NORTHAMPTON, MASS.

A beautiful city of large territory, situated on the west side of the
Connecticut River, in Hampshire County, of which it is the court town. It is
about ninety miles west of Boston in a direct line. A petition was granted by
the General Court May 18, 1653, to lay out the plantation of Non-o-tuck, and in
the following spring was carried into effect. Incorporated as a town in 1654,
and from it have been formed since the towns of Southampton, Westhampton, and
Easthampton. Incorporated a city June 23, 1883. It is the twenty-fifth city in
Massachusetts in population, and the two hundred and eighteenth in rank in the
United States. The assessed area is 21,634 acres, which includes a long,
mountainous tract lying to the west bank of the Connecticut River, southeast of
Easthampton. In the southern extremity of this tract rises Mount Tom, 1,214
feet. Total assessors' valuation for 1895, $10,675,197. Net funded debt July 1,
1895, $345,000. Tax rate, 1895, $15.00. Population, U. S. census 1890, 14,930.
State census 1895, 16,738.

The scenery of the entire city is picturesque and grand. The society is
refined and intelligent. Its broad streets, beautifully shaded with great elms
aud bordered with smooth lawns, charming gardens, surrounding tasteful and
elegant residences, make Northampton a paradise in which to live.

Smith College, founded in 1867, is located here and is the educational pride
of the city. A public library, with a branch at Florence, the Institution for
Deaf Mutes, the Northampton Lunatic Hospital, its finely equipped electric
railway, its richly appointed Academy of Music, together with its churches,
schools, manufacturing interests, and its solid banking institutions, all aid in
making a bright future for the city.
