Note: The packet containing this estate record appears to have papers missing.
A bond filed on 15 Oct 1868 had portions cut out with scissors or razor. What
follows is transcribed from a photocopy of the original document in which heirs
of the estate of Geo!
rge Payne sign for receipt of their portions. The case of the "estate of Geo.
Payne" was entered 15 Oct 1868, so presumably George died shortly before that
date. The record indicates that he died without a will. George and Matilda
Payne lived in Rockport. I!
t is presumed that Matilda died before George as she is not mentioned in the
list of heirs. Fanny A Burton, the wife of James Burton, was a daughter of
George and Matilda.

Transcriber's Notes: George, Matilda and their nine children arrived in the US
from Chatham, Kent, England on 1 Aug 1851. At that time the parents were in
their 40s. It is interesting to note that Fanny and Matilda died before their
father did and that thei!
r children received their portions of his estate. Mary Ann, Albert and Amelia
signed for their portions, as did Fanny's husband, James Burton. Since pages
may be missing from the document, the whereabouts of William George, Thomas and
Charles Payne are unkn!
own. The administrator of the estate, Henry W. Payne, was another son of
George. He died in early 1871 while his wife was pregnant with their fourth
child.
