MENARD - Clayton Dan Elliott, 56, of Menard died Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, in a
Kimble County hospital. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. today in Rest Haven
Cemetery. Arrangements are by Heritage Funeral Home. He was born Jan. 31, 1942,
in Menard. He was a day laborer and a member of the Southside Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Christine Elliott of Menard; a daughter, Danna
Garcia of Menard; a son, Lance Elliott; a brother, T.L. Elliott of Brady; a
sister, Sally Wright of Brady; a stepdaughter, Brenda Guerrero of Menard; eight
grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

LLANO - Louise ``Ludy'' Etheridge, 75, of Llano died Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, in
an Austin hospital. Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. today in Llano City
Cemetery. Arrangements are by Waldrope-Hatfield-Hawthorne Funeral Home. She was
born July 21, 1923, in Llano County and was a lifetime resident of Llano. She
was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church. Survivors include
her husband, Horace Etheridge of Llano; a daughter, Barbara Harlow of Llano; a
son, Luke Etheridge of Llano; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and
a niece.

ELDORADO - Cipriana Anita Vasquez Tobias, 67, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, at
her residence. Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. today in Eldorado Cemetery.
Arrangements are by Kerbow Funeral Home. She was born Sept. 16, 1931, in San
Carlos, Coahuila, Mexico. She was a homemaker and a Catholic. Survivors include
her husband, Eduardo Tobias of Eldorado; a son, Manuel Tobias of Sonora; two
daughters, Maria Torres of San Angelo and Martha Mendrano of Eldorado; two
sisters, Carmella Hernandez of Del Rio and Irene Castorna of Fort Worth; and
seven grandchildren.

MENARD - Mayme Bible, 86, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, in a local care
facility. Graveside service will be at 4 p.m. today in Rest Haven Cemetery.
Arrangements are by Heritage Funeral Home. She was born July 3, 1912, in Brady.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include a
daughter, Margaret Word of Menard; a brother, Sonny Bailey of San Angelo; three
grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.

BALLINGER - Cruz Medrano Ramos, 67, died Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, at his
residence. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. today in Rains-Seale Funeral Home Chapel.
Service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church with burial in
Latin American Cemetery. She was born Sept. 14, 1931, in Ballinger. She was a
homemaker and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Survivors include a son,
George Villarreal; a daughter, Rose Mary Ramos; a brother, Vincent Medrano; a
sister, Sipriana Medrano; a grandson, Eddie Ramos Cruz; and numerous nieces and
nephews.

BIG SPRING - Ray Ashley, 82, of Stanton died on Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, in a
Stanton hospital. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Hillside
Memorial Gardens in Snyder. Arrangements are by Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral
Home. He was born Aug. 25, 1916, in Markham, Okla. He had worked for Mobil Oil
and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2013 and the Knights of
Pythias. He was a Baptist. Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Richards of
Pittsburg, Calif. and Phyllis Hildreath of Big Spring; a son, Ray R. Ashley of
Austin; a sister, Hazel Irwin of Ardmore, Okla.; nine grandchildren; and 11
great-grandchildren.

ABILENE - Larry Alan Smith, 56, of Eastland died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, in a
local hospital. Memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Elliott-Hamil
Chapel of Memories. He was born Feb. 19, 1942, in Reagan County. He was a self-
employed oil-field consultant and a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors
include his wife, Jackie Smith of Eastland; three sons, James Smith of Abilene,
and Mike Dean and Lee Dean Jr., both of Lockesburg, Ark.; three daughters, Lana
Childs of La Grange, Trina Tiner of Marshall and Michelle Salyer of Dublin; a

Obituaries
                        DON C. McKNIGHT

Don C. McKnight, 79, of San Angelo passed away Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, at his
home. Military cryptside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9, in
Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Mr.
McKnight was born Oct. 23, 1919, in Eastland County, Texas. He was in the
National Guard, the U.S. Army and Air Force for a total of 20 years. He
received numerous medals, including the American Defense Service Medal,
American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory medal, Army of Occupation Medal
with Japan clasp, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National
Defense Service Medal, Distinguished Unit Citation Emblem Eureux and Good
Conduct medals during World War II while in Japan and France. He received the
European, African and Middle Eastern Campaign medals with one Silver Service
Star and received the Bronze Star for meritorious achievements in direct
support of combat operations for the 1st Allied Airborne Army. Mr. McKnight
participated in the Ardennes Alsace Campaign, the Central Europe Campaign, the
Normandy Invasion, the Northern France Campaign, and the Rhineland Campaign. He
retired from the 310th Organizational Maintenance Squadron as an airplane and
engine mechanic. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Fredericksburg
Chapter and an honorary member of the San Angelo Emergency Corps. He was a
longtime resident of San Angelo and a member of the Harris Avenue Baptist
Church, where he was the greeter on Sunday mornings. Mr. McKnight was an expert
marksman and won numerous competitions. He was a great lover of birds and had
thousands of his feathered friends visit him for their treat twice a day. He
will be greatly missed by family and friends. A special thanks to Hospice of
San Angelo, nurse Jean, and his caregivers, Frankie and Sue. He is survived by
two stepsons, Raymond Taylor and his wife, Suzy, of San Angelo, and Eugene
Taylor of San Benito, Texas; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; six
great-great-grandchildren; and cousins, Virginia and Earl Stone of Granbury,
Gaston and Dorothy Alford of San Antonio, and Joe Burkett of Kerrville. Lunch
will be served for family and friends at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9, at the home of
Raymond and Suzy Taylor at 1802 A&M Ave. in San Angelo. Memorials may be made
to Hospice of San Angelo.

                        CARRIE PAULINE HAYNES VAUGHAN

ROBERT LEE - Carrie Pauline Haynes Vaughan died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, in the
Robert Lee Care Center. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, in
the Robert Lee Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 2:45 p.m. at the
First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim McWilliams and the Rev. John
Reynolds officiating. Arrangements are by Shaffer Funeral Home. Born Aug. 9,
1913, in Fluvanna, Texas, to Henry H. Haynes and Lousetta Haley Haynes, Pauline
married Robert Vaughan on Dec. 27, 1934. Mrs. Vaughan is survived by four
daughters, Eileen Watson and her husband, Norman, of Arlington, Mary Bessent
and her husband, Ben, of Robert Lee, Vernay Lomas of Longview and Paula Vaughan
of Abilene; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and also one sister,
Nadine Hodnett, and one brother, J.W. Haynes, both of Big Spring. Her husband,
Robert, and a great-grandson, Cody Bill Bessent, preceded her in death. Pauline
attended Mary Hardin Baylor and Texas Tech. She taught school in both Howard
and Victoria counties. During World War II, Pauline managed the Western Auto
store in Eastland, Texas, that she and Robert owned. After moving to Robert Lee
in 1952, Pauline devoted her time to raising her children and working in many
civic organizations. Pauline was a member of the First United Methodist Church
and served her church faithfully in many capacities. She was a charter member
of the Old Coke County Pageant Association and served as president of the
organization. Pauline was instrumental in organizing an auxiliary for the
Robert Lee Care Center and remained an active volunteer until her health
failed. Pauline was also a member of the 64 Study Club. Pauline and Robert
taught their children, by example, that a person's active walk with God should
be the top priority in one's life; that serving God includes a faithful
commitment to one's family, church and community. The Vaughans believed that it
is a duty and a privilege to leave the world a better place for their having
been here. And it is!

                        VIRGINIA ROBERTS DREILING

Virginia Roberts Dreiling, 76, of San Angelo died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, at
her residence. Service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, at Sacred Heart
Cathedral with Bishop Michael Pfeifer officiating. Burial will be at Calvary
Cemetery. She was born May 24, 1922, in Hamilton, Mo., to Andrew Lloyd and Vera
Roberts. She was married to Omer A. Dreiling on April 7, 1941, in Concordia,
Kan. Mrs. Virginia Dreiling was a devoted wife and mother. She was never too
busy to help anyone in need. Her volunteer work included St. John's Hospital
Auxiliary, the Sacred Heart Altar Society, and Sacred Heart School. Closest to
her heart was her work with the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. Mrs.
Dreiling was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial
Dames, and the Junior League. She was a Lady Night of the Papal Order of the
Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. She was also a member of
the Catholic Daughters of Isabelle, the Catholic Daughters of America, and the
Third Order of St. Francis. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Jo
Howard. She is survived by her husband, Omer A. Dreiling; two daughters, Martha
Jane Rolland and Margo Ebanks, both of Dallas; a son, Barney Dreiling of
Dallas; two sisters, Mary Van Campen of Colby, Kan., and Josephine Arnold of
Odessa; and 10 grandchildren, Sarah Howard, Caroline Howard, Ginny Rolland,
Matthew Rolland, Margo Rolland, Michael Rolland, Emily Dreiling, Adrienne
Dreiling, Ashley Ebanks and Jason Ebanks. Pallbearers will be Jay W. Wolslager,
William A. Shirley Sr., John Alvin Hay Sr., Damas Fernandez, Craig Porter, Jack
Reichert and M.F. McAfee. Mrs. Ann Noble will deliver the eulogy. Our sincere
appreciation to Sister Brigid Mollaghan, Dr. Vayden Stanley and the wonderful
staff of Family Hospice for their tremendous support. A special thank you to
the most Reverend George Fey C.P.P.S. for his many years of friendship and
dedication to Virginia. A further thank you to Irene DeLeon, Olga Rios and Lupe
Sosa for the loving care they gave Virginia through the many years of her
illness. Words cannot express the love and gratitude the Dreiling family
feelsfor the many blessings we have received from Mrs. Anita Fernandez, who has
not only been a very loyal and dear friend to Virginia, but also a treasured

Mildred ``Susan'' Renfro McSpadden, 86, of San Angelo died Sunday, Nov. 8,
1998, in a local nursing home. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday in
Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens with the Rev. John Loving of Emmanuel Episcopal
Church officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. She was born
Sept. 15, 1912, in Rochelle and had been a resident San Angelo since 1986. She
was the co-CEO of McSpadden Oil Exploration company and was a member of the
Episcopal Church. She is survived by a sister, Louise Rhodes of San Angelo.

SAN SABA - Mary Sue Hopper, 74, Billings, Mont., died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, in
Billings. Service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Howell-Doran Funeral Home
Chapel with burial in San Saba City Cemetery. She was born April 4, 1924, in
San Saba. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors
include two daughters, Linda Hood of Massachusetts and Angie Hopper of
Billings; a brother, Tom Gunter of Orangevale, Calif.; three sisters, Anne
Smithhart of Fair Oaks, Calif., Betty Rash of San Saba and Verneice Sargent of

BRADY - Jack W. Galaway Sr., 81, of Claude died Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, in Waco.

East Sweden Cemetery. Arrangements are by Heart of Texas Funeral Home. He was
born Nov. 7, 1916, in Brady and had lived in Claude for 14 years. An Army
veteran of World War II, he worked in the oil field as a pumper and had worked
for Travelers Oil Company in Borger for 30 years. Survivors include a son, Jack
Galaway Jr. of Waco; a brother, Edgar Galaway of Abilene; a granddaughter,
Charlotte Litton of Hewitt; and several nieces and nephews.

LLANO - Beryl Monk Wilhelm, 96, of Kingsland died Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, in a
Llano hospital. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. today in Oakwood Cemetery
in Waco. Arrangements are by Waldrope-Hatfield Funeral Home. She was born Jan.
12, 1902, in Diagonal, Iowa, and had been a resident of Kingsland since 1980,
coming from Waco. She was a homemaker and a dining hall supervisor at the
athletic dormitory at Baylor University and a member of the St. John's
Methodist Church in Waco. She is survived by a niece, Margaret Erkman of Omaha,
Neb.

                        Foy Yarbrough

SWEETWATER - Foy Clifford Yarbrough, 82, of Nolan died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998,
in an Abilene retirement center. Service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in McCoy
Chapel of Memories with burial in Loraine Cemetery. He was born May 21, 1916,
in Grand Saline and was a longtime resident of Nolan. He was a farmer and
rancher and a member of the Nolan Church of Christ. He was a past member of
Divide School Board at Nolan and was involved with Germanian Insurance Co. as
an agent. Survivors include his wife, Savannah Yarbrough of Nolan; three sons,
Harold Yarbrough of Nolan, David Yarbrough of Weatherford and Dwayne Yarbrough
of Buffalo Gap; three brothers, Sewell Yarbrough and Leland Yarbrough, both of
Tucson, Ariz., and Bill Yarbrough of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; four sisters, Ruby
Honea and Sylvia Bearden, both of Abilene, Faye Root of Elmira, N.Y., and Leta
Townsend of Lubbock; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

BIG SPRING - P.E. Moore, 80, of Big Spring died Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, in a
Lubbock hospital. Service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Nalley-Pickle & Welch
Rosewood Chapel with burial in Trinity Memorial Park. He was born Oct. 1, 1918,
in Eastland County and had been a resident of Big Spring since 1940. He was a
self-employed carpenter and had worked for Kasch Brothers, Brunswick Bowling
Alleys and Thompson Construction. He was a member of Cedar Ridge Church of
Christ and also belonged to the Carpenters and Joiners Union. Survivors include
two sons, Randy Moore of Big Spring and Daron Moore of Coahoma; two daughters,
Rois Schroeder of Taylor and Shari Stephens of Round Rock; a brother, Lee Moore
of Bastrop; four sisters, Bernice Ferguson of Burleson, LaVada Hale of

Welch Rosewood Chapel. He was born Dec. 31, 1955, in Chicago and had been a
resident of Big Spring for four years. A Navy veteran, he had worked for the
Veterans Administration Medical Center and was a member of the Grace Fellowship
Church and the American Legion. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Fields of Big
Spring; a daughter, Demetria Fields of Commerce; his mother, Magnolia Fields of

22, 1908, in San Saba County. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

BALLINGER - Esther Holland Jennings, 90, of Norton died at 2:41 a.m. Sunday,
Nov. 8, 1998, in Heritage Oaks Nursing Home. Visitation will be from 7 to 8
p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, at Rains-Seale Funeral Home. Service will be at 1 p.m.
Tuesday, Nov. 10, in Rains-Seale Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mills
Caraway officiating. Burial will be in Norton Cemetery in Norton. Esther was
born Aug. 1, 1908, in Norton. She married Treat Jennings June 3, 1934, in Santa
Anna. She was a homemaker and a member of Norton Baptist Church. She was
preceded in death by her husband, Treat Jennings; a son, Bill Jennings; a
daughter, Nell Pittman; and a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and John Rusk.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Dianna Jennings and Ed
and Chrystal Jennings, all of San Angelo; a son-in-law, Jerry Pittman of
Chandler; a daughter-in-law, Oleta Jennings of Hurst; a sister, Mary Del Brown
of Albuquerque, N.M.; 15 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

                        VIRGINIA ROBERTS DREILING

Virginia Roberts Dreiling, 76, of San Angelo died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, at
her residence. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, at
the Cathedral Church of the Sacred Heart with the Most Rev. Bishop Michael
Pfeifer as celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. She was born May 24,
1922, in Hamilton, Mo., to Andrew Lloyd and Vera Roberts. She was married to
Omer A. Dreiling on April 7, 1941, in Concordia, Kan. Mrs. Virginia Dreiling
was a devoted wife and mother. She was never too busy to help anyone in need.
Her volunteer work included St. John's Hospital Auxiliary, the Sacred Heart
Altar Society and Sacred Heart School. Closest to her heart was her work with
the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. Mrs. Dreiling was a member of the
Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames and the Junior League. She
was a Lady Knight of the Papal Order of the Equestrian Order of the Holy
Sepulchre of Jerusalem. She also was a member of the Catholic Daughters of
Isabelle, the Catholic Daughters of America and the Third Order of St. Francis.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Jo Howard. She is survived by
her husband, Omer A. Dreiling; two daughters, Martha Jane Rolland and her
husband, Christopher, and Margo Ebanks and her husband, Garlon, all of Dallas;
a son, Barney Dreiling of Dallas; a son-in-law, Fred Howard of Missouri City;
two sisters, Mary Van Campen of Colby, Kan., and Josephine Arnold of Odessa;
and ten grandchildren, Sarah Howard, Caroline Howard, Ginny Rolland, Matthew
Rolland, Margo Rolland, Michael Rolland, Emily Dreiling, Adrienne Dreiling,
Ashley Ebanks and Jason Ebanks. Pallbearers will be Jay W. Wolslager, William
A. Shirley Sr., John Alvin Hay Sr., Damas Fernandez, Craig Porter, Jack
Reichert and M.F. McAfee. Mrs. Ann Noble will deliver the eulogy. Our sincere
appreciation to Sister Brigid Mollaghan, Dr. Vayden Stanley and the wonderful
staff of Family Hospice for their tremendous support. A special thank you to
the Rev, George Fey, C.P.P.S. for his many years of friendship and dedication
to Virginia. A further thank you to Irene DeLeon, Olga Rios and Lupe Sosa for
the loving care they gave Virginia through the many years of her illness. Words
cannot express the love and gratitude the Dreiling family feels for the many
blessings we have received from Mrs. Anita Fernandez, who has not only been a
very loyal and dear friend to Virginia, but also a treasured part of our whole
family. There will be a family visitation from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9.

                        FRANK H. DEMERE JR.

Frank H. Demere Jr. was at home when he passed into his eternal life on
Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998. He was born Nov. 12, 1926, in San Angelo and his lived
his life on his ranch in Water Valley. He married Jean Shannon on Jan. 1, 1955.
They had three children and eight grandchildren, Janet and her husband, Tim
Young and their children, Shannon and Kevin; Wade and his wife, Monica, and
their children, Kalleigh, Brock and Seth; and Craig and his wife, Tammy, and
their children, Whitney, Laci and Cade. He was preceded in death by his
parents, Frank H. Demere Sr. and Mattie B. McManus Demere. Besides his wife and
children, he is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Mary Agnes and Larry
Norris and their family; and brother George W. Demere and his sons and their
families. Also by a special ``adopted'' son, Billy Knox. Frank cherished ranch
life and was one of God's special shepherd who lovingly cared for his family,
land and livestock. He was a Christian and a lifelong member of the Water
Valley United Methodist Church. Frank's service will be in the place he
worshiped every day of his life, outside in God's own cathedral. His graveside
service will be at 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, in Water Valley Cemetery. In case of
bad weather, the service will be moved to the Water Valley United Methodist
Church. The Rev. Charles Williams and the Rev. Jim McWilliams, pastor of Water
Valley United Methodist Church, will officiate. Arrangements are by Johnson's
Funeral Home. Memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of San Angelo, Local
Community Mission Outreach in care of the Water Valley United Methodist Church
or a favorite charity. Frank's body will be at the Water Valley United
Methodist Church until the service.

                        R.F. `FORD' STANSELL

R.F. ``Ford'' Stansell, 85, of San Angelo died at 7:55 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7,
1998, at his daughter's residence. Service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10,
in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with Lewis Cowan and Howard Jones officiating.
Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Family visitation will be
from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, at Johnson's Funeral Home. Ford was born April
17, 1913, in Killeen and was a longtime resident of San Angelo. He retired,
after 32 years, as a conductor for Santa Fe Railroad in Slaton. Ford was a
member of the First Baptist Church, the Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, East
Angelo Lions Club and the United Transportation Union. Ford was married to
Edith McGhee on June 22, 1935, in San Angelo. Ford was preceded in death by two
sisters, Doris Tiller and Dorothy Cowan. Survivors include his wife, Edith
Stansell of San Angelo; two daughters, Patricia Stansell of Lubbock and Pam
Dane Hawkins and husband, Delbert, of San Angelo; five grandchildren, John and
Karena Dane, Cory and Russell Hawkins, Melissa Zilbert and husband, Bruce; one
great-grandson, Chase Zilbert; one brother, Joe W. Stansell and wife, Rueline,
of Hickory Creek; two sisters, Aldine Hulsey of Denton and Dawn Vetter of
Pinole, Calif.; a brother-in-law, Ret. Col. M.W. Tiller of San Antonio;
sisters-in-law, Jewell Dickens of Kingsland and Marie McGhee of Thonotosassa,
Fla.; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Gay Johnson of
Lubbock. Pallbearers will be Kevin Dickens, David Dickens, Mac Dickens, Scott
Stansell, Wade Stansell, Waune Tiller, Robert David Cowan and David Cowan.

ELDORADO - Helen Marie Brown Page of Eldorado died at 10:20 p.m. Saturday, Nov.
7, 1998, in her home surrounded by her family. She was born Dec. 4, 1927, in
San Angelo, to Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Brown. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m.
Tuesday, Nov. 10, in Eldorado Cemetery followed by a memorial service at 11
a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Hawley Wolfe, pastor, and the
Rev. Ron Sutto of First Presbyterian Church of San Angelo will conduct the
services. Arrangements are by Kerbow Funeral Home. Helen graduated from San
Angelo High School with leading roles in high school musicals because of her
extraordinary talents. In 1945 she entered Texas Christian University, where
true fun began. Helen found herself band sweetheart in 1946, followed by such
honors as Class Favorite her junior and senior years. She pursued a music major
and upon completion of college, moved to Ozona as a teacher. She married Wilson
Page of Eldorado on Oct. 8, 1949, and began her new life as a rancher's wife in
Schleicher County. Helen Marie was a ruling elder in the First Presbyterian
Church, serving her church faithfully as a Sunday school teacher, choir and
handbell member and Circle leader for the Presbyterian women. She brightened
many lives by volunteering in the Meals on Wheels program. In recent years,
Helen Marie became actively involved with the Way-Off Broadway Players as a
sustaining member. She was blessed with a beautiful soprano voice and a
caring,loving spirit which she shared with the community as she touched many
lives. She was a wonderful wife, mother, aunt, sister, sister-in-law and
grandmothers. She was known as ``Mammy'' to many young people. Helen is
survived by her children, Robert Wilson Page of Orient and Debra Ellen and
husband, Kerry Joy, of Eldorado; four granddaughters, Courtney Virginia and Kay
Suzanna Page of Lake Jackson and Carmen Page and Madolyn Marie Joy of Eldorado;
and one sister, Wilma J. Davis of Carlsbad, N.M. Other survivors include two
sisters-in-law, Maxine Page of San Angelo and Lucy Page of Eldorado; many
nieces and nephews as well as many friends. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Wilson; and her parents. Honorary pallbearers will be Red Shaw, Mort
Mertz, Fred Campbell, Raymon Mobley, John Stitt, Craig Porter, Jim Carter,
James L. Powell, Howard Derrick, Mickey Rathbone, Jo Ed Hill, Richard Sterling,

an Army veteran of World War II and a heavy equipment operator. Survivors

in Coleman Cemetery. He was born Feb. 28, 1916, in Eastland County and had
lived in Eastland and Coleman counties, and in Odessa for 40 years where he was
employed as an auto mechanic, returning to Coleman in 1985. An Air Force
veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the
American Legion and the Elm Street Church of Christ. Survivors include his
wife, Winnie Jones of Coleman; a daughter, Shirley Ann Tucker of Odessa; two
brothers, Lavell Jones of Santa Anna and Donald Jones of Coleman; two
grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

MARFA - Michael ``Mike'' Guevara, 28, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, at his

born June 1, 1929, in Comanche. A World War II veteran, he was a geologist, a

Jan. 16, 1911, in Coleman County. A Merchant Marine veteran of World War II, he

SHERWOOD, Ark. - David O. Haynes, 68, died Nov. 6, 1998. Memorial service was

He was a sales manager and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors
include his wife, Ramona Haynes of Sherwood; five daughters, Dana Ritcheson of

was born Feb. 23, 1936, in Stanton. He was a brickmason and a member of the St.

COLEMAN - Thomas F. Pierson, 67, of Proctor died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, in a

Home. He was born Dec. 22, 1930, in Junction and had lived in Proctor for 14
years. A Marine veteran of the Korean War, he taught school and coached in
numerous towns in West Texas. He was a member of Disabled America Veterans and
Exclusive Fraternity of Honor of the Chosen Few (of the Korean Veterans). He
was a Baptist. Survivors include his wife, Audrey Arlene Pierson of Proctor;

SWEETWATER - Preston Hoy Ward, 77, of Abilene died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, in

Welch Rosewood Chapel in Big Spring with burial in Mount Olive Memorial Park.
He was born Feb. 9, 1921, in Stonewall County and was a longtime resident of
Big Spring before moving to Abilene in 1992. He retired from the Air Force
after 22 years and was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include his
wife, Ida Mae Ward of Abilene; two daughters, Delores Carpenter of Big Spring
and Jayne Jones of Eastland; a son, Billy B. Cooke of Casper, Wyo.; six
brothers, Lon Ward of Levelland, J.P. Ward of Camarillo, Calif., James Ward of
Kamay, Dud Ward of Aspermont, Bob Ward of Abilene and Clifton Ward of

                        SUSAN McSPADDEN

Susan Renfro McSpadden, 86, of San Angelo died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, in a local
nursing home. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, in Lawnhaven
Memorial Gardens with Father John Loving officiating. Johnson's Funeral Home is
in charge of arrangements. Susan was born Sept. 15, 1912, in Rochelle, Texas.
She spent her early years in Menard, where she attended school, later
graduating from San Angelo High School and San Angelo Junior College. She was
employed during World War II with the WPA, Goodfellow Field and Concho Field as
a secretary in the supply depot. In January 1945, Susan moved to New York,
becoming secretary to the head of the New York Athletic Club. Susan returned to
Texas in 1951, where she met and married Claude McSpadden, an independent oil
explorer in Tucumcari, N.M. Later, she become the co-chief executive officer of
Susan Oil Exploration. She had been a resident of San Angelo since 1986 and was
a member of the Episcopal Church. She is survived by one sister, Louise Rhodes
of San Angelo; nephews, Richard and Christopher Tuck and James and John Renfro;
a stepson, Joe R. McSpadden; and a stepdaughter, Claudia Olson. She was
preceded in death by her husband, mother, father, sisters, Katherine R. Sheen
and Marie Jennings, and brother, Willard C. Renfro. The family wishes to thank
the staffs of Meadow Creek Nursing Center and Park Plaza Nursing Center for all
the kindness and care shown to Susan McSpadden, Katherine R. Sheen and Willard
C. Renfro.

                        STACY WAYNE MOHLER

Stacy Wayne Mohler passed away at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at his home
surrounded by his family. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11,
at Johnson's Funeral Home. Burial will be in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens
immediately following. Stacy was born Aug. 5, 1950, in San Angelo and graduated
from Miles High School in 1968. While attending Angelo State University, he
served as president of the Concho Aggie Club in 1970. Mr. Mohler was very
active in the livestock industry, serving on the Governor's Committee on
Agriculture in 1975 and the San Angelo Livestock Stock Show and Rodeo
(1978-1982). Stacy also was a past member of the Ranch Animal Science
Association, Angelo State Ex-Student Association, Adult 4-H Leader and was a
current member of the Paint Horse Association. Mr. Mohler was a livestock
consultant and broker for sheep and cattle all over Texas, presently running
ranches in Del Rio and San Angelo. He married Gina Rose of Del Rio on Dec. 26,
1981. Stacy will be missed by all who had the good fortune to cross his path.
His zest for life was unsurpassed, and he was always there to lend advice or a
helping hand. He was a wonderful husband, father, friend, brother and son.
``Happy Trails to You ... Until we meet again.''

Survivors include his wife, Gina, and two sons, Ryan and Kelly of San Angelo;
his parents, Buster and Marilyn Mohler of San Angelo; two sisters, Karen Petty
and her husband, Phil, of Abilene and Tesa Whitley and her husband, Johnny, of
Midland; one brother, Jay Mohler and his wife, Mary, of San Angelo; a niece,
Kalyn Petty; nephews, Shae and Stacy Jones, Zane Petty and Adam Mohler; and a
very special and loving cousin, Wesley White and his wife, Janet, of San
Angelo. Honorary pallbearers will be Paul Lippe, Terry Ford, Bill Collins,
Herman Everette, Jerry Hudson, Bob Lacy, Wesley White, Buster Allen, Art
Aguirre, Ken Smith, Drake McKinney, Bobby Edmond, Steve Beach and Bill
Linderman. The family requests memorial gifts be made to the Cancer Research
Foundation, West Texas Boys Ranch or Family Hospice.

                        HELEN `DICKIE' HENZE

SAN ANTONIO - Helen ``Dickie'' Henze, born April 25, 1924, in Savanna, Ill.,
entered into rest on Nov. 9, 1998, in San Angelo at the age of 74 years. Mrs.
Henze had been a resident of San Antonio for 50 years and a resident of San
Angelo for the past 11 years. Survivors include her husband, Rudolph V.
Henze;daughters and sons-in-law, Sheila and Dick Herndon, Carolyn and Jim Burt,
and Celeste and Ron Grimm; brother, Max Ludwick; seven grandchildren; 12 great-
grandchildren; and numerous other relatives in the Seguin area. Visitation will
begin at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, at Mission Park South Funeral Chapels.

SPOKANE, Wash. - Elmer ``Breck'' Breckenridge Jr., 42, died Oct. 31, 1998, in
Spokane. Service was Nov. 7 at the Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home, and private
inurnment followed. He was born Dec. 23, 1955, in Lubbock and had lived in
Spokane for 18 years. He retired as a technical sergeant from the U.S. Air
Force, where he had been a survival instructor. Survivors include his wife,

Breckenridge, both of Otis Orchards, Wash., and Cresentia Breckenridge of Fort

                        JERRY LEWIS WIKE

Jerry Lewis Wike of Grape Creek passed from this life at 5:45 a.m. Tuesday,
Nov. 10, 1998, in his home while surrounded by his loving family. He was born
Oct. 10, 1946, in San Angelo to Mr. and Mrs. Troy Scott Wike. Graveside service
will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, in Fairmount Cemetery. The Rev. Monte Wike,
pastor of First United Methodist Church of Matador, Texas, will officiate.
Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Jerry served his country in the
U.S. National Guard from 1964 to 1965 and in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1965 to
1968. During his tour of duty in Vietnam, he was attached to the 7th Bulk Fuel
Co., 3rd Airwing stationed out of Da Nang. Jerry worked here in San Angelo for
Ethicon for 20 years and most recently with Arrow Trucking. Jerry was preceded
in death by his father, Troy Scott Wike. Survivors include his three children,
Jerry ``Scott'' Wike of Orlando, Fla., and Barry Neal Wike and Robin Elaine
Wike, both of San Angelo; his mother, Helen Authel Wike of San Angelo; brother,
Jeffrey Scott Wike and wife, Anita, of Bedford; sister, Janis Jean Loera and
husband, Tony; brother, Rex Douglas Wike and wife, Ursula; and sister, Joanne
Elizabeth Wike, and sister, June Elaine Jetton and husband, Billy, all of San
Angelo. He also is survived by three grandchildren; seven nieces and nephews;
and eight great-nieces and great-nephews. Jerry lived life as it happened and
mostly enjoyed the quietness and solitude of the early-morning hours and
listening to life awaken to the sunrise of a new day. Jerry's passions included
fine-tuning and working on his computer, ``old cars,'' water sports, hunting
and breaking the bank in Las Vegas. The family extends a special ``thank you''
to Dr. Robert Danbert and Billie McMahon of West Texas Medical Associates and
Family Hospice for the support, love and care they provided. Jerry will be
sorely missed by his family and friends. We commend your spirit to the Lord and
thank Him that you are now at peace.

born Aug. 15, 1907, in Sonora. A veteran of World War II, he was a retired oil

had lived in Kerrville since 1970. She was a bookkeeper and a member of the

She was born March 1, 1923, in Silver Valley and was a lifetime resident of

Robert Meggs, 55, of San Angelo died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998, at his

He was a U.S. Navy veteran. Robert was a loving husband to his wife, Judy. He
enjoyed helping people and spending time in the great outdoors. He was an avid
fisherman. Robert was married to Judy Farmer June 24, 1998, in San Angelo.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Farmer Meggs of San Angelo; his son
anddaughter-in-law, Herbert Daniel and Rhonda Brin of Dallas; his mother and
stepfather, Genevieve and Novel May of Cedar Creek; his grandsons, Matthew and

cafeteria worker, a homemaker and a Lutheran. Survivors include two daughters,
Barbara Elliott of Georgetown and Shirley Ulrich of Fayetteville, Ark.; two
sons, Gerald Oestreich of Brady and Kenneth Oestreich of Corpus Christi; two
sisters, Ima Jean Halliburton and Pat Tribble, both of Llano; a brother, Irvin
Ahrlett of Llano; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four
stepgrandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

PECOS - Facundo Alarcon, 52, of Barstow died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, in a
Lubbock hospital. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Sunday in Pecos Funeral Home Chapel.
Service will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church with
burial in Barstow Cemetery. He was born Nov. 27, 1945, in Barco Azul, Mexico,
and had been a resident of Barstow since 1978. He was a Catholic. Survivors
include his wife, Manuela Alarcon and a son, Edgar Alarcon, both of Barstow;
his father, Pedro Alarcon, a brother, Antonio Alarcon, and a sister, Matilde
Caballero, all of Kermit.

KERMIT - Clyde H. Bollinger, 83, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, in Kermit.
Service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Cooper Funeral Chapel with burial in
Kermit Cemetery. He was born June 20, 1915, in Direct and had been a resident
of Kermit for more than 40 years. An Army veteran of World War II, he retired
from Sharp Drilling Co. in 1985 and was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include a stepson, Larry Roberts of Odessa; two nieces; two
grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

CRANE - Clotee ``Martha'' Chipman, 89, of Crane died Friday, Nov. 13, 1998, in
an Odessa hospital. Service will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Richard W. Box Funeral
Home Chapel with burial in Crane County Cemetery. She was born Nov. 8, 1909, in
Parker County and had been a resident of Crane for 60 years. She was a cook and
a member of the Church of Christ in McCamey. Survivors include a son, Curtiss
Chipman of Odessa; four sisters, Vivian Mock and Thelma Smallwood, both of
Weatherford, Eva Thomas of Dallas and Marilyn Linam of Orange; several
grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

KERMIT - Sue Tarver, 80, of Crane died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, in a Crane care
center. Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Highland United Methodist
Church in Odessa. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. in Kermit Cemetery.
Arrangements are by Cooper Funeral Chapel. She was born Jan. 6, 1918, in Amity,
Ark., and was a longtime resident of Winkler County before moving to Crane one
year ago. She was a retired secretary for the Kermit Independent School
District and was a member of the United Methodist Church. Survivors include a
daughter, Patty L. Tarver of Odessa; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-
grandchildren.

KERRVILLE - Mary Gay Lesak, 69, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, in a local

Antonio and had been a resident of Kerrville for 22 years. Survivors include

BIG SPRING - Russell Earl Hoover, 77, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, in a local

County, Ill., and had been a longtime resident of Big Spring. An Army Air Corps
veteran of World War II, he retired after 32 years of service as a recreational

                        VELDA ROSE HARGRAVE

Velda Rose Parks Hargrave, 28, met her Creator on Nov. 10, 1998. She left
behind three blessings, Joshua, Erika and Lyndsay. What does a family say to
such young questioning faces? ``Mommy has gone to be an angel'' was the answer
spoken. But as the days, weeks and years pass, her children must borrow others
memories of their mommy. As an individual, Velda was a vibrant, vivacious
woman. She was bold, strong-willed and spirited. Her spunky personality and
bubbly giggle were refreshing. Velda was a conscientious nursing assistant. She
was so compassionate for the elderly and wholehearted with the mentally
handicapped. Mrs. Hargrave was a loyal wife. She respected and adored her
husband. She honored her spouse and praised him lovingly. Velda's greatest gift
to herself and all of us are Josh, Erika and Lyndsay. She was so proud to be a
mother. Devoted to giving her children the best life possible, she gave of
herself without a doubt.

Robert Meggs, 55, of San Angelo died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998, at his
residence. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, in Lawnhaven

28, 1942, in Dallas and was a resident of San Angelo for 10 years. He was a
retired independent telephone line installer for Southwestern Bell Telephone.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran. Robert was a loving husband to his wife, Judy. He
enjoyed helping people and spending time in the great outdoors. He was an avid
fisherman. Robert was married to Judy Farmer on June 24, 1988, in San Angelo.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Farmer Meggs of San Angelo; his son and
daughter-in-law, Herbert Daniel and Rhonda Brin of Dallas; his mother and
stepfather, Genevieve and Novel May of Cedar Creek; his grandsons, Matthew and

Obituaries
                        CHARLES BURGESS

Charles Burgess was born in Austin, Texas, on Aug. 27, 1917, to C.P. and
Emmagene Burgess. He died Nov. 8, 1998, in his home in San Angelo at age of 81.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16, in Val Verde Cemetery near
the town of Bartlett. Arrangements are by Robert Massie Funeral Home. Charles
graduated from Milby High School in Houston and attended Rice University. He
served in the Army Air Corp as a second lieutenant during World War II and was
awarded the American Theater Ribbon, the World War II Victory Medal, the
Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal with a Bronze Star. He worked as a claim adjuster
for various insurance companies and retired after 20 years of service with the
Texas State Board of Insurance. He was an avid University of Texas football
fan, enjoyed boating and traveling. He moved to San Angelo in May of 1993,
where he enjoyed his later years. Mr. Burgess was preceded in death by three
wives, Pauline Burgess, Edie Cutler Burgess and Elizabeth Moore Burgess.
Survivors include his son, Gerald Burgess of Austin; a daughter, Carol Burgess
Zamzow and husband, Martin, of Boothbay Harbor, Maine; grandsons, Geoffrey Trae
Valdez and his wife, Sonja, Aaron Lee Valdez and wife, Kelly, all of Austin;
and great-grandsons, Jakeb Lee Valdez and Kelton Trae Valdez. Others include
numerous nephews and nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces, as well
asstepchildren and stepgrandchildren. His zest for life will always be a joyful
remembrance of our ``Daddy and Grandpa.''

                        BILL JOHNSON

Bill Johnson, 68, of San Angelo died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998. Graveside service
will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 16, in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens officiated by
the Rev. David Strange, pastor of Concho Valley Baptist Church. Arrangements
are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Bill was born Oct. 11, 1930, in Mercury, Texas,
to Ed and Vivian Johnson. He married La Verne Fields Sept. 19, 1955, in San
Angelo. Bill had retired from the Southwestern Welding Supply Co. after 40
years, and had recently worked for J&T Welding. Bill had been a member of the
Concho Riders Club, and was a member and had held offices in the American
Sheriff's Posse Association. He loved doing things outdoors, especially
horsemanship and hunting. Survivors include his wife, La Verne Johnson of San
Angelo; his son and daughter-in-law, Kenny and Dorothy Johnson of San Angelo;
his daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Bob Perry of Dallas; one granddaughter,
Stephanie Perry of Dallas; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Bill will
be greatly missed by his loving family and his many dear and special friends.
