Alan Jackson, 81, of Hattiesburg, Miss., died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006.

He was born Feb. 6, 1925, in Cotter in Baxter County to Kent Jackson and Edith
Fay Hopkins Jackson.

Mr. Jackson attended schools in Cotter and West Memphis. He met his wife, Helen
Lorene Wilkey while in college in Little Rock. He received a Bachelor of Science
degree and master's degree in geology from Louisiana State University. He held
the office of eminent archon president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at the Epsilon
chapter at LSU and received the Order of the Phoenix Award from Sigma Alpha
Epsilon for his contributions and assistance with the chapter at the University
of Southern Mississippi. He joined Humble Oil and Refining Co. in Chico, Calif.,
and worked in New Orleans and Hattiesburg, Miss. He was a consultant in the oil
industry until he retired. He was a member of the American Association of
Geologists, past president of the Mississippi Geological Society, and a member
of the Rotary Club, Woodmen of the World and Benevolent Protective Order of the
Elks No. 599. In 2000, he was King of the Krewe of Elks, XXXIV. He was a member
of Main Street United Methodist Church in Hattiesburg, Miss.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his stepmother, Martha Vaughan
Jackson Mashburn of Little Rock.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Helen Lorene Wilkey Jackson; one son,
Kent Clovis Jackson and wife Kim of Purvis, Miss.; one daughter, Margaret Fay
Jackson Arant and husband Dr. Billy of Chattanooga, Tenn.; three grandchildren,
Peter J. Arant of Knoxville, Tenn., Dr. Meghan Arant of Cincinnati, Ohio, and
Brooke Thompson of Purvis, Miss.; and two brothers, Milton Vaughan Jackson and
wife Marie of Arp, Texas, and David K. Jackson and wife Linda of Bryant and
their children.

Graveside service was scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Walnut Hill Cemetery in
Cotter, with the Rev. Randall D. Ludwig officiating. Arrangements are under the
direction of Roller Funeral Home in Mountain Home.
