This Burying Ground is in the westerly part of the city which was originally the centre of the
town. It is bounded northerly by Market Square, easterly by Elm Street, southerly by Ash Street and westerly partly by South Street and partly by the estate of the late Jonathan
Bacheller.
It is opposite the southerly front of the old Lynn Hotel, and is said to have originally con-
stituted the westerly end of Lynn Common; the land between it and the present Common, now
covered by the Boscobel Hotel and Taylor's Building also having been once a portion of the
Common land.
It was the only one in use by the whole town from its commencement till about 1720, the town
then including besides the territory of the present city, the entire limits of the towns of
Lynnfield, Saugus, Swampscott and Nahant. No other place of burial, public or private, is
known to have been used until the formation of the second and third parishes, Lynnfield and
Saugus, churches having been established in those parishes in 1720 and 1732, respectively.
The burying grounds there were probably set apart at about the time the churches were gather-
ed, the oldes inscription at Lynnfield Centre being dated 1723 and the oldest at Saugus Centre, that of 1741.

There was another burying ground established a few years previous to 1800, at what is now
called south Lynnfield, a short distance southerly from the junction of the Newburyport Turn-
pike and the road to Lynn.
The reason for selecting this spot at the end of the Common for a burying place is not known.
It could not have been on account of its proximity to the church, as is the case in some in-
stances, for the first church edifice was erected some distance away, near the present inter-
section of Shepard and Summer streets. Very likely the spot had been used by the Indians for
the same purpose. A few years ago, the bones of a human skeleton were exhumed on the adjoin-
estate of the late Jonathan Bacheller; they were found quite near the surface of the ground and were supposed to be the remains of an Indian. The nature of the soil itself being light
and sandy, or the situation in regard to the then prospective town, may have had weight in the
minds of the early settlers; or it may have been from accident, as the burying of the first
dead here - and yet all these causes may have had something to do with deciding the matter.
Lynn settled in 1629.
At all events, the spot was well adapted to the purpose and it is a cause of deep regret that
no more ancient stones are found. The town was settled in 1629, but the oldest stone now standing bears the date of June 17, 1698. Probably many have been destroyed and more have
perished through neglect.
All the inscriptions have been copied, amounting to more than eight hundred, and the list is
here presented entire. Some of these include the names of several persons.
There are nine tombs on the side adjoining Elm street - probably all built since 1800; these
were owned by the following persons:

On the side of the entrance from South street, there are four others. They were owned by the
following:
Hezekiah Chase.
Nehemiah Berrty.
Thomas Raddin.
And the town.
No complete record of deaths was kept by any of the town clerks - an occasional death entry
only is found upon the records. No list of interments, if made, is now known to exist, ex-
cepting that of the last sexton, Benjamin H. Jacobs. He kept an account from his commencement
in 1827 till about 1845, or until a return was made to the town clerk of all interments, according to law. From the latter date they have been recorded by the town and city clerks.
The other burying grounds at Lynn, are the Eastern and Union Street grounds, commenced in
1813; the Friends' burying grounds on Broad Street, near Washington Square, opened in 1723,
the land for which was given to the Society that year by Richard Estes; the free burying
ground, adjoining the Friends' opened in 1825; a small one at the Almshouse on Tower Hill;
the Pine Grove cemetery on Boston Street begun July 24, 1850, by a corporation and conveyed
by them to city January 2, 1854; and two Catholic cemeteries, St. Mary's on Lynnfield street,
consecrated November 4, 1858, and St. Joseph's on Boston Street, consecrated October 16, 1879.
All interments are now made in the last three, with the exception, perhaps, in regard to some
aged persons, who by permission are allowed to be laid beside their friends in the old yards
Pine Grove cemetery is under the charge of ten commissioners, elected by the City Council,
two of whom are chosen each year, to serve for five years.

Lynn, who died April 2, 1838, aged 23 years.

years and 8 months.

Throughout his life, Captain Elisha Bennett, son of Samuel Bennett, retained a part of his
father's farm. He was a prominent citizen of Boston and of Rumney Marsh, representing the
latter on the Board of Assessors and hold other offices. December 18, 1727, Ellis Bennett,
of Boston, mariner, representing that Dorothy Bennett, executrix, had died intestate without
fully administering on her husband's estate, was appointed administrator. - Suff. Deeds, L.

The Inventory of "Captain Elisha Bennet, deceased, of Rumney Marsh" was taken by Nathaniel
Oliver, Thomas Pratt and Samuel Tuttle, Decemember 26, 1727. "The farm & houses standing
thereon" were valued at £1200; one half a brick house on Middle Street in Boston, at £300
There were also inventoried an Indian man and boy £90, "an old calash & cart," two horses,
14 cattle, 12 small pictures, a "silk quilt," brass andirons, "cloth chairs," books valued
at £2 10s; 169 pewter at 20d - £14, £63, etc" Three children inherited the estate, John
Bennet, born, according to the Boston Records, April 4, 1690; Ellis b. Aug 9, 1699, and Sarah,
who m. (1) Nathaniel Viall, July 12, 1708 and (2) John Floyd of Chelsea, Nov. 23, 1732. In
1739 the daughter, with her husband, John Floyd, conveyed her rights in her father's estate,
that is one-third of all the real estate of which he died seized, to "our son, Samuell Viall"
of Chelsea, tanner. In 1745, the farm was described as still held by the heirs of Elisha
Bennett, undivided. It contained about 200 acres, having been reduced, as has been already
shown, since 1674 by sundry conveyances from Samuel Bennett and his heirs. John Bennet,
bachelor, of Walthamstow, County of Essex, England, by Will dated January 12, 1750/51, and
probated in England, August 28, 1751, appointed as his heir his nephew, John Bennet,"who
went ouf Third Mate of the ship Benjamin, Capt. Meard, to the East Indies." He left a legacy
of £1000 to his neice, Sarah Bennett, daughter of his brother, Captain Ellis Bennett, deceased
and made her residuary legatee, if his nephew died. He gave to Mrs. Sarah Partridge, with whom
he was then living, an annuity of £40, etc. He wished to be buried in the "Church or Chapel
at Walthmstow," and have "a small monument - put upon ye pillar fronting the South Door of
Walthamstow Church." He gave mourning rings to several friends." March 28, 1752, Sarah
Bennett, widow, and Sarah Bennett, spinster, of Boston, as executors of the Will of Ellis
Bennet, conveyed for £333, 6s, 8d. to Benjamin Henderson of Boston, boatbuilder, 81 & 3/4
acres in four parcels - 27-1/2 acres "on the lower side of the Country road" to Lynn, bounded
N.W. on the road and on land of Robert Wait; thence the line ran sougth and west on John

road. The 48 acres north west of the road were bounded N.E. on John Bennett; N.W. on Jonathan
Hawkes; and S.W. on Samuel Breeden and Robert Wait. A woodlot of 6-1/4 acres was bounded
by Samuel Breeden, Joshua Cheever, Samuel Berry and John Bennet. There was a reference to a
plan made according to an award for the division of the premises by Samuel Watts, William
Collins and John Steel. John Bennett of London, sold to Henderson in 1755. January 13, 1786,
Benjamin Henderson of Boston, yeoman, for £800 conveyed to John Slade of Chelsea, yeoman, a
farm of 137 acres, 51 acres lay south west of the Country road. The bounds were similar to
those in the deed from Sarah Bennett, except that the lands of Samuel Vial deceased lay to the
N.E. and E. instead of land of John Bennett. The land of John Hutchinson was then "possessed"
by Thomas Wait; 86 acres lay N.W. of the road with similar bounds, lands of Samuel Viall to
the N.e. and N. All the abbutters of 1752 are described as deceased." On the same day, Slade
conveyed to Henderson a farm in Needham. His wife's name was Hannah. Henderson sold his wood-
land, 13 acres, in 1793 to Nehemiah Oakes, Winslow Sargeant and George Shute. In 1772, Samuel
Viall with his wife Mary, mortgaged to Henderson (later released) 16 acres 27 rods S.E. of
the Country road, 23 acres N.W. of the road and 8 acres of woodland; buildings were mentioned
He was described as of Lynn, tanner.
The Lynn line bounded this land to the N.E., and he appears to have owned land across the
boundary." When the direct tax of 1798 was assessed, Hannah Slade, widow of John Slade, was
owner and occupant of the southwestern portion of Elisha Bennett's farm. The house covered
1,368 feet; was of two stories, had 18 windows and was "Verry Old." With a shed and chaise
house (319 sq.ft. of one story) a corn barn at $495; 137 acres of land and a barn 40 x 30
were appraised at $2,235. This house, according to the site marked on a plan of the Slade
farm, stood on Park Avenue, almost due east from the Franklin Park Railway station. The farm
of which Elisha Bennett died seized included apparently the land within the present limits
of Revere north of the creek or Pines River, except the lands on Malden line already described. The line between the Slade and Vial farms, an irregular northwest line, passed
near the point where the railroad crosses Salem Street.

Samuel Bennet was a carpenter and a member of the Ancient Artillery Co. in
1639. A pine forest in the northern part of Lynn still retains the name of Bennet's
Swamp. He resided in the western part of Saugus and when the towns were divided the
line passed through his land, eastward of his house, so that afterward he was
called an inhabitant of Boston.

July ye 12, 1633 - I Clement Coldam aged abt 55 do testifie that the grant of
the old mill was in July ye 12, 1633 to Edward Tomlins which was the 2nd mill in the
colony. The 2nd owner of the mill and then Mr Howell did sell same to John Elderkin
and he sold it to Mr. Bennet and Mr. Bennet did sell it to Goodman Wheeler etc.

At the Quarterly Court on the 5th of July, 1645, Samuel Bennet was presented
"for saying in a scornful manner, he neither cared for the Towne nor any order the

William Hooke of Salsibury conveys to Samuel Bennet of Lynn March 15, 1649,
"all that upland that was given him by arbitration betwixt Thomas Dexter and
him or his father Humphrey Hooke" (Humphrey Hooke was prob. the Bristol alderman
referred to as mortgagee of some of Mr. Dexter's lands under date 1640.

Samuel Bennet, carpenter sold his corn mill to Thomas Wheeler April 1, 1653
for £220.
1671.
Mr. Samuel Bennet sued Mr. John Gifford, the former agent of the Iron Works
and attached the property to the amount of £400 for laber performed for the
company.

John Henry Burchsted, a native of Silesia, m. Mary, the widow of Nathaniel Kertland, April 24,
1690. Henry Burchsted, his son, was born October 3, 1690. They were both eminent physicians,
and lived on the south side of Essex Street, between High and Pearl streets. There were two
sons, both physicians - one was a surgeon in the British Navy; the other was Dr. Henry
Burchsted of Lynn, who had a son, Henry, a physician. Dr. John Henry Burchsted died September
20, 1721, aged 64.

A whale, 75 feet in length was landed on King's Beach, Lynn, on the 9th of December, 1756.
Dr. Henry Burchsted rode into the whale's mouth, in a chair drawn by a horse; and afterward
had two of the whale's bones set up for gate posts, at his house on Essex Street, where they
stood for more than fifty years. Opposite the Doctor's house - stood the cottage of Moll Pitcher, the celebrated fortune teller. And many were the sly inquiries, from strangers,
for the place where the big whale bones were to be seen.

Ebenezer Burrill, a younger brother of "the beloved Speaker," was quite
eminent in his day, and distinguished as Honorable Ebenezer Burrill. He was born
at Lynn on the 13th day of July, 1679, was a son of John Burrill, known as
Lieutenant John Burrill,
who was a son of George Burrill, the first of the name who settled here
(Lynn), and who came in 1630.
Ebenezer Burrill married Martha Farrington, and settled at Swampscott on an
estate given him by his father. The house in which he lived is still standing
(1865) on the beautiful
grounds of E. R. Mudge, Esq., a few rods from his stone villa. And the
writer may be pardoned for remarking that his inquiries regarding the Burrill
family have been somewhat minute, partly from an individual pleasure in tracing
family connections, as both his
grandmothers were granddaughters of the subject of this sketch, one a
daughter of his son Ebenezer and the other a daughter of his son, Samuel Burrill.
Mr. Ebenezer Burrill had ten children, viz:
1. Ebenezer Burrill Jr. (called Esquire), born Feb 6, 1702 who married Mary,
daughter of
General Mansfield. Their children:
1. John b. Feb 24, 1705
2. Martha b. April 21, 1707
3. Theophilus b. May 21, 1709
4. Mary b. July 31, 1711
5. Eunice b. Oct 27, 1713
6. Lois b. Aug 7, 1715
7. Samuel b. April 1, 1717
8. Sarah b. April 15, 1719
9. Lydia b. Feb 25, 1721
It would be interesting to follow somewhat at large the family connections
of Mr. Burrill, if space did permit. It was his sister, Sarah, who married
John Pickering of Salem and became grandmother of the Hon. Timothy Pickering.
His son Ebenezer Burrill,
distinguished as Ebenezer Burrill, Esquire, was town clerk seventeen years
and a Representative twelve years. He, the son lived in the house still
standing at the northeast corner of Boston
and Federal streets, [Lynn] and there it is related, on one occasion, had
the honor of the Governor's presence at dinner, while a couple of iron cannon
on Water Street, continued to belch forth their respects.
His son Samuel Burrill was a Representative during the Revolution, and a
member of the Convention for forming the State Constitution. His grandson,
James, son of Ebenezer, Esq.while a young man set up business as a tin plate
worker at Providence, R.I., became a
prominent citizen, and was one of the original members of the Providence
Association of Mechanics and Manufacturers, an association which still (1865)
continues to flourish, and
he was chosen its president in 1797, holding the office till 1809.
He likewise respresented Providence in the General Assembly in 1797. And
this James Burrill was father of the Hon. James Burrill who was appointed Chief
Justice of the Supreme Court of
R.I. in 1816, and who was soon afterward distinguished as a U.S. Senator for
that state, dying at Washington on Christmas day, 1820.
Joseph Burrill another son of Ebenezer Burrill, Esq., and grandson of the
subject of this sketch, settled at Newport, R.I. He was a tin plate worker, and
it was of him that his brother James learned his trade preparatory to
commencing business for
himself in R.I.
And the family of this Joseph Burrill was one of greast respectibility. The
wife of Hon.Henry Wheaton, LL.D., was a grandaughter of his. One or two of
the leading Salem families
were connected with the Burrills, who were facetiously styled the royal
family of Lynn.
Micajah Burrill who resided on Essex Street and died near the close of 1863,
having been buried on the 10th of December, the very day on which he would
have entered his hundreth year, was a grandson of Theophilus Burrill, the 3d
son of the patriarch whom
this sketch commemorates.
Mr. Ebenezer Burrill died the 6th of September 1761. The inscription on his
modest grave stone is unassuming, compared with many on the tablets of that
day, which are too often
airy and high sounding. But the dead should not be held
responsible for the absurdities
written above them

He was a remarkable man for sound judgement, benevolence, and activity in
all useful enterprises, was six times chosen Representative, and was a
Counsellor in 1731 and 1746.
In 1732 he was entrusted with the settlement of important business with the
Indians at Casco Bay. He possessed a large estate in lands, and was able to
provide well for his numerous family. The inventory of his estate indicates
that he lived in very
respectable style, and among his personal property may be found enumerated
one negro slave named Caesar.
In looking up the facts regarding the Burrills, I found that many of the
family themselves had but a confused idea of their ancestry. A kind of
confusion, however, by no means peculiar to this family, arising, perhaps in a great
measure, from the intermingling of
names. A recapitulatory line or two may, hence be given:
Lieutenant John, or John Burrill Sr., was the first Burrill born in Lynn,
and was a son of George, the early settler.
Honorable John, or, John Burrill Jr., and Honorable Ebenezer Burrill (the
subject of this sketch), were brothers, and sons of Lieut John.
Ebenezer Burrill, Esq., was a son of the Hon. Ebenzer Burrill.
George Burrill, Lieut. John Burrill and the Hon. John Burrill lived at Tower
Hill; Hon. Ebenezer Burrill lived at Swampscott; Ebenezer Burrill, Esq.
lived on Boston Street, corner of Federal Street, Lynn. James Burrill who settled
in R.I. and was father of
of the U.S. Senator, was a son of Ebenezer Burrill, Esq.
John Burrill, another son of Ebenezer Burrill, Esq, was father of Ebenezer
Burrill who settled in New York, and died there in 1839 and whose body, in
accordance with his dying request, was brought to Lynn and buried in our Old
Burying Ground; he, the last named John, was also father of Thompson, who died
here in 1842. The grave stones of these worthies together with those of
several other old members of the family, may be found in the south-eastern part of
the burial place just named.
Considering what has been said in this brief sketch regarding family
connections, a single remark of a general nature, in closing, may not be
inappropriate. How few realize the
important effect of marriage upon the destinies of mankind. The greatest
results, social, political, and religious, flow from the quiet operation of the
matrimonial connection.

The oldest gravestone in the burying ground, near the west end of Lynn Common, bears
the inscription:

"Here lyeth ye Body of John Clifford.
Died June ye 17, 1698, in ye 68 year
Of his age."
It is on the west of the foot path leading from the front entrance, and, unlike the
other old stones, faces east. The 9 in the date has been altered, in a rough way,
so as to resemble a 2, and hence some have been deceived into the belief that there
was a burial here as early as 1628. Mr. Lewis declared the alteration to have been
made in 1806, by a pupil at Lynn Academy. This John Clifford appears to have been
the same individual who owned lands in the vicinity of Mineral Spring. He was made
a freeman in 1678, and is sometimes called, "of Salem"; which would be natural enough
if he lived anywhere about Spring Pond.
I think he married Elizabeth Richardson, perhaps as a second wife, 28 September, 1688,
he being then some 58 years of age. Mr. Lewis states that Dr. Crowninscheldt built
a cottage at Mineral Spring about the year 1690. And in Felt's Annals of Salem, under
date 1695, we find the following:
"This year Richard Harris, Master of the Salem Packet, bound to Canada river, invites
"Doctor Grouncell (Crowninshield) a German, who married Capt. Allen's daughter at
Lynn Spring,' to accompany him, but he declined." Could it have been of his mother-
in-law, that the Doctor purchased the land, in 1700? At first view, there seems some-
thing like confusion in the above; but I do not see that the statements are irrecon-
cilable.

In 1847, Richard S. Fay, Esq., purchased the estate and also many acres of the adjoin-
ing territory, and made his summer residence there. A very large number of foreign
trees have been planted; England and France are represented - the Black Forest of
Germany; and even Russia and Siberia.
There is a pleasing variety of grove and lawn, pasture and arable ground, woodland and
meadow. And altogether the landscape is one of uncommon freshness and vigor.
In traversing the grounds,

one is forcibly reminded of feudal days and baronial domains. And if the ivyed walls
of an ancient castle could be discerned peering from some rocky crest across the lake,
the illusion might be complete. There are various historical facts of interest conn-
ected with this pleasant locality, some of which will be alluded to under dates:
1676, 1682 and 1700.
At the last date, Doctor Crowninscheldt bought the estate of Elizabeth Allen, of Salem,
which must have lain near his previous purchase, and which gave him quite an extensive
area. Or else a mistake has prevailed as to the date of his settlement here, and her
Deed indicates the period of his first coming.
The deed mentions buildings, and hence the inference that there were settlers some-
where in the vicinity of the Pond before the time of its date. Mr. Lewis, elsewhere
remarks that Dr. Crowninscheldt, who was a German, as his name indicates, was the
first white man who settled at the Spring, having built a cottage there, about the
year 1690; and adds that at the time he wrote (1844) several of the old apple trees,
planted by him, were still standing in the garden.

The beginning of the snuff business that made Saugus renowned. It was through the
advice of Samuel Fales that Mr. Makepeace undertook the snuff business, which, in
1798 he transferred to his nephew, Major Jonathan Makepeace, who continued it for
about fifty years, up to 1844, making his snuff, known as "Makepeace's snuff,"
which obtained a reputation in all parts of the country. He gave his constant
personal attention to the making of this snuff from the very best of leaf-tobacco,
cured in the most careful way; it was then ground and scented and put up in small
wooden kegs, with his own autograph on each. He was a very methodical man, upright
in all his dealings, and generous to all worthy causes, for many years a consistant
member of the Methodist Church and respected by the entire community. He was
familiarly known as Major Makepeace.

Joseph Jenks came from Hammersmith, in England. He was a machinist at the Iron Founcy,
and was a man of great genius, of which abundant evidence will be found in this book.
He made dies for coining the first money, built the first fire-engine and took out
several patents for improvements in mills and iron tools. He is said to have descended
from an ancient family in Wales. He came over a widower, leaving two sons in England,
and married a lady whose baptismal name was Elizabeth, by whom he had one son and two
daughters. He died March, 1683 and his wife died July, 1679. His children were:
1. Joseph Jenks, Jr. b. in England; resided some time in Lynn where he married Esther,
daughter of William Ballard. He then removed to Pawtucket, Rhode Island where he built
a forge, which was destroyed in the Wampanoag war in 1675.
In 1681, he was an Assistant in the government of Rhode Island; he had a son, Joseph
Jenks who was governor of Rhode Island. He had a son Joseph Jenks who was also a
governor of Rhode Island from 1727 to 1732.
2. George Jenks who went to Virginia.
3. Sarah Jenks who married John Chilson.
4. Samuel Jenks, like his father, was a workman in iron, and married Elizabeth Darling.
5. Deborah Jenks.
6. John Jenks who married Sarah Merriam.
Torrey - New England Marriages p.418:
John Jenks (1660-1698) & Sarah Merriam (1660-) he died & she m. (2) John Lewis on July 11, 1681 at Lynn.
7. Daniel Jenks who went to Rhode Island where he built several mills.
The descendants of Joseph Jenks, throughout New England, are numerous and several of
them have been eminent. Among them was the Reverend William Jenks, D.D. of Boston.

Mass. He was admitted freeman in 1637. He came to Lynn, Mass., the same year and
settled as a farmer on the eastern end of the common. He died in 1666 aged 54. His

He was justly admired for his uncommon abilities,
natural and acquired; his literature, exemplary piety,
modesty, meekness and many other humane and Christian
virtues which rendered him lovely in every relation of
Life. He died of a fever, October 9, 1765 in the 28th
year of his age.

Rev. Otis Rockwood, A.M., grad. at Midd. Coll., VT, 1813 & at the Theological Seminary
at Charlestown, where he had a call to settle as colleague pastor with the Rev. Dr.
Morse and at the same time a call from the First Congregational Church & Society at
Lynn, Mass. He accepted the latter & was ordained July 1, 1818. During his ministry
there (14 years) the church was increased to 130 members - their house of worship
rebuilt. In Dr. "Cooke's Centuries" in Lynn, there is an interesting notice of Mr.
Rockwood's ministry in Lynn from which is an extract: "But the true importance of
the work which he did here consisted of breaking the force of the time which was
bearing all to destruction and beginning to set it an opposite direction - He found
here a church having but two praying families and left it with many."

In Memory of Mr. Joseph L. Whitcomb, a native of Vermont,
Who died June 25, 1843, AEt. 32.
Through much tribulation, we enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.
John E. Weston, Minister of the Gospel, died July 2d, 1831,
AEt. 35.
He was ordained October, 1827, Pastor of the 2nd Baptist
Church in Cambridge and at the time of his death was pastor
elect of the Baptist Church, Nashua, New Hampshire. It was
while on a journey to Nashua to preach on the ensuing
Sabbath, that he was drowned in Sandy Pond at Wilmington.
This sudden and afflictive event occurred in consequence
of a deep bank near the edge of the pond, from which un-
perceived by him, he was precipated with his carriage and
sunk, in death. Thus died a most excellent husband and
father, a devoted and humble Christian, and able and ener-
getic minister, beloved by all, and bearing the noble feat-
ures of that Saviour whom he delighted to honor.
In Memory of Charles J. Weston, son of Jonas & Adeline
Weston, who died September 10, 1842, AEt. 7 weeks. Also
an infant son, died January 25, 1848.
Rest, gentle spirits, with thy Saviour, rest.
Who on earth such tender infants blest.
Childhood and manly vigor moulder beneath this stone,
Which is erected in Memory of Mr. Raphael Wheeler, who
died June 5, 1797, aged 33 years.

December 14, 1793, Aged 26 years.
Although his flight was swift and sudden too,
Yet Christ was able for to bear him through
Death's gloomy shade, and cause to inherit
Eternal life, which he for all did merit.

A boat, containing five persons, was overset, near the mouth of Saugus River on the 14th
of December, 1793 and three persons drowned. These were John Burrill, aged 67, William
Whittemore aged 27 and William Crow, aged 15 years. They had been on an excursion of
pleasure to the Pines; the afternoon was pleasant and as they were returning, the boat
was struck by a squall, which frightened them, and caused them to seek the shore, which
they probably would have gained, had not one of them jumped upon the side of the boat,
which caused it to overset. Two of them swam to shore in safety. Mr. Burrill and the
boy also gained the beach, but died in a few minutes.
