This cemetery was established by Washington B Smith as a family burying ground
soon after he migrated to this community from Montgomery Co, Ala, in 1836.

He was one of the first settlers in this area and had extensive land holdings
here. On June 3, 1839, he was ordained a Baptist minister at Shady Grove Baptist
Church in Union Co and was undoubtedly the first minister to reside in what is
now Cleveland Co. His two story log residence stood about 1/4 mile west of here
and was used as a hospital during the Civil War.
