ABINGDON – Mrs. Phylis Elaine Baer, 54, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at
Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Baer was a native of Frederick, Md. She was a 1968 graduate of Frederick
High School. While living in Abingdon, she worked in the deli at Food Country
and took care of the elderly.

She was preceded in death by her parents, C. Upton and Betty Rice Brandenburg,
and one brother, Charles Franklin Brandenburg.

She is survived by one son, Mark and wife Sue Brandenburg of Knoxville; one
brother, Ernie Brandenburg and wife Shelia of Adamstown, Md.; grandchildren,
Travis Johnson and Ciji Johnson, and four nephews, E. Lee, Ryan, Christopher and
Joshua.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, from 5-9 p.m. at Farris
Funeral Service.

Mrs. Baer’s remains will be transferred to Keeny and Basford Funeral Home in
Frederick, where the family will receive friends Monday evening from 7-9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at 10 a.m. at Keeny and
Basford Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Stephen W. Humphrey will officiate. Interment
will follow in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.

COEBURN – Louise Brummett, 76, passed away Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at her home.

She is survived by her husband, Clyde Brummett; a son, Martin Luther and his
wife Kathy Brummett of Gastonia, N.C.; three daughters, Margaret Brummett Smith
of Coeburn, Sheila Brummett and her husband Fred McCarty of Coeburn and Freda
Brummett and her husband Buddy Sexton of St. Paul; a brother, Hershel Hyatt of
Norton; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Chapel, Coeburn, with the Rev. Robert Cantrell and Rev. Bruce Martin

Ronald David Carter

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Ronald David "Ronnie" Carter, age 68, went to be with the Lord,
Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at his home.

He was born March 17, 1935, in English, W.Va., a son of the late Richard "Dude"
and Mae Carter. He was raised in Bristol Tennessee but lived in Miami for 32
years before moving back to Bristol. He was an asbestos worker with 40 years of
service and member of the Asbestos Workers Local Union 60. He was of the Baptist
faith.

Survivors include wife of 39 years, Wanda Kent Carter; brother and sisters-in-
law, Eugene and Eva Mae Carter and Judy Kent Rust; nephews, Barry Lynn Carter
and David Allen Carter, and nieces, Pamela Jean Weber and Misty Hillman.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, in the
Weaver Funeral Home Chapel, with Minister Kenneth Littleford officiating. The
committal will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Shelby Hills Cemetery. Online condolences

Tanzy Clevinger

MAXIE, Va. – Tanzy Clevinger, 90 years of age, of the Belcher’s Fork section,
passed away Friday, Feb. 27, 2004, at the Buchanan General Hospital following an
extended illness.

Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Bud and Martha Church
Clevinger, He was a member of the Bull Creek Old Regular Baptist Church, a
retired coal miner and a member of the United Mine Workers of America, Local
Union 8288.

Mr. Clevinger is survived by his wife, Helen Virginia Hackney Clevinger, Maxie;
two stepsons, Melvina and wife Margaret Bishop of Mouthcard, Ky., and Bobby and
wife Mary Bishop of Maynardsville, Tenn.; one sister, Kelsie Vanover of Maxie,
and one brother, Jack and wife Loudella Clevinger of Abingdon. He is also
survived by eight grandchildren.

Mr. Clevinger was preceded in death by one daughter, Wilma Clevinger, and eight
brothers, Lando Clevinger, Turl Clevinger, Dee Clevinger, Arlin Clevinger,
Clarence Clevinger, Fleet Clevinger, Arnold Clevinger and Keithel Clevinger.

Funeral services for Tanzy Clevinger will be conducted Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at
1 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel, with Elders Howard Daniels, Jackie
Yates, Harold Ramey and Toy Looney officiating, with burial to follow in the
Clevinger Family Cemetery on Belchers Fork near Maxie.

Services will be held Saturday evening at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

GLADE SPRING – Mr. Charles Wiley Helton Sr., age 58, passed away Thursday, Feb.
26, 2004, in the Johnson City Medical Center.

He was a lifelong resident of Washington County and was employed with Emory &
Henry College for several years.

He attended the Glade Community First Church of God and the Maxwell First Church
of God and was preceded in death by his parents, James W. and Martha South
Helton Sr., and a brother, Roy Glenn Helton.

Survivors include his wife, Linda S. Helton, Glade Spring; a son, Charles Wiley
"Chuck" Helton Jr. and wife Carman, Glade Spring; a daughter, Tina Tolbert and
husband Shannon, Chilhowie; brothers, John Helton and James Helton, both of
Glade Spring; sisters, Irene Tuggle and Carrie Lamie, both of Glade Spring,
Margaret Harris, Emory, Va., and Sarah Helton, Glade Spring, and grandsons,

Thomas Johnston III

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Thomas P. Johnston III, 84, died Friday, Feb. 20, 2004, at
Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol.

Born in Richmond, he was educated in the public schools of Kingsport and Bristol
and graduated from Davidson College with degrees in chemistry and political
science. In 1941, he joined Tennessee Eastman Company as a chemist. He later
transferred to Chicago as a district sales manager and retired from Eastman
Chemical Products in Kingsport.

Mr. Johnston was an avid golfer and former member of the Senior Golf League of
Tri-Cities.

He was member of First Presbyterian Church of Bristol Tennessee.

His father, Rev. Dr. Thomas P. Johnston Jr., mother, Mary F. Johnston, and
sister, Hunter J. White, preceded him in death.

Surviving are his wife, Betty G. Johnston, Bristol; children, Annette Bowers,
Grand Rapids, Mich., Richard E. Johnston and wife Patricia, Cedar Rapids, Iowa,
and Thomas P. Johnston IV and wife Jane, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; stepchildren,
Beverly G. Baskett and husband Steve, Bristol Tennessee, Kenneth Glenn and wife
Shelia, Chilhowie, and Steven Glenn and wife Martha, DuBois, Wyo.;
grandchildren, Katie Johnston, Murfreesboro, Courtney Johnston, Cedar Rapids,
and Jessica Bowers, Grand Rapids; step-grandchildren, Cutler Glenn and Tanner

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Frances Louise "Punky" Leonard, age 70, of 330 Godsey Road,
Apartment 149, passed away Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, in the Wellmont Hospice
House.

She was born on May 31, 1933, in Bristol Virginia to the late Mr. and Mrs.
Francis and Gladys White Arnold. She had lived all her life in the Bristol area,
was retired from Reynolds Metals with 22 years of service and was a member of
the Full Gospel Tabernacle. Mrs. Leonard was preceded in death by her husband,
Billy Rex Leonard Sr.

Mrs. Leonard is survived by one daughter, Deanna "Okie" Chapman; two sons and
one daughter-in-law, Jimmy Arnold and Billy Rex Leonard Jr. and wife Linda;
eight sisters, Anna Mae Stout, Violet Knight, Linda Gallegos, Patsy Bowery,
Elaine "Laney" Leonard, Linda Carrier, Vickie Rhea and Debbie Tate; five
brothers, Clayton "Mike" Arnold, Spencer Arnold, Dean Arnold, Bobby White and
Billy White; five grandchildren, Melinda Leonard, Rex Aaron Leonard, Jennifer

HONAKER – Linda Sue Ball Lockhart, age 55, of the Big A Mountain section, passed
away Friday morning, Feb. 27, 2004, at her home.

Born Feb. 21, 1949, in Council, Va., she was a daughter of Major F. "June" Ball
Jr. and Arbutus Rasnake Ball of the Big A Mountain section of Honaker. A
lifelong resident of the area, she attended the Free Christian Church on Big A
Mountain. She had been employed as a registered nurse with Home Nursing Company
of Lebanon.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Weinthal Lockhart.

In addition to her parents, survivors include her beloved son and daughter-in-
law, David and Brandy Lockhart of Hurricane Creek, Va.; three sisters, Anna
Blankenship of Honaker and Barbara Rose and Rebecca Compton, both of Council,
two brothers, Jimmy Ball of Manassas, Va., and Kenneth Ball of Honaker; sisters-
in-law, Hazel Boyd, Reva Bedwell, Marla Jackson and Temple Gilbert; special
friend, Grayson Perkins; special comforters and encouragers, Cheryl Salyers and
Kay Barton, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Honaker Funeral Home
Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Carson Powers, Rev. Roy Lee Wilson and Rev. Robert
Tiller officiating. Interment will follow in the Frank Smith Cemetery on Big A
Mountain.

Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Special pallbearers will be Rick Breeding,
Roger Perkins, Martin Ratliff and Chris Stiltner.

CLINCHCO, Va. – Mary Ellen Lyall, age 74, passed away Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004,
at Heritage Hall in Clintwood.

Born in Dickenson County, she was a daughter of the late Jacob and Rilda Edwards
Wood. She was a homemaker and of the Primitive Baptist faith. In addition to her
parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Edna Ramey, Tilda Robinson
and Stella Fuller, five brothers, Fred, Stacy, Dewey, Granville and Lacy, and
one grandson, Jason Rose.

Survivors include her husband, Otis V. Lyall; three sons, Ron and (Rosemary)
Lyall, Scotland, Terry Lyall and Tommy and (Renee) Lyall, all of Clinchco; three
daughters, Cleta and (Paul) Gibson, Castlewood, Carian and (Jackie) Nowlin and
Cathy and (Paul) Rose, all of Clinchco; two brothers, Dorsey Wood, Abingdon, and
Junior Wood, Troy, Mich.; a brother-in-law, Earl Ramey, Haysi; a sister-in-law,
Eva Woods, Haysi; 11 grandchildren, Danny Lyall, Otis Ray Lyall, Darrell Barnes,
Alicia Fields, Bradley Barns, Brandon Nowlin, Tabitha Rose, Rachael Rose,
Gregory Rose, Katie Lyall and Trienton Lyall; eight great-grandchildren; five

BLUFF CITY – Elva Faye McGuire, age 52, went to be with the Lord, on Feb. 27,
2004, at her residence.

She was born a daughter to the late Wendell and Hazel Hodges Carr and had spent
all of her life in Sullivan County. She was a housewife and a member of Oakdale
Freewill Baptist Church. Mrs. McGuire was preceded in death by her brother,
James D. "Jim" Carr.

Survivors include husband of 37 years, Rev. Kenneth McGuire Sr.; children,
Kenneth McGuire Jr. of Bluff City, Karen McGuire of Bluff City and Kevin McGuire
and wife Chelle of Bluff City; grandchild, Maty McGuire; sister, Janice Norris;
several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

WISE – A.E. Smith, 74, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at his home.

He was born in Russell County, Va., son of the late Ed and Virgia Turner Smith.
He was a retired miner and a member of the U.M.W.A. He was preceded in death by
one son, Richard Smith.

He is survived by five daughters, Betty Burke of Castlewood, Virginia Bird of
Clifton, Va., Vickie Buckles of Bristol Tennessee, Lynn Elgart of Alpharetta,
Ga., and Mary Edwards of Coeburn; two sons, William "Buzz" Smith of Wise and
Alfred Smith of Norton; one sister, Alma Lee Bartee of Castlewood; 18
grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
