Note: This is my grandmother in Mom's side of the family. Our family lived with
her most of my growing up life. She took care of me and my sister, Eva, when our
parents were sick and unable to do it. She taught me to cook, sew, crochet, can
food and many other things. I guess the two things I really didn't like to do
were clean house and iron. She insisted that I do both. I still am not crazy
about doing either one. She pieced many quilt tops for members of our family.
That was how she spent her days in her old age. I can remember when I was in
High School, that she wanted every needle she had threaded before we went to
school. She couldn't see very well by then and couldn't do it herself. She would
use the longest piece of thread I have ever seen anyone use, just so she would
have enough to last until we returned home in the afternoon. I still have
several tops she pieced that I have never had quilted. When my son and daughter
married, I helped their Grandmother, Syble Boyd, quilt each of them one of these
tops that thier great grandmother had made.

Note: I knew Miss Lizzie Ruff when I was growing up in Dover. She was a very
petite person and loved to read. When she died, her family had an estate
auction, which included much of her parents property. There were many very nice
pieces of antique furniture and dishes. She also had saved many of the old
newspapers from Pope County. We owe her much for saving these old newspapers.
They were microfilmed by the Arkansas History Commission at Little Rock. Mr. J.
B. Lemley used them to extract the old newspaper obituaries. If I have noted an
obituary in these lists, you have Miss Lissie to thank for them or we would not
have them now. I can remember measuring myself against Miss Lizzie to see if I
was grown up yet. She would always tease me about it.
