Pine Bluff Commercial, Pine Bluff AR, 25 Jan 1966
Melvin C. West, 71, of 1904 Ash Street, died Monday afternoon at Jefferson 
Hospital after an illness of one day.  He was a retired agent for the Humble 
Oil and Refining Company.  Mr. West was born in Star City and was the son of 
the late M. M. and Americus Baily West.  He spent his early years in Star 
City.  He served in the Navy during World War I.  Following his discharge from 
the Navy, Mr. West became an agent for Standard Oil of New Jersey in 
Althiemer.  He lived in Althiemer 30 years.  Mr. West was then made an agent 
in Pine Bluff.  He retired in 1959.  Mr. West was a member of the Robert E. 
Lee Lodge, F. and A. M. at Althiemer.  He was a member of Lakeside Methodist 
Church and the Men’s Bible Class.  Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Rowell 
West; two daughters, Mrs. Gillis Newman of Riverside, California, and Mrs. 
Imogene Wehner of Birmingham, Michigan, a brother, O. L. West of Pine Bluff; 
and five grandchildren.  Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ralph 
Robinson & Son Mortuary by Reverend Raymond L. Franks, pastor of Lakeside 
Methodist Church.  Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.  Pallbearers will 
be Mark Shelton, Garvis Pollard, Gabe Meyer, Doug Pittard, George Clement, Dr. 
Leon Francis, Irwin Leonard, Johnny Anderson, Earnest Maxwell, Sonny Lybrand 
and Fred Fadick.  Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Men’s Bible 
Class at Lakeside Methodist Church.
