Mrs.C.H.Hulen, Sr., J.C.Stoddard, Ada Mae Adams, Gordon Love, and Mr.Hubert
are some of them.
12/18/19 Mrs.T.J.Davis and daughter Miss Lula Neel Davis sold out at Bonair, and moved to
Augusta, Ark. We will miss them.
12/25/19 Reford Houston, in the Aviation service at Brooks Field, San Antonio, Texas is home
on furlough visiting his parents, Mr.and Mrs.W.H.Houston. He expects soon to be transferred to the
Canal Zone.

05/16/19 Friends will be interested to know of the arrival of a baby girl to Mr.and
Mrs.J.L.Graham, at their home in Redwood, Miss. on Monday, May 5. They formerly resided in Forrest
City.
06/13/19 Born last Saturday morning, to Mr.and Mrs.Ed Neal, a bouncing baby boy of ten
pounds, named Edwin L.Neal in honor of his great grand father, Col.Edwin Landvoigt. Mr.Neal runs the
City Drug Store here in Forrest City.

05/09/19 ALEXANDER DAVE UNK 5 8 1919 UNK Killing in the Bottom: Coroner McDaniel, Deputy
Sheriff Lacefield, and Constable Brown were called yesterday to investigate a killing in the bottoms
yesterday afternoon. The killing occurred about one o'clock on the Charles Bailes farm about 20
miles up the river on Military road. From the testimony it seems the killing was provoked. Two men
in a wagon were coming from the far end of the farm and no one noticed Sandusky Williams (white) and
Dave Alexander (colored) in conversation, and the negro raised his hoe when the white man shot him
thru the heart. The coroner rendered the verdict accordingly. Williams was met on the road coming to
town, but was not recognized by the officers. Williams is in town and will probably give himself up.
05/09/19 McINTYRE SAM UNK 4 22 1919 UNK On the night of April 22,1919, Sam McIntyre, under
indictment for murder, was taken from the county jail by masked men, carried a few hundred yards up
the railroad tracks and hanged. Street rumor has it that the life of McIntyre was taken not for the
crime he was accused of having committed, but that he might be silenced as a witness against others
under indictment for the same, and other crimes. Other reports state that he would, the following
day, have been released on bond, and that the lives of witnesses against him have been threatened.
No matter the motive, the lynching of McIntyre was without justification, and lowers the standard of
the people of the county as law abiding citizens. Those who believe in organized government, in the
protection of its courts for their lives and property, should assist the district attorney in
apprehending the guilty parties, and they, the district attorney and other court officials should
discharge a duty they owe the state by diligently searching for evidence in the case. Also, five
dipping vats for cattle were dynamited west of the L'Anguille, two on the night of April 30, and
three on May 4, we need to prosecute those responsible.
05/16/19 HAYES M. L. 1884 5 13 1919 UNK M.L.Hayes, aged about 35 years, a Missouri Pacific
brakeman, was killed in the yards near the water tank Tuesday morning, May 13,1919. It is supposed
that Hayes in some manner missed his footing or lost his balance and bell behind the tender and
under the wheels, which cut the body in two. The remains were taken to Stevens & Co. undertaking
parlor, and prepared for burial to his home. He leaves a widow and two children.
05/16/19 GRAHAM JOHN 8 31 1847 5 14 1919 ALLEN John Graham of Cross County Dead: The funeral
of John Graham, who died at his home near Wynne, on Wednesday, May 14,1919, took place on Thursday,
with interment in the Allen cemetery in the north end of the county, services conducted by
Rev.Williams of the Presbyterian church of Wynne assisted by Rev.Galloway of the Methodist church of
the same place. Mr.Graham was born about 72 years ago in North Carolina, coming to Cross County with
his parents when he was seven years of age, and lived on the same farm until his death. Mr.Graham
served in the Civil war, and was one of the most substantial men in Cross County. He is survived by
two sons, John Graham Jr., and James Graham, both of Wynne, and two daughters, Mrs.J.L.Hare and Miss
Kate Graham of Wynne.

Levitt, of near Palestine, was brought home from Memphis Tuesday. Mrs.Levitt had been taken to
Memphis Sunday, for an operation which terminated fatally. She is survived by her husband and six
children, to whom we extended the sincere sympathy of sorrowing relatives and many friends.
05/30/19 CONNELLY JAMES JR. UNK 5 25 1919 ILLINOIS Stabbed to Death Sunday: Josh and Reuben
Mallory are in the county jail, held by the coroner without bail, awaiting action of the next grand
jury, charged with killing of James Connelly last Sunday morning, May 25,1919. The killing was the
outgrowth of a quarrel and fight earlier in the morning between Connelly and Emmett Mallory, father
of Reuben Mallory, which occurred in Crawford''s restaurant on Rosser Street, in which it is said
that Connelly struck the elder Mallory with a chair. The boys, on being told of the fight, were
incensed and went out looking for Connelly, finding him in the custody of Street Commissioner
Dooley, on the court house lawn. Witnesses in the earlier fight state that the latter was partially
under the influence of liquor at the time of the fight. Reuben Mallory is the son of Emmett, while
Josh is a nephew. They have never been in trouble prior to this time, have a large family
connection, being related to some of the best families of the county. Members of the family and
their friends are greatly shocked over the tragedy. At the inquest before the Coroner S.P.McDaniel
on Sunday morning, the following accounts of the affair were given: By George M.Dooley, who had
Connelly in custody: I was going to the depot when I say John Cargill with this man Connelly in
charge and I made the remark to Cargill not to lock him up, that I would go his bond. I then heard
of the difficulty Cannelly had with Emmett Mallory. Cargill turned Connelly over to me and I took
charge of him until I could go and find Mallory. Connelly was sitting on the base of the concrete
flower urn and was sitting down by a tree in front of the courthouse, to which point we had
proceeded upon leaving Cargill. I heard someone come up behind me and when I turned around Josh
Mallory was rushing Connelly with a knife and Reuben Mallory was also going on him. I jumped up and
called to them to stop. I then grabbed Josh after he had struck Connelly once. I then struggled with
Josh, but he was too strong for me to handle, and broke loose from me and struck Connelly twice
more. I heard Josh say, "You ......, you will abuse an old man will you:" "He also told me that he
would cut me if I did not turn him loose, Mr.McDaniel and Mr.W.L.Lawrence came to my assistance and
we finally succeeded in stopping them and disarming Josh. Next a statement by Sheriff J.F.McDougal,
and W.L.Lawrence. Connelly had worked for Dr.C.S.Aldrich as a horseshoer, and was from Springfield,
Illinois, son of James E.Connelly Sr. His daughter, Christina Marie Pitt Connelly lives in Kimmerer,
Wyo.; one brother, John Connelly of Dubuque, Iowa, and another Joe Connelly, who just returned from
France. The remains were shipped to Springfield, with Dr.Aldrich escorting the body. Mortuary:
Connelly-Funeral services for James Connelly, a former Springfield boy, who was assassinated in the
court house yard at Forrest City, Ark., on Sunday morning, May 25,1919, were held at 9 o'clock
yesterday morning at the home of his aunt, Mrs.Clarence Delmore, 1603 East Washington street, and at
the Church of the Immaculate Conception at 9:30 o'clock, Rev.Father Hickey presiding. Interment was
made in Calvary Cemetery, the remains arrived Tuesday morning, with Dr.C.S.Aldrich, who was the
employer of Mr.Connelly, accompanied him here. He is the son of James Connelly Sr., who survives him
along with one daughter, Christina Marie Pitt of Oregon, two aunts, Mrs.Clarence Delmore and Miss
Bridget Connelly, and uncle, William Barry, and three cousins, Mary, Thomas and Michael Barry.

06/06/19 CARNES E. B. 1899 6 1 1919 S.Carolina Train kills young man near Edmondson: The
Westbound Rock Island train No.45 struck a young man by the name of E.B.Carnes, son of Mrs.Lizzie
Carnes of Central, S.C. last Sunday forenoon, June 1,1919, causing instant death. Evidently the
young man, about 18 to 20 years of age, was out on a tramp, perhaps looking for work, and from loss
of sleep, lay down beside the tracks at a tressel. He was laying with his feet extended from the
track, with his head between two cross ties, and it is presumed he awoke from sleep and raised his
head slightly just in time to be struck by the pilot of the locomotive. The engineer stated that he
did not see the young man until his train was too close to the body to stop. The body was brought to
Forrest City by the same train, No.45, and the remains were prepared for burial by Stevens & Co.

06/13/19 HAMBLETON C. P. 10 7 1852 6 9 1919 HUGHES Death of C.P.Hambleton:
Mr.Hambleton,substantial farmer and one of the most highly respected citizens of St.Francis county,
passed to his reward and final rest Monday, June 9, 1919, and his remains laid to rest Tuesday at
Hughes Cemetery. Mr.Hambleton was born Oct.7,1852 at Danville, Va. His parents died when he was in
his tender youth at age six years, and he then moved to Mason, Tenn., where he was reared by an
elder brother, O.E.Hambleton. Mr.Hambleton came to Forrest City in the year 1880, and worked as a
salesman in the store for Capt. James Fussell for a brief period, after which he became a farmer and
which has principally occupied his years from that time forward. On Dec.1,1881, he married Miss Lucy
Jett, of this county, and unto them was born three sons; Thos.Edward, deceased, and R.E. and
D.B.Hambleton. Mr.Hambleton was the last survivor of four brothers and two sisters, Twenty seven
years ago he professed the faith of Christ, joined the Methodist church and ever afterwards lived a
quiet and un-assuming Christian life. He had been in failing health for the last three years, and
when the end came, he was ready to go. It is said that when a man lives a life that commands the
confidence, love and co-operation of his neighbors has not lived in vain, and in these respects
Mr.Hambleton's life was a success. Many friends will mourn his death.
06/27/19 RUNYON JAMES 10 27 1912 6 21 1919 CITY James Runyon Drowned last Sunday in
St.Francis River while swimming with several other small boys within a few feet of the river bank.
Not being able to swim, he was in the habit of using a slab of timber as a support in the water. He
had pushed the timber from him over deep water, and it is believed that he either lost his footing
on the slippery bottom, or missed his grip on the floating timber, and went under the water. Frantic
efforts were made to recover his body, but twenty to thirty minutes expired before it was located,
with the grab hook floating beneath and near the outer edge of a floating barge of timber. HIs body
was taken from the water, and first aid applied to no avail. James Runyon was born Oct.27,1902 at
Hot Springs, this state, and at the time of his death was seventeen years, eight months and five
days old. He had been an employee of the Rock Island Railroad Company. His father died in 1912. He
was the only support of a widowed mother and other orphaned children. Interment took place in the
City Cemetery, Tuesday, Rev.Dr.J.W.McFarlane conducting the ceremonies.

07/11/19 WEST ISAAC 1908 7 9 1919 UNK Accidental Killing at Madison: At Madison, between 4
and 5 o'clock last Wednesday evening, Erastus Richardson and Isaac West, ages about nine and eleven,
were playfully wrestling in the kitchen of Richardson boy's home, when the shot gun leaning against
the wall was accidentally knocked over, discharged, and its contents struck the West boy. He lived
long enough to make a statement. Coroner S.P.McDaniel was called to the scene and held an inquest,
the jury rendering a verdict to the effect that the West boy came to his death by accidental
discharge of a shot gun.

Clarence Edgar, who died at 4 o'clock Thursday morning, July 17,1919, after a short illness of
typhoid fever, was held this afternoon at City Cemetery, services conducted by Rev.J.R.G.White of
the Baptist church. Clarence was 18 years, 10 months, and 7 days of age, and was the son of Mr.and
Mrs.Bob Edgar, by whom he is survived, besides two brothers, Jim and W.C., and one sister Louise. To
the family is extended the sincere sympathy of the entire community, in this, their sad bereavement.
07/25/19 SMITH SARAH ELIZABETH MRS 12 31 1840 7 18 1919 McDaniel Death of Mrs.Sarah E.Smith:
A peculiarly and sad death occurred Friday night, July 18,1919, when Mrs.Sarah Elizabeth Smith
passed away at her home five miles south of town after an illness of about thirty minutes, aged 78
years. The deceased was born near Nashville, Tenn., Dec.31,1840. In 1855, she was married to
Wash.Withers, and to this union were born two boys and one girl, two of whom are still living,
Mrs.Katie Gantt of Ft.Worth, Texas, and Ben F.Withers of Nashville, Tenn. On May 30,1866, she was
again married to W.H.Smith near Nashville, Tenn. They came to this country in 1870 and unto them
were born seven children, only two are living, Mrs.Jennie Cornelus and Jerry Smith, who were at her
bedside at time of death. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev.G.G.Davidson
of the First Methodist church, with interment at the McDaniel cemetery. Sincere sympathy is extended
to the bereaved husband and other relatives.
07/25/19 FRITS HIRSHAL UNK 7 19 1919 UNK Killed by Unloaded Gun: Coroner S.P.McDaniel was
called to Heth Saturday afternoon to hold an inquest over the death of a negro named Hirshal Frits.
From the evidence the shooting was purely accidental. Willie Robins and Hirshall Frits were in the
latter's home, examining an unloaded revolver, and Robins commenced snapping the weapon, when it was
discovered one chamber was loaded, the contents of which entered Frit's breast, causing death in a
few minutes. The jury rendered a verdict according to the facts.

that was mortal of Roger West Jr., was laid to rest in the City cemetery Sunday evening, July
20,1919. The little fellow who was a strong sturdy child was ill less than two days, and was not at
first considered seriously ill, but the constant attention of two physicians failed to save the
little life, and he was taken home to God who had loaned him for so short a time. Little Roger was
fourteen months old, and had been a bright spot in the lives of his immediate family, which have
been saddened by the passing away of another of it's members less than a year ago. The funeral
services were conducted at the grave by Rev.T.W.Raymond, a Presbyterian minister of Holly Springs,
Miss. Numerous and beautiful floral offerings were received in token of the deep sympathy of the
relatives and friends., The members of the immediate family are the parents, Mr.and Mrs.Roger West,
Sr.; the grandmother, Mrs.George Pettus, and an aunt, Miss Marie Pettus. To these are extended
sincere sympathy in their bereavement.
07/25/19 LOCKER DOC MRS 1901 7 7 1919 UNK Asleep in Jesus: The dark shadow of death has
hovered over another home and snatched away the precious companion of Mr.Doc Locker. This once
bright and happy home, is now desolate and vacant. Mrs.Locker was born in 1901 and died July 7,1919,
after an illness of only a few hours. She had suffered a severe attack of congestion in April 1918.
She was united in the holy bonds of matrimony to Mr.Doc Locker, and to their union was born a bright
little baby boy who was but six months old at the time of his mothers's death. She was a sweet
mother, a true wife, and in loving kindness to all who knew. She was united with the Baptist church
at Shiloh June 30. The last few words she said was, "I am so glad I was baptized, loved ones."

dead at his home on Tuesday night, July 22,1919, about 8 o'clock. He was in Palestine during the day
appearing to be in good health. Heart trouble was the cause.
08/01/19 MOORE SARAH CAROLINE MRS 1845 7 26 1919 UNK Death of Mrs.Sarah Caroline Moore: The
funeral of Mrs.Sarah C.Moore, age 74 years, who died this Saturday morning, July 26,1919, at the
home of her daughter Mrs.Emmett Mallory, was held at Madison Sunday afternoon. The death of the
deceased was due to the infirmities of old age. One daughter, Mrs.Emmett Mallory, survives, and to
her is extended sincere sympathy in her bereavement.
08/01/19 MOXLEY R. H. UNK 7 1919 UNK Coroner S.P.McDaniel was called upon to hold his 83rd
inquest over the body of a colored man named R.H.Moxley, at Linder's Mill, some 14 miles to the
eastward. The two negroes-Isaac Reed and R.H.Moxley-resided in the same house, and a quarrel began
over a woman ending in Reed pumping a fatal load in the body of Moxley, who lingered three hours.
The jury rendered a verdict according to fact. Reed is still at large. On returning from the inquest
the coroner and posse encountered a negro named Hugh Walker in a Ford, who nearly succeeded in
committing suicide. There were several autos on the road-some going east and some going west. Walker
attempting to pass between, and ran into one auto; swerving to the left, he ran into the Coroner's
car, nearly shoving it over.
08/15/19 LEWELLEN A. G. 1894 8 13 1919 OLIVE HILL CEMETERY Two Killed, one injured in train
wreck. A.G.Lewellen, aged 26, fireman, Little Rock, was instantly killed and William P.Finley,
engineer, North Little Rock were fatally injured about four miles from Forrest City, Wednesday,
Aug.13,1919, when a Rock Island freight engine in which they were working overturned. Finley died at
the hospital in Little Rock on Thursday, the 14th. A brakeman, H.W.Pruett, suffered injuries to his
left knee, he was also riding on the locomotive. Finley had been brought to Dr.Rush' s office, and
was given attention by Dr's Rush, Merritt and Boggan. Finley was scalded by escaping steam, and
Lewellen was crushed trying to leave the cab between the water tank and the engine. They had cut
loose the cars at Forrest City, and headed to the water tank for water. The wreck was caused by a
bad set of track. Funeral services for Mr.Lewellen will be held at his home in Little Rock, in
charge of Rev.W.C.Davidson, and the body will be interred in Olive Hill cemetery by Healy & Roth,
undertakers. His grandmother, Mrs.Pritchard was buried last Tuesday. The quick action of H.W.Pruett
prevented the fast passenger train No.45 from hitting the wreckage.

in St.Francis county Saturday and Sunday, setting an un-enviable record that will not again be
attained. The first was at Round Pond, and occurred Saturday night, Aug.9,1919. Amos Nathan, negro,
was shot and killed by Houghton and Clovis Pippin, one of whom is a deputy sheriff. Nathan was about
to be arrested for threatening the life of a negro woman, and in resisting arrest was shot and
killed by the Pippin's.
08/15/19 STENNETT FERD UNK 8 10 1919 UNK Three Killings over Weekend: There were three
killings in St.Francis county Saturday and Sunday, setting an un-enviable record that will not again
be attained. The second occurred Sunday, Aug.10,1919, about two and a half miles east from Colt,
when Ferd Stennett, aged 23, was stabbed to death by George Adamson, age 15. Adamson was caught and
brought to the County Jail by his father and George Huffstuttler, and was later released on a
$1,000.00 bond. The defendant will plead self defense.
08/15/19 BROWN SON UNK 8 10 1919 UNK Three Killings over Weekend: There were three killings
in St.Francis county Saturday and Sunday, setting an un-enviable record that will not again be
attained. The third, Monday morning, Coroner S.P.McDaniel was called to the Edgar Plantation, up
north on the St.Francis river, to hold inquest over the remains of a negro named Son Brown, killed
by another negro named Hugh Cross. The two negroes were returning from church Sunday, when the
killing occurred. No evidence was advanced showing provocation for the murder, but it is supposed "
a woman was in the case.", Brown took to the tall timber and is still at large.
08/29/19 FRIAR J. T. MRS 1843 8 24 1919 TIPTON Death of Mrs.J.T.Friar: Mrs.J.T.Friar, aged
76, died at the Friar home in Haynes Sunday afternoon, Aug.24,1919. Deceased was a native of Lee
County and lived a long, Christian life, leaving numerous friends and relatives to mourn her death.
In her immediate family she is survived by her husband, four children and several grandchildren.
Interment in Tipton cemetery. Most un-readable. She was a Baptist, most children live in Texas.
08/29/19 STEVENS WILEY HOWARD 1895 8 25 1919 MISSISSIPPI W.H.Stevens, there has never been a
more beloved young man in the town of Palestine, than that of Wiley Howard Stevens who was found
dead in his bed last Monday morning, Aug.25,1919. Mr.Stevens came to Palestine about ten years ago
to assist his brother Mr.J.H.Stevens in the Mercantile and other interest at Palestine. Howard
Stevens was owner, and operated Sloniker Gin and Store north of Palestine, until he volunteered his
service in the Regular Army of the U.S.Artillery. Before leaving Fortress Monroe for France, he was
attacked and suffered a severe case of pneumonia, which is supposed to have settled in his lungs or
in his bronchials which resulted in his death by heart failure. The body was slightly warm when
found by Mr.R.E.Allen, who always called Mr.Stevens about six o'clock in the morning. Mr.Stevens was
examined by Dr.Ruff, Palestine, just a few days before his death, having felt a tightness thru his
chest. though the examination revealed nothing of importance, and Mr.Stevens left the Army feeling
fine, no illness since his return to the states. The remains were taken to his old home at Oakland,
Mississippi, where the body was interred. Mr.Stevens was only 24 years old, weighing 185 pounds, six
feet and one inch tall. He leaves a widowed mother, two brothers, and three sisters.

last Friday, Sep.12,1919, at the home of his parents in Pine Tree, occasioned sadness in this city.
The deceased had been for a number of years in the postal service at the Forrest City Postoffice,
and was loved and respected by all who knew him. He had been ill for several weeks with typhoid
fever. Funeral services were held on the following day, at Barnishaw cemetery. Deceased was 28 years
of age. Truly, a good man has departed for a better world. He was the son of Mr.and Mrs.T.J.Neill

Sunday: Mrs.Nancy Ellenor McDaniel Trapp died at her home 1 o'clock Sunday after a long illness of
tuberculosis. At the time of her death, Mrs.Trapp was 42 years 3 months of age, and while her
illness had been long and continued, she was always of a cheerful nature, never boring her friends
with her troubles, and having a tendency to look on the bright side of life. Before being
permanently confined to her home, Mrs.Trapp was numbered among the handsomest women in this city,
and her friends were only limited by her acquaintances. The funeral was held on Monday at 5 o'clock
in the evening with interment in the City cemetery, services conducted by Rev.G.G.Davidson of the
First Methodist Church. Many beautiful floral offerings covered the last resting place. Surviving
the deceased in her mother, Mrs.McDaniel, who is now seriously ill, her husband, Syd.B.Trapp, and
her son Syd McDaniel Trapp. To these are extended sincere sympathy. The honorary pall bearers
were:Messrs.R.L.Pettus, S.H.Mann, J.D.Baugh, E.A.Rolfe, Gazzola Vaccaro, and L.C.Marshall.
09/26/19 DYE REUBEN G. 1878 9 25 1919 CITY Reuben G.Dye, Tax Commissioner Dies: The following
account of the death of Reuben G.Dye at Little Rock yesterday, Sep.25,1919, is taken from the
Gazette of today: Reuben G.Dye, aged 41, Chairman of the Arkansas Tax Commission died at a local
hospital at 9:30 a.m. yesterday morning. He had been ill about two years of tuberculosis. Mr.Dye
spent several months in the Tuberculosis Sanatorium at Booneville, returning to Little Rock in July.
Since then he has been undergoing treatment in a local hospital. The body will be sent this morning
to Forrest City by Healy & Roth for burial in the City Cemetery. Mr.Dye came to Little Rock from
Forrest City about 20 years ago, be become a clerk in the office of the state land commissioner. He
served under three or four commissioners, and was chief deputy under L.L.Coffman four years before
his election as commissioner, in 1910. Mr.Dye held the office two terms, being elected both times
without opposition. Shortly after leaving the land commissioner's office, which later was changed to
the Dept. of State Lands and Highways, Mr.Dye was appointed in Dec.1914, by Governor Hays to fill
the un-expired term of David A.Gates, as a member of the State Tax Commission. April 1,1915, he was
re-appointed by Gov.Hays for six years. His term would have expired in 1921. Rev.J.R.G.White
conducted the ceremony at 3 p.m. today.
09/26/19 GREENE NAT 1854 9 25 1919 UNK Coroner S.P.McDaniel was called Thursday to hold an
inquest over the body of a man killed by a work train of the Rock Island, near Heth, 15 miles east
of the city. The man was about 65 years of age; upper teeth protruding, with two teeth missing. He
was unknown except for a receipt found in his pocket signed with the name Nat Greene. Carelessness
on the part of the deceased was determined to be cause of his death. The railroad was exonerated.
10/03/19 ADKINS W. A. UNK 9 25 1919 BROWN Many Killed in Elaine Riot: Two white men dead, one
white soldier wounded, and ten negroes killed, was the toll yesterday of the race riot at Elaine,
which started Tuesday night with the killing of W.A.Adkins, special agent of the Missouri Pacific
Railroad at Helena. Five hundred troops from Camp Pike were brought in to control the situation.
Adkins was formerly employed with Geo.F.Parker Furniture Co. here. His remains were brought here for
burial yesterday, at Brown's graveyard. He is survived by his wife, three children, and other
relatives.
10/03/19 WILSON EARNESTINE MISS 1903 9 24 1919 HUGHES The funeral of Miss Earnestine Wilson
was held at 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon, with interment in the Hughes cemetery, services conducted
at the cemetery by Rev.J.R.G.White of the Baptist Church. Miss Wilson was 16 years of age, the
daughter of County Superintendent of Schools, J.M.Wilson, and died Wednesday, Sept.24,1919 at the
Baptist hospital in Memphis as a result of an operation for an abscess of the brain, from which she
never recovered. She had been ill about three months. Miss Wilson was a sophomore in High School,
and was a bright student, as well as being possessed of a lovable disposition, which made her many
friends.

died at her home Friday night, Sep.19,1919, was buried Saturday afternoon with interment in the City

days old at the time of her death.
10/03/19 McCUTCHEN ROSE MARY 3 1918 9 1919 CITY Rose Mary McCutchen, daughter of Mr.and
Mrs.Will McCutchen of Widener, was buried at 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon, interment in the City
Cemetery, services conducted by Father Norton of the Catholic church. The deceased was 18 months
old, and her passing out is keenly felt by the bereaving parents to whom is extended sincere
sympathy.
10/10/19 DEVAZIER MOLLIE MRS ELLIS 9 25 1886 10 3 1919 HUGHES Memorial: On the evening of
Oct.3rd, 1919, the death angel entered the home of Mr.Henry Devazier and bore away the spirit of his
wife, Mrs.Mollie Devazier who had been ill for several months, her condition becoming more serious
until death claimed her. Mrs.Devazier was the daughter of Mr.and Mrs.Tom Ellis, two well known and
highly respected citizens of Jericho, and was born Sep.25,1886, married to Henry Devazier on
Dec.22,1900, making their home in Jericho. Mrs.Devazier was a loving wife and sweet mother, and
being conscious until the last, she welcomed with a smile all who came to see her and told them she
was better. Surviving are her husband and seven children, to whom we extend our deep sympathy.

11/20/19 BOBO PATRICK J. UNK 11 1919 UNK The Passing of Bobo: Coroner McDaniel was called
Monday morning to hold an inquest over the body of a man found in a vacant cabin two miles west of
Palestine, on the Rock Island railroad. The coroner immediately recognized the corpse as Patrick
J.Bobo, an old itinerant printer, who usually spent his winters in Forrest City, also proven by
letters and papers found on the body. The verdict of the inquest was "died from pneumonia, caused by
exposure." Bobo passed through Forrest City Wednesday, two weeks ago, and the supposition is that he
was in the cabin three or four days before death. They found the name of his mother in Oklahoma
City, whom they notified. Bobo was well known to many persons in the city. Was well educated, and an
interesting conversationist. He was a victim of "Wonderlust", and not being content any length of
time in one place. Peace be unto his ashes.

three year old daughter of Mr.and Mrs.James R.Bussey, died Saturday morning, Nov.28,1919, after an

Dead: The city was saddened Christmas morning by the announcement of the death at 6 a.m., of
Mr.Fenner Laughinghouse, Sr., one of the city's most respected and honored useful citizen. Deceased
had enjoyed good health up to the day prior to his death, when he fell, while fixing a Christmas
tree for his grandchildren. Though complaining of bruises, his condition was not thought alarming,
at that time. Death is attributed to heart trouble, intensified by the fall. Funeral services will
be held Friday morning at the Mt.Vernon cemetery, conducted by Rev.J.H.O'Bryant, with the following
as pall bearers: Active, R.H.Payne, A.C.Bridewell, A.B.Nimocks, J.E.Ferguson, R.C.Eldridge, and
C.L.Simmons. Honorary: J.D.Baugh, E.A.Rolfe, and W.F.Perkins. Deceased is survived by his widow and
the following children, Fenner Jr., Mrs.Fred Jones, Mrs.J.E.McCurdy, two sisters, Mrs.J.E.Eldridge,
and Miss Anna Laughinghouse, and several grand children. Dec.2, of last year was the golden wedding
anniversary. Deceased was born in Alabama in 1846, but came to Arkansas in 1858, and has resided
here continuously from that date. He has held many positions of honor and trust, among them Clerk of
the Court. At the time of his death, he was the chief accountant for the firm Brandon & Baugh. When
Mr.Laughinghouse came to Arkansas, the only railroad was the short line from Memphis to Madison.
