One Last Trail
Well his days are getting shorter,
And his saddles getting cold
His trails just about over
And his pony's getting old
But he's still got his memories
And that helps him to hang on
To a way of life that used to be
But now is dead and gone.
As he rolls his ole pony
To the end of the hall
He stares out the window
As the tears begin to fall
He dreams of a yesteryear
And how he longs to rope a steer
And tie on hard and fast
He once was a Hero
The best cowboy in the land
He once soared like an eagle
But now can hardly stand
As he rolls himself back to his bunk
He grabs his boots and spurs
And removes his hat one last time
To say a prayer to help the hurt
And like the way of life that used to be
But now is dead and gone
His prayers have now been answered
And he is finally moving on
And as he heads down this last one trail
A smile comes to his face
As he rides off into the sunset
To his final resting place.- By grandson,
Justin Todd Paxton

			ELTON T. MIMS
Elton T. Mims, member of a pioneering West Texas ranching family, died
peacefully at his home in San Angelo on Thursday, March 5, 1998. The son of
J.R. and Ara McManus Mims, he was born May 29, 1908, in Sherwood close to the
family homestead on Rocky Creek in Tom Green County. During their early school
years, Mr. Mims and his two elder sisters, Robbie and Lonnie, were taught by a
governess on the ranch. They attended high school in San Angelo, boarding with
their grandmother, Molly Richmond Mims. After graduation from San Angelo High
School, he began college at John Tarleton College in Stephenville. Two years
later, Mr. Mims transferred to the newly created Texas Technological College
in Lubbock, where he graduated in 1928 with a degree in agriculture. The Class
of 1929 was the first four-year class in Tech's history. In college he was a
member of the school's stock-judging teams and participated in national
competitions. The onset of the Depression made his immediate return to
ranching essential, as he was needed to work the two family ranches: Rocky
Creek Ranch in Tom Green County and the Knapp Ranch in Coke County, home of
his father and stepmother, Agnes Demere Mims. In the mid-1930s he renewed his
acquaintance with Marie E. Gerber at old time dances in San Angelo. They met
in the late 1920s when she was hired to teach at the one-room Walnut School in
Coke County where Mr. Mims' youngest sister, Helen, was a student. Marie and
Elton Mims were married at sunrise on Easter Sunday, April 21, 1935, in the
First Presbyterian Church. For the next 40 years, they made their home on the
family's Knapp Ranch near Water Valley. At first, Elton Mims was his father's
general ranch manager. In 1941, J.R. Mims sold most of his livestock to his
children and their spouses. From that time until his own retirement, Elton
Mims operated the Knapp in partnership with his brother-in-law, Paul Coulter.
He maintained connections with the Texas Tech College of Agriculture, keeping
up to date on range and ranch management. In 1983, the Coke County Soil and
Water Conservation District named him ``Conservationist of the Year.'' He was
a faithful member of the Methodist church, both in Water Valley and in San
Angelo, often serving as a delegate to state, national and world conferences.
He also helped preserve the history of West Texas through his active work in
county and regional historical associations. During the 1950s, he was an
elected board member of the Water Valley Independent School District. After
moving from the ranch to San Angelo in the 1970s, he became an active member
of the San Angelo Lions Club and continued his interest in Fort Concho and
other historical projects. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years,
Marie Gerber Mims; a daughter, R. Sue Mims of Douglas, Mich., and San Angelo;
a son and daughter-in-law, Robert E. and Joyce H. Mims of Upper Montclair,
N.J.; two grandsons, Michael R. Mims of Venice, Calif., and John W. Mims of
Williamsburg, Mich.; and two sisters, Lonnie Mims Coulter of San Angelo and
Helen Mims Sprague of Cleveland. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday,
