OBITUARY
HENRY AUGUSTUS ALLEN, II
Pulaski County, Little Rock, Arkansas
April 10, 1920 to Nov. 18, 2000

HENRY AUGUSTUS ALLEN, SR., 80, of Little Rock, AR, owner of Allen Granite
Industries, Inc. passed away Saturday, November 18, 2000, after a 4-1/2 year
illness and complications from an automobile accident in May 1996.

He was born April 10, 1920, in Texarkana, Texas. He was raised in Texarkana
and El Dorado, graduating from El Dorado High School in 1938, prior to the
family’s return to Texarkana. He served his country as a Naval Officer during
WWII. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business from the
University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business. After graduating from
there with honors, he attended the MBA Program at Harvard Graduate School of
Business. While attending the University of Pennsylvania, he served as
President of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

In 1947, he moved with his wife and son to New York City, where he worked in
marketing and sales for 10 years. In 1957, he returned to Arkansas,
continuing work as a manufacturer’s rep and acquiring part ownership in Allen
Monument Works, Inc., a business established in 1937 by his uncle Seab Allen,
Sr. During the ensuing 30 years, he and his business partner, cousin, and
close friend, Charles “Seab” Allen, Jr., manufactured and distributed granite
and marble memorials throughout Arkansas and the surrounding states. He was
very proud of the fact that many of the war memorials honoring our nation’s
heroes (in town squares throughout the state and neighboring states), were
designed and/or manufactured by Allen Monument Works (renamed Allen Granite
Industries, Inc. upon his partner’s retirement in 1985). The company most
recently participated in the manufacture of the Viet Nam War Memorial and the
congressional Medal of Honor memorial on the Arkansas State Capitol grounds.
He was a member since 1957 of Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church and a
member of the Country Club of Little Rock for 40 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Morris Uhrig Allen, Sr. and Jewell
Connell Allen, of Texarkana, TX, and a sister, Elizabeth Allen Young of Mt.
Pleasant, Texas.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 55 years, Mary Grace
Longenecker Allen (of Annville, Pennsylvania); two children Henry
Augustus “Gus” Allen, Jr. of Little Rock and Gail Elizabeth Allen of New
York, NY and recently of Little Rock; two grandchildren Jack and Jamie; two
brothers and a sister, Morris Allen, Jr., James Allen and Elda Thomas of
Texarkana; and 10 nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be private. Memorials may be made to the Brain Injury
Association (formerly the National Head Injury Association), www.biausa.org at
105 N. Alfred Street, Alexandria, VA 22314.
