Anton, Basil Steven
Basil Steven Anton 1917 ~ 2004 Basil Steven Anton (age 87) passed away
Tuesday, October 12, 2004, after struggling with declining health over the
past few years. Though his powerful lungs finally gave out at the end, he had
put them to good use throughout his long life most notably as an athlete, an
actor and a singer. As a young man, Basil was a gifted athlete. On both
baseball fields and basketball courts, he led many teams to victory throughout
his high school and college years, advancing in both sports to the
professional level. After serving in the Navy during World War II, Basil put
his sports career behind him to help support a family and raise two sons with
his loving wife, Mary. Though retired from athletic fields, Basil's commanding
physique found expression on the stage when he was selected to play the
executioner in a University of Utah production of Salome. He went on to play
many far less fearsome roles when it was discovered that he was blessed not
only with an imposing body, but also with artful, comedic timing. While a man
of many gifts, his greatest may have been his deep, rich, bass voice. He used
it not only as an actor, but also as a singer in musical productions, in
country-western bands, in the Jay Welch Chorale, and in both the Holy Trinity
and Prophet Elias choirs as a longstanding member of the Greek Orthodox
Church. He also sang at home surrounded by his loving family, who remember
most fondly his powerful and soulful rendition of Ol' Man River. Basil is
predeceased by his parents, Steven and Katherine Anton, and by his son, John
Anton, who passed away one year ago. Basil is survived by his wife of 58
years, Mary K. Anton; son, Basil (Susan) Anton; daughter-in-law, Nikki Anton;
sister, Anne Spanos; granddaughter, Christine (Mike) Polley; grandson, Steven
Anton (Lauren Schembari); great-granddaughter, Rebecca Polley; and cousin,
Ernest (Barbara) Kaddis. He is also survived by many in-laws, nieces, nephews
and friends, who gathered by his side and offered tremendous support in the
last leg of his journey. A viewing will be held Friday, Oct 15, 2004, 6 - 8
p.m., with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., Wasatch Lawn Mortuary Chapel, 3401
S. Highland Dr. The funeral will be Saturday, Oct 16, 2004, 1 p.m., Prophet
Elias Church, 5335 Highland Drive. Interment, Mount Olivet Cemetery. Following
interment the family will host a memorial luncheon at Prophet Elias. In lieu
of flowers, donations may be made in Basil's memory to Holy Trinity
Restoration Fund, 279 S. 300 W. SLC, Utah 84101, or to the Prophet Elias Choir
Fund, 5335 Highland Drive, SLC, Utah 84117.

Scherzinger, Narvel Joseph
Narvel Joseph Scherzinger "Together Again With His Cherished Love" Narvel
Joseph Scherzinger, loving husband, father, grandfather, great- grandfather,
great-great-grand-father, brother, uncle and friend passed away at home
surrounded by his family on Saturday, October 9, 2004. He was born January 20,

Lanore while serving in the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC's). His greatest
pleasure was Lanore and was broken hearted not being with her after she passed
away April 28, 2003. Dad lovingly took care of Mom for many years during her
health problems and wanted to make sure he was always there to take care of
her so no one else needed to. He said, "I don't know why she married me, I'm
the luckiest man in the world to have had such a wonderful wife." "My life is
like a fairy tale, if I hadn't lived it myself I wouldn't have believed it."
Narvel attended school in Louisville and joined the CCC's serving in Wyoming,
California, and Nevada for 42 months. His greatest accomplishment in the CCC's
was being the 1st Sergeant. "I thought I was the best d-m sergeant they had
and I was proud of my service in the conservation." He took 2nd place in the
District middleweight boxing championship of the CCC's. Upon returning to
Louisville after the CCCs he worked at a variety of jobs, the last being with
C.T. Dearing Printing Company the Louisville Newspaper, where he worked as the

in the position of Secretary/Treasurer. Narvel was an active member of The

Branch Sunday School Teacher and later as the Branch President. He served in
the Salt Lake Liberty Stake, 3rd Ward in the positions of Teachers Quorum
Adviser, Sunday School Teacher, Aaronic Priesthood Secretary, Ward Clerk,
First counselor in the Bishopric, and the Bishop. The familiar statement was
"Once a 3rd Warder, Always a 3rd Warder." He later served as Liberty Stake
High Council, 2nd Counselor in the Stake Presidency, and Stake President.
Other positions he held in the church were as the Regional Welfare
Representative, President and Counselor of the Jail Branch in Salt Lake, and

receiving an award for his 55 years of service to the scouting program August
2004, the Silver Beaver Award, serving as Scouting District Chairman,
attending Wood Badge in Shavers Lake, California (this was one of his very
proud moments). While at Wood Badge he saw the first satellite while lying on
the beach at Shavers Lake. He attended Philmont as a Boy Scout leader. He
enjoyed participating in 14 years of taking boy scouts on the Snake River
Canoe Trips in Wyoming. He had many wonderful and exciting stories to tell
about his adventures on the river. He was one of the first two representatives
from Utah to participate in the United States Delegation on Scouting to go to
Russia, and was the Boy Scouts District Chair on Scouting for Food from the
time it started until 2002. He received numerous awards for his volunteer
work. He was in charge of organizing the volunteers through The Church of

Walker, Aileen Worthen
Aileen Worthen Walker 1920 ~ 2004 Early on the morning of 12 Oct. 2004 Aileen
Worthen Walker, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother,
quietly slipped away from her mortal life into a better place filled with
welcoming loved ones. Born 17 Jan. 1920 to Vernon and Lorna Perkins Worthen in
Glenwood, Utah, she was the first of four children. After but one year away,
her family soon moved back to St. George where her father taught school for 41
years and she spent the rest of her childhood through her young womanhood. She
attended Dixie Junior College and later graduated from Brigham Young
University. She was to take further courses from BYU and USU for enjoyment and
to re-certify. Aileen began teaching school in Rockville, Utah. As they only
hired single female teachers back then she had to get permission from the
school superintendent to get married. He agreed if she would finish the year.
She married J. LeRoy Walker 25 Dec. 1941 in St. George. She stayed in
Rockville and he returned to construction work in the Ogden/Hill Field Air
Base area. This union was solemnized 19 May 1942 in the St. George Temple and
would last 74 days short of a 63rd anniversary in mortality - with an eternity
to come. Music was always a vital part of her life. Whether when accompanying
her father as he sang, playing xylophone solos, piano in dance bands, drums
and tympani in college bands, listening to musical favorites, attending opera
productions, or just engaging in family sing-a-longs in cars or at home, music
truly enriched and flavored her days. She taught school for several years in
Logan, UT and Japan. She is remembered also for her years of volunteer service
as an officer in the PTA, the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, and the Orem
Women's Club. For most of her lifetime she served in special callings for The
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in a number of locations in the
U.S., in Japan, France, and Germany. Leaving children and grandchildren was
difficult, but she filled an 18-month full time mission with her husband in
Western Australia in 1987-88. Aileen was preceded in death by her sister,
Nevada, and a brother, Robert Verne, neither of whom lived to their third
birthday; by her parents, a daughter, Toni Walker, and a grandson, Mike
Walker. She is survived by her husband, Roy of Orem, UT; two sons, Jae L.
Walker (Kathleen) of Glendora, CA and Larry Walker (Vickie) of Blue Ridge, TX;
daughters Leslie Tomlinson (Ian) of Las Vegas, NV; Lynne Newton (Charles) of
South Jordan, UT; Jerri Sume (Gary) of West Jordan, UT and a brother, Vern
Worthen (LuDean) of Draper, UT. Her posterity now numbers 16 granddaughters,
16 grandsons, 28 great-grandchildren and six more expected by spring. This
special lady will be best remembered for a lifetime filled with enthusiasm for
learning -- about wildlife, places, and cultures; her great joy being with
family, extended family and her many friends, and especially her outstanding
example of lifelong service to all. Funeral services will be held Saturday, 16
Oct at 11:00 a.m. at the Orem, Utah Sharon Stake Center located at 545 South
800 East. There will be a viewing from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, 15 Oct at the
Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 East 800 North in Orem and prior to the
services from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the Stake Center. Burial will be in the

E. Geraldine West 6/21/1932 ~ 10/7/2004 Beloved wife, mother, grandmother,
great-grandmother, neighbor and friend, Geraldine West, who blessed the lives
of everyone whom she knew, passed away in her home in Arlington Heights,
Illinois on October 7, 2004. Geraldine was born to Searen Hansen and Evelean
Coburn on June 21, 1932 in Preston, Idaho. She married her sweetheart, Owen D.
West, Jr. on December 23, 1953 in the Idaho Falls temple. They recently
celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Stalwart and true to the teachings
of the Savior, Geraldine served her family and fellowman all the days of her
mortal life. A faithful wife and dedicated, loving and devoted mother, she
unselfishly encouraged, supported and worked to help fulfill her family's
hopes and dreams. Geraldine was a registered nurse, specializing in coronary
and intensive care units. She also utilized these skills teaching first aid,
CPR and nutrition within the community. She touched many lives as a member of
the speaker's bureau for the American Red Cross, Chicago Heart Association and
the American Cancer Society. She was active with the Boy Scouts of America,
serving as an executive board member and received the Silver Beaver and Wood
Badge Awards. Geraldine served generously in the various auxiliaries of The
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in presidencies of Relief Society,
Young Women's and Primary at both the ward and stake levels. She enriched the
minds of youth as she inspired them to strengthen their own testimonies during
early morning seminary. Geraldine supported her husband as he served as
Bishop, Stake President, and then served full time at his side as he was
called to preside over the Utah Ogden Mission from 1991 to 1994. Upon their
return, they were immediately called to serve in the Chicago Illinois Temple
presidency until 1997. They continued their service by traveling the North
America Central Area as the Family History Advisors until 2002. Recently,
Geraldine has served as Owen's primary caregiver since he was diagnosed with
Primary Cardiac Amyloidosis, a rare bone marrow disorder. Geraldine's home
was a refuge, a piece of heaven on earth, created through great love and
selfless service. She loved life and learning. She was noble in her motherhood
and found joy in womanly arts of homemaking. Her motto was, "If it's worth
doing, it's worth doing well." She made everything beautiful, accomplishing
every undertaking with a flair. Geraldine was an artist in every sense of the
word. She was an elegant, refined woman of faith. She epitomized the Relief
Society's motto, "Charity Never Faileth." She was no stranger to hard work. A
tireless angel, she crocheted leper bandages and wrote notes of encouragement
to literally thousands. It seemed as though she could do everything and she
did! She cooked, she sewed, she canned, she painted, she was a beautiful
calligrapher. She was a poet, she had a green thumb she could make anything
grow. She was a gourmet cook who loved to share delicious meals with those in
need. She extended her knowledge to the community as she taught canning,
emergency preparedness, dehydrating food, first aid, and CPR training.
Geraldine is survived by her husband, Owen D. West, Jr, her children Owen D.
(Doreen) West, III of Arlington Heights, IL; Celestia Anne (Doug) Himstreet of

her in our hearts and honor her by living the teachings of the gospel of Jesus
Christ.
