d/o Thomas D CARNALL & Cathrine "Kate" E HOWISON of Virginia.

Birth: 1st of two known children near Warrenton, Fauquier county, Virginia,
where her family were reportedly very prominent, ~ ~ date unknown however:
"Andrea CANTRELL [formerly of University of Arkansas] has conducted research on
this topic at the Fort Smith Public Library. She has concluded that Ella
CARNALL was 32 years old at the time of her death and was born in September of
1861."

Miss CARNALL was called an excellent student, successful teacher and known for;
"her exalted attainments as a scholar and her modest worth as a follower of
Christ."

As of 27 February 2013 the following was made availble by Pauline HALE, to wit:
10 January 1938, Gomer GOWER interviewed Annie Lee (Carnall) MATHIES's younger
sister of Ella Howison CARNALL, at her home in Wister, La Fore county, Oklahoma
obtaining following information.

Father; Thomas D CARNALL birth Virginia died 1865 and mother; Catherine E
HOWISON birth Virginia, death 1872, leaving two orphaned daughters whose aunt
Elizabeth CARNALL in 1872, year their mother died, brought them west to near
Fort Smith, Sebastian county, Arkansas where Wharton Carnall was living on the
Mazzard Prairie. NOTE: Wharton CARNALL was name in interview however he also
being son born 1862 of John CARNALL (could (?) be John's unknown middle name or
a sixty plus year lapse of memory) so it is assumed Col John CARNALL was the
care giver of the orphaned sisters.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Reportedly; her father, Thomas D CARNALL, 4th of four known children, a
confederate solider, was killed towards the end of the Civil War in 1865 ~ ~ her
mother, Catherine "Kate" E HOWISON, 1st of four known children, died 1872,
making Ella and younger sister, Annie, orphans. Its believed they were taken
west during year their mother died by their aunt Elizabeth, head of household on
1870 Federal census, to her younger brother, their uncle, Colonel John CARNALL,
a well to do newspaper publisher in Fort Smith, Sebastian county, Arkansas is
said to have taken them in to raise and educate.

Ella is documented as a freshman in 1877 among twenty-nine others within the
Fouth Report of Arkansas Industrial University (AIU). Its said she graduated in
Class of 1881 recieving her Bachelor of Art degree. She worked in Preparatory
Department under president General Daniel Harvey HILL (1881-1884), honored with
her Master of Arts degree before he was 'abruptly' replaced by the Board of
Trustees during commencement of 1884 (11 July 1884 private (amongst 40) letter
by Mrs V L GRAY ~ (MC-1618)). Ella had among her students a young, Carl Raymond
GRAY (1867AR-1939DC).

Following the event where all AIU professors were relieved of their positions in
1885, said to be brought forth by Gen HILL's unhappy followers the year after
his 'abrupt' replacement. Ella is then found 1885/6, serving in Fayetteville's
first public built school building, ie: Washington under Carl's father, also
relieved of his many AIU duties & positions, Colonel Oliver Crosby GRAY (1832ME-
1905AR) (later to become Fayetteville's mayor), she, along with Anna PUTMAN
(1855AR-1927AR) of first AIU class, Class of 1876 and four other ladies, then
said to have taught in Fort Smith's school system, then at Baird college,
Clinton, Henry county, Missouri under president Mrs Priscilla BAIRD, next to the
University of Michigan (where GRAY's wife's brother, Raymond Cazallis DAVIS
(1836ME-1919MI) was its most innovative and longest serving librarian, 1877 to
1905), receiving her Ph D degree, then back to Arkansas Industrial University
1891 (which became University of Arkansas in 1899) last in 1893 an associate
professor till her untimely 1894 death.

It was written; "Ella in personal appearance was a slender, graceful blonde,
always tastefully and handsomely dressed and she moved among the leading
families."

Arkansas 1871-1948.

afore written, assistant to Colonel Oliver Crosby GRAY in the first built city
public school building Washington, constructed because of the persistent joint
efforts of Colonels, Lafayette GREGG and Oliver Crosby GRAY active members of
the Fayetteville's school board.

CARNALL HALL, built in her honor at a cost of around $15,000, designed by a most
distinguished Charles Louis THOMPSON of Little Rock, constructed same year as
was GRAY HALL, honoring, over twenty year veteran AIU professor of Civil
Engineering & Mathematics plus a multitude of other well preformed duties,
Colonel Oliver Crosby GRAY, her's as, University of Arkansas' first women's
dormitory, completed around 1906 at Maple street & Arkansas avenue (465 north
Arkansas avenue), now second oldest building on campus.

October 2001, the school's board of trustee's action rather than razing it like
was done in 1966 of GRAY HALL, provided for it to be converted into a 50 room
hotel and restaurant, now known as The Inn at Carnall Hall.
