Charles Dawson & Family

Charles Dawson was born in Illinois about 1810 and apparently stayed
there until 1838. He then went to Clay Co. Missouri. By 1850 he was in
Sugar Loaf Twp. of Sebastian Co., Arkansas. He probably had two wives,
but the one who came to Arkansas with the family was Hester A. Unknown.
She was born about 1823 and died 30 Sep 1877 near Barber, Arkansas where
they lived. She is buried in Piney Log Cemetery, Charles is probably
there also; but has no marker.
The oldest known child was Hiram P. Dawson born Ca. 1830 while they
were in Illinois, his wife Adoline and children lived near Abbott at
least until 1870. Their children were Emma born about 1858, John born
about 1859, Thomas born about 1862 and Zedock born in 1869. Adoline is
listed as a widow in the 1870 Census, Hiram may be buried at Piney
Log too.
Peter Dawson, who was born Ca. 1834 in Illinois, and married Arneth
Glisson the daughter of Finis Glisson and Granddaughter of Thomas Glisson,
who came to Scott Co. in 1839. He went back to Illinois with his
brother-in-law shortly after 1860 to join Union Forces there and was
killed at LaGrange Tenn. 09 Jan 1863. Arneth remarried, but I don't know
who. (See Pension records for more information.)
Betsy A. Dawson was born 23 Apr 1838 in Illinois, she had three
husbands. Benjamin Cowling, Jesse W. Davis, and Weslsey Burnett. Her
family lived primarily in Cowlington, Oklahoma and the Fort Smith area.
She died 01 Jan 1916 and is buried in Oak Cemetery at Fort Smith.
Sarah Jane Dawson was born about 1839 in Missouri. She married
Joseph Irvin Martin, the brother-in-law that Peter joined the Union
Army with. Joseph's whole family returned to Illinois at that time, but
Peter seems to be the only other Dawson that went with them. Sarah Jane
and her family returned to Arkansas sometime before 1870 and lived for
awhile on the Dawson property near Barber, however they soon went to the
Fort Smith area and stayed. She died 06 May 1902 and is buried at Laird
Cemetery in Cavanaugh.
Elizabeth Walters Dawson was born Ca. 1840 in Missouri. I know
nothing else of her.
Mary A. George Dawson was born in May 1844 in Missouri. She married
William H. Taylor, Sr. and her family resided in Fort Smith. She died
12 Sep 1920 and is buried at Oak Cemetery in Fort Smith. Her son
William H. Taylor, Jr. was a Deputy Marshall for Isaac Parker, Captain
Of Police in Fort Smith.
The younger children appear to have remained in the Fort Smith
area, because Charles and Hester went into town and took the girls to
weather the civil war. They were at the age to marry and apparently
stayed with their husband's families, instead of returning to Scott Co.
There may have been older children in the Scott Co. area, that I am just
not aware of. Please contact me with additional information or for
additional information. I have much more on the children who stayed in
the Fort Smith area, because the records exist.
