Obituaries
                         JOSE `JOE' GOMEZ

I rest in you, O Lord.

Jose "Joe" Gomez, 71, went peacefully to be with his lord and savior, Jesus
Christ, from Shannon Medical Center. He suffered complications while being
treated for a short illness with cancer.

Born to Alejandra Lopez on March 31, 1927, Jose was raised by his grandparents,
Hillira and Ismael Gomez, in Brady. At the age of 15 years, Jose moved to San
Angelo. A man of humble beginnings, he was a migrant worker and worked hard at
becoming self-educated. Later, he became employed with the Texas Highway
Department, retiring after 32 years of service in March 1989.

In 1940, he met the love of his life, Enedina Castorena. Later, on Oct. 29,
1945, Jose and Enedina were married at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

"Papoo," as he was lovingly called by his family, leaves behind a family he so
loved and protected, including the love of his life, his wife and best friend
of 53 years, `Nena,' as he called her; two sons, Oscar C. Gomez and his wife,
Corina, from Dallas, and Richard C. Gomez and his wife, Tommie, from San
Angelo; a daughter, who was her Daddy's shadow, Gloria Gomez from San Angelo;
his pride and joy, his grandchildren, Greg Gomez, Paula Bermea, Richard Gomez
Jr., Yvette Rios, Janelle Gomez and Grable Gomez; the twinkle in his eyes, his
great-grandchildren, Gregory Austin Gomez, Alayna Rios and Jacob and Gabriella
Bermea.

Because Papoo was an only child, his brothers- and sisters-in-law were his
extended family, Clyde Castorena and his wife, Maria, and their children,
Bertha Garcia and her husband, Arnold, and their children, Isabel Castorena and
her late husband, Alfredo, and their children and the late Oralia and Evilio
Villarreal and their children.

Papoo was a member of St. Margaret's Catholic Church. A Christian man, he was
always ready to encourage a young person or just gladden their heart. He was a
kind, gentle and appreciative uncle to his nieces and nephews who loved him and
will always remember him.

A family rosary was held at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22. A prayer service will be at
7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, at Johnson's Funeral Home. His resurrection mass will
at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, at St. Margaret's Catholic Church. His final
resting place will be in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are by Johnson's
Funeral Home.

Carrying Papoo to his resting place will be grandsons Greg Gomez, Richard Gomez
Jr. and Grable Gomez. Also, Nat Bermea, Kenny Torres, Luis Rios and nephew
Alfred Gonzales.

Blessed is the person whose mind is clear,

Whose eyes can see, whose ears can hear.

Whose lips can praise in darkest gloom.

Whose hands can use their blessed skill.

Until the day your voice says "COME"

And I can start my journey "HOME"

Until that day, Dear Savior still

Help me accept your grace and will.

                         JOSE `JOE' GOMEZ

I rest in you, O Lord.
Jose ``Joe'' Gomez, 71, went peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus
Christ, from Shannon Medical Center. He suffered complications while being
treated for a short illness with cancer. Born to Alejandra Lopez on March 31,
1927, Jose was raised by his grandparents, Hillira and Ismael Gomez in Brady.
At the age of 15 years, Jose moved to San Angelo. A man of humble beginnings,
he was a migrant worker and worked hard at becoming self-educated. Later, he
became employed with the Texas Highway Department, retiring after 32 years of
service in March 1989. In 1940, he met the love of his life, Enedina Castorena.
Later, on Oct. 29, 1945, Jose and Enedina were married at St. Mary's Catholic
Church. ``Papoo,'' as he was lovingly called by his family, leaves behind a
family he so loved and protected, including the love of his life, his wife and
best friend of 53 years, `Nena,' as he called her; two sons, Oscar C. Gomez and
his wife, Corina, from Dallas and Richard C. Gomez and his wife, Tommie, from
San Angelo; a daughter, who was her Daddy's shadow, Gloria Gomez from San
Angelo; his pride and joy, his grandchildren, Greg Gomez, Paula Bermea, Richard
Gomez Jr., Yvette Rios, Janelle Gomez and Grable Gomez; and the twinkle in his
eyes, his great-grandchildren, Gregory Austin Gomez, Alayna Rios and Jacob and
Gabriella Bermea. Because Papoo was an only child, his brothers- and sisters-
in-law were his extended family, Clyde Castorena and his wife, Maria, and their
children, Bertha Garcia and her husband, Arnold, and their children, Isabel
Castorena and her late husband, Alfredo, and their children and the late Oralia
and Evilio Villarreal and their children. Papoo was a member of St. Margaret's
Catholic Church. A Christian man, he was always ready to encourage a young
person or just gladden their heart. He was a kind, gentle and appreciative
uncle to his nieces and nephews, who loved him and will always remember him. A
family rosary was held at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22. A prayer service was Tuesday,
Feb. 23, at Johnson's Funeral Home. His resurrection Mass will be at 10 a.m.
Wednesday, Feb. 24, at St. Margaret's Catholic Church. His final resting place
will be in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home.
Carrying Papoo to his resting place will be grandsons, Greg Gomez, Richard
Gomez Jr. and Grable Gomez; also, Nat Bermea, Kenny Torres, Luis Rios and
nephew, Alfred Gonzales.

Blessed is the person whose mind is clear,
Whose eyes can see, whose ears can hear.
Whose lips can praise in darkest gloom.
Whose hands can use their blessed skill.
Until the day your voice says ``COME''
And I can start my journey ``HOME''
Until that day, Dear Savior still
Help me accept your grace and will.

Safely Home
I am home in Heaven, dear ones;
Oh, so happy and bright!
There is perfect joy and beauty
In this everlasting light.
All the pain and grief is over,
Every restless tossing passed;
I am now at peace forever,
Safely home in Heaven at last.

Then you must not grieve so sorely,
For I love you dearly still:
Try to look beyond earth's shadows,
Pray to trust our Father's Will.

There is work still waiting for you,
So you must not idly stand;
Do it now, while life remaineth -
You shall rest in Jesus' land.

Do not stand at my grave and weep:
I am not there. I do not sleep,
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain;
I am the gentle autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there; I did not die.
