Friday—4-2-93
Shaquille Demetri SCOTT, ten months, of Camden, died Thursday, March 29, at an
El Dorado hospital.  He was born June 25, 1992 in Camden.  Survivors include his
parents Anazette Scott and Stephen Avery of Camden and two brothers Keitron
Scott and Stephen Avery, Jr of Camden.  Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at
New Calvary COGIC with Elder Wallace Johnson officiating.  Burial will be in St.
Mary Cemetery by Williams Funeral Home.

Thursday—10-10-91
Curtis Henry BENNETT of Camden, died Saturday, Oct. 5, in Little Rock.  He was a
member of Shiloh Baptist Church, a veteran of WWII and a graduate of the
University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.  Survivors include his wife Mrs. Hermize
Bennett of Camden; two daughters Valarie Elaine of Detroit and Kenee Michelle
Bennett of Houston; and four brothers Otis Bennett of Gary, Ind., the Rev. Grady
Bennett of Camden and Richard and Finis Bennett, both of Detroit.  Funeral will
be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. H. Earl Anderson
officiating.  Burial will be in Eternal Rest Cemetery by Williams Funeral Home.

Thursday—10-10-91
Mozell GOSHEN, 63, of Camden, died Monday, Oct. 7, at a Little Rock hospital.
Born Sept. 30, 1928, she was a member of New St. Mary Baptist Church.  Survivors
include four sisters Ozell Brown of Omaha, Neb., Betty Hudson of Los Angeles,
and Elnora Mahan and Virgie Easter, both of Camden; and four brothers Clarence
Goshen, James Allen Goshen and Rodell Goshen, all of Camden, and Artell Goshen
of Gardenia, Calif.  Funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at New St. Mary
Baptist Church with the Rev. R.L. Palmer officiating.  Burial will be in St Mary
Cemetery by Williams Funeral Home.

Charles R. BROWN, 48, of Mineral Springs, died Friday, Aug. 5, in Murfreesboro. 
Born July 16, 1946, in Schall, he was an employee of LTM Wood Chipping Mill and
a Baptist.  Survivors include his wife Becky Renfroe of Mineral Springs; a son
David Brown of Jacksonville; two daughters Tracey Doherty of Bearden and Kristie
Thomas of Panama City, Fla.; his parents Charles Edward Brown of Mineral Springs
and Erma Lee White of Nashville; six sisters Jo Ann Reese of Winterhaven, Fla.,
Ruth Ann Hamilton of Barron Springs, Mich., Mable Brown and Barbara Green, both
of Nashville, Georgia Bass of Camden and Judy Fay Hicks of Guy; five brothers
Boyd Wayne Brown of Canton, Texas, Jimmy Brown, Edward Ross Brown, Ronald and
Otis Brown, all of Nashville; and three grandchildren.  Graveside services were
at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mineral Springs Cemetery with the Rev. Wayne Murphy
officiating.  Arrangements were by Nashville Funeral Home.

Davelene CHILDERS, 57, of Bearden, died Saturday, Aug. 6, in Jena, La.  Born
July 10, 1937, in Nevada County, she was the daughter of David Copeland and
Gertrude Rae Bustin Butcher.  She was a homemaker and a Methodist.  Survivors
include two sons Jerry York of Gastonia, N.C. and David Childers of Jena, La.;
her mother Gertrude Butcher of Camden; a brother Howard Copeland of Waldo; three
sisters Shirley Bailey of Rosston, Jo Ann Evans of Bryant and Barbara Walthall
of Bearden; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.  Funeral was at 2 p.m.
today at Benton Chapel with the Revs. Jay Culpepper and H.A. Murrell
officiating.  Burial will be in Salem Cemetery at Bearden by Benton Funeral Home
of Fordyce.

Dr. Lloyd JACKS Jr., 45, of Camden, died Friday.  He was a chiropractor and a
Methodist.  He is survived by his wife Shirley Patterson Jacks; one son Trey D.
Jacks of Camden; one daughter Gena Jacks of Camden; his parents Mr. and Mrs.
Lloyd D. Jacks Sr. of Camden; one brother Don W. Jacks of Oklahoma City; two
sisters Betty Claire Peacock of Dumas and Nancy Marie Dawson of Camden; and his
grandmother Mrs. C.R. Pierce of Hamburg.  Funeral was held Sunday at Fairview
United Methodist Church.  Burial was at Memorial Park Cemetery by Proctor
Funeral Home.

Monday—2-11-85
Roscoe C. JENKINS, 95, of Camden, died Saturday.  He was a former caretaker at
Berg Lake and a WWI veteran.  Funeral was held today at Proctor Funeral Home
Chapel.  Burial was in Bethesda Cemetery.

Monday—1-13-64
P.R. LAMBERT, 91, of Prescott, died Friday at his home.  Survivors include two
sons Andrew Lambert of Reader and M.L. Lambert of Prescott; two daughters Mrs
Lilly Mae Quinn and Mrs. Alice Florece, both of Reader; three brothers Bob and
John Lambert of Louisiana and George Lambert of Mississippi; eleven
grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.  Funeral was at 2 p.m. Sunday at
the Reader Baptist Church.  Burial was at Turner Cemetery at Reader by Camden
Funeral Service.  Rev. Doyle and Rev. Jewell Murry officiated at the funeral.
Pallbearers were Albert Radford, Ollie Greere, Tom Barlow, Tom Brison, L.S.
Milderbrandt, Lindel Knight and Joe Horton.

Monday—12-30-57
Mrs. Pearl A. BLACK, widow of Jessie Franklin Black and a former resident of
Camden, died in a Shreveport, La. hospital at 8:25 p.m. Saturday after a long
illness.  Mrs. Black had been living in Shreveport for the past three and one
half years.  She was born in Missouri February 9, 1886, the daughter of Gus and
Mandy Gill Smith.  Before moving to Shreveport she lived in Camden for about 23
years.  She was a member of the Methodist Church.  She is survived by four sons
Clyde and Charles Black of Shreveport; Claude and Billy Joe Black of Camden; two
daughters Mrs. Thadeus Wade and mrs. J.H. Cunningham of Shreveport; two brothers
Harry Smith of Calion and Will Smith of Fordyce; three sisters Mrs. L.E. Kindle
of Sterling, Ill., Mrs. Grace Mays of Jacksonville, Fla. and Mrs Elbert
McFarland of Waskom, Texas and twelve grandchildren.  Funeral services were to
be at 2:00 p.m. today at the First Methodist Church by Revs. Francis A. Buddin,
W. Neil Hart and George Ross of Shreveport.  Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery by
Proctor Funeral Home.  Active casket bearers were Albert Bell, John Morris,
Billie Cunningham, George C. Smith, Charles H. Bradshaw and Charles H. Moore.

Wednesday—11-12-47
Luther H. COX, 64, of Cullendale, died in the Camden Hospital at 9:10 p.m.
Tuesday after a short illness.  He is survived by his wife; five daughters Mrs.
Cleo Pipkin of Cullendale, Mrs. Marie Lewis of Mount Holly, Mrs. Vera Horner of
Camden, Mrs Mildred Hollingsworth and Miss Ruth Cox of El Dorado; two sons J.K.
Cox of Freeport, Texas and M.L. Cox of Camden; one sister Mrs. Della Cox of
Houston, Texas; and 11 grandchildren.  Funeral arrangements are incomplete, but
services will probably be at 11 a.m. Thursday with burial in Waldrup Cemetery
near Waldo with Mathis Funeral Home in charge.

Friday—4-13-90
Roy HELMS, 61 of Camden, died Wednesday, April 11.  He was a veteran of the
Korean War.  Survivors include his wife Geraldine Helms of Camden; three sons
Emmett Helms and Gary Helms of Camden and James Helms of Houma, La.; a daughter
Victoria Betts of Camden; two brothers James Otis Helms of Wright and Martin
Helms of Elmira and nine grandchildren.  Graveside service will be at 10:00 a.m.
Saturday at Bethesda Cemetery by Proctor Funeral Home.

Friday—4-13-90
Nolan “Red” JEFFERS, 71, of Camden, died Thursday, April 12, at a Little Rock
hospital.  Born Dec. 31, 1918, in Warren, he was the son of Dave and Eunice
Nicholson Jeffers.  A retired employee of International Paper Company, he was a
veteran of WWII, U.S. Army.  Survivors include his wife Mable Belin Jeffers of
Camden; a son Charles Nolan Jeffers of Alma; a daughter Becky Billingsley of
Camden; two sisters Evelyn McMurry of Warren and Mary Lee Kline of Memphis; four
grandchildren and one great grandchild.  Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at
Frazer’s Chapel in Warren with burial in Adams Singer Cemetery by Frazer’s
Funeral Home of Warren.

Friday—4-13-90
Mrs. Augustus ROGERS, 100, of Camden, died Saturday, April 7.  She was a retired
school teacher.  Survivors include a son William Rogers of Camden; four
daughters Marie Tidwell of Rosston, Nominea Brewer and Mary Harris, both of
Camden, and Versie Clark of Santa Monica, Calif.; 40 grandchildren, 76 great-
grandchildren, and 36 great-great-grandchildren.  Funeral will be at 11 a.m.
Saturday at Mt. Zion AME Church with burial in Mt. Zion Cemetery by Williams
Funeral Home.

Tom E. WELCH, 74, of Chidester, died Tuesday, April 3, at Ouachita County
Hospital.  He was a member of Shiloh AME Church of Chidester.  Survivors include
his wife Eugenia Welch of Chidester; a son James Welch of Camden; seven
daughters Clara J. Lindsey of Milwaukee, Mary F. Bursie of Oakland, Calif.,
Maxine Sims, Cleopatria Watson and Carolyn Hayes, all of Camden; Pauline Thomas
of Pine Bluff and Vera Gulley of Bluff City; a brother Charles Welch of El
Dorado; a sister Minnie Parham of Milwaukee; and 13 grandchildren.  Services
will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Shiloh AME Church with burial in
Shiloh Cemetery under the direction of Williams Funeral Home.

Thursday—2-22-90
Calvin J. SMITH, 27, of Waldo, died Monday, Feb. 18(?).  Survivors include his
mother and stepfather Gracie L. and Ocie Howell of Waldo; a daughter Shateah
Smith of Waldo; a brother James E. Smith of Waldo; two sisters Patricia Ann
Givens of Kailua, Hawaii and Gloria J. Young of Rosston; and his grandparents
Grady and Genia Burnell of Waldo and Mrs. Fannie Mae Williams of Camden.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Harrison Chapel Baptist Church in Rosston
with the Rev. Nelson Adair officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery
by Marks Funeral Home of Magnolia.

Mrs. M.A. CROMWELL, 78, died at her home in Buena Vista at 7:10 p.m. Saturday.
Mrs. Cromwell was a native of Kentucky where she was born October 1, 1878.  She
had been living at Buena Vista for the past 40 years.  She was a member of the
Buena Vista Baptist Church.  She is survived by three sons Martin Cromwell of
Camden, Harold Cromwell of Stephens and Robert Cromwell of Tulsa, Oklahoma; four
daughters Mrs. T.R. Bartlett of Glenmora, La., Mrs. R.E. Halliburton of Allen,
Okla., Mrs. J.H. Jordan of Macon, Ga., and Miss Junita Cromwell of Buena Vista;
four brothers Henry Neville of Clinton, Ky., Roy, Loyd and Ewin Neville, all of
Arlington, Ky.; thirteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.  Funeral
services were held at 2:30 today at the Buena Vista Baptist Church by Rev. Gib
Williams and Dr. T.L. Harris.  Burial was in the Stephens Cemetery by Proctor
Funeral Home.  Active bearers were Elbert Landers, Eddie Ross, Seth O’Dell,
Junius Landers, Billy Spears and Francis O’Dell.

Thursday—9-22-88
Beulah Ester HASKINS, 96, of Sheridan and formerly of Gurdon, died Wednesday,
Sept. 14, in the Jefferson County Hospital in Pine Bluff.  She was a housewife
and widow of William Andrew Haskins.  She was a member of Oakgrove Missionary
Baptist Church in Sheridan.  Survivors include her son William Kermit Haskins of
Sheridan, a daughter Bernece Gentles of Gurdon, 9 grandchildren, 21 great-
grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.  Services were at Bethlehem
Cemetery near Gurdon with Frank Tackett officiating, directed by Murry-Ruggles.

Thursday—9-23-88
Frances TRUESDALE, 87, died Wednesday, September 21, in Camden.  Services will
be at 10 a.m. Friday at Proctor Funeral Home Chapel with burial in old Greenwood
Cemetery.  She was a member of the Episcopal Church.  Survivors are two nieces
Mrs. Louis Saxon of Camden and Mrs. John Ochsner of Houston, Texas.

Tuesday—4-3-90
Wirta J. WILSON, 83, of Hot Springs and formerly of Camden, died Monday, April
2.  Survivors include a stepson Jack W. Wilson of Huntsville, Ala.  Graveside
service was at 3 p.m. today at Greenwood Cemetery by Proctor Funeral Home.

Thursday—2-14-52
Mrs. H.L. WARD, 82, mother of Lloyd Ward, local papermill electrician, died
early this morning at her home in Stuttgart.  She had been a lifelong resident
of that city.  Survivors besides the Camden son are four other children:  Clark
Ward of Overton, Tex., Clyde Ward of DeWitt, Hazel of the home and Mrs. Ida
Elliott of Cropsey, Ill.  Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at
Stuttgart.

Monday—4-18-38
Mrs. Jim Word PATTERSON, 34, died in the Camden Hospital at 7:55 a.m. Monday
after an illness of several weeks.  She came to Camden a few months ago from
Brenham, Texas following her marriage to Mr. Patterson, a local resident.
Funeral services will be held at Brenham on Wednesday.  The body was taken there
today.  Besides her husband, she is survived by three sisters Mr. J.W. Loesch of
Houston and Misses Selma and Laura Hahn, both of Brenham; three brothers Edward,
Robert and Walter Hahn of Brenham.  Proctor’s is in charge of arrangements.

Thursday—1-7-82
Mrs. Lois Johns TULLOS, 81, of Warren, died Jan. 2 at the Bradley County
Memorial Hospital.  She was the widow of Jasper Henry Tullos and a member of the
First Presbyterian Church of Warren.  She is survived by a son Earl Tullos of
Knoxville, Tenn.; three daughters Mrs. Helen Smith of Austin, Texas, Mrs.
Katherine Patton of Camden and Mrs. Mary Sue Bynum of Leland, Miss.; three
sisters Mrs. Verna Kenner of Pleasanton, Calif., Mrs. Iva Rudesheim of Memphis,
Tenn. And Mrs. Alma Sands of Houston, Texas; eight grandchildren and five great-
grandchildren.  Funeral services were held Monday at Frazer’s Chapel of the
Chimes with the Rev. Arthur Fogartie officiating.  Burial was at Oakland
Cemetery.

Mrs. Delia Smith ALLEN died at her home in Stephens Wednesday night.  She is
survived by her husband R.B. Allen; a son Joe of Wink, Texas; her daughters Mrs.
J.P. Hollis of Wink and Mrs. D.S. Riley of Big Springs, Texas, Mrs. R.W. Cooper
of Tuscaloosa, Ala. and Misses Ethel and Martha Allen of Stephens; and two
sisters Mrs. A. Foster and Mrs. H.L. Curry and a brother Carl D. Smith, all of
Stephens.

Monday—8-29-38
Neal PRINCE, brother of Malvern and Homer Prince and Miss Lela Prince, all of
Camden, passed away Sunday night at his home in Murfreesboro after a month’s
illness.  Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at Bluff
City.  He is also survived by his wife and one son S.P.; and two sisters Mrs.
Rilla Turner of Reader and Mrs. Doyle Heard of Waskom, Texas.

Wednesday—9-27-67
Mrs. Gerald MULLENS, 41, of Longview, Texas died Tuesday in a Longview hospital
following a brief illness.  She was the former Betty Jean Katz of this city.
Mrs. Mullens was a graduate of Camden High School and made her home here for
many years before moving to Texas.  She was a member of the First Baptist while
here.  She is survived by her husband; two sons Tommy and Gary of the home; her
mother Mrs. Ethel Katz of Dallas, Texas; her father Al Katz of Biloxi, Miss.;
and two brothers Alfred Katz of Sacramento, Calif. and Giles Katz of Dallas.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in Longview with Welch’s
Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.  The body will be brought to Camden for
burial and will lie in state at Proctor Funeral Home from 3 to 4 p.m.  Burial
will be at 4:30 p.m. in Memorial Park Cemetery.  The family will be at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. George Bowers on Sharp Drive.

Wednesday—9-27-67
Elizabeth Becker WALT, eight week old daughter of Dr. and Mrs. James Walt of
Little Rock, died Tuesday in Little Rock.  Mrs. Walt is the former Betty Becker
of Camden.  Besides her parents, Elizabeth is survived by a brother James Walt,
IV; her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Russell Becker of Camden and Mrs. James Walt,
Sr. of Altheimer.  Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at Healey and
Roth in Little Rock.  Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. today at
Greenwood Cemetery.

Monday—4-1-91
Mrs. Laddie DAVIS, 74, of Bearden, died Tuesday, March 26, at a Malvern nursing
home.  Survivors include a son Billy Benson of Los Angeles; a sister Ferlie
Caldwell of Bearden and two grandchildren.  The funeral was at 2 p.m. today at
First Baptist Missionary Church with burial in Moss Cemetery by Williams Funeral
Home.

Friday—7-2-43

A.T. BRIAN, 60, died at the Camden Hospital at 3 p.m. Thursday.  He is survived
by his wife; four daughters Mrs. Mary Frances Henson, Mrs. Ester Lynn Wright and
Miss Janis Brian of Camden, Mrs. Gilbert Parish of Little Rock; five sons Dr.
Earl W. Brian of Raleigh, N.C., Morgan Brian, a prisoner of war in the
Philippines, Ross Brian of Strong, A.T., Jr and Bruce Brian of the U.S. Armed
Forces; four sisters Mrs. C.C. Bourland, Mrs. E.M. Daniels and Mrs. A.B.
Crosley, all of Camden, and Mrs. G.W. Newsom of El Dorado.  Services will be
held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Fellowship Church with burial in Pleasant Ridge
Cemetery.  Proctor Funeral Home is in charge.

Friday—3-4-39
R.N. RITCHEY, 77, died at the home of his son R.J. Ritchey at Troy, Ouachita
County, Thursday night at 11 o’clock.  Funeral services were held at 3 p.m.
Friday at Liberty Cemetery.  Mr. Ritchey had lived in Troy for a number of
years.  He is survived by a daughter Mrs. W.C. Creed of Dallas, Texas and a son
R.J. of Troy, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Tuesday—4-28-36
Funeral services for Mrs. J.L. JONES, well-known Ouachita County resident, were
held at the First Baptist Church here at 3:00 p.m. Monday.  Mrs. Jones died
Sunday afternoon.  She has many friends throughout this area.  Active
pallbearers were Abner Fogle, Milos Reynolds, Howard Clayton of Arkansas City,
Britt Moore, Bob Runnels, Herman McMahon, Curtis Morgan and Holmes Greer.
Honorary pallbearers were Jay Newton, Willie Patton Matthews, Will Barnes, Watt
Jordan, W.H. Reynolds of El Dorado, Arthur Ellis, Bob Shelton, Jim Usrey, Walter
Fincher, Leonard Powell, L.B. Smead, Eugene Fearing, W.M. Shaw and J.W. Hecker. 
Mrs. Jones is survived by her husband, three daughters, one brother John Wood of
Camden and several grandchildren.

Friday—3-24-39
Judson PATTERSON, 59, justice of the peace of Ecore Fabre township, former
county treasurer and city clerk of Camden, died suddenly at his home today
following a heart attack.  Justice Patterson had been in perfect health just
prior to the attack and was at his office yesterday.  He was well-known here and
throughout Ouachita County, having served as treasurer from 1912 to 1916.  He
was city clerk of Camden for many years and later served as justice of the
peace.  Mr. Patterson was active in Masonic circles and was a past worshipful
master of the Camden Lodge.  He was also past worthy grand patron of the Order
of the Eastern Star of Arkansas and had held several offices in the local
chapter.  Mr. Patterson was born at Chidester on October 2, 1879, and was a
member of a well-known Ouachita County family.  On June 19, 1900 he married Miss
Mary Stinnett.  He moved to Camden a good number of years ago.  Funeral services
will be conducted at the First Methodist Church at 3:30 p.m. Saturday with the
Rev. J.L. Hoover officiating.  The Masonic Lodge will be in charge.  Proctor
Funeral Home is handling arrangements.  He is survived by his wife, a daughter
Mrs. Esdelle Finch, three sons Jim Word, W.H. and Judson Patterson, Jr and one
sister Mrs. Jay Benton of Sayre, Arkansas.

Thursday—4-2-87
Hugh Olen CHAMBERS, 66, of Kirby, died Wednesday.  He was a retired maintenance
clerk for International Paper Co. and a WWII veteran.  Survivors are his wife
Erma Lou Chambers; three sons Ronnie, Danny and Randy Chambers, all of Kirby;
two daughters Mary Lou Anderson and Martha Barkhimer, both of Camden; two
brothers Bo Chambers of El Dorado and Junior Chambers of Kirby; three sisters
Retta Wilson of Caddo Gap, Jessie Haynie of Amity and Esther Gunter of Warrior,
Ala.; and four grandchildren.  Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at
Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church.  Burial will be in Bear Creek Cemetery by
Davis Funeral Home of Glenwood.

Monday—1-30-61
Funeral services for Mrs. Dora S. DEWS, 82, of Camden, who died in a Sparkman
nursing home Friday, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday at the First Methodist
Church in Coffeeville, Miss.  Burial will be in the Coffeeville Cemetery by
Proctor Funeral Home.  Mrs. Dews, an aunt of C.R. Magness, with whom she had
been making her home for the past seven years, was a native of Bruno, Arkansas
but moved to Mississippi in the 1920’s and lived there until a few years ago.
She was a member of the Methodist Church.  She is survived by a sister Mrs.
Laner Keeter of Harrison; three stepsons Stanford Dews of Como, Miss., Carl Dews
of Tunica, Miss., and Paul Dews of Clarksdale, Miss.; and several nieces and
nephews.

Monday—1-30-61
Henry B. JACKSON, 61, formerly of Camden, died in San Antonio, Texas on Friday. 
Mr. Jackson was a native of Nevada Co., Arkansas.  He had been living in San
Antonio for about six years and worked for a roofing plant there.  He is
survived by his wife Mrs. Ida Jackson of Camden; two sons Clarence and Virgil
Jackson of Camden; one daughter Mrs. Flora Mae West of Rosston; four brothers
Andrew Jackson of Big Springs, Texas, Leo Jackson of Prescott, Leonard Jackson
of Houston, Texas and Hiram Jackson of Rosston; and two sisters Mrs. Voney
Martin and Mrs. Frances Tomlin, both of Prescott.  The body will be returned to
Camden Monday afternoon.  Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the
Willisville Methodist Church (Nevada Co.), conducted by Rev. Leo Smith.  Burial

Asa Franklin DANIEL, 81, of the Bethesda community, died in a local hospital at
4 p.m. Saturday.  Mr. Daniel was a livelong resident of Ouachita County.  He was
born Sept. 9, 1880, the son of Edward and Jane Rogers Daniel.  He was a retired
farmer and a member and deacon in the Bethesda Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife Mrs. Addie Wilson Daniel; a son Garland S. Daniel of
Washington, D.C.; a daughter Mrs. Otho Roe of Camden; three grandsons and a
number of nieces and nephews.  Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. today at
the Bethesda Cumberland Presbyterian Church, conducted by Rev. Dale Gentry of
Pine Bluff and Rev. Robert hall, pastor of the local church.  Burial will be in
Bethesda Cemetery by Proctor Funeral Home.  Casket bearers are the following
nephews: Johnny, Harper and Herschel Brian; Neville and James Daniel and Edwin

Thomas Edgar CREECH, 48, of Norphlet, died Thursday, March 28, in Atlanta,
Texas.  Born Sept. 27, 1942, in Camden, he was the son of John Dillard and
Modell Bethea Creech.  A resident of the Norphlet area most of his life, he was
an electrician for BE&K Construction.  He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member
of Norphlet United Pentecostal Church.  Survivors include his wife Melba Jean
Tippen Creech of Norphlet; two sons Thomas Shane Creech of El Dorado and Jack
Lamar Creech of Norphlet; a daughter Melissa Shone of Norphlet; his mother
Modell Creech of El Dorado; two brothers Jimmy Creech of Camden and Gaylon

of Camden; two sisters Laura Wright and Billie Haynie, both of Conway; two

James Ronald BURTON, 58, of Camden, died Thursday, July 14, at a Little Rock
hospital.  Born July 23, 1935, in Drew County, he was the son of Floyd G. and
Blanch Webb Burton.  He was retired from the U.S. Army and the U.S. Postal
Service.  A member of the Church of Christ, he was a veteran of the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife Lynn McNabb Burton of Camden; his mother Blanche
Burton of Monticello; a brother Reginald Burton of West Monroe, La.; and two
sisters Geneva Byrd of Monticello and Beverly ?inn of St. Mary’s, Idaho.

John Edward HOLT, 83, of Price, Texas (Rusk Co.), died Sunday, Sept. 6, at the
Overton Memorial Hospital in Overton, Texas following a brief illness.  He was
the victim of a heart attack.  Mr. Holt was a former resident of Ogemaw but
moved to Texas 34 years ago. He was a retired oil field employee, a member of
the Church of Christ and a Mason.  He was well-known in Ogemaw, having served
several terms as a justice of the peace and constable.  He was the son of the
late Camelius and Nancy Beard Holt, pioneer residents of the Ogemaw and Troy
area.  Survivors include three sons Colin J. Holt of Price, A.T. Holt of
Fremont, Texas and James E. Holt of Dubach, La.; three daughters Mrs. Gladys
Bridges of Kansas City, Tex., Mrs. Edith Rettig of Overton and Mrs. Louise Boden
of Henderson; two sisters Mrs. Etta Evans and Mrs. Callie Puckett, both of El
Dorado;

a brother James A. Holt of Ogemaw; 17 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

in a local hospital.  Mrs. Hale had been a resident of Camden for many years and

Lovic Richard JACKSON, 57, of Bearden was killed instantly at 4:10 p.m. Monday
near Houston, Texas, where he had been working for the past 30 days as a
carpenter.  He formerly worked at NAD.  Mr. Jackson had finished work Monday and
was on his way to the home of a brother in Tomball, Texas, north of Houston,
when his car collided with a large truck.  Mr. Jackson was born January 16, 1900
in Kentucky, the son of R.E. and Sally Farabrough Jackson.  He moved to Ouachita
County about 39 years ago.  He was a member of the Bearden Methodist Church.  He
is survived by his wife Mrs. Frances Vaughan Jackson; two sons Billy Jackson of
the home and Eugene Jackson of Lackland Air Force Base, Texas; two daughters
LaNelle and Mary Jackson, both of the home; mother Mrs. R.E. Jackson of Camden;

Robert W. COWSER, 75, was found dead at his home Sunday morning, presumably from
a heart attack.  He died sometime Saturday night.  Mr. Cowser was a business man
in this city for more than 40 years.  He owned and operated the Ouachita Drug
Co., the Bennett Drug Co., and at the time of his death was operating the
Chicken Shack on South Main.  He is survived by his wife Mrs. Emma Cowser, a
stepson James Lyman Hill, a daughter Mrs. Bernard Westbrook, two sisters, four
brothers, two grandchildren, and a host of relatives who mourn his death.  He
had many friends in Ouachita County, both colored and white.  Funeral

Joseph Nordin SIMPSON, Jr., 75, of Lafayette, La., died Tuesday, April 30 at his
home.  A native of Greenville, S.C., he was the son of Joseph N. and Cordelia
Moore Simpson.  A resident of Lafayette for the past six years, he was a retired
business man and a veteran of WWII, U.S. Army.  Survivors include his wife Linda
Smith Simpson and a stepson William F. Broadnax of Lafayette; a brother David
Simpson of Dallas and two grandchildren.  Graveside service was at 10 a.m. today
at Lafayette Memorial Park, Rev. Weldon Bares officiating.  Burial was in the

The Rev. Lowery Lemuel SMITH, 64, of Bearden, died Tuesday, April 30.  A Babtist
minister, he was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, Columbia Masonic Lodge

was a veteran of WWII, U.S. Army.  Survivors include his wife Nora Nutt Smith of

Robert Hand JORDY, Sr., 71, of Ridgecrest, Calif., died Friday, Dec. 22, at a
Ridgecrest hospital.  He was a retired housing manager, a veteran of WWII, U.S.

and a member of the United Methodist Church.  Survivors include his wife Euna F.
Jordy of Ridgecrest; a son Robert H. Jordy, Jr. of Fallon, Nev.; one daughter

Joe Carroll MORGAN, 68, of Warren, died Friday, Dec. 29, at Bradley County
Memorial Hospital.  He was born Oct. 21, 1921, at Banks, the son of Samuel and
Carla Mae Hamaker Morgan.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church of
Warren, a Mason, a member of the Jacob Bump Lodge 160 in Pine Bluff and the
Warren Lodge 33, a member of the American Legion and the South East Shrine Club
of McGhee and a retired employee of the Cotton Belt Railroad.  Survivors include
his wife Louise Morgan of Warren; two sons Jerry Morgan of Crossett and Mike
Morgan of Warren; one brother Arthur Morgan of Camden; one half-brother Hollis
Morgan of Pine Bluff; two sisters Marty Riggs of Camden and Betty Sue Barger of
Stockton, Calif.; three half-sisters Myrle Kelley and Madie Linebarrier, both of
Camden, and Pearl Mobley of Warren; and three grandchildren.  Funeral was at 2

Ernest A. LECHNER, 71, died at his home at 158 Agee Ave. at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.
Mr. Lechner was born in Czechoslovakia July 2, 1882.  He has been living in
Camden for the past 14 years and was connected with Camark Pottery as an artist.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.  He is survived by his wife,
two daughters Miss Elsie Lechner and Miss Edith Lechner, both of Camden; one son
Ernest A. Lechner, Jr. also of Camden; one grandson and one granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church
by Rev. Jac Ruffin.  The body will be sent to Toledo, Ohio for burial by Proctor
Funeral Home.  Active casket bearers are George C. Smith, Guy Malcolm, Ritchie

Guy SMITH, 80, of Stephens, died Tuesday.  Mr. Smith was owner of Smith’s Market
and Grocery in Stephens for 25 years prior to his retirement.  He was a Mason, a
veteran of WWI, a member of Stephens United Methodist Church and former
president of the Stephens School Board.  He is survived by his wife Mrs. Stella
Young Smith, a son Guy R. Smith of Stephens, and four grandchildren.  Services
were to be held today at 2 p.m. at Stephens United Methodist Church with burial
at Stephens Cemetery by Smith Funeral Service.

Bob WINTERS, 76, of Reader, died in a Fordyce nursing home at 6:05 a.m. Monday. 
He was employed by the Ouachita County Highway Department for many years.  He
was a lifelong resident of Reader.  He is survived by a sister Mrs. W.F.
Boldbrook of Smackover and by several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services will
be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Reader Assembly of God Church, conducted by

T.C. HEUER, 69, well known Harrison business man, died Sunday.  He was head of
Harrison Federal Savings and Loan and a director in a Harrison bank.  He also
operated a number of shoe stores in North Arkansas and Missouri for many years. 
He is the father of Mrs. John McAlister of Camden.  He is also survived by his
wife and a son David Heuer of Harrison; five grandchildren and four great-

church clerk an usher board.  She was also Worthy Matron of OES Rising Star
Chapter 317.  She is survived by her husband; two daughters Willie Mae Colvin of

Miss Alverna “Verna” Elizabeth LOCKHART, 97, of Camden, died Wednesday, July 5. 
She was a descendant of a prominent pioneer family in Ouachita County.  Born
Nov. 3, 1897, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Lockhart and the
granddaughter of Cicero Harwell and Melissa Hodnett.  An accomplished pianist
and organist, she was a musician at the local opera house and played for the
movie theater during the days of silent movies.  She served as pianist and
organist at First United Methodist Church where she was the oldest member of the
church.  She joined the church in 1911, and church records indicate that she was
the 73rd member.  Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Proctor Chapel with the
Rev. David Prothro officiating.  Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery by Proctor
Funeral Home.

Henry Thomas REYNOLDS, 61, of Route 3, Camden, died Wednesday afternoon in a
local hospital.  He was a lifelong resident of Ouachita County, a retired

Cemetery.  Mr. Reynolds is survived by his wife Mrs. Eloise Weaver Reynolds; one

Mrs. Lillie Bell HARCROW, 70, widow of the late James David Harcrow and a
resident of Eagle Mills for the past eight years, died at 6:00 p.m. at the local
hospital where she had been a patient since Tuesday.  Mrs. Harcrow was born
March 18, 1888, in Calhoun County and lived at Locust Bayou before moving to
Eagle Mills.  Mrs. Harcrow was a member of the Camark Assembly of God Church,
and rearing her large family was her hobby.  Mrs. Harcrow is survived by nine
sons: “Buck” Harcrow, Woodrow Harcrow and John Harcrow of Camden; Elbert
Harcrow, Aubrey Harcrow and R.C. Harcrow of Eagle Mills; Leroy “Buddy” Harcrow
of Sparkman and A.J. Harcrow and Gerald Harcrow of Houston, Texas; five
daughters:  Mrs. Ray Whitten and Mrs. John Coke of Camden; Mrs. Elbert Ellis of
Malvern, Mrs. Leo Broach of Eagle Mills, and Mrs. Jessie Latham of Strong.  She
is also survived by two brothers, Mr. Joe Coppett of Camden and Mr. Cleve
Coppett of Oak Grove, La., and one sister Mrs. Britt Dickinson of Taylor, 27
grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.  Funeral services for Mrs. Harcrow will
be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Faustina Church near Harrell, the Rev. Jewel
Murray and Rev. Jimmy Walker, pastor of Camark Assembly of God Church,

Mrs. Martha Frances ESTERIDGE, 49, of Bradley’s Ferry, four miles south of
Camden, died Sunday night at 9 o’clock.  Funeral services were held at 4 o’clock

is survived by her husband W.S. Esteridge, one daughter Betty Temple of

Mrs. J.F. HANSON, 85, pioneer resident of Camden, died at the home of a daughter
Mrs. Louis Crow in Arkadelphia early Friday morning.  She was a widow of the
late Jim Hanson, well-known Camden building contractor who built many structures
here including the first or southern part of the new present high school.  Since
leaving Camden, she has lived in Little Rock and recently moved to Arkadelphia. 
She is survived by five daughters:  Mrs. Guy Freeling, Mrs. Leo Grant, Mrs. Jack
Sifford, all of Little Rock, and Miss Pauline Hanson and Mrs. Sam Evans of
Dallas, seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.  Funeral services
will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Murray Funeral Home Chapel in Arkadelphia.

Whitney A. HARB, 61, owner of the Buick agency in Camden since November 1, 1953,
died in a local hospital Wednesday afternoon of a heart condition.  Mr. Harb was
born at Rector on February 15, 1893.  Before moving to Camden he was in the
automobile business in North Little Rock, Hot Springs and Pocahontas.  He was a
member of the Episcopal Church in Camden, the Camden Lions Club and the Masonic
Lodge.  Survivors include his wife Mrs. Juanita Stevens Harb, one brother Burt
W. Harb of Little Rock and one sister Mrs. Opal Beckman of Englewood,
California.  The body was taken to the Ruebel Funeral Home in Little Rock on
Thursday afternoon where funeral services will be held at 11:00 on Saturday,
conducted by Rev. W.J.H. Petter of Camden.  Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery
in Little Rock.  Proctor Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.

Edward PYLE, 72, of Bearden, died Monday afternoon in a local hospital.  Hee was
a native of Missouri and had lived in Bearden for the past ten years.  He was a

Dr. Pete LAMBERT, 76, of Calion, died Saturday, Oct. 22 at an El Dorado
hospital.  Born Nov.6, 1918 in Bearden, he was the son of Hughie and Lena
Gregory Lambert.  He was a member of Greater Mt Olive Missionary Baptist Church
and a veteran of WWII, U.S. Navy.  An ordained minister, he pastored Mt Olive
Baptist Church and Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Camden, Oak Grove Baptist
Church in Thornton, Mt Carmel Baptist Church in Warren, First Baptist Church in
Sparkman, Willow Grove Baptist Church in Calion and Greenville Baptist Church in
Stamps.  He served in several offices in the Greater Bradley District
Association, on the association’s banking committee, as usher instructor, dean

moderator of the Columbia District Association in 1979 and served until his
death.  He was a past vice-moderator.  He served as co-chairman of the
Southwestern Arkansas Community Development Corp. board in Magnolia and boys
director and second vice-president for the Consolidated Missionary Baptist State
Convention.  He was a trustee at Arkansas Baptist College, police commissioner
in Calion and a city council member for eight years.  Survivors include his wife
Mr. Ollie Levy Lambert of Calion, a son Lee Freison of San Antonio, Texas, a
daughter Gloria Blake of Oakland, Calif., a stepdaughter Rosetta Porter of
Richmond, Calif., seven sisters:  Ollie Boone, Estella Williams and Louise

local nursing home.  Born Sept. 24, 1913 in Ouachita County, she was supervisor
of housekeeping at Lakeside Hospital for 25 years and a member of Antioch
Baptist Church.  Survivors include a son Lawrence Walker of Detroit, a sister

Camden News—Friday—2-4-38
Jessie HOUSE, 42, of the Salem community five miles south of Bearden, died at 5
o’clock this morning from a self-inflicted wound from a shotgun.  Cause of his
action was not known.  House had been contemplating suicide for several days, it
was reported, and had been taking strong medicines and sedatives.  Before
killing himself he placed heavy blankets and quilts over windows and doors and
then placed the 12-gauge single-barrel shotgun bend his left ear.  The back of
his head was nearly blown off.  A verdict of death from self-inflicted wounds
was returned by O.E. Hamilton, coroner.  Two sons, Jessie Lee and Huie, and two
daughters, Opal and Emma Ruth, survive their father.  Funeral services will be
held Saturday at Salem with the Rev. Bower officiating.  Proctor Mortuary will
be in charge of arrangements.

Roy OGLESBY, 42, of Stephens, son of the late Will Oglesby and Essie Hodge
Oglesby of Troy, died at 4:30 a.m. Friday of a heart attack at the Ouachita
County Hospital.  He was a native of Ouachita County, a member of the Methodist
Church and a veteran of WWII.  He was serving as deputy sheriff and Smackover
township constable and had served as Stephens city marshal in the past.  His
survivors are his widow Mrs. Della Derrick Oglesby, two sons Tommy and Kenny and
one daughter Jana, all of the home; two sisters Mrs. Odie Merritt and Mrs. Eddie
Lampkin of Troy.  Funeral services will be at the Methodist Church of Stephens
at 2:30 p.m. Saturday by Rev. Virgil Bell, pastor.  Lewis Funeral Home of

Mrs. Helen Jean BATES died suddenly in Houston, Texas on Monday at 8 p.m.
according to word received here.  Funeral services were held in Houston on
Wednesday at 10 a.m.  Mrs. Bates was well-known here and had visited here a
number of times and had many friends here.  She is survived by her father Frank
N. Harrison, Sr of Lillie, La.; three sisters Mrs. J.T. Ayers, Sr of Camden,
Mrs. Floyd C. Parker of Atlanta, Tex. and Mrs. Arthur Boschetti of Pine Bluff
and several nieces and nephews.  Mrs. Ayers attended the funeral rites in
Houston.

James Albert HOPKINS, 60, president of the Arkansas Farmers Union and general
manager of the Farmers Union Mutual Insurance Company, died at his home, 2924
Gaines Street, Little Rock, late Saturday.  Although he had been ill several
weeks, he returned home recently from the hospital and death was unexpected.  He
was born November 6, 1896, at Thornton, the son of Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Hopkins
and the late Richard Lambert Hopkins.  Besides his mother, other survivors
include his wife Mrs. Dovie Elizabeth Hopkins; two daughters Mrs. Terrell
Wallace of Baton Rouge, La. and Mrs. G.B. “Pete” Bryan of Hampton; two brothers
Fred S. Hopkins and Richard L. Hopkins, both of Thornton; three sisters Mrs.
W.T. Raney of Pine Bluff, Mrs. Everett Lindsey of Camden and Mrs. Trudie Simpson
of Midland, Texas and six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.  Funeral
services were conducted at the Assembly of God Church at Bearden at 2 p.m.
Monday by the Rev. Jewell Murray, Rev. H.G. Hatton and Rev. J.W. Farrell.
Burial was in Bethel Cemetery by Benton Funeral Home of Fordyce.  Mr. Hopkins
became associated with the Arkansas Farmers Union in April 1944, and under his
leadership the organization increased from less than 1000 to more than 35,000.
He attended rural schools in Calhoun County and graduated from a normal school
at Woodberry in Calhoun County.  He taught school for a time and enlisted in the
U.S. Army at the outbreak of WWI and served more than four years.  Following his
discharge, he engaged in the insurance and mercantile business and joined the
Rural Resettlement Administration in 1933 as Calhoun County supervisor.  He also
served as supervisor of Union County from 1941 to 1944, at which time he
resigned to come with Farmers Union.  He was a teacher and superintendent of the
Sunday School at the Bearden Assembly of God Church.  He was a member of the
Hampton Masonic Lodge, the Little Rock Consistery and was a Shriner.  He was a
member of Roy V. Kinard Post of the American Legion for more than thirty-five
years.

Winnie Wagley STOCKTON, 105, of Camden died Thursday, Jan. 13 at Ouachita County
Medical Center.  She was born May 28, 1899, to a pioneer family from Harrison,
Ar.  She was the oldest member of First Baptist Church in Camden and the widow
of E.C. Stockton.  She is survived by her daughter Jean Smith and husband Alfred
of Camden; grandsons Steven Smith and wife Tommie of North Little Rock and Mark
Smith and wife Brenda of Fort Smith; four great-grandchildren:  Shad Smith and
wife Shannon of Huntsville, Ala., Krista Smith of North Little Rock, Kati
Villani and Brittany Smoth, both of Fort Smith; two great-great-grandchildren
Alyssa and Aubryn Villani of Fort Smith; and her caregiver and companion for

Sue Lyon GRANT, 65, of Little Rock, died Saturday after a lengthy illness.  She
was the widow of Howard W. Grant.  Mrs. Grant attended Camden High School in the
early 1920’s and was a member of the Lyon family for whom Lyons Lane was named. 
She was the late Benjamin Arnold and Mary Lake Lyon and was a former clerk in
the state revenue department in Little Rock.  She was a Methodist.  Survivors
include two sons William Lyon Grant of Houston, Texas and Cmdr Howard W. Grant,
Jr of Lemoore, Calif. Naval Air Station, three sisters Mrs. Frances Kikson of

her husband Clifford Goza, a daughter Linda Sieber, four brothers Johnny,
Whitlow, Robert and Vaughan Neves and four sisters Sewillo McGee, Margaret
Bridges, Betty Talley and Mayflower Brazeal.  She is survived by her son Ralph
Goza and wife Gail of Camden, her daughter Carolyn Landers and husband Ellis of
