Family visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, at Johnson's Funeral Home. David was born in Coleman County on Jan. 19, 1928, to Douglas and Hettie Hensley. Along with his two sisters, Dahlia and Wanda, and two brothers, Curtis and Sam, he spent his childhood years on a farm near Eola. As soon as he turned 18, he joined the Army (1946). After a couple of years in the Army, he came back to Texas and about this time he met and married the love of his life, Helen. They were married on the front porch of his parents' house on April 9, 1950. Soon thereafter, he began his career with the Department of Public Safety. While in the DPS, he had a couple of short duty assignments in El Paso and Houston, but spent the majority of his career of 33 years in San Angelo. After his retirement from the DPS in 1983, David started a defensive driving school in San Angelo. He really loved his business because it allowed him to do what he enjoyed most - meeting and visiting with people. He was really proud of being able to start and operate a successful business. After turning over the operation of his business to his son, Gary, David made the coffee shop circuit and enjoyed meeting with the ``Breakfast Club'' every day. If you could only use one word to describe David Hensley that word would be ``best.'' If you had the privilege to know David, then you know what I mean. He was the ``best'' husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle that you could ever possibly imagine. As many of you can attest, he was the ``best'' friend that you could ever hope to have. And last but certainly not least, David had the ``best'' laugh, smile and personality of anyone that you will ever meet. He had a special way to make everybody who he had contact with feel important and special. In short, he truly was a delight to know. His legacy will be the lasting impact and influence that he had on the lives of literally hundreds of people. David served as a deacon at the Johnson Street Church of Christ for many years. David was a very devoted Christian man who loved the Lord with all of his heart. Our consolation and comfort in our loss is that he has been ``born'' into that heavenly realm that our Lord Jesus Christ has prepared for him. Peace be with you Dad. We love you very much and look forward to that day that we may be reunited with you in heaven. Praise the Lord! David is survived by his beloved wife, Helen; three adoring children, Peggy Shaw (husband, Don), Gary Hensley and Randy Hensley (wife, Cindy); his two sisters, Dahlia (husband, John) Kling and Wanda (husband, Curtis) Logsdon; four loving grandchildren, Lauren and Denton Shaw and Chase and Kristen Hensley; and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Travis Lane, C.D. Henry, Pat Patterson, Sam Long, Oscar Cook and Eudell Barker. A special thanks to the Columbia ICU staff and a very special friend, Lilli Johnson. Hensley went home to the Lord on Saturday, Feb. 21, 1998, after a brief illness. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 23, at Johnson Street Church of Christ. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home.
