 SALTVILLE -- Amon Armp Fieldmore "Dick" Armstrong, 82, died Friday,
 Oct. 8 1999, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
 He was a retired employee of Rich Valley Elementary School and was the
 widow of Reba Gay Stevenson Armstrong.
 Surviving are a daughter, Darlene Johnson of Marion; three sons, David
 Armstrong of Radford, Va., and Jerl Armstrong and Michael Armstrong, both
 of Saltville; a sister, Margaret Evans of Saltville; 11 grandchildren; seven
 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
 Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. in D.R. Henderson
 Funeral Home Chapel in Saltville. The Rev. Paul Jones will officiate. Burial will
 be in Rich Valley Presbyterian Cemetery.
 Among survivors are a son-in-law, Ervin Johnson of Marion; three
 daughters-in-law, Merilyn Armstrong of Radford and Susie Armstrong and
 Betty Armstrong, both of Saltville; 11 grandchildren, Lisa Sarver, Monica
 Moran, Kim Blevins, Tracy Rhea, Brad Armstrong, Derek Armstrong,
 Shannon Armstrong, Chad Johnson, Ryan Armstrong, Charles Armstrong and
 Perry Armstrong.

 Naomi W. Bales

 CEDAR BLUFF -- Naomi V. White Bales, 83, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999,
 in a Bristol Virginia health care center.
 Mrs. Bales was born in Red Ash, Va., a daughter of the late Thomas W. and
 Nannie Mae Whited White, both Tazewell County natives. She lived most of
 her life in the Steelsburg area and was a member of New Hope Assembly
 Church in Claypool Hill, Va. She was the widow of Cecil Henry Bales.
 Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Clyde (Sharon) Griffith Jr. of Richlands; three
 sons, Jerry Bales, Larry Bales and Michael Bales, all of Bristol Tennessee;
 three sisters, Jean Longworth and Opal Coleman, both of Inverness, Fla., and
 Lorraine Bales of Cedar Bluff; two brothers, Bailey White of Avon Park, Fla.,
 and William White of Cedar Bluff; 10 grandchildren; and nine
 great-grandchildren.
 Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Hurst-Scott Funeral
 Chapel in Richlands. The Rev. Claudie Throgmartin will officiate. Entombment
 will be in Green Hills Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Claypool Hill, Va.
 Mrs. Bales was also preceded in death by a son, Cecil Henry Bales Jr.; four
 sisters, Dorothy Vance, Helen Lyons, June McCoy Lester and Joan Umbel;
 and a brother, Henry White.
 Pallbearers will be Michael Ray Bales, Michael Bales Jr., Kevin Bales, Brian
 Griffith, Jeffrey Bales and Gregory Osborne.

 Rhoda B. Brass

 FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Rhoda B. Brass, 82, formerly of Dickenson
 County, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, in Mary Washington Hospital in
 Fredericksburg.
 She was of the Baptist faith.
 Surviving are seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two
 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
 Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at noon in Clintwood Funeral
 Home Chapel. The Rev. Bill Kendrick will officiate. Burial will be in Phipps
 Memorial Cemetery in Clintwood.
 Among survivors is a daughter-in-law, Rita Viers of Fredericksburg.

 Ada T. Deel

 HAYSI -- Ada T. Deel, 73, of Route 2, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at her
 home.
 She was born in Floyd County, Ky., a daughter of the late James Lewis and
 Mary Josephine Robinson Tussey. She was the widow of Charlie W. Deel and
 a homemaker. She was a member of Paw Paw Old Regular Baptist Church.
 Surviving are two daughters, Sue Edwards of Naples, Fla., and Josephine
 Boyd of Prater, Va.; five sons, Curtis Deel, James Melvin Deel and Gary
 Lewis Deel, all of Haysi, and David Deel and Larry Michael Deel, both of
 Dalton, Ga.; a sister, Julie Belcher of English, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; and six
 great-grandchildren.
 Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Haysi Funeral Home
 Chapel. Elders David Oquinn, Jackie Yates and Frank Oquinn will officiate.
 Burial will be in C.W. Deel Cemetery, Route 2, Haysi.
 Mrs. Deel was also preceded in death by a son, Chucky Deel; a daughter,
 Donna May Deel; and a grandson, Gary Zane Edwards.

 SALTVILLE -- Allen Lewis Frye, 80, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, in
 Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
 He was a member of Madam Russell United Methodist Church, a 50-year
 member of William King Masonic Lodge 227, past patron of Saltville Chapter
 151 of OES, past grand patron of the Grand Chapter of Virginia OES and
 General Grand Chapter Committee appointment of OES. He was a member of
 Saltville-Rich Valley Lions Club, past district governor of the Lions Club and
 was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow Award.
 Surviving are his wife, Hazel Clear Frye; a brother, Marvin Frye of Pittsburgh,
 Pa.; three sisters, Louise Bridges of Morgantown, W.Va., Christine Grogg of
 San Diego and Charlotte Brinkley of Gray, Tenn.; and several nieces and
 nephews.
 Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Henderson Funeral
 Home. The Revs. Scott Robertson-Gouge and Jonathan Jonas will officiate.
 Burial will be in Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring, Va.

 Maxwell M. Hodge

 Maxwell M. "Whacker" Hodge, 64, of 600 Tennessee Ave., Bristol, Tenn.,
 died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, in the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical
 Center in Mountain Home, Tenn.
 He was a lifelong resident of Bristol Tennessee, a retired employee of Kinkead
 Machine Shop and a U.S. Marine veteran of the Korean War.
 Surviving are his wife, Myra "Dee" Hodge; a son, Maxwell M. "Mike" Hodge
 of Bluff City; six sisters, Barbara Grubbs of Blountville, Hattie Booher and
 Linda Humprhries, both of Bristol Tennessee, Jean Sage of Bristol Virginia,
 Mary Short of Wyndale, Va., and Wanda Gill of Kansas; a brother, George F.
 Hodge Jr. of Bristol Tennessee; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren;
 and several nieces and nephews.
 Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the graveside in
 Glenwood Cemetery by Weaver Funeral Home. The Rev. Jimmy Epperson
 will officiate.
 Mr. Hodge was preceded in death by a son, Richard Allen Hodge.

 Irene Huddle

 Irene Huddle, 83, of Bristol Nursing Home in Bristol Tennessee, formerly of
 737 Forest St., Kingsport, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, in Bristol Regional
 Medical Center.
 She was born in Atkins, Va., a daughter of the late Seymour T. and Mary
 Horne Atkins. She moved to Kingsport in 1947. She retired from Tennessee
 Eastman Corp. spinning department after 32 years of service. She was a
 member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church.
 Surviving are two daughters, Lavelle Alley of Bristol Tennessee and Linda
 Walker of Kingsport; a brother, Harlow Atkins of Marion; seven
 grandchildren, Mike Alley, Sharon Dowell, Dennis Alley, Melinda Thomas,
 Bob Walker, John Walker and Richard Walker; eight great-grandchildren,
 Matthew Alley, Lauren Alley, Sarah Dowell, Grace Dowell, Seth Alley,
 Shanna Alley, Shelley Thomas and Brody Thomas; and several nieces and
 nephews.
 Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Oak Hill Cemetery
 by Oak Hill Funeral Home in Kingsport. The Rev. Joel Campbell will officiate.
 Mrs. Huddle was also preceded in death by two sisters, Bessie Jennings and
 Mary Cress; and two brothers, Frank Atkins and Talmage Atkins.
 Among survivors are two sons-in-law, Lee Alley of Bristol Tennessee and Jim
 Walker of Kingsport; three granddaughters-in-law, Rosemary Allen, Angela
 Alley and Ellen Walker; and two grandsons-in-law, David Dowell and Jeff
 Thomas.

 Lola G. Layne

 OAKWOOD, VA. -- Lola Griffith Layne, 86, of the Dismal Route section,
 died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, in Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy.
 She was born in Pike County, Ky., a daughter of the late William Frank and
 Tilda Kinder Griffith. She was a resident of Pike County for several years and
 moved to Buchanan County in 1937. She was a member of Big Branch Church
 of Christ for 66 years, where she was a Sunday School teacher and active in
 other areas of the church. She and her husband owned and operated Clyde
 Layne General Merchandise Grocery Store for several years. She was a
 homemaker.
 Surviving are her husband of 68 years, Virgil Clyde Layne; two daughters,
 Ruby Jean L. Ratliff of Abingdon and Garnette Ann L. Stewart of Roanoke;
 two sons, Dallas Layne of Pikeville and Donald L. Layne of Oakwood; four
 sisters, Sophia G. Smith of Abingdon, Ruby G. Fletcher of Johnson City,
 Beatrice G. Keene of Mouth Card, Ky., and Shelby Jean G. Compton of
 Grundy; a brother, Leo Griffith of Grundy; seven grandchildren; and nine
 great-grandchildren.
 Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Grundy Funeral Home
 Chapel. Evangelists Clarence Greenleaf, Michael Trent, Mike Rife and Stanley
 Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Annie Young Cemetery.
 Mrs. Layne, a loving wife, mother and grandmother, was also preceded in
 death by a daughter, Shirley Layne; a sister, Piney Yates; and four brothers,
 Arlin, Ertle, Corbert and Elmo Griffith.
 Among survivors are a son-in-law, Frank Ratliff of Abingdon; a
 daughter-in-law, Shirley Layne of Oakwood; three brothers-in-law, Alvie
 Fletcher of Johnson City, Marcum Keene of Mouth Card and Blake Compton
 of Grundy; and a sister-in-law, Patty Griffith of Grundy.
 Pallbearers will be Jonathan Layne Ross, David Layne, Paul Layne, James
 Rasnake, Charles Edward Yates and Bill Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be
 men of Big Branch Church of Christ.

 Bertha P. Noonkester

 Bertha Posten Noonkester, 90, of Bristol Virginia, died Sunday, Oct. 10,
 1999, at her home.
 She was born in Saltville, a daughter of the late Rev. Lee and Hattie Worley
 Posten. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County and the widow of
 F.B. "Jack" Noonkester. She and her husband were former owners of Midway
 Builders (later known as Midway Wholesale) and donated the land for the
 Washington County Little League Field to the Goodson Kinderhook Lions
 Club, which is now known as the F.B. "Jack" Noonkester Little League Field.
 She was a member of State Street United Methodist Church.
 Surviving are a son, W.B. "Bill" Noonkester of Bristol; three sisters, Loretta
 Barker of Abingdon, Dana Larkey of Kingsport and Velma Parker of Mount
 Carmel, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.
 Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 4 p.m. in State Street United
 Methodist Church Chapel by Akard Funeral Home in Bristol, Tenn. The Rev.
 Fred Dearing will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
 Mrs. Noonkester was also preceded in death by a brother, Paul Posten of
 Bristol Tennessee; three sisters, Lakey Boardwine of Saltville, Nadine Doak of
 Abingdon and Revonda Netherland of Kingsport.

 ABINGDON -- James Lee Nunley, 30, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, from
 injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
 He was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Va., and a son of Freddie
 and Katherine Doss Nunley of Abingdon. He was employed by Summitt BSR
 Roofing, was of the Baptist faith and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.
 Surviving, besides his parents, are his wife, Nickie Sinclair Nunley; a daughter,
 Kuristian Nunley of the home; a son, Michael Harris of Marion; three sisters,
 Virginia Anderson of Abingdon, Tammy Begoli of Burlington, N.C., and
 Angela Blankenship of Crestline, Ohio; and maternal grandmother, Katherine
 Plummer of Abingdon.

 LEBANON -- Virginia Helen Robinson, 50, of the Dry Branch section, died

 She was born in Russell County, Va., and was a daughter of the late Samuel
 and Sally Sims Johnson. She had spent most of her life in Russell County and
 was a 1967 graduate of Lebanon High School. She was of the Holiness faith
 and a member of Lebanon Church of Jesus Christ.
 Surviving are her husband, Anthony Robinson; two daughters, Renee
 Reynolds-Gay of Houston and Crystal Reynolds Browning of Lebanon; four
 sisters, Brenda Wallace of Honaker and Bertha Cox of Vero Beach, Fla.,
 Roberta Fields of Hickory, N.C., and Sandra McGuire of Havre de Grace,
 Md.; two brothers, Freddie Hafley of Belfast, Va., and Eugene McGuire of
 Havre de Grace; two grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

 APPALACHIA -- Leora Cress Bentley, 97, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at
 her home.
 She was the widow of Benjamin H. Bentley Sr. and a lifelong member of
 Appalachia United Methodist Church. She was the oldest member of the
 Appalachian Chapter 26 Order of the Eastern Star.
 Surviving are a daughter, June B. Becraft of Gaithersburg, Md.; three sons,
 Ben H. Bentley Jr. of Charlotte, N.C., Dr. Jack K. Bentley of Richmond and
 Bruce E. Bentley of Bristol Virginia; a stepson, James Bentley of Kingsport; a
 brother, George Cress of Venice, Fla.; a sister, Nora Davis of Montgomery,
 Ohio; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and
 nephews.
 Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 8 p.m. in Roy A. Green
 Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. David Gilbert will officiate. Graveside
 services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in Glencoe Cemetery in Big Stone Gap.

 Earl Bentley and Golda Wade Bentley. She was a member of Powell Valley
 Presbyterian Church.
 Surviving are a sister, Amanda Kay Lewis of Big Stone Gap; a brother, Earl R.

 MENDOTA -- Max M. Gillenwater, 70, of 6040 Kilgore Drive, died

 He was a lifelong resident of Mendota, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II
 and a gunsmith.
 Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Helen D. Gillenwater; a daughter, Mae
 Gillenwater of Bristol Virginia; a son, Guy Stephen Gillenwater of Mendota;
 two sisters, Mildred Osborne and Audrey Hobbs, both of Bristol Virginia;
 three granddaughters; a niece; and two nephews.

 SALTVILLE -- Radford Giles Gillenwater, 76, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999,
 at his home.
 He was born in Saltville, a son of the late Blair Gillenwater and Mae Little. He
 moved to Glade Spring in 1934 and returned to Saltville in 1965. He was a
 U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II and a former employee of The Vance
 Co., Saltville Police Department and National Life Insurance Co. He was of
 the Presbyterian faith.
 Surviving are his wife, Mary Lester Gillenwater; a son, Stephen Douglas
 Gillenwater of Hendersonville, Tenn.; two granddaughters, Stephanie
 Gillenwater and Lori Gillenwater, both of Hendersonville.
 A memorial service will be conducted Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Midway Chapel,

 LEBANON -- A.K. "Doc" Gilmer Jr., 87, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, in
 Johnston Memorial Hospital.
 He was a lifelong resident of Russell County and a member of Lebanon
 Memorial United Methodist Church, where he was a Sunday School teacher
 for more than 27 years and served on many committees. He was the widower
 of Katherine Stanley Gilmer and a 1933 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic
 Institute with a degree in animal science. He was a farmer, real estate broker
 and former owner and operator of Tazewell and Abingdon Livestock Markets.
 He was a member of Southwest and Russell County Historical Societies.
 Surviving are two daughters, Betty Gilmer and Cornelia Estep, both of
 Lebanon; a son, A.K. Gilmer III of Lebanon; and two granddaughters, Amy
 K. Gilmer and Lindsey M. Gilmer.

 H. Carmack Carrier of Bristol Tennessee died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999.
 He was born in Sullivan County, a son of the late Robert Hugh Carrier and
 Bessie Offield Carrier.
 He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and a contractor and
 businessman. He built homes in numerous subdivisions and also built a number
 of commercial buildings. He was a charter member of Edgemont Presbyterian
 Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher.
 Surviving are his wife, June Burkholder Carrier; a brother, Larry Carrier; a
 niece, Carolyn Carrier Boose; three nephews, Larry Carrier Jr., Mark Carrier
 and Andy Carrier; a great-niece; and two great-nephews.

 1972 from Maryland, was a retired coal miner, a U.S. Army veteran and was

 the late Emmett Pannell. He was a retired manager from the deli and bakery of
 Food Lion Stores in Florida and was of the Baptist faith.

 member of Grundy Church of Christ and a homemaker. She was the widow of
 Ira H. Blankenship.

 Oakwood, Va., and Dennis Brian Blankenship of Lebanon; and a

 terms as Sullivan County Commissioner.
 He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and a contractor and
 businessman. He built homes in numerous subdivisions and also built a number
 of commercial buildings. He was a charter member of Edgemont Presbyterian
 Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher.
 Surviving are his wife, June Burkholder Carrier; a brother, Larry Carrier; a
 niece, Carolyn Carrier Boose; three nephews, Larry Carrier Jr., Mark Carrier
 and Andy Carrier; a great-niece and two great-nephews.

 Jack Lambert, 64, of 401 Tilley Drive, Bristol, Va., died Wednesday, Oct. 13,
 1999, at his home.
 He was born in Buchanan County, a son of the late Roosevelt and Fannie
 Lambert. He received his masters of education degree from East Tennessee
 State University and was a retired teacher and principal of Washington County,
 Va., School System. He was a member of Windsor Avenue Presbyterian
 Church, where he served as an elder.
 Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Lambert; three sons, Steffen Lambert, Denny
 Lambert and Chris Lambert, all of Bristol Virginia; and two granddaughters.
 Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 8 p.m. in Weaver Funeral
 Home Chapel. The Revs. Gradys Parsons and Davis Whitesides will officiate.
 Graveside services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in Glenwood Mausoleum Chapel
 with entombment in Glenwood Mausoleum.
 Mr. Lambert enjoyed operating some rental property in the Bristol area.

 She had been a waitress since 1957, retiring in 1990. She was the widow of
 Burns P. Mullins.
 Surviving are two sons, Gene Mullins and Richard Mullins, both of Wilmington,
 Del; a daughter, Judy Scott of Bear, Del.; a brother, Lowell Beverly of
 Kingsport; a sister, Beaulah Rose of Clintwood; five grandchildren; and a
 great-grandson.
 Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. in Valley View Freewill
 Baptist Church by Clintwood Funeral Home. The body will be taken to the

 Mrs. Mullins, a loving mother, is also survived by five grandchildren, Bret

 KINGSPORT -- Gerald W. Peters, 57, of the Rock Springs community, died

 He was born in Johnson City, a son of Mary K. Cox of Kingsport and the late
 Ivera D. Peters. He was a 1962 graduate of Dobyns Bennett High School,
 where he played on the 1959-60 state champion football team. He retired in
 1994 from Tennessee Eastman Co.

 J. Peters of Spring Hill, Fla.; a half-brother, Ronald Peters of Johnson City;

 Smalling and Laura South. She retired from L.C. King Manufacturing and was
 a member of Friendship Freewill Baptist Church.

 Tennessee; two sisters, Nina Crowell of Bristol Tennessee and Edina Denton
 of Bristol Virginia; a brother, Preston South of Blountville; a granddaughter;

 She was a retired cashier of the old Cumberland Bank and Trust Co., the
 originator of the "Teen Canteen" for youth in the 1950s and a member of
 Pauline Page Circle and Billy Rader Home Demonstration Club. She was past
 worthy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star and the last surviving member
 of the "All Women Council" for the Town of Clintwood as listed in British
 media as the "Petticoat Government."
 Surviving are her husband, Ayers P. Shortt; four daughters, Sue Thomason of
 Clinchco, Va., Rebecca Hughes of Pound, Bethel Steele of Ladson, S.C., and
 Mitzie Arnold of Laguna, Mexico; a brother, Frank Clay of Coeburn; five
 granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren.

 member of Border City Chapter 162 Order of the Eastern Star, where she was
 a past matron serving in 1949. She was a member of Aldersgate United
 Methodist Church and the widow of Samuel Edward Stephenson Sr.

 and George Clarence Stephenson of Sperryville, Va.; six grandchildren; and 10

 Mrs. Musick, 105, of the Weavers Creek community, died Wednesday, Oct.
 13, 1999, in Russell County Medical Center.
 Surviving are three daughters, Naomi Kiser and Edith Artrip, both of
 Cleveland, Va., and Retha Linkenhoker of Roanoke; three sons, Robert
 Musick and Denver Musick, both of Lebanon, and Lawrence Musick of
 Narrows, Va.; 23 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; eight
 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
 Pallbearers will be Timmy Dotson, Shine Dotson, Joe Dotson, Frankie Smith,
 Ira Smith, David Clint Musick, Doug Artrip and Johnny Skeen.

 Felix L. Odle

 FOLEY, Ala. -- Felix Leon Odle, 78, formerly of Coeburn, died Wednesday,
 Oct. 13, 1999, at his home.
 He was a son of the late Robert Lee and Norma Jean Carico Odle and a
 retired engineer.
 Surviving are his wife, Ann M. Odle, two sons, Robert Leonard Odle of Tulsa,
 Okla., and Lawrence Allen Odle of the Bahamas; a daughter, Mary C. Blanton
 of Ellenboro, N.C.; six grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.
 Graveside services will be conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. in Greenwood
 Memorial Gardens by Estes Funeral Home in Coeburn. The Rev. Curt Bond
 will officiate.
 Mr. Odle was also preceded in death by a son, Michael Joseph Odle.

 CLAYPOOL HILL, Va. -- Judith Stamper Adkins Rife, 55, died Thursday,
 Oct. 14, 1999.
 She was born in Kentucky, a daughter of Allene Clark Stamper of Mantua,
 Ohio, and the late Arlie Stamper. She was the widow of Ronald Adkins and
 Adm. Dewey Rife Jr.
 Surviving, besides her mother, are a son, Ronald Adkins of Raleigh, N.C.: two
 daughters, Rhonda Nelson of Wardell, Va., and Michelle Rife of Leesburg,
 Va.; two sisters, Pat Houck and Barbara Edwards, both of Mantua; a brother,
 Arlie "Rocky" Stamper III of Mantua; and seven grandchildren.
 Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in Singleton Funeral
 Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff. The Rev. Terry Johnson will officiate.
 Entombment will be in Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Claypool
 Hill.
 Mrs. Rife was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Andrea Nelson.
 She was an avid bowler.

 Mrs. Rouse, 69, of 433 Sharps Creek Road, Bristol, Tenn., died Tuesday,

 CLINTWOOD -- Funeral services for Marion Clay Shortt will be conducted
 Friday at 11 a.m. in Clintwood Baptist Church. The Revs. Bill Kendrick and

 before services. Burial will be in Phipps Memorial Cemetery in Clintwood.
 Mrs. Shortt, 80, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, in Holston Valley Hospital and

 MARION -- Nora Lee Glovier Snead, 82, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at

 She was a member of First United Methodist Church and was a retired
 registered nurse.

 of Rockport, Texas; a granddaughter, Lisa Snead of Houston; and a
 great-granddaughter, Catherine Kluge of Houston.

 Diane Spritzer

 DELRAY BEACH, Fla. -- Diane Spritzer, 87, died Wednesday, Oct. 13,
 1999, in Delray Medical Center.
 She was born in New York City, retired with her husband to Delray Beach in
 1979 after a 21-year career as owner of a retail business and seven years with
 the New York City Health Services Administration.
 She was active in numerous community and civic organizations.
 Surviving are her husband, Philip Spritzer; a daughter, Barbara Firestone of
 Absecon, N.J.; a son, Allan D. Spritzer of Johnson City; a sister, Lillian Sinen
 of Pompano Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

 NORTON -- Reeves Stidham, 70, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, as a
 result of injuries sustained in an accident.
 He was a lifelong resident of the Wise County area and the widower of Maxine
 Napier Stidham.
 Surviving are four sisters, Wanda "Tootsie" Rich of Big Stone Gap, Anna Lee
 Hale and Lois Stidham, both of Norton, and Thelma Collins of Appalachia;
 two brothers, Robert Stidham of Big Stone Gap and Ralph Eugene Stidham of
 Marina, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
 Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 8 p.m. in Hagy Funeral Home
 Chapel. The Revs. John McFalls and Lester Sturgill will officiate. Graveside
 services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Laurel Grove Cemetery.
 Mr. Stidham is also survived by a special friend, Dorothy Howington of

 Sharon A. Sykes

 HONAKER -- Sharon Ann Sykes, 40, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, in
 Russell County Medical Center in Lebanon.
 She was born in Tazewell County, Va., a daughter of Louise Tolliver of Cedar
 Bluff and the late Avery Tolliver. She had lived in the Honaker area for the past
 17 years, was 1977 graduate of Richlands High School and a graduate of
 Southwest Virginia Community College. She was a licensed practical nurse.
 Surviving, besides her mother, are her husband, Douglas W. Sykes Sr.; a
 daughter, Kierra Lyndsey Sykes of the home; a stepdaughter, Angela Sykes
 Quales of Bristol Virginia; a stepson, Douglas W. Sykes Jr. of Honaker; a
 sister, Bobbie Cassell of Cedar Bluff; a brother, Stephen A. Tolliver of St.
 Paul; two step-grandchildren, Richard Quales Jr. and Maranda Quales.
 Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in Honaker Funeral
 Home Chapel. The Revs. Clyde Lambert and Mike Ryan will officiate. Burial
 will be in Tunnel Hill Cemetery in Honaker.
 Among survivors are several aunts.

 Flossie T. Turyn

 CLAYPOOL HILL, Va. -- Flossie Tomblin Turyn, 77, died Wednesday, Oct.
 13, 1999, in a Lebanon hospital. She was born in Logan County, W.Va., a
 daughter of the late Alexander and Mae Blair Tomblin, both Logan County
 natives. She was a member of Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Richlands.
 Surviving are her husband of 58 years, John Turyn Jr.; and a son, John Turyn
 III of Denver.
 A Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in Singleton Funeral Service
 Chapel in Cedar Bluff. Father Tom Collins will officiate. Entombment will be in
 Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill, Va.
 Mrs. Turyn was also preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Browning and
 Eunice Adams; a brother, Eugene Jennings Tomblin.
 Among survivors are three brothers-in-law, Frank Turyn of Paintlick, Va.,
 Victor Turyn of Ellicott, Md., and Tony Turyn of Lady Lake, Fla; a
 sister-in-law, Mrs. Frances Maynard of Delbarton, W.Va.

 MARION -- Grant William Widener, 67, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at
 his home.
 He was a son of the late Dewey and Nell Widener, a member of Lighthouse
 Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran.
 Surviving are his wife, Betty Barker Widener; a daughter, Patricia Norris of
 Marion; six sons, William Grant Jr. of Cockeysville, Md., Dennis Widener of
 Parkton, Md., Samuel Widener of Saltville, Phillip Widener of Hyde Park,
 Mass., and James Widener and Mark Widener, both of Marion; three sisters,
 Ernestine Sether and Charlotte Floyd, both of Gainesville, Fla., Aline Alban of
 Anchorage, Alaska; five brothers, Dewey Widener of Pennsylvania, Francis
 Widener of Delaware, James Widener and Ernest Widener, both of
 Congowingo, Md., and Freddie Widener of New Jersey; 18 grandchildren;
 and six great-grandchildren.

 Mr. Willis, 83, of 321 Johnson Hollow Road, died Wednesday, Oct 13, 1999,
 in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
 He was born in Holston, Va., and lived in the Blountville area most of his life.
 He was a retired employee of Sperry Co. and a member of Blountville
 Christian Church.
 Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Mary E. Willis; a daughter, Florence Moore
 of Blountville; a son, Gene Willis of Bristol Tennessee; a brother, Roy Willis of
 Blountville; three grandchildren; two foster grandchildren; two
 step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
 Mr. Willis was an avid fisherman.
 Among survivors are an uncle, J.H. Gillie of Bonita, Calif.; three grandchildren,
 Mitch Moore, Karen Rhymer and Kathy Johnston; two foster grandchildren,
 Jason Wright and Gary Wright; and two step-grandchildrenm Nikki Milhorn
 and Jody Milhorn.

 Smith and Butch Rhymer. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. John Green, Dr.
