Services Held for Mrs. Mary Allport; Memorial services were held Tuesday morning at Patterson District Cemetery for
Mary AlIport, 89, a former resident of Westley who died Aug. 9 at Huntington Beach. A native of Canada, Mrs. Allport
lived in Westley 39 years before moving to Huntington Beach in 1968. She is survived by a son, Daryl Allport of
Arlington, Tex..; a daughter, Vera Franklin of Huntington Beach; a brother, Daryl Murray of Canada; eight grandchildren
and four great-grandchildren.

Maria Armenta, 65, who died the previous Friday in the local hospital after an extended illness.  Interment was in
Patterson District Cemetery. A native of Mexico, Mrs. Armenta had lived in Patterson five years. She is survived by three
sons, Armando of Mexico, Leon and Felipe Armenta of Patterson; a daughter, Delida Ruiz of Westley; a stepson, Don
Martel, and stepdaughter, Frances Rivera, both of Patterson.

Manuel A. Azevedo Services Saturday; Rosary will be said at Evans Funeral Chapel  at 8 p.m. Friday, March 1, for
Manuel A. Azevedo, 92, who died Wednesday morning at a Newman convalescent hospital. Requiem mass will be at 9
a.m. Saturday, March 2, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.  Interment will be in Patterson District Cemetery. A native of
the Azores, Azevedo had lived in Stanislaus County 58 years.  He was a retired dairyman. He is survived by three sons,
Manuel and Tony of Patterson, and John Azevedo of Santa Cruz; a daughter, Mabel Pires of Patterson; one sister, Mary
Murry of Pacific Grove; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services Held For Ada May Beamer; Services were held under the direction of the Newman Rebekab Ledge at Evans
Funeral Chapel on Wednesday morning for Ada May Reamer, 13, who died in the Saratoga IOOF home Monday.
Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery. A native of West Virginia, she lived in Patterson for 50 years before
moving to Saratoga several years ago.  She was a Past Noble Grand of the Rebekah Lodge. She is survived by a daughter,
Mary Berthelson of Coulterville; one grandson, Ray Morgan of Patterson; one granddaughter, Sarah Smith of Berkeley;
four great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren

Services Held for Knut Beite; Services were held Friday morning at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church for Knut Kristoffer
Beite, 86, who died July 3 in a Turlock hospital after a long illness.  Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery.
A native of Norway, Bette lived in Patterson 12 years before moving to Turlock in l959.  He was a retired farmer.
He is survived by his wife, Olava Beite of Turlock, and a brother and sister in Norway.

Services Held for James Blair, 63; Services were held Monday morning at the Evans Funeral Chapel for James M. Blair,
63, who died suddenly last Thursday, July 18. Mr. Blair was a native of Pennsylvania and had lived here for about 10
years.  He was a retired plaster contractor. He is survived by his wife, Mary; a son, Fred A. Blair; a daughter, Patricia
Ann Teixeira; and 11 grandchildren, all of Patterson. Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery.

Services Today For Mrs. Anice Bullock; Services will be held at 10 am this morning, Thursday, at the Evans Funeral
Chapel for Anice Bullock, 38, who died Saturday at Stanford University Hospital after a long illness.  Additional services
and interment will be at Jerome, Idaho, Monday. A native of Idaho, she graduated from Jerome High School and attended
Merced Junior College.  She was active in church work. She is survived by her husband Jack Bullock; three sons, Lyle,
Brian and Neal Bullock; and one daughter, Laura Bullock, all of Los Banos; her mother, Vada Posey; and two brothers,
Frank and Alan Posey, all of Jerome, Idaho; and a sister, Marian Anderson of Sacramento.

Autopsy of 2 Bodies Reveals Both Shot; The possibility of murder became definite early this week after an autopsy
revealed that two young adults were shot about two months ago. Their decomposed bodies were found late Sunday
afternoon in a small house on Marshall Road belonging to Earnest F. Nunes of Crows Landing.  The autopsy the next day
revealed both the men and the woman were each shot once.  Two shell casings were found at the scene. The body of the
women has been identified as that of Charlotte Lee Melborg, 21.  Her husband Robert and two young children reportedly
moved out of the Marshall Road house they rented from Nunes sometime late in October, and moved to southern
California. The other body remains tentatively identified as that of Russell Lee Buse, 27 of  Patterson.  He reportedly had
been seeing Mrs. Melborg prior to the breakup of her marriage. The bodies were found after John N. Silva of 2842
Apricot Ave. went to the Nunes property to remove rabbit hutches.  He reported the strong odor coming from the small
house on the back portion of the property to Nunes, and Nunes entered the house by removing a padlock on the back
door.  The front door was locked from the inside, all of the windows were closed, and the lights were off. A paper dated
Oct. 21 was found in the house.  Mrs. Melborg was arrested in Patterson for being drunk. in public that same day.
Her body was found nude, lying spread eagled and face up in the living room.  The body of the man was fully clothed
except for shoes and was discovered in a corner of the same room.

Body Identified As Russell Lee Buse; Russell Lee Buse, 27, whose body was found late in December at 3243 Marshall
Rd., will be buried in Seattle, Wash.  Positive identification of his remains was made the past week.  Arrangements are
being handled by Evans Funeral chapel. Buse was a native of Washington.  A Vietnam veteran, he was a carpenter by
trade. Survivors include his mother, Thelma Buse of Washington.

Modesto Youth Killed in Crash; Seventeen-year-old Derald E. Campbell of Modesto was killed last Friday when the car
in which he was riding failed to negotiate a turn on the Del Puerto Canyon Road west of Patterson. Also injured were the
driver, Robert Whitehead, also of Modesto, and James Cunningham of Ceres.  The California Highway Patrol said the
three were on the way to the rough terrain area in a four wheel drive -vehicle, but decided to turn back because they were
not sure they had enough gasoline.

Memorial Fund Starts For Karen Cardoza; Karen Cardoza, 17, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Manuel Cardoza of
Patterson, was killed instantly late Tuesday when the vehicle in which she was riding collided with a pickup on the Del
Puerto Canyon Road. The driver of the car, John Vincent Jurevich, 17, also of Patterson, was critically injured in the
crash.  Late yesterday, Wednesday, he still was listed in serious condition in the intensive care unit of Doctors  Hospital
in Modesto.  A PHS senior he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Jurevich of Patterson. Three occupants of the pickup also
sustained injuries.  Leonard Groves of Livermore, the driver, was treated for lacerations and released; his wife, Carolyn,
was treated for injuries including a fractured arm; and daughters Becky and Lisa Groves were released from Del Puerto
Hospital at noon yesterday after being treated for minor injuries. The accident occurred shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday, a
mile west of Interstate 5.  The California Highway Patrol said both vehicles were apparently traveling about 55 miles per
hour and Jurevich s eastbound car had crossed over the center line before the collision. The rosary will be said for Karen
tonight, Thursday, at 7:30 p.m. in the Sacred Heart Church.  Funeral mass is to be said at 10 a.m. Friday at the church.
Interment will be in Patterson District Cemetery. A native of Patterson, Karen attended local schools and was active in
school affairs.  She was president of the junior class, vice president of GAA, an honor roll student, member of Girls
Leadership and this year s winter sports varsity queen.  She also found time to work at Mil s Drive In. Besides her
parents, she leaves a sister, Marlene Cardoza of Patterson; and grandmothers, Maria Cardoza of Monterey and Anna
Machado of Turlock. Fellow students at Patterson High School have established a memorial fund in Karen s name.
Contributions may be put in the container at city hall or in the one at the high school.

Carlson, 63, who died suddenly Sunday at her home of an apparent heart attack.  Interment was in Patterson  District
Cemetery. A native of South Dakota, she had lived in Patterson 61 years. Mrs. Carlson in survived by her husband,
Eugene; four sons, James Douglas and Richard J. of Patterson, Daniel Eugene of Reno, and Gerald Wayne Carlson of Ft.
Ord; and two sisters, Mrs. Arthur Leaf of Patterson and Mrs. Herman Lindval of Modesto.

Services Held For Mari Carter; Services were conducted Monday morning at Evans Funeral Chapel for Mari Jayne
Carter, 31, who died unexpectedly at her brother s Turlock home last Thursday.  Interment was in Patterson District
Cemetery. Deputy coroners said her death apparently was caused by a drug overdose.  A native of Patterson, she had
lived here until moving to Turlock. She is survived by twin sons, Landon and Randon Carter, both of Turlock; her father,
Floyd Russell of Grayson; one brother, Alton Russell of Turlock, and a sister, Letha Mott of Hughson.

Requiem Said for Henry Castro Sr.; Requiem mass was said Monday morning at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Henry
F. Castro, 77, who died at the local hospital last Thursday night following an extended illness.  Interment was in
Patterson District Cemetery. Castro came to California in 1913 from his native Azores, arriving in the Westley area in
1933.  He was a retired rancher.  His memberships included IDES, UPEC, FDES, and YMI.  Castro and his wife, Lena,
celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Sept. 1972. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Henry Castro Jr. of Westley;
three daughters, Lena Friedrich and Bernice Grischott, both of Westley, and Carolyn Deiphia of Patterson; two brothers,
Chris and Tony Castro, both of Tracy, and a sister, Rachel Sequiera of Tracy; 10 grandchildren and 9 great-
grandchildren.

Murder Victim Had Lived Here; Roger Leon Clem, who had resided in Patterson until recently, was found shot to death
last Saturday in the Ceres main Canal near Turlock. Deputies said Clem, 25, was the victim of an "execution" type
slaying.  An autopsy revealed he had been shot at least five times in the head; at least three of the slugs had been fired at
close range just behind the left ear.  His body was spotted by a ditch-tender Saturday morning in a canal drop near
Fulkerth Road.

Local Woman Killed In Monday Car Crash; The second tragic automobile accident in the Patterson area in less than a
week has claimed the life of 34-year-old Angelina Cordova of Tenbrink Street, Patterson, and critically injured her
daughter, Letisa Cordova, 18. The three-car crash occurred shortly before 2 p.m. Monday at Jennings and Grayson Roads
between Patterson and Ceres. Mrs. Cordova was taken to Doctors  Hospital of Modesto with internal injuries and died
during surgery. Her daughter was admitted to the hospital s intensive care unit with critical injuries. She was taken off
the critical list Tuesday and late yesterday, Wednesday, was listed in serious condition.  Another passenger, Mrs.
Angelina Alvarado, 36, of Grayson, was listed late yesterday in fair but improved condition.  Treated for minor injuries
were Mrs. Alvarado s children, Angela, 2, and Jesus, 11.  The accident occurred when a car driven northbound on
Jennings Road by Teresa Craven, 18, of Patterson, pulled away from a stop sign at Grayson Road into the path of the
eastbound vehicle driven by Miss Cordova, according to the California Highway Patrol. After striking Miss Craven s car,
the Cordova vehicle veered head-on into a pickup driven by Leo Henry Foletta of W. Keyes Road.  Miss Cordova was
pinned in the demolished vehicle for nearly an hour before she was freed by rescuers.  Miss Craven was treated and
released.  Foletta, 36, and a passenger, Daniel Miranda, 18, of Ceres, were not seriously injured.  A native of Iowa, Mrs.
Cordova had lived in Patterson seven years. She is survived by her husband, Ubaldo Cordova; four daughters, Letisa,
Elizabeth, Silvia, and Sandra Cordova; and a son, Jivier Cordova, all of Patterson; and her parents and two sisters in
Mexico.  Services are pending at Evans Funeral Chapel.

Daran Craven Services Held Here Monday; Services were held Monday morning at Evans Funeral Chapel for Daran
Irene Craven, 43, who died Friday in a Modesto hospital. Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery. A native of
Oklahoma, Mrs. Craven bad lived in this area 35 years. She is survived by her husband James of Patterson; two sons,
James Grant and Melvin Gil Craven; a daughter, Theresa Evelyn Craven, all of Patterson; three brothers, five sisters
including Doris Parrish of Modesto; and two granddaughters. Mrs. Craves, who had a history of heart trouble, was
stricken with a heart attack last Wednesday, Oct. 16, in a local beauty shop.  A local doctor was called, as well as the
Patterson Fire Department with its resuscitation unit.  City Manager Tom Calabrese gave mouth to mouth resuscitation
until the unit arrived, and the doctor gave heart massage at the scene.  She was taken to the Del Puerto Hospital, then
transferred to the Modesto hospital.

Services Held Saturday for Carrie Cripe; Services were held Saturday at Evans Funeral Chapel for Carrie Maudel Cripe,
83, who died the previous Wednesday at a Newman convalescent hospital following a short illness.  Interment was in
Patterson District Cemetery.  Mrs. Cripe was a native of Illinois. She had lived in Patterson 50 years. She is survived by
one son, Cyril Cripe of Patterson; two daughters, Naomi Germolus of Patterson and Irene Conklin of Long Beach; a
brother, Clifford Van Horn of Illinois; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services Pending for Jose Cruz; Services are pending in Mexico for Jose Mora Cruz, 36, who died in a single car
accident on Highway 33 near Ike Crow Road north of Crows Landing last Friday. A native of Mexico, Cruz had lived
here seven years. He is survived by two brothers, Mora and Vsevio Cruz; and one sister, Maria Cruz, all of Mexico.

Services Held For Jesus M. Curiel; Requiem mass was held Saturday at 9 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church for
Jesus Machaine Curiel, 74, who died in a Turlock hospital on Wednesday, Feb. 20.  Interment was in Patterson District
Cemetery. Curiel was a native of Mexico.  A retired agricultural foreman for Turlock Fruit Company, he had lived here
15 years. He is survived by his wile, Aurelia of Patterson; three sons, Armando of Modesto, Hefren of Turlock and
Carlos Curiel of Salinas; one daughter, Lydia Alta Mirano of Patterson; a brother, Louie of Brawley; a sister, Maria
Ramirez of Sonora; and nine grandchildren.

1 Dead in Crows Landing Jet Crash; An investigation team is meeting to determine the cause of a crash at the Crows
Landing Auxiliary Landing Field Tuesday evening that took the life of an Air National Guardsman. Killed was
Guardsman Gary Curtis, 29, of Cupertino, who was crushed in the area of his chest.  The injuries to pilot Dale Mayo, 31,
of Alam, were not considered to be serious. Curtis was first taken to the Del Puerto hospital after the 6 pm accident, then
transferred to Scenic General Hospital in Modesto.  He died about 1 am Wednesday. Mayo was transferred to the
hospital at Castle Air Force Base. The small jet plane, termed an Air National Guard U-10 by a spokesman at the Crows
Landing base, had left Hayward about 4:30 pm during touch and go landings. Information being released was sketchy,
leading to speculation that the small plane was ‘classified' by the government.

De Oliveira Sr. Dies in Newman; Requiem mass was said Wednesday at St. Joachim s Catholic Church in Newman for
well-known Westside rancher Manuel De Oliveira Sr., 58, who died suddenly on Sunday morning.  Interment was in
Hills Ferry Cemetery. De Oliveira was a native of St. Miguel in the Azores and had lived in this area 40 years.  He is
survived by his wife, Carrie of Newman; three sons, Manuel of Newman, Joaquin of Stockton and Frankie De Oliveira of
Patterson; two daughters, Rosalie Holmquist of Gustine and Caroline Smith of Texas; his mother, Serafine De Oliveira of
Newman; three brothers, Joe Jr. of Newman, Tony J. Oliveira of Newark and Albert J. Oliveira of Stockton; five sisters,
Elsie Silveira, Agnes Silveira and Mary Fantazia, all of Newman, Dorothy Menezes of Gustine and Sara Martell of
Patterson; and seven grandchildren.

Caroline Margaret Del Nero, 64, who died in the local hospital Monday after a lengthy illness. Interment was in Patterson
District Cemetery.  A native of California, she had lived in Patterson 58 years. She is survived by her husband, Olimpio
Del Nero of Patterson; two daughters, Ruby Herger of Patterson and Marie Mudgett of Syracuse, New York; a son,
Charlie Del Nero of Patterson; a sister, Stella Yoppini of Patterson; a brother, Joe Feloi of Newman six grandchildren
and one great-grandchild.

Services Held For Olimpio Del Nero; Services were held Wednesday morning at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for
Olirnpio Charlie Del Nero, 81, who died Saturday in the local hospital just 20 days after the death of his wife, Caroline.
Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery. A native of Italy, he lived here 64 years and was employed by the Patterson
Irrigation District 19 years. Del Nero is survived by two daughters, Ruby Herger of Patterson and Marie Mudgett of New
York; a son, Charlie Del Nero of Patterson; a brother, Julio of Italy; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services Held for Anista Delgado; Services were held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Wednesday morning for Anista
Delgado, 84, who died Saturday in a Tracy hospital.  Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery.  A native of Mexico,
she lived in Patterson 30 years before moving recently to Grayson to reside with her son, Alfredo Delgado. Besides her
son she leaves two daughters, Mary Sandoval of Lathrop and Lucy Penido of Westley; 32 grandchildren, 43 great-
grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Accident Claims Life of Community Leader; Funeral services were held here Monday for Patterson community leader
and business man John B. Delphia, who was killed last week when the grader he was driving overturned on a levee near
Marshall Road and Highway 33. Delphia, 64, was operating the heavy machinery on a levee bordering a sump pond on
the Crows Landing Naval Auxiliary Landing Field property being rented to Patterson Frozen Foods when the accident
occurred Thursday. His body was discovered about 4 p.m. pinned beneath the overturned grader.  The grader was not
visible from the Highway 33 and was some distance from Marshall Road. The accident bore a striking resemblance to an
earlier tragedy which claimed the life of his younger brother, Elwyn, who was killed four years ago by a runaway
bulldozer during a brush fire in the Del Puerto Canyon.  Delphia was elected mayor of the city of Patterson in 1948,
holding the position until 1953, when he succeeded the retiring Frank Raines as the District 5 representative on the
Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors.  He retired from the county governing board in June 1856. A native of Vernalis,
Delphia moved to Patterson in 1942 and began business here.  He purchased the historic "Del Puerto Hotel in 1954; he
and about 150 friends and well-wishers celebrated his 20 years as owner-operator of the hotel only two weekends ago.
Delphia was active in both community and professional organizations and served as president of the Patterson Rotary and
20-30 Clubs, the Patterson-Westley Chamber of Commerce and the Patterson Cemetery District.  He was a longtime
member of the Patterson Volunteer Fire Department, and served as its first assistant chief. He was serving on both the
cemetery district and the Patterson Hospital District boards of directors.  He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge,
Aahmes Shrine Temple, Eastern Star and Scottish Rite. Entombment at Parkview Cemetery in Stockton followed the
Monday service. He leaves his widow Virginia, two sons, Claude of Patterson and John B. Delphia Jr. of Detroit; three
sisters, Ellen Apel of Stockton, Dorris Ott and Norma Chesnut of Bakersfield; and a brother George Delphia of Portland,
Ore.

Body Found Near Bridge Wednesday; The body of an unidentified man was discovered shortly before noon Wednesday
under the Las Palmas bridge. No identification was found on the body by investigating officers, who noted the man was
either severely beaten or had been thrown from a passing vehicle.  The body was discovered on the cement beneath the
bridge by Melvin Tucker of Fremont.  Tucker reported the find at Patterson City Hall, and noted he was visiting relatives
in Turlock and had driven to the San Joaquin River to go fishing. Tucker accompanied sheriff s officers back to the
scene. Unconfirmed reports indicated the man was moderately dressed and well groomed.

No Clues Yet to Identity of Body; Stanislaus County Sheriff's detectives still have no clue to the identity of a body found
by a fisherman last week beneath the Las Palmas Ave. Bridge. Officers did determine the victim was killed by a single
gun shot wound to the head, and evidently thrown from the bridge last Tuesday night or early Wednesday. The body is
described as a male of Mexican descent, with a small mustache.  Detective Gary Crawshaw, who is handling the
investigation, said the search for clues has led nowhere: "We've got nothing'."

Harry B. Eachus Dies in Ben Lomond; Private services were held recently in Santa Cruz for Harry B. Eachus, 94, who
died Feb. 4 in a Ben Lomond rest home. Inurement was at Brentwood.  Eachus, a native of Oroville, moved as a child
with his parents to the Newman-Gustine area, and ranched in the Gustine, San Jose and Patterson areas for many years.
He is survived by a daughter, Harlene Cripe of Santa Cruz.

Mrs. Ernhart Dies in Phoenix; Services will be held this morning, Thursday, at 10 a.m. in the Evans Funeral Chapel for
Mary Ann Ernhart, 66, who died Sunday in Phoenix, Ariz. while visiting her sister, Rose Bryant.  Interment will be in
Patterson District Cemetery. A native of Texas, Mrs. Ernhart had lived in Westley for 20 years before moving to Salida
10 years ago. Besides her sister, she leaves two daughters, Grace Hale of Westley and Martha Cooper of Salida; four
sons, LeRoy and Jim of Modesto, Bill of Santa Rosa and Joe Ernhart of Colorado; 14 grandchildren and two great-
grandchildren.

Grayson for Margarita Esparza, 37, who died last Wednesday in a Modesto hospital after an extended illness.  Interment
was in Patterson District Cemetery. A native of Calexico, Mrs. Esparza had lived in Grayson 20 years. She is survived by
her husband, Gaspar; four daughters, Margarita Munoz, Gloria, Matilda and Mary Esparza; four sons, David, Erille,
Manuel and Gaspar Esparza Jr., all of Grayson; a sister; four brothers; and five grandchildren.

 for Maria Ester Felex, 14 months, who died Tuesday in a Modesto hospital after a brief illness.  Interment will be in
Patterson District Cemetery. A native of Patterson, she is survived by her parents Mr. and Mrs. Rigoberto Felex.

Mrs. Bonnie Moore of Patterson.  Mrs. Futrell died suddenly at her home Oct. 13.  Interment was in the I.O.O.F.
Cemetery at Hollister. A native of Iowa, she had lived in Hollister 30 years.  She was employed by San Benito County,
working in the Head Start Program and at the County Day Care Center.  Her memberships included the Rebekah Lodge,
Business and Professional Women's Club, the Hollister Women's Club; and she was founder and president of the
Hollister Doll Club. Besides her daughter, Mrs. Futrell leaves her husband, Vernon of Hollister; four other daughters;
two brothers; a sister; 17 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Services Today For Deputy C. Hetzel; Services will be held here today, Thursday, for Charles Hetzel, 32, who died
Saturday afternoon at Stanford University Hospital. Hetzel suffered a cerebral hemorrhage last Thursday morning at the
home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hetzel of Patterson.  He was a Stanislaus County Deputy Sheriff since 1970,
and prior to that served as a policeman in Willits. With the permission of his parents, his heart was transplanted to an
unnamed recipient Saturday afternoon.  They also consented to donating his kidneys for a transplant. Hetzel was born in
San Francisco, attended high school in Humboldt County and Santa Rosa Junior College and San Jose State College. He
served in the Army from 1960 to 1963.  He is survived by his parents; two sisters, Sally Waller of Escalon and Linda
Bird of Fresno; and two half- brothers, Leonard Johnson of Patterson and Roger Johnson. Services will be held at 10 a.m.
today at the Evans Funeral Chapel, with interment in Patterson District Cemetery.

Apostolic Movement Church in Grayson with interment in the Patterson District Cemetery.  He died in a Modesto
hospita1 Saturday morning after having been found unconscious the previous Wednesday in an unused service station in
Westley. A native of San Jose, Hidalgo was a cabinet maker and had made his home for the last eight years with his
brother, Rev. Samuel Hidalgo of the Apostolic Movement Church. He is survived by two daughters, Virginia and Sandra
Hidalgo of Berkeley; three brothers, Louis Jr. of San Jose; the aforementioned Samuel of Westley; and Nehenias of Mira
Loma; two sisters, Rebecca Gonzales of Modesto and Lila Zamorano of Tulare.

Lokka, 68, who was found dead in his room at the Welty Hotel last Thursday by hotel manager John Petty.  Death was
apparently from natural causes. A native of South Dakota, Lokka moved here with his family in 1910. He was formerly a
professional golfer, having been at a Modesto course at one time.  More recently he worked as a gardener. He is survived
hy two brothers, S. E. of Banning and A.B. Lokka of lnglewood; an aunt, Mrs. Ella Knutson of Patterson; two nephews
and three cousins.

Mahaffey Sr. Dies in Newman, Services Friday; Long-time Patterson resident James S. Mahaffey Sr., 97, died at a
Newman convalescent home Tuesday. Rev. Eugene Brackney will officiate at services to be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. in
the Evans Funeral Chapel.  Interment will be in Patterson District Cemetery. Mahaffey, a native of Missouri, had lived
and worked in Colorado, Idaho and southern California before moving permanently to Patterson in 1920.  Prior to his
retirement in 1939 he was an engineer with Tidewater Associated Oil Co. here. Starting in 1924 with the purchase of land
on which there were a few apricots, Mahaffey became one of the first apricot growers in the area.  Gradually buying
more acres, he eventually also grew almonds and lima beans.  He retired from farming in the early 1960 s. He is survived
by a son, James S. Mahaffey Jr. of Patterson; a sister, Ora Hilburn of Oklahoma; a grandson, Capt. Michael J. Mahaffey
of Germany; two granddaughters, Lynell Kirk of El Sobrante, and Carol Mahaffey of Patterson; and two great-grandsons.
The family requests that any remembrances be in the form of donations to a favored charitable organization.

Church for Marguerete Souza Martins, 62, who died in the local hospital Saturday.  Interment was in Patterson District
Cemetery. A native of the Azores, she had lived in Patterson 40 years.  Her memberships included SPRSI and UPPEC.
Mrs. Martins is survived by her husband, Manuel of Patterson; one son, Joe Martin of Manteca; two brothers in Tracy,
one brother in Los Angeles, two sisters in Tracy; and six grandchildren.

Autopsy of 2 Bodies Reveals Both Shot; The possibility of murder became definite early this week after an autopsy
revealed that two young adults were shot about two months ago. Their decomposed bodies were found late Sunday
afternoon in a small house on Marshall Road belonging to Earnest F. Nunes of Crows Landing.  The autopsy the next day
revealed both the men and the woman were each shot once.  Two shell casings were found at the scene. The body of the
women has been identified as that of Charlotte Lee Melborg, 21.  Her husband Robert and two young children reportedly
moved out of the Marshall Road house they rented from Nunes sometime late in October, and moved to southern
California. The other body remains tentatively identified as that of Russell Lee Buse, 27 of  Patterson.  He reportedly had
been seeing Mrs. Melborg prior to the breakup of her marriage. The bodies were found after John N. Silva of 2842
Apricot Ave. went to the Nunes property to remove rabbit hutches.  He reported the strong odor coming from the small
house on the back portion of the property to Nunes, and Nunes entered the house by removing a padlock on the back
door.  The front door was locked from the inside, all of the windows were closed, and the lights were off. A paper dated
Oct. 21 was found in the house.  Mrs. Melborg was arrested in Patterson for being drunk. in public that same day.
Her body was found nude, lying spread eagled and face up in the living room.  The body of the man was fully clothed
except for shoes and was discovered in a corner of the same room.

Grayson; six daughters including Ermila Meza of Riverbank, Lucille Barrabarragan and Lydia Gallardo of Turlock, and
Rebecca Beltran of Westley; 47 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren; and five sisters.

Body Found in Canal May be Westley Man; The Sheriff s Department is checking on the identify of a body found
Wednesday in the Delia Mendota Canal near Newman.  It is thought to be that of Pablo Munez, 28, of Westley, whose
car plunged into the canal Feb. 14 when Munez was driving on a canal bank near McCracken Road. A passenger in the
vehicle, Raul Bautista, leaped before the car went into the water and escaped injury.  The car was found in the water that
same evening, but the window in the driver s side was open.

Fresno and Modesto before moving to Patterson in 1929. She was preceded in death by her husband G.B. Nicolds and her
son, John. She is survived by two grandchildren, Richard Nicolds of Patterson and Linda Raffo of Freano; three great

Rev. Olson Dies In Glendale; Services were held at noon Wednesday in the Wee Kirk of the Heather, Forest Lawn
Cemetery, for the Rev. Arthur Olson, 68, who died Jan.6 in a Glendale hospital after becoming critically ill Christmas
Eve. A native of Nebraska, Rev. Olson was the pastor of Our Saviour s Lutheran Church from January of 1964 to July
31, 1972 when he retired.  He served the Lutheran Church 29 years, doing parish work, Bible conference work, as a guest
speaker for various congregations, and as an evangelist and teacher. He is survived by his wile, Esther of La Canada; and
one daughter, Mrs. Richard May of Washington.

had, lived in California since 1913 and came to Patterson eight years ago.  He was a veteran of World War I and a retired

Patterson, Elsie Dutra of Newman and Lucille Combs of Montana; and three nephews, Henry and David of Patterson and

Masonic Rites Held For Myron Riddle; Masonic rites were held Tuesday morning at Evans Funeral Chapel for Myron
Ellsworth Riddle, 74, whose body was found in the closed garage at his home early Friday morning.  Investigators from
the Stanislaus County Sheriff s Department found he had taken his own life, but left no note.  Interment was in Patterson
District Cemetery. Riddle was a native of Wisconsin and had lived in Patterson about 50 years.  Before retiring several
years ago, he had been manager of Libby, McNeil & Libhy and then of Golden Valley Creamery.  Elected to the city
council in 1944, he served as mayor of Patterson from 1944 to 1948.  He was a member of the Patterson Masonic Lodge
and the Patterson Man's Group. He is survived by his daughters, Beverly Beedie of Sacramento and Barbara Evans of
Stockton; a brother in Wisconsin, and four grandchildren. The family requests that any remembrances be made to the
American Cancer Society.

the wife of former Patterson resident Karl Robinson.  She lived here briefly in 1968 prior to their move to Eureka.

Modesto Man Dies in Farm Accident; A Modesto man, 47 year old Sam Salsi, was killed near Westley last Saturday
when he attempted to enter a moving truck and was crushed beneath the dual tires, according to witnesses. Salsi, of 1533
Grape Ave., was working in an almond orchard off of McCracken Road when the accident occurred. He was taken to Del
Puerto Hospital, where ho died about an hour later.

Man Killed on Highway 33; Benny Sanchez, about 45, a resident of a labor camp near Patterson was killed instantly early
Monday when struck by a car being driven north on Highway 33 near Baldwin Road.  The car s driver, Horace
Uptegraph of Modesto, did not see Sanchez until the time of impact. CHP officers said Sanchez, in dark clothes and
possibly intoxicated, walked into the path of Uptegraph s car.

Local Woman s Father Dies in Santa Barbara; D.H. Schauer, 102, prominent pioneer businessman of Santa Barbara
passed away June 21 in a Santa Barbara hospital following a period of failing health.  Well-known in Patterson, he was
the father of Elizabeth Lemcke. He was born in Gambier, Ohio January 2, 1872, the son of Jacob and Mary Goldsboro
Schauer.  On June 27, 1895, he married Dora Holman at Ellis, Kansas.  Schauer was in the printing business in Atchison,
Kansas prior to moving to Santa Barbara in 1905.  In 1911 he founded and created the Schauer Printing Studio.  In recent
years he was Chairman of the Board until the business was sold 2 years ago.  He was a graduate of Midland College of
Fremont, Nebraska and when he attended his 75th anniversary of graduation celebration, he was the only surviving
member of his graduating class. In Santa Barbara he was active in civic affairs, having served as president of the Santa
Barbara Chamber of Commerce in 1921. His activities in the scouting program were many and varied and he received
The Silver Beaver Award. He was also a member of the Cosmopolitan Club and the Channel City Club.  Schauer was a
charter member of the Santa Barbara Rotary Club which was formed in November of 1917.  He was well known for his
ability to play the piano which Rotarians and others in the community enjoyed.  A Mason, he was a member of Santa
Barbara Lodge No. 192 F&AM; Scottish Rite Mason member of Santa Barbara Valley; The Al Malaikh Temple, the
largest Shrine Temple in the world, and the Santa Barbara Shrine Club.  He was also a member of the First Presbyterian
Church of Santa Barbara. His wife, Dora Schauer, passed away in Santa Barbara in July of 1952.  Survivors besides Mrs.
Lemcke include his son Roscoe H. Schauer, Santa Barbara and daughter Mrs. Tevis, Mildred, Martin of San Francisco;
two grandchildren, Tevis Martin II of San Carlos, California and Mrs. Robert Wagner of Elm Grove, Wisconsin; ten
great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  Services were held Monday in the Welch-Ryce Chapel with the
Reverend Robert Cameron Miller of First Presbyterian Church and Santa Barbara Lodge No. 192 A&FM officiating.
Interment was in Santa Barbara Cemetery.  Friends who prefer may remember their favorite charity in memory of D.H.
Schauer.

Joseph Souza Dies Suddenly at Foster City; Word has been received of the death of former Pattersonite Joseph Oliver
Souza, 59, of Foster City Tuesday, Feb. 12.  Sousa suffered a massive heart attack while enroute to work and was
pronounced dead on arrival at a San Mateo hospital.  Cremation was at Sky Lawn Cemetery, San Mateo. A native or
Massachusetts, Sousa was a 1934 graduate of Patterson High School.  He joined the United States Navy in 1937, retiring
as a Chief Warrant Officer in 1951, attended Modesto Junior College and the University of California, Berkeley, and
retired from civil service in 1973. At the time of his death he was employed by Earl & Wright Engineers of San
Francisco. He is survived by his wife, Bettebelle; one son, Michael, both of Foster City; a daughter, Jo Ann of San
Francisco; and a brother, Matthew 0. Sousa Jr. of Santa Monica.

Services Held for David Stevenson; Services were held Wednesday afternoon at Evans Funeral Chapel for David Isaiah
Stevenson Jr., 57, who died of an apparent heart attack suffered while at work Monday morning.  Interment was in
Patterson District Cemetery. Stevenson was a native of Texas and had 1ived here 40 years.  He was a ditch tender for the
West Stanislaus Irrigation District for 26 years. He is survived by his wife, Bessie of Grayson; three daughters, Louise
Gardner and Norma Perez of Patterson, and Sandra Criswell of Grayson; two brothers, Louis of Modesto and Clarence
Stevenson of Texas; two sisters, Evelyn Lambert of Modesto and Dorothy Stevens of Lodi; and nine grandchildren.

Transient Found Dead Wednesday; A transient farm worker, Ted Sullivan, 62, was found dead near his vehicle early
Wednesday morning.  The camper-style vehicle was parked in a bean field on the south side of Orestimba Crest off
Eastin Road. He apparently died of natural causes.  The body was found by his employer, Lewis Washburn, and was
taken to the Evans-Krieger Funeral Chapel in Newman.

Merneva Swift; Graveside services were held at Patterson District Cemetery Tuesday afternoon for Merneva Ester Swift,
89, who died last Friday in a Newman convalescent hospital.  A native of Missouri, she had lived in Modesto 25 years.
Mrs. Swift is survived by a son, Leroy of Modesto, and three sisters.

Mrs. Mabel Thorpe Dies in Wisconsin; Memorial services were held Monday at Evans Funeral Chapel for Mabel
Thorpe, 89, who died the previous Wednesday in a rest home at Waupaca, Wisconsin.  Burial was in Patterson District
Cemetery, next to the body of her husband. Mrs. Thorpe was the widow of Rev. H. J. Thorpe who was pastor of Our
Saviour's Lutheran Church from 1916-1918 and again served the church here from 1929-1933. She is survived by two
daughters, one in Wisconsin and the other of Yakima, Wash.

died in the local hospital Friday after a short illness.  Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery. A native of Kansas,
he was a retired Westley restaurant owner and had lived here 21 years. He is survived by his wife Anna of Westley;
three sons, John W. and Harold L. Tucker of Patterson and George E. Tucker of Rancho Cordova; two daughters, Mary
Beech of New Jersey and Ida Tucker of San Francisco; one brother; two sisters; 10 grandchildren and two great-
grandchildren.

Mattie Valerius Dies in Oklahoma; Word has been received of the death in Oklahoma of Mattie Vaterius. Services for
her were held there Monday. A long-time resident of Patterson prior to moving to Paoli, Okla. several years ago, Mrs.
Valerius is survived by her husband, Leonard of Paoli.

Service Held for Mrs. Virgin; Requiem mass was said Tuesday morning at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Patsy
Endencio Virgen, 39, who was fatally injured early Saturday morning in an auto accident on Crows Landing Road near
Catfish Camp.  Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery. A native of Arizona, Mrs. Virgen had 1ived in Patterson 23
years. She was an employee of the Patterson Unified School District and worked in the migrant program. She is survived
by her husband, Jesus; three sons, Jessie Jr., Greg and Albert Virgen; two daughters, Sarah and Cesilia Virgen, all of
Patterson; her mother, Mrs. Eduvijes Ruiz of Sanger; and three sisters, Connie Busio of Modesto, Susi Sanchez and
Frances Pena, both of Sanger. MRS. VIRGEN was a passenger in a pickup truck driven by her husband on Crows
Landing Road.  The family's auto had been reported stolen in Modesto earlier in the evening, and the truck had been
borrowed. Charged with misdemeanor manslaughter, eight counts of felony drunk driving and driving on a suspended
operator's license is Willie Duran Porter, 22, of Stevinson.  He appeared for arraignment Tuesday in Patterson Justice
Court, and a continuance was granted to allow time for Porter to consult with an attorney.  He is being held in lieu of
$2500 bail, and Judge Reuben Swanson Tuesday refused to release Porter on his own recognizance. Porter, two
passengers in his vehicle, and six others in the Virgen pickup including Mr. Virgen suffered cuts and bruises.  The Porter
auto reportedly was attempting to pass the Virgen pickup when the accident occurred, rolling the pickup down a 30-foot
embankment. Mrs. Virgen was dead on arrival at Scenic General Hospital in Modesto.

Services Held for Mary Wells; Services were held Tuesday morning at Evans funeral Chapel for Mary E. Wells, 90, who
died last Friday in a Newman convalescent home after a short illness.  Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery.
Mrs. Wells was a native of Tennessee and had lived here 38 years. She is survived by five daughters, including Lois Fant
of Westley, Emily Thomas of Turlock, and Mamie Montgomery and Bessie Trammell, both of Modesto; two sons,
including Johnnie Wells of Keyes; 23 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services Here For James L. Wesley; Services were held last Saturday for Leroy "Tex" Wesley, 64, who died Sept. 3 in
the Veterans Hospital at Livermore. He was a native of Texas who had lived in the Patterson area for 26 years. Wesley
was a veteran of World War II.  Rev. Merel Thornton conducted the service at the Evans Funeral Chapel.  Interment was
in Patterson District Cemetery. Survivors include three sisters, Fern Ludlum and Bertha Ulmer, both of Patterson, and
Fawn Berends of Trona, Ca; two brothers, Carl of Gallup, New Mexico and Gus of Plainview, Texas; three step sisters
and three step brothers.

Services Today for Ellen C Williams Graveside services will be held today, Thursday, at 2:30 p.m. in Acacia Cemetery,
Modesto, for Ellen Cecil Williams, 68, who was found dead of apparent natural causes in her home Sunday night.
A native of Missouri, she had lived here 30 years.  Mrs. Williams was a member of Eastern Star. She is survived by two
daughters, Patricia Hoffman of Sacramento and Darleen Prevey of Petaluma, and two grandchildren.

Final Rites Given Local Businessman; Services were held at Evans Funeral Chapel Tuesday morning for long-time
Patterson resident and businessman, Virgil VerDayne Williams, 61, who died in a Modesto hospital Aug. 16 after a short
illness.  Rev. Eugene Brackney officiated as Masonic Rites were conducted by Patterson Lodge #488, F.&A.M.
Interment was in Patterson District Cemetery. Williams, a native of Mt. Union, Iowa, came to Patterson in 1918.  He
became plant superintendent of the Evans telephone Co. in 1942 and was also associated with the Evans Funeral Chapel.
Active as Mason and Rotarian, he was a  past president of both the Westside Shrine Club and the Patterson Rotary Club.
He was a member of the Patterson Masonic Lodge, Patterson Chapter #417 of the Order of Eastern Star, Scottish Rite
Bodies of Stockton, the Aahes Shrine Temple of Oakland, and the Turlock Golf and Country Club. He is survived by his
wife, Virginia of Patterson; a daughter, Vee Hooper of Patterson; a son, Stanley Davis of Turlock; two brothers, DeVere
Williams of Oakhurst and Wendal Williams of Fremont; and four grandchildren.

Cemetery for George Worded, 72, who died last Thursday in a local hospital.  Worden, a native of Nebraska, had lived
here 14 years.  He was a retired bookkeeper. Survivors include one brother and three sisters who live in the east.

Wright, 97, who died last Thursday in the local hospital.  Private burial was held at Patterson District Cemetery.
A native of Adelaide, Calif., Wright had lived in the Patterson area 60 years.  He was a retired rancher. He is survived by
a son, Jack Wright of Redwood City; a daughter, Bernice Fleharty of Red Bluff; one sister; 7 grandsons and a great-
grandchild. The family requests that any remembrances be made to the Women s Auxiliary of Del Puerto Hospital.

Services Friday For Louise Ybarra; Graveside services for 10-month old Louise Ybarra will be held at Patterson District
Cemetery Friday at 10 a.m.   The youngster, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Ybarra, died suddenly in a Modesto hospital
early July 31.  She had been taken to the hospital July 30 and a diagnosis of acute bronchitis was made.  An autopsy was
scheduled to determine the actual case of death.
