William J. Cahill, 88, of Hot Springs died Wed., Dec. 29, 1999, ata local
hospital.
Born June 8, 1911, in New York, he was a Catholic and a U.S. Army veteran.  He
was predeceased by his parents, Timothy and Nora Reidy Cahill.
Survivors include his wife, Durette Cahill of Hot Springs; a daughter and son-
in-law, Carol Ann & Michael Atkinson of Bellevue, Wash.; and two grandsons,
James Allen Collier & Matthew Atkinson.
Services will be 10 a.m. Mon. at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home chapel with Father
Alan Rosenau officiating.      
Burial will be in Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m.

J. K. Groves, 84, of Hot Springs died Sat., Jan. 1, 2000, at a local hospital.
Born Feb. 1, 1915, in Bowie County, Texarkana, Texas, he was a member of Gardner
United Methodist Church and 50-year member of Carpenters Union Local 891.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Groves of Hot Springs; three daughters and
sons-in-law, Mary Ellen and Phil Buck of Glenwood & BethelKay and Roger Kymes &
Patricia Ann and Joe Slyby, all of Hot Springs; five grandchildren; & 12 great-
grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tues. at Gross Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Chris
Hemund officiating.
Pallbearers will be Steven Kymes, Jimmie Buck, Joe Slyby, Jimbo Lee, Bobby
Floyd, Roger Kymes & Phil Buck.
Honorary pallbearers are nieces, nephews, and Dr. George P. Queen and staff.

DEWEY DUNSON
LANGLEY -- Dewey Dunson, 80, of Langley died Fri., Dec. 31, 1999.
Born Dec. 20, 1919, at Langley to James C. & Ellie Lawless Dunson,he was retired
from Texas Instruments, active in Senior Citizens Center in Glenwood, and
selected Senior Citizen of the year in 1988 for outstanding service to the
community and the senior center.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Ruby Lowery Dunson of Langley; two sons
and daughters-in-law, Ronald & Barbara Dunson of Hickory Creek, Texas, and
Michael & Casimire Dunson of Argyle, Texas; two grandchildren, Mitchell Dunson &
Ellie Dunson, both of Argyle; and abrother and sister-in-law, Hobert & Betty
Dunson of Langley.
Services will be 10 a.m. Mon. at Langley Hall Church.
Burial will be in Langley Hall Cemetery under direction of Davis-Smith Funeral
Home, Glenwood.


POLLY LANCASTER   (PICTURE)
Polly Lancaster, 101, of Hot Springs, died Dec. 31, 1999, at a local nursing
home.
Born June 10, 1898, on property now know as Camp Charleston, to Tom Pete and
Mary Catherine Moore, she was a member of First Primitive Baptist Church and
lived most of her life on Albert Pike, where Wal-Martnow stands.  She was
predeceased by her husband, John Henry Lancaster.
Survivors include three nieces, Lessie Osborn of Arvada, Colo., Bessie Wotli of
St. Louis and Celia Sparlin of Wyandotte, Okla.; a newphew, Raymond Moore of
Wichita, Kan.; a sister-in-law, Ova Moore of Hot Springs; a great-niece, Holly
Black of Hot Springs; and great-niecesand great-nephews.
Services will be 2 p.m. Mon. at Gross Funeral Home chapel with theBro. Ersel
Tillery officiating.
Pallbearers will be Robby Hancock, Tom O’Neal and Ben O’Neal.
Honorary pallbearers are Mereck Rowe and medical staff and employees of Quality
Care Nursing Home.
Burial will be in Peak Cemetery, Royal.

MALVERN -- Henry Stanton “Duke” Loftis, 79, of Malvern died Fri., Dec. 31, 1999,
at his home.
Born March 28, 1920, at Utica, Okla., to Daniel Washington & RosieElla Poff
Loftis, he was retired from Reynolds Metals Company as plant superintendent,
U.S. Navy veteran of WWII and member of Third Baptist Church of Malvern.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Cloda Renner Loftis; a daughter, Aileen
Guimond of Ogdensburg, N.Y.; a son, Dennis Stanton Loftis of Magnet Cove; two
brothers, Eurice Loftis of Durant, Okla., andEarl Loftis of Garland, Texas; and
a sister, Mae McWilliams of Durant, Okla.; seven grandchildren & 11 great-
grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Mon. at Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Home with the Rev. Rick
Hyde officiating.
Burial will be Rest Haven Memorial Gardens at Arkadelphia.
Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. today.

Betty Gene Ward McDaniel, 71, of Hot Springs died Wed., Dec. 29, 1999, at her
home.
Born Dec. 16, 1928, at Hot Springs, she was a member of Cedar Glades Baptist
Church and Whittington Eastern Star Chapter 564.  She waspredeceased by her
husband, William E. McDaniel Sr.; her parents, William K. & Belle Willis Ward; a
son, Carl Eugene McDaniel; a daughter,Sarah Belle McDaniel; a granddaughter,
Candy Michelle Heindl; and eight brothers and sisters.
Survivors include a son, William E. McDaniel Jr. of Centerville, three
daughters, Melody McDaniel & Sherry Lunsford, both of Hot Springs and Marsha
Heindl-Satterwhite of Liberty Hill, Texas, nieces, nephews, seven grandchildren
and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be  1 p.m. Mon. at Crestview Memorial Park with the Revs. Frank
Thurman & Curtis Stillwell officiating.

local hospital.
Born March 16, 1922, at Oktaha, Okla., he was a Baptist, member ofVeterans of
Foreigh Wars Post 4564, U.S. Marines veteran of WWII.  He was predeceased by his
first wife; his parents, Chester & Parilee SparksMillsaps; Gracie Millsaps; two
sons, Jim Millsaps Jr. & Douglas Millsaps& a sister, Vilma Preston.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Millsaps of Hot Springs; a son and
daughter-in-law, John & Betty Millsaps of Lawrenceville, GA., two daughters and
sons-in-law, Brenda & Tom Wick of Markham, Ill., and Linda & Darrell Sabatini of
Chicago; three brothers, Chester Millsaps of Belen, N.M., Warren Millsaps of

Vaughan Mullins Jr., 35, of Hot Springs died Fri., Dec. 31, 1999, at a local
hospital.
Born Jan. 21, 1964, at Stuttgart, he was a member of Piney Grove United
Methodist Church.  He was predeceased by his father, Syd Vaughan Mullins and
grandfather, W. K. “Moon” Mullins.
Survivors include his wife, Sherri Mullins of Pearcy; two sons, Brennan & Blayne
Mullins, both of Pearcy; his mother, Eva Mullins of HotSprings; two sisters, Lea
Moore of Hot Springs & Diane Jone of Grenada, Miss; his maternal grandmother,
Agnes Gurley of Marion; and his  paternal grandmother, Kathleen Mullins of

RUSSELL PENCE
BISMARCK-- Russell “Whitey” Pence, 82, of Bismarck died 7:30 p.m. Dec. 30, 1999,
at St. Joseph’s Regional Health Center. He was born to William Henry & Leonia
Russell Pence on Aug. 30, 1917, at Boydsville, Ark.  He was retired from J.L.
Scott Builders and Rod Coston Lumber Company where he had been warehouse
manager.  He was  a WWII Veteran of the U.S. Army and was associated with the
Jehovah’s Witnesses at Caddo Valley Kingdom Hall.  He & Lucille Seward were
married April 3, 1944, atLong Beach, Calif.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille Seward Pence of Bismarck; two sons, Russell
W. Pence of Antioch, Ark., and Brian Pence of Dallas, Texas; three daughters,
Dianna Dyer of New DeRoche, Ark., Belinda Pace of Antioch & Karen Phillips of
Hot Springs, Ark.; a sister, Cletis Johnsof West Alton, Mo.; 17 grandchildren;
14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Mon. Jan. 3, 2000, in the chapel of Atkinson
Funeral Home, by Joel Wall.  Burial will follow in Prairie Bayou Cemetery by
Atkinson Funeral Home.

OLA -- Elsie E. Potts, 74, of Ola died Fri., Dec. 31, 1999, at a Danville
hospital.
Born April 25, 1925, at Hollis to Virgil & Lena Wells Douthit, shewas a
homemaker and member of Ola Assembly of God Church.  She was predeceased by her
husband, Limmie Potts, a son, Charles Potts and a brother, Eugene Douthit.
Survivors include three daughters, Glenda Terry of Hot Springs, Wanda Young of
Forest Hill, La., & Marilyn Reeves of Fort Smith; eight grandchildren, Bert
Young, Tiffany Young, Alica Terry, Allison Terry, April Turnbos, Katlyn Turnbow,

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE -- Barbara Page Wooledge, 83, of Hot Springs Village, Ark.,
died Wed., Dec. 29, 1999, at a local hospital.
She was born May 21, 1916, at Chicago, Ill., and was a member of  United
Methodist Church.  Mrs. Wooledge was a member of the Houston, Texas, and Hot
Springs Village Women’s Clubs, the Hot Springs Village Social and Cultural
Committee and a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority atNorthwestern University.
For many years, Mrs. Wooledge & her husband, Phil, have championedmany social
causes but none was as dear to her heart as that of mental illness.  She was a
charter member of Birchtree Communities Board of Directors.
She was predeceased by her father, Warren James Potter & her mother, the former
Marion Louis Smith, as well as her first husband of 41 years, Beverly Wilkes
Page.  She is survived by her husband of more than 16 years, Phillip R.
Wooledge; a son, James S. Page & his wife Carole of Houston; a son, John W. Page
of Malvern; a daughter, Patricia Page Kay of the Woodlands, Texas, a daughter,
Pamela Page Fjeld-Hansen &her husband Jan of Hot Springs Village; a sister,
Polly Ann Potter Lea of Reading, Calif.; a sister, Marjorie Lea Dudley & her
husband James of Phoenix, Ariz., a sister, Nancy Ritchie & her husband Gordon of
Morrison, Ill.; five grandchildren, Pamela Page Osborne, Dr. Jill Page Coleman,
Jennifer Michelle Kay, Lene Fjeld-Hanse; and six great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Mon., Jan. 3, 2000, at Village United Methodist
Church with the Rev. George Tanner & the Rev. Thomas Jarrell officiating.  A
private family interment will follow at Presbyterian Kirk in the Pine Memorial
Garden.

ELLIOT LEE RICHARDSON
BOSTON -- He served as secretary of defense under Richard Nixon, was the
ambassador to Great Britain and ran for the U.S. Senate in Massachusetts in
1984.
But Elliot Lee Richardson was best known as a man of character who, during the
height of the Watergate investigation, refused Nixon’s orders to fire the
special prosecutor in the case, Archibald Cox.  Richardson died Friday of a
cerebral hemorrhage at Massachusetts GeneralHospital.  He was 79.  President
Clinton remembered Richardson as “a manof uncommon intergrity.”
“(He) put the nation’s interests first even when the personal costwas very high.
He was an unparalleled public servant---a lawyer, a diplomat, a soldier, and a
prosecutor,” Clinton said.

Iva Augustine Burgess Cunningham, 89, of Hot Springs died Saturday, Jan. 1,
2000, in Crossville, Tenn.
Born Aug. 1, 1910, in Whittington to Nathaniel Webster and Namie Canzady James
Burgess, she was a graduate of Lakeside High School, former teacher at Fountain
Lake School, homemaker and member of Southside church of Christ.  She was
predeceased by her husband, WilliamKelly Cunningham Jr.; a brother, Leonard
Burgess; and a sister, Muriel Burgess Richardson.
Survivors include her children, Carolyn and Miles Clark of Crossville, Tenn.,
Kelly and Georgia Cunningham of Arlington, Texas, Robert and Barbara Cunningham
of San Antonio, Texas, and Thomas and LoSharris Cunningham of Temple, Texas; a
sister, Zena Burgess Nicholas of Hot Springs; nine grandchildren; three great-
grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hot Springs Funeral Home chapel.

ARKADELPHIA -- David Allen Higgins, 35, of Arkadelphia died Friday, Dec. 31,
1999, in an Arkadelphia hospital.
Born Oct. 29, 1963, in Mountain Home, Idaho, to Donald Lynn and Patricia Lynn
Cochran Higgins, he was a counselor and ordained minister with the South Delta
Church of WICCA.
Survivors include his wife, Christine Barton Higgins; four sons, Todd Barton of
Tenn., and Duncan Barton, James Barton and David Stotts, all of Arkansas; two
daughters, Sydney Jones of Texas and Nan Roden of Tenn.; a sister, Lynnette
Shaffer of Oregon; and his parents.
Private family services will be held.

GRETA S. JONES
GLENWOOD -- Greta Sue Jones, 65, of Glenwood died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000.
She was born on March 9, 1934, in the Mount Tabor community near Glenwood, the
daughter of H. W. “Wibb” Wright and Mattie Bright Wright. On Aug. 8, 1953, she
was married to Inell L. Jones, who preceded her death on Dec. 23, 1999.
She owned and operated Greta;s Beauty Shop in Glenwood for many years.  She
graduated from Caddo Gap High School and Arkadelphia Beauty College in Hot
Springs.  She was a devoted housewife and helped on the family farm at Langley. 
The family was selected as Pike County Farm Family of the Year during her life
time.  Greta was a loving mother and grandmother to her two grandchildren.  She
was well known in the community and a friend to everyone who knew her.
She is survived by three children, Randy Jones in Glenwood, ReggieJones andn his
wife, Lisa, of Glenwood and Trina Jones of Hot Springs; two grandchildren,
Courtney Jones of Conway and Josh Jones of Glenwood; and her brother and sister-
in-law, Verbie and Marie Wright of Bonnerdale.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, in the Davis-Smith
Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. J.B. Evans officiating.
Interment will be in the Mount Tabor Cemetery under the direction of Davis-Smith
Funeral Home of Glenwood.
The family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Mon. from 5 to 7 p.m.

Born, Sept. 5, 1927, in Chicago, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and
the Korean War and member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church.  He was
predeceased by his parents, Will and MargueriteLillis Leslie.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly Leslie of Hot Springs Village;a daughter and
son-in-law, Marianne and Thomas Lamont of Laredo, Texas; a sister and brother-
in-law, Katherine and John Barron of Chicago; and two grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 9 a.m. Tues. at Sacred Heart of
Jesus Catholic Church with Father Raymond Rossi as celebrant.

Springs hospital.
Born Sept. 17, 1906, in Montgomery County to Luther Tucker and Lurett
Pendergrass, she was predeceased by her husband, Dave Manley; a daughter, Essie
Anderson; a son, Ellis Qualls; a brother, Everette Tucker; a sister, Lola Moudy;
and a grandchild, Bryan Hurst.

Alexander, she was predeceased by two brothers, Glenn Alexander and Dick

Shreveport, La., and Terry and Pam Thomas of Windsor, Colo.; adaughter and son-
in-law, Cherri and Dallas Weston of Alamo; a brother, Jack Alexander of Black

She was predeceased by her husband, Jerrel Monroe Treadwell; four sisters; and
five brothers.

Hendricks of Hot Springs; a sister, Enda Dacus of Little Rock; two brothers,
Bill Holland of Russellville and Roy Holland of Idago; sixgrandchildren; and
three great-grandchildren.

PEARCY-- Johnie M. Whitfield, 94, of Pearcy died Sun., Jan. 2, 2000, in a Hot
Springs nursing home.
Born Oct. 16, 1905, in Bismarck, he was a retired farmer and member of Memorial
Baptist Church.  He was predeceased by his wife, LenaWhitfield; and a son,
Kenneth Whitfield.
Survivors include two grandchildren, Helen Bates and Johnny Whitfield, both of
Pearcy; a great-granddaughter, Michelle Bates of Pearcy; a brother, Earl
Whitfield of Hot Springs; and a daughter-in-law,Virginia Whitfield of Pearcy.

ELMO R. ZUMWALT JR.
DURHAM, N.C.  -- Retired Adm. Elmo R. Zumwalt Jr., known early inhis career for
modernizing the navy and later for ordering the sprayingof Agent Orange in
Vietnam, died Sunday.  He was 79.
Zumwalt was born in Tulare, Calif.
Zumwalt lived in McLean, Va., just outside Washington, D.C. Survivors include
his wife, a son, two daughters, six grandchildren, a sister and a brother.

Viola Burneson, 101, of Hot Springs died Tues., Feb. 29, 2000, in a local
hospital.
Born June 30, 1898, in Mount Ida, she was a member of Grand Ave. United
Methodist Church and AARP.  She was predeceased by two husbands, John Freeman
and John Burneson, and her parents, William and Luara Simpson Alley.
Survivors include one brother-in-law, T. H. Smith of Hot Springs; one sister-in-
law, Dorry Alley of Everett, Wash.; one step-son; step-grandchildren; nieces;
and nephews.
Services will be  2 p.m. Fir. at Gross Funeral Home chapel.

Burial will be in Whittington Cemetery, Mount Ida. 


GERTRIDE E. EVANS
Gertrude E. Evans, 88, of Hot Springs died Thurs., Feb. 24, 2000, in a local
hospital.
She was born Nov. 15, 1911, in Cherryvale, Kan.
Survivors include one daughter, Phyllis Bolvin of Merrillville, Ind.; one son,
Donald Morrow of Renton, Wash.; five grandchildren; and three step-
grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held in Kansas.

ARKADELPHIA -- Warren Preston Harrison, 57, of Arkadelphia died Sun., Feb. 27,
2000, in a Conway hospital.
Born Sept. 23, 1942, in Reeves, Mo., to William Henry and Martha Clementine
Martin Harrison, he was a construction worker and member of Jehovah Witnesses.
He was predeceased by one brother, Billy Joe Harrison.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Harrison; one son, Farren Harrison of Gurdon;
four daughters, Mary Christina Simmons of Okla., Cynthia Doreen Aaron of
Jacksonville, Fla., Rebecca Lynn Harrison of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Martha
Marie Shaw of Danville, Pa.; one brother,Farren Dale Harrison of Mountain View;
five sisters, Francis Lorren of Southhaven, Mich., Carolyn Stafford of
Donaldson, Shelia Boyd of Mountain View, Gail Detrick of Adamsville, Tenn., and
Denise Bray of Hornersville, Mo.; and eight grandsons.
Memorials services will be 11 a.m. Fri. at Kingdom Hall in Caddo Valley.

WALLACE HOLMAN WITH PICTURE
Wallace Holman, 89, of Hot Springs died Mon., Feb. 28, 2000, in a local
hospital.  Born in Silex, Ark. , on Oct. 24, 1910, to James DanielHolman and
Floy Atlet Holman, he attended high school in Dover, Ark.
He resided in Calif. from the time he was 26, picked oranges for  a living at
first and eventually began work at South California Edison Co., where he worked
for 30 yrs. until he retired in 1972 and moved to Hot Springs.
He served in WW II on the Hans Hegg with the U.S. Navy, was a member of the
American Legion and served 19 yrs. as Chaplain at the VFW Post 2278 of  Hot
Springs.  Wallace was an active member of Richard St. Church of Christ.
He was predeceased by his wives, Mary Lucile Holman in 1967 and Mary Ruth Holman
in 1995; also by his daughters, Linda Wisdom and TeresaRene’ Teague, both of Hot
Springs.
Wally is survived by his daughters, Mary Gwendolyn Ragsdill of HotSprings, Peggy
Hammond of La., Gwen McCommon of Calif. and his sons,, Dewey McCommon of Mo.,
and Lanny McCommon of Calif.; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Sat. at Gross Funeral Home Chapelwith Mr. Jack
Smith officiating.  Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Park with Military
Honors by the Honor Guard, Thaddeus H. Caraway Post 2278, VFW.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Fri.

REDFIELD -- Robert Woodell Johnson, 64, of Redfield died Mon., Feb. 28, 2000, in
a Little Rock hospital.

Born Sept. 11, 1935, in Donaldson to Robert Woodrow and Altha Mae Willis
Johnson, he was a Baptist, retired Ralph Coppess Motors service manager, member
of Ark. League of Artists and president of Johnson Hunting Club.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Sue Sanders Johnson; three sons and two
daughters-in-law, Woody and Beverly Johnson of Broken Arrow, Okla., Clark and
Sandi Johnson of Bauxite and Edward Johnson of Redfield; seven daughters and
four son-in-law, Linda and Dick Jeffey of Maumelle, Sharon and Ken Miner of
Fayetteville and Rhonda Johnson, Lauraand Eddie Winbury, Melissa Lowery Johnson,
Jennifer Lowery Johnson and Rachel Lowery Johnson, all of Redfield; one brother,
Ronald Johnson of Sheridan; one sister, Mary Romine of Sheridan; 12
grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thurs. at Orion Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev.
Rick Etherirdge officiating.

Burial will be in Orion Cemetery, near Redfield.

DALARK -- Danny Lemons, 52, of Dalark died Tues, Feb. 29, 2000, ina hot Springs
hospital.

Born July 31, 1947, in Arkadelphia to Earl and Elene Langley Lemons, he was a
mechanic and member of Manchester United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Rogers Lemons; one son, Wesley Lemons of
Dalark; three daughters, Kay Dukes, Pam Combs and Amanda Lemons, all of Dalark;
his mother, Elene Lemons of Dalark; and two grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thurs. at Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Home Chapel,
Arkadelphia, with the Rev. Kevin Guerin officiating.

RANDY C. REED (WITH PICTURE)

ROYAL -- Randy C. Reed, 59, of Royal, died Tues, Feb. 29, 2000, inHot Springs.
Born April 3, 1941, in Greenfield, Ohio, he trained thoroughbred race horses for
many yrs.  Of late, he was a prominent salesman for Home Improvements.

He was a member of Tower of Strength Church and the HBPA.

He is survived by his wife of 22 yrs., Diana of Royal; two daughters, and one
son, Candi of Ohio, Jennifer of W. Va. and Jimmy of Ky.; his mother, Rose, two
sisters, Ann and Judy, all of Fla.; and two brothers Ryan of Fla. and John of
Ky.; his most loyal and loving longtime friend, Larry Snyder; and many more
friends who loved him.

Our highlight of life was getting to work with a horse named DoubeReady.  He
gave Randy his biggest thrill in his racing career.

Services will be 7:30 p.m. Fri. at Gross Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim
Frazier officiating.
