ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT (Little Rock), Thursday, Mar 13, 1884, P. 1 March 13, 1884
“A Loaded Gun and Mule Team Remove Two Citizens. STUTTGART, ARKANSAS COUNTY.
Editor Arkansas Democrat: A sad accident occurred near Mud Island, this
county, a few days since. Mary, wife of Wm. A. Smithon, while handing a gun
to her husband to shoot some deer that were feeding near by, accidentally
shot herself between the eyes, causing instant death. She leaves a husband
and six small children -- the youngest only seven months old. They came to
this county from Saginaw county, Michigan, and entered a homestead. Another
fatal accident occurred in this county, near Goldman, on the 1st inst.
Edward Hunnicutt, step son of John Green, while driving a four mule team
hauling wood. The team became entangled in a slash, threw him off and
trampled him to death. When found one of the mules was down on him. The
young man was 17 years of age and highly respected. Our county, and
especially this community, is in a thriving condition. New settlers
constantly coming in and helping to improve the county."
