Vinson. He was one of eight children and grew up in Sherwood, where he
had the fondest of memories. He finished high school in Rankin.

During World War II, he served with the Marines in the islands of the
South Pacific. His primary service was defending the air field in
   Okinawa.

After the war, he attended San Angelo College, Tulsa University and
graduated from the University of Texas with a bachelors degree in
geology. During his college days he met and married Louise Rowan of

member of many organizations including Dee Ora Masonic Lodge, Game

and events led him to many lifelong friendships that continued to be
dear to his heart up to his last moments. Scotts sweet and giving
spirit contributed to his largest role in life as a true champion to
   his family and friends.

He fulfilled this role by encouraging everyone to enjoy life as much
as he did. Some of his favorite pastimes were hunting with his dogs,

Obituaries

                           GRACE McCLATCHY NEWMAN

Grace McClatchy Newman, our beloved Mam-ma, was called home to her
Lord on Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at her daughters home in Austin,
surrounded by her family. She was 95 years young.

A longtime San Angelo resident, Grace was born in Brown County near
Trickham on Jan. 3, 1906, to Homer and Mary Frances McClatchy. She
married Frank Newman on the McClatchy ranch in Schleicher County on
Jan. 23, 1927. They first moved to San Angelo in 1946, and after
ranching in Alpine and Marfa, returned to San Angelo in 1951, where
she had lived since. Grace was preceded in death by her husband,
Frank; her son, Gene; her daughter; Wanda; and all of her siblings
brothers, Dwight, Cecil, and Jack McClatchy, and sister, Mabel
   Younger.

After her marriage, Grace and Frank worked on ranches in Texas and New
Mexico, eventually leasing ranchland in Schleicher and Pecos counties.
They were later in business with son, Gene, in the Newman Feed Mill,
and for a short time, a livestock auction company. Grace enjoyed ranch
life, but moved to town when her youngest daughter started school. She
was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church for more than 50 years and
was active in worship until health prevented her attendance. She was
an avid Dallas Cowboys fan, loved playing dominoes, fishing, growing
flowers and working in her yard. Her grandchildren,
great-grandchildren, and her many wonderful, lifetime friends were a
source of great pride and pleasure.

She is survived by her daughter, Frances Highsmith and husband, Jim,
of Austin; her nine grandchildren, Nancy Newman, Johnny Newman and
wife, Pam, and Suzy Watson and husband, Jimmy, all of San Angelo,
Carolyn Morgan and husband, Buddy, of Kemp, Michael Whitwell and wife,
Jamie, of Cotulla, Michelle Pokorny and husband, David, of St. Louis,
Mo., Kelly Green and wife, Rebecca, of Pflugerville, Jeff Green and
   wife, Robyn, of Frisco, and Mike Highsmith and wife, Valerie, of Buda;
and her five great-grandchildren, Jesse Newman of San Angelo, Morgan
and Ryan Whitwell of Cotulla, Sophia Green of Pflugerville, Clayton
Pokorny of St. Louis, and Devin Highsmith of Buda.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 14, at the Immanuel
Baptist Church with Dr. Byron Orand officiating. Interment will follow
   in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be the grandsons and honorary pallbearers will be the
   grandsons-in-law.

Special thanks to all her wonderful friends who sent cards and
flowers, and who called or visited while she was ill in Austin. She
loved you dearly, and your loving thoughts and prayers were of great
   comfort to her.

The family requests that memorials be made to Hospice or the Immanuel
   Baptist Church.

Arrangements are by Johnsons Funeral Home.
