Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Tuesday, August 29, 2000 
Robert Roosevelt Brown , 52, recently of the 900 block of Widgeon Road and
longtime resident of New York, went home to be with the Lord Aug. 25, 2000,
peacefully ending his year long battle with cancer.

Born on Aug. 5, 1948, in Norfolk, to Doris Patterson and the late Roosevelt
Brown, he grew up in Norfolk but spent his high school years in Swan Quarter,
N.C. Upon graduation, Robert returned to Norfolk and obtained employment at the
MacArthur Memorial. He later enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, married, and
fathered three daughters. In 1983 he relocated to New York where he was employed
at FDR Veterans Hospital in Montrose, N.Y., as an electrical engineer.

In the summer of 1994 Robert committed his life to Christ. He was a member of
the Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Beacon, N.Y. Upon his return to Norfolk, he
faithfully attended Calvary Revival Church. His transformation and testimony
were an encouragement to all who knew him. He constantly thanked the Lord for
His goodness and admonished others ``not to waste life but to live for God.''

He is survived by his daughters, Michele P. Brown of Richmond, Tamika D. Brown
of Norfolk and Dana Brown Williams and her husband, Shaun, of Virginia Beach;
two grandsons, Kevin T. Lee and Christopher A. Williams; his parents, Doris
Patterson Spencer and James Spencer; six sisters, Delores B. Clemons, Joyce B.
Linyear, Jennetta B. Spencer, all of Chesapeake, Judy S. Williams of New York,
Shelia S. Johnson of Norfolk, and Shelby S. Jones of Portsmouth; a brother, Earl
Lee Spencer of New York; his grandmother, Esther Patterson Smith of Chesapeake;
a devoted fiancee, Dawn McGuire of New York; and a host of aunts, uncles,
cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

A homegoing service will be conducted at noon Thursday at Calvary Revival
Church, 5833 Poplar Hall Drive, Norfolk, with Bishop B. Courtney McBath
officiating. Viewing will begin at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Hale Funeral Home.
Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 400
Woodspring Arch, Chesapeake.
