BREWER BELL
	Brewer Bell, 77, of the Blackfork community near Mena, died 
Tuesday, December 28, 1999 in a Mena hospital. He was a 30 year veteran 
of the Navy, serving during World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was a 
rancher in the Blackfork community.
	His body will be cremated and will be interred in the National 
Cemetery in Ft. Smith, Arkansas under the direction of Martin Funeral 
Home of Waldron.
	He is survived by his wife, Alberta; one son, Bruce Bell of 
Demotte, Indiana; two sisters, Sarah Francis Ham of Fayetteville, 
Georgia and Charlotte Collins of Alabama; one brother, Harold Bell 
of Newnan, Georgia; and two grandchildren, Tiffany and Jessica Bell.

	Wanda Yancey Evans, 69, of Spring, Texas died Thursday, December 
30 in a Houston hospital. She was a retired accounting secretary.

	She is survived by one son Larry B. Scott of Houston, TX; two 
sisters, Nadine Nicholas of Houston, TX and Lavern Owens of Copperas

ARDELL MARTIN
	Ardell Joseph Martin, 85, of Mansfield, Arkansas, died Tuesday, 
December 28, 1999 in a local hospital. He has been a member of the 
Mansfield First Baptist Church since the 1940's. He was a consignee 
for Mobil Oil Company for fifteen years. After that he was branch 
manager for Production Credit Association for eighteen years.
	Throughout all his working years he was a cattleman and horse 
trader. He was a member of the Mansfield Masonic Lodge and was a 32nd 
Degree Mason. He was a charter member of the Mansfield Lion's Club. 
He served on the Farmer's Home Administration Board, the Arkansas 
Baptist Family and Child Care Services Board and most recently the 
Area Agency on Aging Board.
	Funeral services were at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 30 at 
Mansfield First Baptist with burial at Coop Prairie Cemetery.
	He is survived by his wife, Jewell; one daughter, Treva Mathis 
of Mansfield; one son, Dallas of Arkadelphia; one brother, C.T. of 
Houston, Texas; four grandchildren, Stanley Mathis of Mansfield, 
Cynthia Mathis of Fayetteville, Rod Martin of Little Rock and Paul 
Martin of Stanford University; and two great-grandchildren, Sarah 
and Joseph Mathis of Mansfield.
	Pallbearers were Dennis Tyler, Phillip King, Autury Basham, 
Eddie Joe Wooten, Dr. Charles Sears, Bill Stanfill, Robert Joyce 
and honorary pallbearers were members of his Sunday school class.

	Betty June Gregory, 64, of Waldron, Arkansas passed away 
Wednesday, December 29, 1999 at her home. She was born June 5, 1935 
in Prue, Oklahoma to the late Oscar William Cramer and Ida Morrison 
Cramer.
	She was a cook for a nursing home facility. Ms. Gregory was 
of the Baptist faith and a loving mother and grandmother.
	She is survived by her husband, Walter Gregory of Waldron, AR; 
one son, Walter Eddie Gregory III of Waldron, AR; five daughters, 
June Hunt of Perry, OK, Kay Bozarth of Gage, OK, Dorene Smallwood 
of Heavener, OK, Janice Benson of Heavener, OK and Sherrie Matthews 
of Clarksville, AR; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
	Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 2, 
2000 in the Ouachita Missionary Baptist Church in Waldron with 
Reverend George Crump officiating. Burial followed in the Square 
Rock Cemetery in Waldron under the direction of the Beasley-Wood 
Funeral Home.
	Pallbearers were Mike Matthews, Jessie Lee Benson, Earnie

	She was preceded in death by her husband M.L. Atchley; three 
sons, Thurston, Harley and Maurice; two grandchildren, Paul Keener 
and Sharon Rowe and her parents, brothers and sisters.

THOMAS J. GRAY, JR.
	Thomas J. Gray, Jr., 71, of Mountain Home, Arkansas, died Monday, 
January 10, 2000 at Baxter Regional Medical Center. He was born November 
20, 1928 in Waldron, Arkansas to Beulah Gray and Thomas J. Gray, Sr.
	He was retired from the U.S. Army after serving for 32 years. He 
served during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was preceded in death by 
his parents, his second wife and one sister.
	He was a member of VFW Post #3246 of Mountain Home, Alley White 
American Legion Post #32 of Mountain Home, Disabled American Veterans, 
Fraternal Order of Eagles, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #1953 of 
Mountain Home, he was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Special 
Forces Association of Little Rock, Arkansas. He also was a member of 
the Methodist faith.
	Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 14 at 
Roller Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at Baxter Memorial 
Gardens. Graveside Military services will be provided with the VFW 
Post #2278 of Hot Springs, Arkansas as Honor Guard.
	He is survived by two sons, Thomas J. Gray III and his wife, 
Karen of Goose Creek, South Carolina and Terrance L. Gray and his wife, 
Judy of Sanford, North Carolina; one daughter, Margaret G. Edwards and 
her husband, Frank of Wilson, North Carolina; 10 grandchildren; two 
great-grandchildren; one brother, Buddy Gray and his wife, Bonnie of 
Waldron, Arkansas; three sisters, Edna Harrison, Cordelia Matthews 
and Jean Starnes, all of Waldron, Arkansas; two stepsons, Lawrence

MONDELL WALTER OWENS
	Mondell Walter Owens, 79, died January 11, 2000 in his home in 
Waldron, Arkansas. He was born December 3, 1920, the son of Lillie 
Smith Owens and George A. Owens. He was a life-long resident of Scott 
County, having lived most of his life in the Parks community.
	He served as a 1st Class Petty Officer in the United States 
Navy on a minesweeper in the invasions of the South Pacific Islands 
during World War II. He served as President of the Scott County Farm 
Bureau, chairperson of the Scott County Hospital Board, Justice of 
the Peace for Keener Township, and he was a board member of the Poteau 
River Conservation District.
	He also was Sunday School Superintendent, chairperson of the 
Board of Trustees and teacher in the Parks United Methodist Church. 
Mondell's family was the Scott County Farm Family of the year during 
the 1950's. He was a retired cattle rancher and retired from the 
United States Soil Conservation Service.
	Survivors include his wife Melba of the home; two daughters, 
Patricia Owens Richmond of Waldron and Louise Owens Finney of Fort 
Smith; four grandchildren, Reshia Hudson of Parks, Stephanie McConnell 
of Fayetteville, Clayton Owens Finney of Houston, TX and Lee Anna 
Finney of Fayetteville; three great-grandchildre, Victoria and Gaines 
Hudson of Parks and Sydney McConnell of Fayetteville; one brother, 
Buel A. Owens of Copperas Cove, TX; four sisters, Berniece Herrin of 
Victoria, TX, Treva Leeper of Fort Smith, Clarodean Willmes of 
Coulterville, CA and Maxine Garvin of Wagoner, OK; and 14 nieces and 
nephews.
	Funeral services were held Saturday, January 15, at 2:00 p.m. 
in the Parks Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Thompson-Jameson 
Cemetery in Parks.

	Mr. Willie Clinton "Bo" Brothers, age 57, of Haskell-Benton
Died Saturday, January 15, 2000. He was born on September 22, 1942
in Gravelly, AR in Yell County. Mr. Brothers was employed at Arkansas
Face and Veneer Co. in Benton for 38 years and was a member of the
Church of Christ.
	He is survived by two sons, Steve Brothers of Tull-Benton and
Robert Wade Brothers of North Little Rock; one daughter, Regina Michelle
Whiterford of Dekalb Junction, New York; three brothers and sisters-
in-law, Vernon and Mary Brothers of Benton, AR; Buddy and Sue Brothers
of Oklahoma and Charles and Judy Brothers of Waldron, AR; three sisters
and brothers-in-law, Tressie and John Reed of Little Rock, AR, Betty
and Royal Smith of Story, AR and Shirley Jameson of Fort Smith, AR;
and four grandchildren.
	Services were held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21 at the Ashby
Funeral Home Chapel in Benton with a 1:00 p.m. Saturday graveside
service at Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Waldron, AR. Ministers were Hascel
Coop, Tim Davis.

also the 6th Armored Division Association. She was a homemaker and a
machine operator for Dixie Cup. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Ralph E. Smith and her grandson, Jason Smith.
	Funeral service was at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 25 at First
Christian Church with burial at the U.S. National Cemetery in Fort

IVAN EARL TAFF
	Born August 10, 1927 in Waldron, Arkansas, Ivan Earl Taff died
Tuesday, December 14, 1999 of a heart attack in Fallbrook, California,
where he lived for 40 years.
	Ivan served as a gunner aboard the U.S.S. Wilkes Barre during
World War II. Following the war, Ivan married Joyce Collier of
Oklahoma and reared four children: Kathy, Kenneth, Brenda and David.
	He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers
since 1948 and a longtime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post
1924 and the Fallbrook Moose Lodge.
	He was preceded in death by his son, David Earl Taff and his
Grandson, Richard Dennis White. Ivan is survived by Joyce; his brother
Dale Taff and his sister, Mona Jean Suter; his children, Kathy Lee
Clark, Kenneth Darrel Taff and Brenda Joyce Henry; his grandchildren
Janet Kathleen Henry, Ivan Nathaniel Taff, Autumn Taff, Velvet Rose
Taff, Dakota Blue Taff; and his great grandchildren Makayla Taff and
Anthony Kessler.
	Also survived by aunts, Nadine Center and Atha Taff; cousins,
Paula Sparks, JoAnn Bush, Kenneth Lee Taff and Luella Blalock.

ALAN (BUCK) HOWARD
	Alan (Buck) Howard, 55, of Tyler, Texas died January 22, 2000 
in Tyler. He was born June 12, 1944 in Longview, TX. He was a Navy 
veteran and an automobile salesman for Classic Toyota in Tyler. He 
lived in the Tyler area for 12 years and was a former resident of 
Newton and Houston. He was a member of the T.R. Bonner Masonic Lodge 
in Mt. Sylvan. He was preceded in death by his father, Leland Howard, 
his mother, Aileen Howard and a brother, Dale Strickland.
	Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 30 
at Tyler Memorial Chapel with Rev. Douglas Turner officiating. Burial 
was at Tyler Memorial Park. Arrangements were under the direction of 
Tyler Memorial Funeral Home.
	He is survived by his wife, Erika Smith Howard of Tyler; two 
daughters, Anna Miller and Kitty Howard, both of Denver, CO; his 
father, Clarence Strickland of Waldron, AR; one brother, Van Howard

KATHERINE GESSLING
	Katherine Gessling, age 85, of Waldron passed away Friday, 
January 28, 2000 in Waldron. She was born April 24, 1914 in Sheffield, 
Alabama to the late Thomas C. Garrett and the late Mary Lee Wyman 
Garrett.
	She resided in the Pinewood Nursing Home in Waldron for the 
past seven years. She was preceded in death by her husband Irvin 
Gessling in 1984. The two of them met and were married in June of 
1936. Katherine graduated from Mt. Vernon Hospital School of Nursing 
and worked as a practical nurse in that hospital.
	She is survived by two sons, Thomas Gessling of Dalton, Ohio 
and Richard Gessling of Williamsport, Pennsylvania; and a number of 
grandchildren and great grandchildren.
	Funeral services were Wednesday, February 2, 2000 at 2 p.m. 
in the Beasley-Wood Chapel with Reverend David Crooks officiating. 
Burial followed in the Pinecrest Memorial Park under the direction 
of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home.

February 8, 2000. Mr. Laurie was born June 12, 1957 in Dallas,

Laurie. He was a 1975 Danville High School graduate, attended 
Ouachita Baptist University and was a 16 year employee for Yell 
County working in various capacities.
	He was a devoted husband, father and son, and an avid sports 
fan and a member of the Danville Church of Christ. He was preceded 
in death by his grandparents, Beecher and Cordia Castleberry and 
an uncle, Robert B. Castleberry.
	He is survived by his wife, Stacey Stamps Laurie; one daughter, 
Madison Alexis Laurie of Danville; his mother, Elouise Castleberry 
Laurie of Danville; one uncle, Bill W. Castleberry of Danville; his 
father-in-law and mother-in-law, Nora D. and Janell Lambert Stamps

February 20, 2000. He was born on March 30, 1917 in Blue Ball, AR

of Los Angeles, Cypress and Corona, CA.
	Funeral services were at 1:00 p.m. February 23 at Buell Chapel

	He was married to Etta J. Webb on May 26, 1956 in Las Vegas, 
NV. He was a U.S. Army Cavalry member mounted on horseback in 1938. 
He was a carpenter and in general construction. He was a life member

and spending time with family and friends.

	Clarence Wilton "C.W." Sykes, 76, of Yuba City, CA died Saturday, 
February 12, 2000 at his home after a long and courageous battle with 
cancer. Clarence was born in Ione, AR to Andrew Jackson and Mary Sykes. 
One of three children, he was preceded in death by his parents and a 
brother, Robert Sykes.
	His surviving sister, Clara Dark, lives in Santa Paula, CA. 
Son in law to Jim and Mattie Lunsford, Clarence married Lois Lunsford 
of Dutch Creek, AR in 1940. They have two sons, Bill R. Sykes of Yuba 
City, CA and Clarence D. Sykes of Lakeview, OR.
	Other surviving relatives include his wife, Lois, of Yuba City, 
CA; two sons, six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, as well 
as several nieces and nephews.
	Graveside services were at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 16 at 
the Sutter Cemetery in Sutter, CA. The Reverend Chuck Stifle officiated.
Arrangements were under the direction of Chapel of the Twin Cities in 
Yuba City, CA.

	JoAnn Aline Harvey, 56, of Hartford, Arkansas died Monday, 
February 28, 2000 in her home. She was a homemaker and a member 
of the Packsaddle Church.

	Rita Lois McCafferty, 54, of Harvey, Arkansas died Monday, 
February 21, 2000 in a Fort Smith hospital. She was a teacher's 
aid for Fourche Valley School for 24 years and attended Harvey 
Assembly of God Church.
	Funeral services were at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 24 
at Harvey Assembly of God Church with burial at Monroe Cemetery 
at Harvey, Arkansas under the direction of Martin Funeral Home of

	She is survived by her husband, Kelly Jack McCafferty of the 
home, two daughters, Beth McCafferty of Tyler, Texas and Lisa Miller 
of Cedar Creek, AR; one son-in-law, Shawn Miller of Cedar Creek, AR; 
her mother-in-law, Lucille McCafferty of Waldron; four sisters,

	Pat Yandell, 93, of Booneville, Arkansas died February 25, 
2000 in a Ft. Smith hospital. He was a father, husband, and a 
Deacon at the Victory Baptist Church in Booneville. He ran the 
San Shop at the Tuberculosis Sanitorium for many years. He was 
preceded in death by his wife, Easter Yandell.
	Funeral services were at 10:00 a.m. Monday, Feb. 28 at 
Victory Baptist Church in Booneville with burial at Oak Hill 
Cemetery in Booneville under the direction of Roberts Funeral 
Home of Booneville.
	He is survived by his wife, Margie Yandell of the home; 
three daughters, Patricia Presson of Ft. Smith, AR, Betty Woods 
of Greenwood, AR and Sabra Jenkins of Sherwood, AR; one step-daughter,

	Ezra Burroughs, 85, of Hot Springs, Arkansas died Thursday, 
March 2, 2000 in a local hospital. He was born February 16, 1915 
in Bismarck, AR. He was a member of Bismarck United Methodist Church. 
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Marie Burroughs and a son, 
Arnold E. Burroughs.
	He is survived by two daughters, Carrie Lou Sparks of Waldron, 
AR and Francis Sue Duffey of Katy, TX; three brothers, William 
Burroughs of Shreveport, LA, Maurice Burroughs of North Little 
Rock, AR, and Calvin Burroughs of Hot Springs, AR and seven 
grandchildren, Carol Hanna, Susan Henry, Scott Connelly, Deborah 
Stowe, Michael Duffey, Melissa Duffey and Gregory Duffey; and 11 
great-grandchildren.
	Funeral services were on Sunday, March 5 at 2:00 p.m. at

WILLIE G. LEE
	Willie G. Lee, 81, of Parsons, Kansas died Thursday, March 2 
at her home. She was born April 12, 1918 at Hackett, Arkansas to 
William Trotter and Zelda (McGlaughlin) Trotter. She grew up and 
attended schools in the Hackett area. She completed nurses training 
at Colonial Hospital in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. In 1958, she moved to 
Parsons. She first worked at Mercy Hospital and then later at the 
Labette County Medical Center.
	She was a member of the New Voice Club. She enjoyed gardening 
and baseball. She and Thurman Lee were married on June 21, 1941 in 
Mena, Arkansas. He preceded her in death on April 23, 1991.
	She is survived by one daughter, Carol Carland of Parsons, KS; 
one step-son, Darrell Holsted of Moore, OK; three granddaughters, 
Michelle Almond of Parsons, Susan Correll of Mound Valley and Bridget 
Price of Parsons; three step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; 
eight step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Plymouth Trotter of 
Hackett, AR and Dude Trotter of Sacramento, CA; one sister, Sybil 
Sale of Carson, CA; several nieces and nephews.
	She was preceded in death by two brothers, three sisters and 
two sons. Funeral services were at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, March 4 at 
the Carson-Wall Funeral Home with Rev. Jeff Martin officiating. 
Burial was at Oakwood Cemetery.

2000 in Poteau, Oklahoma. He was a life long resident of Heavener and

BESSIE FERGUSON
	The funeral was held Feb. 3 for Bessie L. Ferguson of 
Springfield, who died Jan. 31 of heart failure. She was 69. She 
was born June 1, 1930, in Chickasha, Okla., to Dewey and Glyds 
Ensey Cox. She married Henry Ferguson in Waldron, Ark., on April 23, 
1948.
	She moved with her family to Arkansas, where she lived until 
moving to Oregon in 1952. She moved to Reedley, Calif. in 1957, 
returned to Springfield 29 years ago and settled in the Marcola area.
	Ferguson worked as a cook at the McKenzie Café, Larry & Kathy's 
Café and Barney's Café. She also owned the Airport Café at the 
Springfield Airport for a year.
	She enjoyed sewing, doll-making, fish[ing], church and 
spending time with family. She was a member of the Lighthouse 
Pentecostal Church of God, serving as president of the Pentecostal 
Ladies Auxiliary.
	Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Judy Drue of 
Great Falls, Mont., and Debra Strickland of Portland; two sons, 
Calvin of Marcola and Roger of Springfield, a sister, Louise 
McDonald of Lavaca, Ark., 13 grandchildren; and nine great-
grandchildren.
	Funeral services were at 2:00 p.m. at Springfield Memorial 
Gardens & Funeral Home. Burial was at Springfield Memorial Gardens.

	Mr. Tuller's body was cremated under the direction of Martin

	Lillian Davis, 80, of Mena passed away Wednesday, March 22, 
2000 in Mena. She was born February 17, 1920 in Black Fork, Arkansas 
to the late William Campbell and the late Della Gatlin Campbell. She 
was united in marriage to the late Charlie Davis. Ms. Davis was a 
loving mother and grandmother and she was of the Baptist faith.
	She is survived by two sons, Bennie Davis of Waldron, AR and 
Leonard Davis of Foreman, AR; four daughters, Eloise Stobaugh and 
Erma Lynn both of Mena, AR, Charlene Harris of Earle, AR and Marie 
Hill of Garland, TX; 10 grandchildren, Bonell Crow, Lawanda Jackson, 
Lynnell Cleghorn, Russell Davis, Ricky Davis, John Hill, Brian Hill, 
Billy Harris, Jaree Lynn and Voyt Lynn; 12 great-grandchildren and 3 
great-great grandchildren.
	She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a 
brother, August Campbell, sisters Alcie Barnes, Elgie Davis, Vivian 
Lane, Minnie Brown and Luie Morrison.
	Funeral services were Saturday, March 25, 2000 at 4:00 p.m. in 
the Beasley-Wood Chapel with Brother Bill Bowen and Brother Dillard 
Miller officiating. Burial followed in the Piney Cemetery in Black 
Fork, Arkansas under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home.
