Obituary
JAMES ARNOLD CRAWFORD
	James Arnold Crawford, a former resident of Waldron, was born July 
1, 1914 in Magnolia, Arkansas to the late W.F. Crawford and Rena Aubrey 
Crawford.
	He attended the Magnolia schools, graduating in 1932. He attended 
Magnolia A&M one year.
	He was married to Mary Elizabeth Neill, of Waldo, on December 22, 
1939. To this union there were two daughters born. They had one daughter 
through adoption, Sandra Kay Garrison, who preceded him in death.
	He served as sales manager of J.E. Speer Lumber Co. of Stamps, 
Arkansas and Waldron Lumber Co. He was a retiree of Deltic Timber of 
Waldo, Arkansas. At the time of his death, he was a resident of Cherokee 
Village, Arkansas.
	He was baptized into his Lord in 1926 in Homer, Louisiana. He 
served as an elder in the Waldo Church of Christ and the Waldron Church 
of Christ.
	He departed this life on June 24, 1998 in his home in Cherokee 
Village. He leaves his devoted wife and best friend, Elizabeth, of 
Cherokee Village; two daughters: Ann Preston, of El Dorado and Becky 
Jennings, of Jonesboro; two sisters: Eloise Kelly Lucile Staggs, of 
Magnolia; one brother, Aubrey, of Bossier City, Louisiana.
 	His cherished grandchildren are David Preston, of Del Mar, 
California, Jonathan and Matthew Preston, Corey and Jamie Jennings, 
students at Harding University, and Leah Garrison, of Broken Arrow, 
Oklahoma; two great-grandchildren: Dallas and Noah Preston, of Plano, 
Texas.
	Funeral service was held in Waldo at Lewis Funeral Home. Burial 
will follow at Columbia Cemetery in Waldo.

BILLY L. HARRISON
	Billy L. Harrison, 66, of Huntington, died Saturday, June 27, 1998 
in a local hospital. He was a retired saw mill worker.
	Graveside service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July I at 
Dawson Cemetery in Milltown, Arkansas.
	Survivors include his wife, Betty, and one brother, Robert Harrison,

COADY "LEON" HUDSON
	Coady "Leon" Hudson, 74, of Waldron, died Tuesday, June 23, 1998 in 
a local hospital. He was a retired logger and a Baptist. He was preceded 
in death by two brothers: William David Hudson and Theodore Rosevelt 
Hudson.
	Funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 25, 1998 
in Martin Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Waltreak Cemetery in 
Waltreak, Arkansas.
	Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law: Judy and Charlie 
Tindall, of Danville and Phyllis and Terry Bewley, of Danville; two sons 
and daughters-in-law: C.L. and Peggy Hudson, of Bluffton and Ricky and 
Gayla Hudson, of Waldron; two sisters: Anna Lea Horn and 0la Phillips,

	Roger Dale Litchford, 49, of Huntington, died Friday, June 26, 1998 
in Greenwood. He was a Pentecostal, a disabled Veteran of Vietnam and a 
member of the American Legion.
	Funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 29, in 
Huntington Westside Pentecostal Church of God with burial at City 
Cemetery in Huntington.
	Survivors include one daughter, Margie Litchford, of Tucson,

Litchford, of Huntington; one sister, Mary Louise Burns, of Huntington;

	Frank M. Green, 88, of Parks, died Monday, June 29 in his home. He 
was a retired cemetery groundskeeper, a member of Garden City First 
United Methodist Church, a veteran and a member of the American Legion.

THEODORE REDING
	Theodore R. "Ted" Reding, 86,of Waldron died Saturday, July 11, 
1998 in a Mena hospital.
	He is survived by his wife, Ruby; two sons: John D. Smoot, of San 
Antonio and Joe H. Reding, of Lyons, Oregon; one sister, Ruby Blythe, of 
Dallas; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
	Mr. Reding served as an Army Combat Medic in W.W.II.  He was 100% 
disabled as a result of injuries received during the South Pacific 
campaigns. He was a lifetime member of the D.A.V., American Legion, 
V.F.W. and the First Baptist Church of Waldron.

OPAL TAFF           
	Funeral services for Opal Taff, 90, of Eakly, Oklahoma were at 2:00 
p.m. on Saturday, July 25, 1998, at the United Methodist Church in Eakly 
with Roger Parker of Eakly officiating.
	Burial was in the Eakly Cemetery in Eakly under the direction of 
the Lockstone Funeral Home of Weatherford, Oklahoma.
	Opal was born on the family farm west of Waldron on October 29, 
1907, youngest of four children of George and Molly (Anderson) Smith and 
died on Thursday morning, July 23, 1998 at the Weatherford Living Center 
in Weatherford, Oklahoma.
	As a child she attended grade school west of Waldron and then 
Waldron High School. She taught all eight grades between her junior and 
senior years of high school
	On November 1, 1926, Opal married Earl Taff, in Benton. They lived 
in Waldron for two years and then came to the Hydro, Oklahoma area to 
farm. They lived and farmed in Hydro, Elm Grove and Eakly area. They then 
moved to the Eakly area in 1941.
	 Opal was active in the Eakly United Methodist Church, holding 
several offices, playing the piano and teaching Sunday school classes. 
She was also active in the Eakly United Methodist Women and the district 
UMW. She was one of the three people instrumental in starting the Eakly 
Senior Citizens' meetings.
	Memorials may be made to the Eakly United Methodist Church.
	Opal is survived by her sons: Ivan Earl Taff, of Fallbrook, 
California and Dale Taff and his wife Neva Jo, of Eakly, Oklahoma; her 
daughter: Mona Jean Suter, of Weatherford, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren: 
Kathy Taff White, of Canyon Country, California, Kenneth Taff, of San 
Francisco, California, Brenda Taff Henry, of Fallbrook, California, 
Sheryl Suter Springer and her husband Rango, of Dumas, Texas, Kim Suter 
Stutzman and her husband Tim, of Weatherford, Oklahoma, Robyn Taff Harris 
and her husband Lance, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Brady Taff, of 
Weatherford, Oklahoma and Dusty Taff, of Eakly, Oklahoma; seven great 
grandchildren: Ivan and Autumn Taff, Janet Henry, of California, Brandon,

           She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl in 1970; her

MARGIE JONES DALTON
	Margie Jones Dalton, 99, of Waldron, died August 6, 1998, in 
Waldron. She was preceded in death by her husband Pat Dalton and a son 
Bert Dalton.
	She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she taught 
Sunday School and was a choir member for many years. Until her retirement,
she was Director of Social Work for Scott County.
	She was a member of the Arkansas State Employees Association; the 
Waldron Business and Professional Women's Club, where she was voted Woman
of the Year; and the Waldron Home Extension Club.
	Funeral Services, under the direction of Martin Funeral Home, were 
Monday at the First Baptist Church. Internment was at Black Springs 
Cemetery at Black Springs.
	Survivors are a daughter and a son: Joann Dozier and J.A. Dalton, 
both of Waldron; six grandchildren: Billy Pat Dalton of Benton, Cissi 
Hamilton of San Francisco, Calif., Susan Adams of England, Miles Dozier 
and Allen Dozier of Waldron, and Bart Dalton, of Owasso, Oklahoma; and 
eight great-grandchildren: Jennifer and Leslie Dalton; Lauren and Layne 
Adams; Berek Dalton; Ashley, Jessica, and Dalton. Dozier.

	Roxie Leona Brothers, 94, of Fort Smith, formerly of Waldron, died 
Saturday, August 15, 1998 in a Fort Smith hospital. She was a homemaker 
and a Baptist.
	Funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 18 in 
Martin Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Mount Moriah Cemetery in 
Waldron.
      Survivors include three daughters: Tressie Reed, of Little Rock, 
Betty Smith, of Story and Shirley Jameson, of Fort Smith; five sons: 
Claudie Brothers, of Nola, Charles Brothers, of Waldron, Vernon and 
Willie Brothers, both of Benton and Buddie Brothers, of Muldrow, 
Oklahoma; 18 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and great-great

     Louveda Frost, 82, of Parks, died Tuesday, August 11, 1998 in a 
local nursing home. She was a homemaker, a member of the Parks Baptist 
Church and a former church pianist.
     Funeral services were on Friday, August 14 at Parks Baptist Church 
with burial at Hawkins Cemetery near Parks.

SHIRLEY B. SEVIER
	 Shirley B. Sevier, 85, of Waldron, died Sunday, August 16, 1998 
in a Waldron Nursing Home. She was a Baptist a retired LPN from Pinewood 
Nursing Home, and a past member of The Eastern Star with a fifty year
pin. She was preceded in death by her parents, William H. and Cordy 
Mayfield, two brothers and two sisters. Her husband, Harlen L. (Bud) 
Sevier was killed in W.W.II.
	Funeral service was at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 18,1998 in 
Martin Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Square Rock Cemetery in Waldron.
	Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law: Don and Joan Sevier,

REV. SIDNEY DWAINE DRAPER
	Rev. Sidney Dwaine Draper, 64, of Waldron, died Saturday, August 22,
1998 in at Sparks Regional Medical Center.  He was a Baptist minister 
who pastored several churches in the Buckner Association, a retired saw 
mill worker, and a member of Hon Baptist Church.
	He was born at Boles on May 11, 1934. He was the son of the late 
Rev. Oliver Sidney and Laura Mandy Draper.
	He was preceded in death by daughter, Darla Draper and sister, 
Wilma Robinson.
       Services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 25 in Martin 
Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Don Nelms, Rev. Johnnie Dorr and Rev. Gary 
Martin officiating. Burial was a Lower Center Point Cemetery near Waldron.
	Survivors include his wife, Dessie Mae, of the home; one daughter 
and son-in-law, Delinda Ann and Joey Fuller, of Greenwood; two sons: 
David Wayne Draper, and Donald William Draper, both of Waldron; mother-
in-law: Marie Newman, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; six sisters: Mildred

DONALD DAVID THOMPSON
	Donald David Thompson, 55, of Odessa, Florida passed away on August
18,1998. He was born in Brownwood, Texas. He was a manager of a department
store. Mr. Thompson moved to the Tampa Florida area in 1985. He was also 
a member of the First Baptist Church of Lake Charles, Louisiana.
	Survivors include his wife, Patricia Thompson, of Odessa, Florida; 
one son, David Evan Thompson, of Laverne, Tennessee; two daughters: 
Carol Thompson Byrd, of Nashville, Tennessee and Donna Yarborough, of 
Memphis, Tennessee.; his mother, Dorothy Thompson, of Mena; four 
grandchildren.
	Services were August 24 at 2:00 p.m. at the Refuge Baptist Church 
in Story, Arkansas with Bro. Tommy Jones officiating and burial was in 
the Breshears Cemetery in Story under the direction of Thornton Funeral

WILLIAM WALLACE O'NALE
	William Wallace O'Nale, Sr. died February 2, 1998 at Memorial 
Hospital in Jacksonville, FIorida, after a long bout with cancer. Wallace 
was born July 27, 1929 to Nick and Ina O'Nale in Harvey, Arkansas. He 
graduated Waldron High School in 1948 and attended Arkansas State 
Teachers College and S.E. Oklahoma A&M, then enlisted in the Air Force. 
He assumed the duties of General Agent for the John Hancock Life 
Insurance Co. in 1964 and retired in 1991.
      Wallace was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert 
Wayne (his twin), Harold and Robert Harry; sisters: Louise and Muriel. 
     	He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Maryanne; his sons and 
daughters-in-law: William W. O'Nale, Jr. and Ann and Bryan H. O'Nale and 
Joy; his grandchildren Michelle, Lindsay, Ashley and William III; one 
brother, John Paul, of Beebe, Arkansas; numerous nieces and nephews; 
sisters-in-law: Grace and Ruby. 
	A service will be held at the family burial plot in Monroe Cemetery,
September 5, 1998 at 11:00 a.m. for friends and family.

MYLA MAE SMITH TAYLOR
	Word has been received of the death of a former Scott County 
resident. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 11, 1998 at the 
Winans Funeral Home Chapel with Lindsay Paty officiating. Burial followed 
in the Maysville Cemetery under the direction of John Williams of Winwis 
Funeral Home in Maysville.
	Myla Mae Smith Taylor was born April 1, 1905 in Scott County to 
Charley and Minerva Pendergraft Smith and passed away Thursday, July 9, 
1998 at the Norman Regional Hospital at the age of 93.
	Mrs. Taylor had been a long time resident of this area. She married 
Jim Taylor on May 14, 1922 at Freedom. Together they moved from Arkansas 
to Paoli in 1932 and to Maysville in 1953. The family farmed and Jim also 
worked for Narramore Construction. Myla worked at Pat's Plants in 
Maysville. In 1926 she joined the Freedom Baptist Church at Freedom and 
more recently attended the Victory Baptist Church in Pauls Valley.
	Survivors include one daughter, Velma James, of Lindsay, Oklahoma; 
three sons: Francis Taylor, of Pauls Valley, James, of Maysville and Glen 
of Ft. Worth, Texas; one brother, Edward Smith, of Phoenix, Ariz.; two 
sisters: Florence Millsap, of Hinton, Oklahoma and Juanita Eaton, of 
Modesto, California; 16 grandchildren, 43 great- grandchildren and 14 
great-great grandchildren.
	She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Taylor in 1982; two 
brothers: Otis and Esque Smith; two sisters: Mozel and Wanda and 
grandchildren: Zachary, Michael and Joan.
	Area survivors include Maudie Taylor, sister-in-law, and several 
nieces and nephews.

LAURA MAE DAVIS
	Laura Mae Wooley-Jenkins-Jones Davis, 66, of Ririe, Idaho passed 
away on August 19,1998 at Columbia Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center 
in Idaho Falls, Idaho of heart complications.
	Laura was born on August 16, 1932 at Tridell, Utah to Arlo A. 
Wooley and Mabel Darling Wooley.
	She married Edward Wayne Jones, Sr. on September 2, 1949. They were 
later divorced in August 1979. She married John Norman Davis on November 
11, 1980.  Both husbands preceded her in death.
	Survivors include her five daughters and sons-in-law: Mae Bailey 
(Harold), and Dorothy Birch (Morgan) of Ririe, Idaho, Ramona Bosworth, of 
Yakima, Washington, Ruby Jones (Harry Burke), of Idaho Falls, Idaho and 
Wilma Thompson (Larry) of Waldron; three sons: Edward Wayne Jones, Jr. 
(Mary Jane Strickland) of Caldwell, Texas, Benjamin Jones (Lorna 
Cotterell), of Ririe, Idaho and Pete Davis (Neta), of Idaho Falls, Idaho; 
two sisters: Erma Brown, of Idaho Falls and Gwen Wooley, of Rifle, 
Colorado; one brother, Donald Jenkins, of Idaho Falls; 46 grandchildren 
and 35 great-grandchildren. 
	Laura was the maternal grandmother of Billy Cox and Gary Cox and 
Lindsy Thompson of Waldron, Bryan Thompson, Amy Thompson Davis (Jason), 
Billy Shane and Dakota Lane Davis, John Thompson and Ben Thompson, of 
Heavener, Oklahoma.
	Funeral service was held on Monday, August 24 at Eckersell Memorial 
Chapel in Rigby, Idaho at 1:00 p.m. Burial was in the Annis Little Butte 
Cemetery.
	Laura lived in Waldron in 1981, 1983 and 1984. She was a frequent 
visitor to the Senior Citizen's Center located at the Memorial Hall.

	Jesse N. Eckle, of Mansfield, died September 1, 1998 in her 
daughter's home in Van Buren. She was a Methodist, was on the Board of 
Directors of Mansfield Senior Citizens, she wrote for the Mansfield 
Citizen newspaper and was a great domino player. She was preceded in 
death by her husband, Ralph Leo Eckle, Sr., her daughter, Margaret 
Singleton, and son, Ralph Leo Eckle, Jr.

	Muffrey Arene "Muffy" Armstrong, 78, of Blue Ball, died Tuesday,

WILLIAM P. (BILL) HARRIS, JR.
	William P. (Bill) Harris, Jr., 78, of Waldron, died Thursday, 
September 17,1998 in his home. He was retired from Harris Motor Company, 
a life-time member of Waldron First Baptist Church, a member of Blue 
Lodge #132 having received his 50 year pin last year, Western Arkansas 
Scottish Rite, a 32nd Degree Mason, and a member of Schmitar Shrine. Mr. 
Harris was a naval aviator during World War II and received two 
presidential citations, having flown missions from two famous aircraft 
carriers, the "Bunker Hill" and "Essex". He was a recipient of the 
Distinguished Flying Cross Medal and attained the rank of Lieutenant. He 
was preceded in death by one grandson, Jeff Richmond.
	Memorial service was at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 19 in 
Waldron First Baptist Church with burial at a later date in the National 
Cemetery in Fort Smith.
	Survivors include his wife, Betty, of the home; three daughters and 
their husbands: Susan and Johnny Richmond, of Glenwood, Patsy and Charlie 
Vaughan, of Waldron and Sally and Jim Butler, of Sulphur Springs, Texas;

CHARLES LEE MAHURIN
	Charles Lee Mahurin, 58, of Waldron, died Tuesday, September 15, 
1998 in his home. He was a logger and attended the Assembly of God Church.
	Funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 18 at 
the Bates Assembly of God Church with burial at Kirk Cemetery in Cauthron.
	Survivors include his wife, Connie Mahurin, of the home; four 
daughters: Brandi and Nikkita Mahurin, of the home, Lisa Brown, of 
Mansfield and Betty Reed, of Waldron; four sons: Greg Duncan, Vince 
Duncan, Aaron Duncan and Rick Mahurin, all of Waldron; two sisters: Mary 
Smith and Dean Stuart, both of Waldron; one brother, Danny Mahurin, of 
Waldron; eight grandchildren.
	Pallbearers were Jerald Hattabaugh, J.T. Helms, Jerry Don 
Hattabaugh, Terry Nix, James Hattabaugh and Mike Nix.

LURAL "CORB" CAMPBELL
	Lural "Corb" Campbell, 81, of Howe, Oklahoma died Saturday, 
September 26, 1998 in a Waldron hospital.	He was a long time resident of 
the area. He attended the Bates Assembly of God Church, was a retired  
carpenter with Lake Wister State Park and a retired farmer. Funeral 
service was at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 29 in First Assembly of 
God Church in Bates with burial at Mt. View Cemetery in Howe, Oklahoma.
	Survivors include one daughter, Wilma Forehand, of Bates; one 
sister, Clemey Kincaid, of Happy, Texas; 2 half sisters: Goldean Keeley, 
of New Mexico and Bonnie, of California; one step-brother, William Lee 
Parker of Tulsa, Oklahoma; three grandchildren: Eudell Forehand, Wayne 
Campbell and Penny Campbell; five great-grandchildren.

CLAY JONES
	Clay Jones,  60, of Welch, Oklahoma died Monday.  Sept. 21, 1998 in 
his home after a sudden illness.
	Mr. Jones was born April 28, 1938, in Scott County. He was a 
Christian. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, serving as a 
paratrooper with the 81st Division. He retired from the Army after 
receiving the rank of first sergeant.
	He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct 
Medal (five awards), Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign 
Medal, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, the Army 
Commendation Medal, Master Parachutist Badge, Bronze Star, and the Armed 
Forces Expeditionary Medal.
	Survivors include a daughter. Paula Jones, of Dallas, Texas; a son, 
Brad Jones, of Dallas, Texas; three sisters: Colleen Herrin, of Commerce,
Oklahoma, Willene Hutchens, of Waldron and Roberta Ornsby, of Moses Lake,
Washington; two brothers: Wendill Jones and Bill Jones, both of Waldron.
	Joint services for Mr. Jones and his brother-in-law, Benjamin Dale 
Herrin, was at 2.00 p.m.. on Friday at Thomas Funeral Home in Welch. The 
Rev. Orville Moody and Brad Conham, pastor, will officiate. Burial will 
be in Rogers Cemetery, west of Welch.
	Pallbearers were Mike Mayfield, Danny Gibson, Rusty Jergenson and 
Kevin Pitcher.
	Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Northeastern 
Oklahoma Veterans' Funeral Detail.

Obituaries
BENJAMIN HERRIN
	Benjamin Dale Herrin, 75, of Welch, Oklahoma died Tuesday, September
22, 1998 at Freeman Hospital West in Joplin, Missouri after a short 
illness.
	Mr. Herrin was born August 20, 1923, ad Cedar Creek. He attended 
school in Parks. He lived most of his life in Scott County and moved to 
Welch 11 years ago from Grangeville, Idaho where he had lived for 2-1/2 
years.  He was a retired farmer and cattleman.
	He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints 
in Commerce, Oklahoma and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Welch. He was a 
U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II and the Korean War, achieving 
the rank of corporal and serving as a machine gunner and tank driver.
	He married Colleen Jones on Oct. 5, 1946 at Gravelly. She survives.
	Additional survivors include two sons, Thomas Herrin, of Bluejacket,
Oklahoma and Troy Dale Herrin, of Seattle, Washington; two sisters: Eva 
Herrin, of San Francisco, Calif. and Vera Herrin Hand, of Claremont, 
California; two step-granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.
	Joint services for Mr. Herrin and his brother-in-law, Clay Jones,
was at 2:00 p.m. on Friday at Thomas Funeral Home in Welch. The Rev. 
Orville Moody and Brad Canham, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in 
Rogers Cemetery, west of Welch.
	Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Northeast 
Oklahoma Veteran's Funeral Detail.

BERTHA SATTERFIELD
	Bertha Satterfield, 91, of Waldron died Friday, September 25, 
1998 in a Waldron nursing home. She was a homemaker and a member of the 
Evening Shade Baptist Church since 1929.
	Funeral service was at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 28 in the 
Evening Shade Baptist Church with burial at Square Rock Cemetery in 
Waldron.
	Survivors include one granddaughter, Leigh Ann Tippit, of Pocola, 
Oklahoma; one grandson and wife: Phillip and Jenna Oliver, of Waldron; 
one great-granddaughter, Jamie McReynolds, of Norman, Okla.; one sister, 
Retha Frasier, of California; two nieces: Ruby Leming and Cheryl Kopf, 
both of Waldron.
	Pallbearers were Lonnie Taff, Buddy Slaten, Dale Kopf, Gary Leming, 
Bill Murry and Worman Owens.
	Martin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Obituaries
JAMES L. TANNER
	James L. Tanner, 80, formerly of Waldron, passed away on September 
22, 1998. Funeral services were held on September 25 at the Demaine 
Funeral Home in Alexandria, Virginia, followed by burial in Quantico 
Veterans National Cemetery. He served his country in W.W.II and was a 
member of the Church of Christ.
	A mechanic by trade since the age of 12, Mr. Tanner eventually 
owned and operated his own "Tanner's Garage" in Waldron. He retired in 
1980 to live the good life on his cattle farm.
	However, due to his wife's, Eulane S., failing health, the Tanners 
moved to Alexandria in 1992 to live with their daughter, Yvonne, and her 
family.
	Mr. Tanner was preceded in death by his wife, Eulane. His survivors 
are: his daughter, Yvonne; his granddaughter and great granddaughter, 
Gwendolyn M. and Stephanie M. Shoemaker; and his grandson, Terrence L. 
Tucker.
