Thomas Allamon

Thomas Allamon, 88, of Beaver, died Thursday, July 22, 1999, in a Beckley 
hospital following a short illness.

Born Nov. 11, 1910, in Shamrock, Pa., he was the son of the late Alliances 
"Pete" Allamon and Annie Hanniford Allamon.

Mr. Allamon was a retired supervising federal mine inspector and a member of 
the Mount Hope Christian Church for more than 40 years.

He received a Hero's Award for his display of courage when rescuing four men 
after a gas explosion on Oct. 28, 1958, at the Burton Mine, Oglebay-Norton 
Co., Craigsville. After retiring from the U.S. Bureau of Mines, he taught 
mining classes at Beckley College.

He was a member of the Beallsville, Pa., Masonic Lodge No. 237. He was active 
in community and civic organizations, and he was an avid bowler, golfer and 
gardener.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Issac Allamon; and two sisters, Mariah 
Campbell and Sarah Bittinger.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Mildred C. (Duke) Allamon of Beaver; 
a son, Roy Edward Allamon of Clarksville, Pa.; five daughters, Mary Jane 
Mickshaw of Orlando, Fla., Nancy Smodic and her husband, William, of 
Wilmington, N.C., Donna Rae Cantley and her husband, Ronald, of Shady Spring, 
Sandra Honaker and her husband, William, of Covington, Va., and Cynthia 
Thomas and her husband, Charles, of Middletown, Md.; a brother, Lawrence 
Allamon of Uniontown, Pa.; two sisters, Mary Campbell of Uniontown, Pa., and 
Anna Mae Lilley of Clarion, Pa.; 16 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 
one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, with the 
Rev. Roy Seaux officiating and the Rev. Tim Allen assisting. Entombment will 
follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers: Thomas and Jeffery Allamon, Ronnie and 
Adam Cantley, Billy Honaker, Shannon Thomas, Bobby, Danny and Billy Smodic.

Edgar P. Arthur Jr.

Edgar P. Arthur Jr., 61, of Beckley, died Thursday, July 22, 1999, at his 
home following a short illness.

Born Oct. 30, 1937, in Prosperity, he was the son of the late Edgar Price Sr. 
and Mary Francis Edmonds Arthur.

Mr. Arthur was a heavy equipment operator who formerly worked for Pavex and 
G&L Coal Co.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and a resident of Prosperity all his life.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Mae Lyons Arthur; and a brother, 
Fred Arthur.

Survivors include a son, Jack Edward Arthur, and his wife, Sherri, of 
Beckley; a daughter, Patricia Linksweiler and her husband, Jerry, of Beckley; 
two sisters, Anita Buckland of Burlington, N.C., and Gail Bogar of Cleveland, 
Ohio; a brother, Bobby Arthur of Beckley; and two grandchildren, Matthew and 
Jenna Nicole.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, with the 
Rev. Randy Mann officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial 
Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Friends will serve as pallbearers.

Robert H. Gwinn

ALDERSON - Robert Hughes Gwinn, 82, died Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at a 
Fairlea care home following a short illness.

Born Nov. 12, 1916, in Alderson, he was the son of the late George E. and 
Minnie Hughes Gwinn.

Mr. Gwinn was a lifelong resident of Alderson. Following a career in 
building, plumbing and heating, he retired to his family homeplace on Wolf 
Creek, and he had been a member of the Trinity Methodist Church, Wolf Creek.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Addison R. Gwinn; two sisters, Shirley 
Gwinn Morgan and Pauline Gwinn Foster; a grandson, John David Loughhead; and 
a son-in-law, David Clifford Loughhead.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Pitzer Gwinn; two daughters, Judith Gwinn 
Loughhead of Buena Vista, Va., and Bobbie Jean Gwinn of Alderson; two 
sisters, Mabel Gwinn Pittenger of Alderson and Kathleen Gwinn Morgan of 
Covington, Va.; two grandsons, Robert Palmer Loughhead and his wife, Connie, 
of Natural Bridge Station, Va., and Jason Gwinn Loughhead of Buena Vista, 
Va.; several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, 
with the Rev. Clark Peloubet officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverview 
Cemetery, Creamery.

Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson.

In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be made to the charity or 
church of your choice.

Pallbearers will be Ed Thompson, Jack Thompson, Paul Thompson, Kent Morgan, 
Bill Painter, Howard Fleshman, Ray Spence and Dean Jarrell.

Robert R. McClung

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Robert R. McClung, 68, died Thursday, July 22, 1999, in a 
Knoxville hospital following a long illness.

Mr. McClung was a member of the Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church, Knoxville, 
and was a retired mechanical engineer.

Mr. McClung and his surviving spouse, Shirley, had resided in Knoxville since 
1980.

He retired in 1991 as senior vice president of John B. Long Co., and had been 
associated since 1957 with Mr. Long in West Virginia and Tennessee in a 
variety of engineering administrative and management capacities.

Survivors include seven children and stepchildren, Cynthia Lynn McClung of 
Hawaii, Katherine Angelique Settle of Manhattan, Kan., Katrina Delores 
McClung of Huntington, Deidre "Dee" L. Hendrick of Oak Hill, David Patrick 
Stinnett of Knoxville, Tenn., Mary Stinnett Patteson of Fairfax, Va., and Ann 
Marie Nichols of Denver, Colo.; and 12 grandchildren.

He held offices in the West Virginia Society of Professional Engineers and 
was a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers, Society of Mining 
Engineers/American Institute of Mining Engineers, and the West Virginia Coal 
Mining Institute.

Calling hours for family and friends will be 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, with funeral 
services to follow at 3 p.m., at the Mann Heritage Chapel of Rose Mortuary, 
6200 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, Tenn. Entombment will be in Sherwood Memorial 
Gardens Mausoleum, Alcoa Highway, Knoxville, Tenn. Services will be conducted 
by the Rev. Vernon Holstad, Cedar Springs Presbyterian pastor.

Olen C. Mills

Olen C. Mills, 80, of Daniels, died 4:15 p.m. Thursday, July 22, 1999, in a 
Beckley hospital following a long illness.

Born July 19, 1919, in Basin, he was the son of the late Earl Mills and 
Ruthie Shrewsbury Mills.

Mr. Mills was a retired miner and owner and operator of Mill's Barber Shop on 
Harper Road. He was a member of the UMWA and Little Country Church at Cool 
Ridge and had been a resident of Daniels and Beaver for 32 years.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, being recipient of the Purple 
Heart.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Eldridge and Earl Mills Jr.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 59 years, Ruby Mitchem Mills; three 
sons, Steward Olen Mills and his wife, Dianne, of Ghent, Frankie Freeman 
Mills Sr. and his wife, Ellen, of Ghent, and Mason W. Mills and his wife, 
Linda, of Shady Spring; a brother, Tracy Mills of Ghent; four sisters, Marie 
Akers of Eatonville, Wash., Mildred Hager of Edgewater, Fla., Gracie Bryce of 
Slidell, La., and Nina Harmon of Princeton; five grandchildren, Sherryl 
Tackett, Daniel Mills, Frankie Mills Jr., Rob Mills, and Tamara Grant; and 
six great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Rose and Quesenberry Shady Spring Chapel, 
with the Rev. Jeffery Meadows officiating. Burial will follow in Paris 
Shrewsbury Cemetery, Ghent.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Fannie D. Rogers

Fannie D. Rogers, 95, of 133 Hager St., Beckley, died Monday, July 19, 1999, 
at a Beckley hospital following a short illness.

Born Sept. 5, 1903, in Leesburg, N.C., she was the daughter of the late 
Josiah Williams and Patsy Jefferson Williams.

Mrs. Rogers was a homemaker and a member of the New Hope Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fletcher Rogers; two sons, Thomas 
and John Mitchell; two sisters, Myrtle Fullen and Mabel Phelps; and two 
brothers, Thomas and John Williams.

Survivors include a son, Robert Mitchell of Baltimore, Md.; a daughter, 
Jeanette Redfearn of Baltimore; a sister, Virgie Plummer of Detroit, Mich.; 
11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great grandchildren; and a 
host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at New Hope Baptist Church, Beckley, with the 
Revs. Jewell Ross and Ronald Dyer, and Elder Luther Hairston officiating. 
Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before the services Monday at the church.
