Gustavus H. Alexander, storekeeper and gauger at Siloam Springs, Ark., 
was born in Cumberland County, Ky., January 20, 1856, son of Joseph H. 
and America (Baker) Alexander. The father was born in the same county, 
and was a tiller of the soil. He received his final summons in 1865, 
in his native county, where he had passed his entire life. The mother 
was born in the same county, is still living there, and is fifty-four 
years of age. Their son, Gustavus H. Alexander, was educated at 
Alexander College, Burksville, Ky., also Columbia College, Adair 
County, Ky.; remained in his native county until sixteen years of age. 
when he moved to Fort Smith. Ark., where he worked on a farm and 
traded a great deal. He was in the United States police service for 
one year, and then deputy constable in Upper Township, Fort Smith. 
After moving to this county he was made marshal of Siloam Springs in 
1884, and was afterward appointed storekeeper and gauger. He owns some 
property in Siloam Springs. He chose for his companion in life, 
October 16, 1884, Miss Susan M. Barton, who died September 8, 1885. 
She was of religious faith, but a member of no church. Mr. Alexander 
is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, is a member of the I. 
O. O. F., K. of H., and in his political views has been a Democrat all 
his life.
