HUBERT L. ELEY

Hubert L. Eley, son of Mrs. Alice V. Eley and the late L.J. Eley died at
his home in Courtland December 25, 1923, in the thirty-first year of his age,
after a lingering illness.

Hubert was an exceptionally bright and ambitious young man with high
ideals and of conscientious Christian character. At the early age of eleven
years he joined the Methodist Church here and was always faithful and loyal
to its precepts. At the age of sixteen he graduated from the Courtland High
School and the same year was made assistant cashier of the Peoples Bank here,
working in that capacity until 1914 when he took a position with the Virginia
National Bank of Petersburg.

In 1916 he was made Secretary and Treasurer of the Banking Trust and
Mortgage Company of Petersburg and most creditably filled this important
position of trust until 1918 when his health began to fall and he was obliged
to retire from active business life. He spent some time at Catawba
Sanatorium, Asheville, N.C. and at a sanatorium in Chicago but did not improve
in health so returned to his home here where he spent his last days.

Although practically confined to his room and bed for five years, he was
always bright and cheerful, thinking of others rather than himself.

His funeral, conducted by the local Masonic fraternity, took place December
26, before a large concourse of friends and relatives, interment being made in
Riverside Cemetery. The burial services were conducted at the grave by the
Pastor of the deceased, Rev. H.L. Weston, assisted by a former Pastor, Rev. W.A.
Burks of McKenney. A favorite hymn, "Haven of Rest" was sung by the Methodist
choir. The pallbearers were H.C. Edwards, E.S. Manry, C.W. Williams, Dr. E.F.
Reese, H.A. Gillette, O.M. Joyner, G.W. Reese and C.W. Davis. The grave was
covered with flowers, the last tribute of love and esteem of his lived ones and
friends.

He leaves to mourn their loss a mother, Mrs. Alice V. Eley and five sisters,
Misses Annie Eley, Letha Eley, Mrs. C.R. Everett of Statesville, Marie Eley and
Elizabeth Eley, besides a larger number of relatives and friends.
