Mrs. Bessie V. Holt

Suffolk, Jan 5 - Mrs Bessie V. Holt, 55, widow of J.R. Holt, of Ivor, died 
Saturday night at 10:45 o'clock at Tidewater Memorial Hospital, Norfolk, after 
a long illness.

Surviving her are two daughters, Mrs. Guy Lowe, of Franklin, and Mrs. L.E. 
Powell, of Suffolk; four sons, Elijah and J.R. Holt, of Suffolk; Andrew J. 
Holt, of Norfolk and Shelton Holt, of Sedley; four sisters, Mrs. Charles 
Nelson and Mrs. Ruby Beamon of Suffolk; Mrs. Faris Stephenson and Mrs. 
Mitchell Mumford, of Burdette, four brothers, Alex Mumford, of Victoria; 
Moses and Moody Mumford, of Sedley and Carl Mumford, of Windsor; seven 
grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The body was taken to the funeral home of I.O. Hill & Co, and on Monday 
afternoon at 1:15 o'clock the funeral procession will leave the Hill Funeral 
Home for Corinth Friends Church, in which Mrs. Holt held a membership, for 
funeral services to be conducted at 2:30 o'clock by the Rev. James Rauch 
Stein.  Burial will be in the family cemetery on the old home place in 
Southampton County.

Mrs. Bessie V. Holt

Suffolk, Jan 6 - Funeral services for Mrs. Bessie V. Holt were conducted this 
afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at Corinth Friends Church, in Southampton County, by 
the Rev. James R. Stein, asisted by Miss Edith Raiford.  Miss Lunie Neave read 
the hymn, "Tell Mother I'll Be There," and the choir, accompanied by Miss Mary 
Raiford sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Sweet Bye and Bye."  A pall of 
pink roses and Ascension lillies covered the casket.  Burial was made in the 
family cemetery in Southampton County.

Active pallbearers were P.M. and E.D. Raiford, George W. West, E.P. Lowe, 
Charles E. Neave, Thurman Barnes, Burnley Raiford and John Stephenson.

Family records indicate she m. 20 Aug 1902, but the marriage is not recorded 
  in Virginia.
